Product Overview

Model: HIK-2XE6242FIS16

Who This Is For

Property managers and HSE engineers specifying surveillance for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas will find the Hikvision HIK-2XE6242FIS16 purpose-built for exactly these conditions. This is a 4MP explosion-proof bullet camera carrying both ATEX and IECEx certification, housed in 304 and 316L stainless steel and rated IP68 for complete dust and water ingress protection. The 16mm fixed lens suits medium-range corridor, pipe run, and access point monitoring across gas and oil processing facilities, chemical plants, offshore marine structures, and deep mining sites. DarkFighter low-light imaging and 120dB wide dynamic range handle the high-contrast lighting conditions common in industrial environments, while H.265 encoding keeps storage demands manageable on existing network infrastructure. This is a procurement-grade camera for sites where standard IP cameras are simply not compliant.

What This Camera Actually Does

ATEX and IECEx Certified

Certified under both ATEX and IECEx internationally recognised hazardous area schemes. This means the camera is independently assessed and approved for operation in environments where combustible gases, vapours, or dust create an explosion risk - a mandatory compliance requirement on regulated industrial sites.

316L Stainless Steel Housing

The 304 and 316L stainless steel construction resists the chemical corrosion and salt exposure found in petrochemical plants, offshore platforms, and marine environments. This is a structural choice, not a cosmetic one - it directly extends service life in conditions that destroy standard camera enclosures.

IP68 Ingress Protection

Rated IP68 for complete protection against dust ingress and sustained water immersion. On active industrial sites with high-pressure washdowns, heavy condensation, or outdoor exposure in all weather, this rating ensures the camera continues to operate without sealed housing failures.

120dB Wide Dynamic Range

120dB WDR handles extreme contrast scenarios - bright outdoor light visible through a gate or doorway against a dark interior, or floodlit processing equipment against a dark yard. Detail in both bright and shadowed areas of the frame is retained simultaneously, not sacrificed for one or the other.

DarkFighter Low-Light Imaging

Hikvision DarkFighter technology captures usable colour detail in near-darkness before switching to IR monochrome. For industrial sites with poor or inconsistent artificial lighting across large areas, this significantly improves the quality of footage before the 30m IR range takes over entirely.

H.265 Compression

H.265 encoding reduces file size compared to H.264 at the same image quality level. On multi-camera industrial installations where storage and bandwidth are shared across a large NVR or server setup, H.265 directly lowers infrastructure cost and extends the usable retention period.

Who Buys This Model

  • Oil and gas facility operators: ATEX and IECEx certification satisfies the mandatory compliance requirements for Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas around processing equipment, storage tanks, and pump stations.
  • Chemical plant HSE and security teams: The stainless steel housing and IP68 rating withstand the corrosive airborne compounds and frequent high-pressure washdown cycles common across chemical manufacturing floors.
  • Mining operations managers: Deep mine environments with combustible dust or methane present require explosion-rated equipment; the 30m IR range covers tunnel approaches and equipment bays where ambient lighting is minimal or absent.
  • Offshore and marine facility managers: Salt spray, humidity, and explosive atmosphere requirements are all addressed simultaneously by the 316L stainless steel construction and dual hazardous area certifications.
  • Industrial EPC contractors and security integrators: Specifying compliant cameras for new hazardous area builds where the site safety plan mandates certified equipment and documentation under ATEX or IECEx schemes.

Honest Assessment

The HIK-2XE6242FIS16 does what very few cameras can - operate legally and safely in explosive atmosphere zones. The dual ATEX and IECEx certifications are genuine compliance credentials, not marketing language, and the 316L stainless steel housing with IP68 protection is appropriate engineering for petrochemical, mining, and offshore environments. The 4MP sensor with DarkFighter and 120dB WDR delivers useful image quality in the difficult lighting conditions typical of industrial sites, and H.265 keeps storage requirements in check across multi-camera systems. Available through Security Australia, it is one of the few stocked explosion-proof options with this specification combination. Where this camera is not the right choice: standard commercial or light industrial sites that do not require hazardous area certification - the cost and weight of the explosion-proof housing is unnecessary there, and a conventional IP67-rated industrial bullet will perform the same imaging task at significantly lower cost.

Before You Buy

Hazardous Area Classification: Confirm the Zone classification of your installation area before procurement. ATEX and IECEx certification applies to specific zone categories and gas/dust groups - ensure this model's certification matches your site's classified zone and the explosion group relevant to the substances present. Your site's hazardous area drawing (HAD) should confirm this before the camera is specified.

16mm Lens and Field of View: The fixed 16mm lens produces a narrower field of view suited to medium-distance corridor, access point, or equipment monitoring rather than wide-area coverage. Confirm your target subject distance and coverage width before installation - a 16mm lens at close range will not cover wide entry points without additional camera positions.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: Your site is classified as a hazardous area under ATEX or IECEx schemes and you need a compliant 4MP bullet camera with IP68 protection and corrosion-resistant stainless steel housing for outdoor or washdown-exposed positions.
  • Good match if: You are monitoring a medium-range approach, corridor, or access lane in a low-light industrial environment where DarkFighter performance and 30m IR coverage are needed in a single certified housing.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site does not carry a hazardous area classification - a standard industrial-grade IP67 bullet camera will deliver equivalent or better imaging performance at considerably lower cost, and a wider lens selection will be available.

Real-World Scenarios

LNG Storage Perimeter

Mounted on a bund wall access gate at an LNG facility, the ATEX-certified housing satisfies Zone 1 area requirements. The 16mm lens covers the approach corridor, and DarkFighter handles low ambient light during night shift operations without relying solely on IR.

Chemical Plant Washdown Zone

Installed above a chemical mixing floor subject to daily high-pressure washdown, the IP68 rating and 316L stainless steel housing prevent corrosive ingress. The 120dB WDR manages contrast between floodlit equipment and darker walkway areas in the same frame.

Underground Mining Tunnel

Deployed in a deep mine tunnel section where methane is present, the IECEx certification meets the safety compliance requirement. The 30m IR range covers the tunnel approach in complete darkness, with 4MP resolution retaining enough detail to identify personnel and equipment movement.

Offshore Platform Deck

Fixed to a bracket on an offshore production platform deck, the 316L stainless steel housing resists salt spray corrosion over extended service intervals. IP68 protection prevents water ingress during heavy weather, and the explosion-proof certification covers the platform's classified deck areas.

Fuel Depot Access Lane

Positioned to monitor the tanker access lane leading into a fuel storage depot, the 16mm lens provides the reach to cover a straight approach. H.265 compression keeps footage storage requirements manageable on a site NVR shared across multiple explosion-rated camera positions.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your installation site carries a formal hazardous area classification requiring ATEX or IECEx certified equipment, and you need a fixed-lens 4MP bullet with IP68 and corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction in a single unit.
  • You may need a different model if: Wide-area coverage is the priority - a standard industrial PTZ or multi-sensor camera without the explosion-proof housing will provide pan, tilt, and zoom flexibility not available with this fixed 16mm lens format, and may be more appropriate for non-classified industrial perimeters.
  • Pairs well with: A Hikvision-compatible NVR with H.265 support and sufficient channel capacity for multi-camera hazardous area deployments, ideally with ATEX-rated conduit and junction box accessories for a fully compliant installation.

Common Questions

  1. Is this camera certified for use in Zone 1 explosive atmosphere areas?

Yes. The HIK-2XE6242FIS16 carries both ATEX and IECEx certifications, which are the primary internationally recognised schemes for equipment approved in explosive atmosphere locations. Before installation, confirm the specific zone classification, gas group, and temperature class of your site against this model's certification documentation to verify it matches your classified area.
  2. What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx certification?

Both cover explosive atmosphere compliance, but they apply in different regulatory regions. ATEX is the European Union and UK scheme and is widely referenced across Australian and international industrial standards. IECEx is the international IEC scheme recognised in Australia and many Asia-Pacific jurisdictions. This camera holds both, which supports procurement across multiple regulatory environments without needing separate certified alternatives.
  3. Will this camera work in a marine or offshore environment?

Yes. The 316L stainless steel housing is specifically chosen for its superior corrosion resistance to salt spray and high-humidity environments, making it appropriate for offshore platform decks, marine terminals, and coastal industrial structures. The IP68 ingress protection rating prevents water entry under sustained exposure conditions common on marine installations.
  4. Does the 16mm lens suit wide-area coverage, or is it for longer-distance monitoring?

The 16mm fixed lens is suited to medium-to-longer-distance monitoring in a narrower field of view. It is not the right choice for covering a wide entry point or large open area from a single camera position. It works well on access lanes, pipe corridors, doorways, and equipment approaches where the target is at distance and width coverage is less critical than reach and detail.
  5. Does this camera perform in complete darkness?

Yes. The built-in 30m IR illuminators allow the camera to capture monochrome footage in zero ambient light conditions. Before switching to full IR, DarkFighter technology extracts colour information at very low light levels, which is useful in partially lit industrial environments where some residual lighting exists but is insufficient for standard imaging.
  6. What NVR or recording system does this camera require?

Any Hikvision-compatible NVR supporting H.265 video compression and the camera's resolution will work. For multi-camera hazardous area installations, confirm the NVR has sufficient channel capacity and that the network infrastructure between the camera location and the recording point is installed in accordance with your site's hazardous area electrical requirements. The camera itself connects over a standard IP network interface. The HIK-2XE6242FIS16 is stocked by Security Australia alongside compatible Hikvision NVR options.
  7. How does 120dB WDR improve image quality in industrial environments?

120dB WDR handles high-contrast scenes where standard cameras lose detail. On industrial sites, this commonly occurs where bright outdoor light is visible through openings in a darker interior, where high-intensity work lighting creates strong shadows, or where reflective equipment surfaces sit next to dark backgrounds. At 120dB, the camera retains usable detail in both bright and dark areas of the same frame simultaneously.
