Product Overview

Model: HIK-2XE6242FIS6

Who This Is For

For facilities engineers and security specifiers who need certified camera coverage inside classified hazardous zones - this is not a general-purpose industrial camera. The Hikvision HIK-2XE6242FIS6 is built specifically for environments where conventional equipment cannot legally or safely operate: oil and gas processing facilities, chemical storage plants, offshore marine installations, and underground mining operations. ATEX and IECEx dual certification confirms the camera is rated safe for use where combustible gases, vapours, or dust are present. The 304 and 316L stainless steel housing resists aggressive chemical exposure and saltwater corrosion, while IP68 ingress protection handles continuous submersion and high-pressure washdowns. At 4MP with 30m IR and 120dB WDR, it delivers usable footage in the extreme lighting conditions common to flare-lit or processing-lit industrial sites. If your installation requires zone compliance documentation, this model is built to meet it.

What This Camera Actually Does

ATEX & IECEx Zone Certification

Dual certification under both ATEX and IECEx schemes means this camera is legally compliant for deployment in classified hazardous zones where ignition risk from electrical equipment must be controlled. This is not a rating that can be substituted with a standard IP-rated camera.

316L Stainless Steel Housing

The combination of 304 and 316L stainless steel provides resistance to both mechanical impact and chemical corrosion. Grade 316L performs specifically in chloride-heavy environments such as offshore platforms and coastal processing plants where standard alloys rapidly degrade.

120dB Wide Dynamic Range

Industrial sites frequently combine intense artificial lighting, glare from reflective surfaces, and deep shadowed zones in the same frame. 120dB WDR balances these extremes simultaneously so the camera produces legible footage rather than washed-out or blocked-out images.

DarkFighter Low-Light Imaging

Hikvision DarkFighter technology extends usable colour imaging into very low ambient light conditions. Combined with 30m IR illumination, the camera maintains identifiable footage in unlit tunnels, mine shafts, or night-time outdoor industrial areas where standard sensors produce noise or complete blackout.

IP68 Ingress Protection

IP68 is the highest standard ingress rating, confirming the enclosure is sealed against continuous dust ingress and rated for sustained submersion beyond 1m depth. This suits washdown areas, flood-prone plant rooms, and installations exposed to heavy rain or direct water spray.

Who Buys This Model

  • Oil and Gas Facility Security Teams: Specifying compliant CCTV coverage for classified zones around processing equipment, storage tanks, and loading terminals where ATEX and IECEx certification is a mandatory procurement requirement.
  • Chemical Plant HSE Managers: Installing cameras in areas where solvent vapours, reactive chemicals, or explosive dust atmospheres require zone-rated electrical equipment across the facility footprint.
  • Underground Mining Operators: Deploying cameras in tunnels, shafts, and plant rooms where methane or coal dust is present and only certified explosion-proof equipment is permitted by regulation.
  • Marine and Offshore Integrators: Specifying cameras for vessel engine rooms, pump decks, and offshore platform classified areas where 316L stainless steel construction is required to resist saltwater corrosion long-term.

Honest Assessment

This camera fills a very specific compliance requirement that most industrial cameras cannot satisfy. ATEX and IECEx dual certification, 316L stainless steel construction, and IP68 sealing make it a technically justified choice for hazardous zone deployments - not an upgrade from a standard outdoor camera. The 4MP sensor with DarkFighter and 120dB WDR gives it genuine imaging capability, not just compliance credentials, so footage quality holds up in the harsh lighting and low-light conditions common to industrial environments. The fixed 6mm lens suits medium-range coverage of defined areas; it will not serve long-approach monitoring of perimeter fencing or access roads effectively. For sites where hazardous zone certification is not required, the cost and sourcing complexity of this model is unnecessary - a standard IP66/67 industrial bullet camera available through Security Australia would be the appropriate direction. Specify this model only where zone documentation is a real requirement.

Before You Buy

Zone Classification First: Confirm your site's hazardous area classification before ordering. ATEX and IECEx certifications are zone-specific - verify that this model's rated zone matches your facility's documented classification. Your electrical inspector or HSE team will need to sight the certification documents, which are available in the product datasheet linked below.

Cable Entry and Conduit: Explosion-proof cameras require appropriately rated cable glands and conduit entries to maintain zone integrity. The sealed stainless steel housing does not help if the cabling path introduces a non-compliant breach. Consult a certified hazardous area electrician before committing to a conduit routing plan.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: Your site has a documented ATEX or IECEx zone classification and procurement requires certified explosion-proof cameras - this model carries both certifications and the 316L stainless housing for corrosive environments.
  • Good match if: You need 4MP coverage inside an underground mine, offshore pump deck, or chemical processing area where DarkFighter low-light performance and 120dB WDR are needed alongside zone compliance.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site is a standard outdoor industrial environment without a classified hazardous zone - a heavy-duty IP66/IP67 rated industrial bullet camera will provide equivalent imaging performance at significantly lower cost and complexity.

Real-World Scenarios

LPG Storage Terminal

Mounted to cover valve manifolds and loading arms at an LPG storage terminal. ATEX certification satisfies the site's classified zone requirements. The 6mm lens covers the immediate work area and 120dB WDR handles glare from reflective tank surfaces.

Underground Coal Mine

Deployed in a mine tunnel where methane and coal dust atmospheres require IECEx-rated equipment. DarkFighter imaging and 30m IR illuminate the shaft in total darkness. The IP68 seal holds against dust ingress and water seepage from rock faces.

Offshore Platform Pump Deck

Installed on an offshore oil platform pump deck exposed to constant salt spray and hydrocarbon vapours. The 316L stainless steel housing resists chloride corrosion over multi-year service intervals, while ATEX certification satisfies the platform's classified area documentation requirements.

Chemical Processing Plant

Covering a solvent handling area inside a chemical plant where vapour concentration zones prevent use of standard cameras. IECEx certification clears regulatory requirements, and 4MP resolution gives security teams identifiable footage of personnel and equipment in the monitored zone.

Marine Vessel Engine Room

Fitted in a vessel engine room where fuel vapour risk and high-pressure washdown cycles are routine. IP68 withstands direct hose-down cleaning. The stainless steel construction resists the combination of heat, moisture, and fuel residue typical of below-deck marine environments.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your installation is within a documented ATEX or IECEx classified hazardous zone and your procurement requires dual-certified explosion-proof camera equipment with corrosion-resistant stainless steel housing.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site is a standard harsh outdoor environment without a classified hazardous zone - a heavy-duty IP66/IP67 industrial bullet camera will deliver equivalent imaging at a lower cost and without the compliance overhead of explosion-proof specification.
  • Pairs well with: ATEX-rated junction boxes, certified explosion-proof cable glands, and a compatible NVR with H.265 decoding to maximise storage efficiency from this camera's compression output.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera carry both ATEX and IECEx certification?

Yes. The HIK-2XE6242FIS6 is certified under both the ATEX scheme (European hazardous area standard) and the IECEx scheme (international standard recognised in Australia, Asia-Pacific, and many other jurisdictions). Both certifications confirm the camera is assessed safe for use in environments where explosive atmospheres from combustible gases, vapours, or dust may be present. Your site's hazardous area classification documents will specify which scheme your facility requires.
  2. What does IP68 mean in practice for this housing?

IP68 confirms the enclosure is fully sealed against dust ingress and rated for continuous submersion beyond 1 metre depth. In practice this means the camera can withstand direct high-pressure washdowns, flooding events, and sustained exposure to moisture-saturated environments - conditions common in processing plants, underground mines, and marine installations. It exceeds the IP66 and IP67 ratings found on most standard outdoor cameras.
  3. Why does this camera use 316L stainless steel rather than standard aluminium housing?

316L stainless steel provides significantly greater resistance to chloride corrosion compared to standard aluminium alloys. This matters in offshore marine environments, coastal chemical plants, and facilities where cleaning chemicals or saltwater exposure are ongoing. Grade 304 stainless is used throughout the body while 316L is applied in areas of highest corrosion risk. Standard aluminium camera housings - even when powder-coated - degrade measurably faster in these conditions.
  4. Will this camera work in total darkness inside an underground tunnel?

Yes. The camera combines Hikvision DarkFighter ultra-low-light imaging with built-in 30m infrared illumination. In a completely unlit tunnel with zero ambient light, the IR illuminators activate and the DarkFighter sensor captures usable monochrome footage at up to 30m range. In low but non-zero light conditions, DarkFighter extends colour imaging capability into light levels where standard sensors produce heavy noise or switch to IR-only mode prematurely.
  5. Does the 120dB WDR actually make a difference in industrial environments?

Yes, particularly in industrial settings. Processing plants, refineries, and offshore platforms frequently combine intense artificial lighting, reflective metallic surfaces, and deep shadowed areas within the same camera frame. At 120dB, the WDR range is wide enough to simultaneously retain detail in the brightest and darkest areas of a scene. Cameras with lower WDR ratings - typically 90-100dB on standard models - produce blown-out highlights or blocked shadows in these conditions, reducing the evidentiary value of footage. This model is stocked by Security Australia specifically for these demanding use cases.
  6. Do I need specialised cabling or glands to maintain the explosion-proof rating?

Yes. The camera's explosion-proof integrity depends on the entire installation, not just the housing. Cable entry points must use certified explosion-proof cable glands that are rated for your site's classified zone. Conduit runs through classified areas must also meet zone requirements. Using standard cable glands or unrated conduit fittings at the camera entry point voids the explosion-proof classification regardless of the camera's own certification. Consult a certified hazardous area electrician before finalising your installation design.
