Product Overview
Model: DS-2CD2385G1-I
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying outdoor cameras for residential complexes, small commercial premises, or mixed-use sites will find the Hikvision DS-2CD2385G1-I a practical fit. It delivers 8MP resolution in a turret housing designed for eave, soffit, and wall mounting - the kind of install that needs to handle a full Australian climate range without constant maintenance. The DarkFighter sensor pulls usable colour detail down to 0.008 lux before switching to infrared, covering approaches and car parks where lighting is inconsistent. The 120 dB true WDR manages the harsh contrast between shaded covered areas and bright open yards - a scenario that causes ordinary cameras to blow out highlights or lose shadow detail entirely. With IP67 protection, PoE or 12 VDC power options, and lens variants from 2.8 mm to 12 mm, it fits a wide range of outdoor positions without needing a separate housing or adapter.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP Outdoor Resolution
3840 x 2160 pixels at 20 fps gives you enough image data to digitally zoom in on recorded footage and still identify a face, read a number plate, or confirm a vehicle colour - without upgrading to a higher-tier camera or adding multiple units to a single approach.
DarkFighter Low-Light Sensitivity
The 1/2.5" progressive scan CMOS sensor reaches a minimum illumination of 0.008 lux in colour mode. In practical terms, this means the camera captures usable colour footage in dimly lit car parks or pathways before IR activates, giving footage that is easier to act on.
30m EXIR 2.0 Night Vision
EXIR 2.0 distributes infrared illumination more evenly than older IR arrays, avoiding the washed-out centre and dark edges common in entry-level cameras. At 30 m range it covers a standard driveway or car park lane end-to-end in complete darkness.
120 dB True WDR
True wide dynamic range at 120 dB handles scenes where a bright open area and a shadowed covered zone appear in the same frame. Entry and exit points - gates, roller doors, covered walkways - are the most common application where this spec makes a visible difference.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ intelligent compression significantly reduces the bitrate needed to record 8MP footage compared to H.264. This keeps NVR storage requirements and network bandwidth manageable when running multiple cameras on the same system - important at this resolution.
Smart Detection Events
On-camera line crossing, intrusion detection, object abandoned, and object removed detection generate targeted alerts rather than constant motion-triggered recordings. This reduces the volume of irrelevant footage that needs to be reviewed after an incident.
Who Buys This Model
- Body corporate and strata managers: Specifying outdoor cameras for shared driveways, visitor car parks, and common entry points where 8MP resolution and WDR are needed to handle mixed lighting without costly lighting upgrades.
- Small business owners: Installing on shopfront exteriors, rear loading areas, or retail car parks where a single camera needs to cover a wide arc - the 2.8 mm lens option gives 110.7 degrees horizontal coverage from an eave position.
- Security installers on PoE NVR systems: Running Cat5e or Cat6 to eave mounting points and powering everything from a single PoE switch or NVR - this camera supports 802.3af PoE, which is standard on most Hikvision and compatible NVR equipment.
- Site managers in harsh environments: The -40 °C to +60 °C operating range and IP67 rating make this a practical choice for sites that see extreme heat, dust, or heavy rain - construction compounds, agricultural properties, and coastal installs included.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CD2385G1-I does three things well at its price point: it delivers genuine 8MP outdoor resolution with a low-light sensor that performs before IR kicks in, it handles high-contrast scenes through real 120 dB WDR rather than digital simulation, and it keeps storage manageable through H.265+ compression. The IP67 housing and wide operating temperature range mean it holds up in outdoor conditions without additional weatherproofing. For most eave, soffit, and wall installations on homes, small commercial sites, or residential complexes, this covers the brief without compromise. What it will not do is cover long approaches beyond 30 m at night - sites with extended perimeters or wide-open yards will be better served by a bullet-format camera with a longer IR range. It also has no built-in microphone, so two-way audio or audio event detection requires an external audio device. The DS-2CD2385G1-I is stocked by Security Australia and is available in multiple fixed lens variants.
Before You Buy
Lens Variant Selection: This camera is sold by fixed lens variant - 2.8 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, or 12 mm. The 2.8 mm suits wide-angle coverage of entry points and car parks from close eave positions. The 4 mm is the most commonly specified general-purpose option. The 6 mm and 12 mm are suited to longer-distance monitoring of approaches or gates where subject identification at range is the priority. Confirm the required field of view before ordering, as the lens cannot be swapped post-purchase.
Storage and Bitrate Planning: At 8MP with H.265+ compression, continuous recording still generates a higher bitrate than a 4MP or 5MP camera. When specifying NVR storage alongside this camera, calculate recording retention based on H.265+ bitrate figures rather than H.264 defaults - most NVR storage calculators will overestimate storage requirements if set to H.265 rather than H.265+. The onboard MicroSD slot (up to 128 GB) supports local edge recording as a backup or standalone option.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are mounting to an eave or soffit at a residential complex, retail premises, or small commercial site and need 8MP resolution to cover a car park, entry point, or pedestrian path with reliable low-light performance before IR activates.
- Good match if: Your installation runs PoE from an NVR or PoE switch and you want H.265+ compression to keep bitrate and storage requirements realistic when running 4 or more 8MP cameras on a single system.
- You may need a different model if: The monitored approach exceeds 30 m or you need optical zoom to adjust coverage after installation - a motorised varifocal turret or a long-range bullet camera from the Security Australia range would be more appropriate for those requirements.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 8MP outdoor resolution in a compact turret form factor with DarkFighter low-light performance, true 120 dB WDR, and IP67 protection for eave, soffit, or wall mounting on a PoE system.
- You may need a different model if: The monitored area requires more than 30 m of IR range at night, or the site has long open approaches - a long-range outdoor bullet camera with a higher IR rating will cover those distances more effectively.
- Pairs well with: A Hikvision-compatible PoE NVR with H.265+ decoding support - this ensures the compression benefits translate directly into reduced storage usage and keeps the system manageable when scaling to multiple cameras.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work with a standard PoE NVR or switch?
Yes. The DS-2CD2385G1-I supports IEEE 802.3af PoE, which is the standard PoE specification used across most Hikvision NVRs and compatible PoE switches. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera, eliminating the need for a separate power run to the mounting point. -
Will this camera record in colour at night without IR?
Yes, in low-light conditions before complete darkness. The DarkFighter sensor reaches a minimum illumination of 0.008 lux in colour mode, which is enough to capture colour footage in dimly lit areas such as car parks or pathways with ambient street lighting. In true darkness (0 lux), the camera switches to black and white using EXIR 2.0 infrared at up to 30 m. -
What is the maximum frame rate at full 8MP resolution?
20 fps at 3840 x 2160. This is the maximum frame rate at full 8MP resolution. For most surveillance applications - entry monitoring, car park coverage, perimeter detection - 20 fps is sufficient for identifying movement, faces, and vehicles. If 25 or 30 fps is a hard requirement, this camera operates at a lower resolution to achieve those rates. -
Does this camera support two-way audio?
No. The DS-2CD2385G1-I does not have a built-in microphone or speaker. It has no two-way audio capability. If audio recording or audio-based alerts are required, an external microphone with audio input support on the connected NVR would be needed - or a different camera model with built-in audio hardware should be specified instead. -
How much storage does 8MP H.265+ footage actually use?
Significantly less than H.264 at the same resolution, but planning is still important. H.265+ intelligent compression adapts to scene complexity - a static camera with low movement will use considerably less storage than a camera covering a busy car park. As a rough guide, allow for bitrate testing during commissioning rather than relying on generic NVR storage calculator defaults, which often assume H.265 rather than H.265+ rates. The onboard MicroSD slot (up to 128 GB) also provides a local recording fallback. -
Is the DS-2CD2385G1-I suitable for installation in extreme heat?
Yes. The confirmed operating temperature range is -40 °C to +60 °C, which covers Australian conditions including exposed roof installations in northern Queensland and inland regions where ambient roof temperatures can exceed standard camera ratings. The IP67 housing also provides full dust-tight protection, relevant for outback and agricultural sites. The DS-2CD2385G1-I is available through Security Australia in multiple fixed lens variants to suit different installation requirements. -
Can the smart detection features be used without a Hikvision NVR?
Yes, with limitations. Line crossing, intrusion detection, and the other on-camera smart events are processed on the camera itself and can trigger alerts independently of the NVR, including via email or FTP if configured through the camera's web interface. However, for centralised event management, search by event type, and full smart playback functionality, a compatible Hikvision NVR or VMS that supports these event types is recommended.
