Product Overview

Model: NVR-216MH-C/16P-2

Who This Is For

When cabling simplicity across a mid-size site is the priority, the HiLook NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro delivers a centralised 16-channel PoE recording platform that powers and connects cameras through a single Cat cable per device. Designed for commercial installations where 9 to 16 cameras are required - warehouses, medical centres, aged care facilities, school buildings, and multi-tenancy retail - this NVR removes the need for a separate PoE switch and consolidates power budgeting, network management, and storage into one unit. With dual HDD bays accommodating high-capacity drives, AI analytics built into the platform, and 4K decoding support, it suits integrators and facility managers who are specifying a complete IP camera system and want a single recorder that handles expansion without requiring a hardware upgrade mid-project.

What This NVR Actually Does

16 Built-In PoE Ports

All 16 camera channels carry power and data over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable. No external PoE switch is needed, which reduces rack space, simplifies cabling runs, and removes one potential failure point from the system.

4K Decoding and Playback

The NVR decodes and displays 4K (8MP) resolution streams, meaning footage from compatible HiLook or Hikvision cameras is played back at full resolution on a 4K monitor - useful when reviewing incidents where fine detail, licence plates, or facial identification matters.

Dual HDD Bays

Two internal drive bays allow high-capacity storage without external units. Installers can fit two surveillance-grade HDDs to extend retention periods across all 16 channels, or configure for redundancy depending on site requirements.

AI Analytics

Built-in AI analytics support line crossing and intrusion detection on compatible cameras, filtering motion events down to human and vehicle classifications. This reduces false alarm frequency compared to standard pixel-based motion detection.

H.265+ Compression

H.265+ encoding cuts storage consumption significantly compared to H.264. Across 16 active channels running continuously, this extends the number of days of footage that can be retained on a given drive size - a direct cost saving on storage hardware.

Remote Access and Management

Live view, playback, and event notifications are accessible via the Hik-Connect app and iVMS-4200 software. Facility managers can review footage or check camera status remotely without being on site, from a phone, tablet, or desktop.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Integrators: Specifying a complete 16-camera IP system for a commercial site and needing a single PoE NVR that handles power delivery, recording, and AI event management without additional switching hardware.
  • School and Education Facility Managers: Deploying cameras across multiple buildings where centralised recording, remote access via iVMS-4200, and AI-filtered alerts reduce the workload on administration staff monitoring the system.
  • Warehouse and Industrial Site Operators: Running 4K cameras across loading docks and internal zones where dual HDD capacity and H.265+ compression are needed to maintain extended retention periods under continuous recording.
  • Aged Care and Medical Centre Administrators: Installing discreet camera systems across care environments where a clean, single-unit recorder with structured PoE cabling keeps plant room equipment tidy and auditable.
  • Retail Chain Property Teams: Standardising on a 16-channel platform across multiple store locations so that technicians can service any site using the same recorder hardware and configuration approach.

Honest Assessment

The HiLook NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro handles the practical demands of a 16-camera PoE system well. The integrated PoE switch genuinely simplifies installation - one less piece of active hardware, one fewer power supply, and a cleaner cabling layout. Dual HDD bays combined with H.265+ compression make extended retention feasible without outsizing the storage budget, and AI analytics on compatible cameras provide meaningful event filtering rather than constant motion alerts. Available through Security Australia, this unit sits in the mid-market NVR tier and represents good value for structured commercial deployments. Where it reaches its limits: it will not suit sites requiring more than 16 cameras without adding a second recorder, it does not support RAID configurations for true drive redundancy, and sites needing advanced features such as facial recognition or deep-learning ANPR should look at a higher-tier Hikvision recorder instead.

Before You Buy

Storage Planning: With 16 channels recording at 4K or even 1080p continuously, storage consumption adds up quickly. Calculate your required retention period before ordering HDDs - H.265+ helps, but 16 active channels at high resolution can consume 4TB or more per week depending on scene activity. Fit the largest surveillance-grade drives your budget allows on day one rather than returning to add storage later.

PoE Power Budget: The total PoE power budget across all 16 ports is shared. High-power cameras such as PTZ units or TiOC models draw significantly more than standard fixed cameras. Check the per-port and total PoE budget against your camera selection before commissioning - a mix of demanding cameras across all 16 ports may exceed the available power allocation.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are deploying between 9 and 16 IP cameras at a commercial site and want to eliminate a separate PoE switch - the 16 built-in PoE ports handle power and data for every camera from a single unit.
  • Good match if: Your site runs compatible HiLook or Hikvision cameras and you want AI event filtering - line crossing and intrusion detection are processed at the NVR level without requiring additional hardware or cloud subscriptions.
  • You may need a different model if: Your camera count is likely to exceed 16, or you need enterprise-grade features such as RAID storage, advanced facial recognition analytics, or deep-learning ANPR - a higher-channel Hikvision NVR from the DS-7600 or DS-9600 series would be more appropriate for those requirements.

Real-World Scenarios

Warehouse with 16 Camera Positions

An integrator runs Cat6 from a central plant room to 16 camera positions across loading docks and internal aisles. The NVR powers all cameras directly, eliminating the need for a separate PoE switch. Dual HDDs handle the continuous recording load across all channels.

School Campus After-Hours Monitoring

AI intrusion detection is configured on perimeter camera zones. After hours, only human-classified events trigger notifications to a caretaker's phone via Hik-Connect - eliminating false alerts from trees, animals, and headlights that standard motion detection would generate.

Aged Care Facility Upgrade

An existing analogue system is replaced with 16 IP cameras connected to this NVR. 4K resolution on corridor and entry cameras allows staff and management to review footage with sufficient detail, and H.265+ compression extends retention without requiring oversized drives.

Multi-Site Retail Standardisation

A retail group standardises on this NVR model across 8 store locations. Each site runs the same hardware and iVMS-4200 configuration, so a single technician can service any location using the same process - reducing callout complexity and training time.

Medical Centre with Remote Management

A practice manager accesses live camera views and reviews parking lot footage from a tablet using Hik-Connect, without needing to be on site. AI line crossing on the entrance zone sends an alert if movement is detected outside consultation hours.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a self-contained 16-channel PoE recorder with AI analytics and 4K support for a commercial site, and want to avoid the cost and complexity of a separate managed PoE switch.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 16 channels, enterprise RAID storage redundancy, or advanced deep-learning analytics such as facial recognition or ANPR - a higher-tier Hikvision NVR series would be more appropriate for those requirements.
  • Pairs well with: HiLook or Hikvision PoE IP turret, dome, or bullet cameras rated up to 8MP - particularly models with AcuSense or built-in AI detection to get the most from the NVR's analytics capabilities.

Common Questions

  1. Does this NVR work with non-HiLook cameras?

Yes. The NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro is compatible with Hikvision IP cameras and ONVIF-compliant cameras from other manufacturers. However, AI analytics features such as human and vehicle classification are fully supported only when using compatible HiLook or Hikvision cameras with the relevant onboard processing. Third-party ONVIF cameras will record and display correctly but may not pass AI event data to the NVR's analytics engine.
  2. How much storage do I need for 16 cameras recording continuously?

It depends on resolution, frame rate, and scene activity. As a general guide, 16 channels recording at 1080p using H.265+ typically consume between 2TB and 5TB per week depending on motion levels. At 4K resolution the figure increases further. Each HDD bay supports drives up to 10TB, giving a maximum of 20TB raw storage across both bays. Calculate your required retention period - 7, 14, or 30 days - before selecting drive sizes.
  3. Will this NVR power PTZ cameras through the PoE ports?

It depends on the PTZ model's power draw. The NVR supports IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at PoE across its 16 ports, but the total PoE power budget is shared across all active ports. High-power PTZ cameras - particularly those requiring PoE+ (802.3at Class 4, up to 30W per port) - will draw significantly from the shared budget. Check the total PoE power budget in the datasheet against the combined draw of all planned cameras before specifying PTZ units.
  4. Does this NVR support remote viewing on a phone?

Yes. The NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro supports remote access through the Hik-Connect mobile app on iOS and Android, as well as iVMS-4200 desktop software on Windows and Mac. Live view, recorded footage playback, and AI event notifications are all accessible remotely, provided the NVR has an active internet connection and is registered to a Hik-Connect account.
  5. Can I connect this NVR to an existing network and still access cameras locally?

Yes. The NVR has a dedicated uplink port for your LAN and separate PoE ports for cameras. Camera traffic on the PoE ports is isolated from the main network, which means IP address conflicts between cameras and your existing network devices are avoided. The NVR appears on your LAN as a single device while managing all 16 camera connections internally.
  6. How does the AI analytics on this NVR reduce false alarms compared to standard motion detection?

Significantly. Standard motion detection triggers on any pixel change - a branch moving, a car's headlights sweeping across a wall, or a change in lighting. The AI analytics in the NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro classifies detected objects as human or vehicle before generating an alert. Events that do not match those classifications are filtered out. For sites that previously received dozens of irrelevant motion notifications per night, this typically reduces alert volume to only events that warrant a genuine response. This filtering is part of the Security Australia stocked HiLook NVR range and requires no additional subscription or cloud service.
  7. Does this NVR support RAID for drive redundancy?

No. The dual HDD bays on the NVR-216MH-K/16P Pro are configured for maximum storage capacity, not RAID mirroring. Both drives operate independently, storing footage to extend total capacity rather than duplicating data across drives. If drive-level redundancy is a requirement for your site - such as in a critical infrastructure or insurance-specified install - you would need to look at a higher-tier Hikvision NVR that supports RAID 0/1 configurations.
