Product Overview
Model: DS-2CD2047G1-L
Who This Is For
For installers and property owners who need consistent colour footage after dark without relying on infrared. The DS-2CD2047G1-L is a compact outdoor mini bullet camera built around Hikvision's ColorVu technology - a 1/1.8" sensor paired with an F1.0 super-aperture lens and a 30m white LED to produce full-colour images in near or complete darkness. This makes it the right call for outdoor locations where colour detail matters at night - car parks, driveways, entry paths, and retail exteriors where a standard IR camera would show only greyscale. The 2.8mm fixed lens suits closer mounting positions with a wide field of view, and the IP67 housing handles rain and dust without issue. With onboard storage up to 256GB via microSD, it can operate independently from a recorder when needed, which suits installers setting up standalone coverage points or redundancy positions on larger sites.
What This Camera Actually Does
Full-Colour Night Imaging
The F1.0 aperture lens combined with the 30m white LED illuminator means the camera captures colour footage even in complete darkness. You get clothing colours, vehicle colours, and facial tone detail that standard IR cameras simply cannot deliver at night.
4MP Resolution at 25fps
At 2560 x 1440, this camera captures enough detail to review and identify subjects across the coverage area. The 25fps frame rate keeps motion smooth during playback, which matters when reviewing entries, vehicle movements, or incidents after the fact.
120dB Wide Dynamic Range
WDR at 120dB handles scenes with strong contrast - bright sun behind a subject, a lit doorway against a dark background, or headlights in a car park. Both the bright and shadowed areas stay visible in the same frame rather than one washing the other out.
Onboard MicroSD Storage
The built-in microSD/SDHC/SDXC slot supports cards up to 256GB. This allows the camera to store footage locally, which is useful as a standalone coverage point, for NVR backup redundancy, or at remote locations where network storage is not available.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ reduces the data output compared to H.264 while maintaining image quality. On a multi-camera NVR, this extends storage retention and reduces bandwidth demand across the network - which becomes relevant when running multiple cameras on a shared switch or recorder.
IP67 Weatherproof Housing
IP67 confirms full dust ingress protection and the ability to withstand temporary water immersion. In practical terms, this camera handles Australian weather conditions - driven rain, dust exposure, and coastal humidity - without requiring an additional enclosure or weather shield.
Who Buys This Model
- Residential installers: Mounting on eaves or fascia to cover driveways and side gates where colour at night is needed to identify vehicles and clothing - something a standard IR bullet cannot provide.
- Small business owners: Covering car parks, alfresco areas, or shopfronts where staff or customers are present at night and colour detail in footage adds usable evidentiary value.
- Strata and property managers: Adding standalone coverage points at bin enclosures, visitor car parks, or building entries where running back to an NVR is not practical and onboard microSD storage handles local recording.
- Installers replacing ageing cameras: Swapping out older bullet cameras on existing cable runs where a compact footprint and H.265+ compression help the new camera fit within recorder bandwidth limits already in place.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CD2047G1-L does its best work in outdoor positions where colour at night is more useful than long-range IR reach. The F1.0 lens and white LED combination genuinely produces colour images in low light that a conventional IR camera would render in greyscale - that is a real and meaningful difference when reviewing footage for identification. The 120dB WDR handles mixed-lighting scenes that would clip or underexpose on cameras with lower dynamic range ratings. The 2.8mm fixed lens delivers a wide angle well suited to close-to-medium range coverage.
Where this camera is not the right fit: the 2.8mm lens is not suited to monitoring long approaches, laneways, or perimeter fences at distance - a varifocal or longer fixed-lens bullet will serve those scenarios better. The white LED also produces visible light, which may not suit positions where discreet or invisible illumination is required. This model is available through Security Australia alongside compatible NVRs and PoE switches if you are building out a full system.
Before You Buy
Lens Angle vs Mounting Distance: The 2.8mm fixed lens gives a wide field of view, which works well at mounting heights between 2.5m and 4m for driveway and entry coverage. If you are mounting higher than 4m or covering a long narrow approach (10m or more), the 2.8mm angle will spread the image wide and reduce effective identification distance. Consider a 4mm or 6mm fixed-lens variant for those positions rather than trying to compensate in post.
White LED Visibility: The white LED illuminator emits visible warm light up to 30m. Unlike IR, it will be noticeable to anyone in the area. This is typically not an issue for driveways or entries, but factor it in if the installation brief calls for unobtrusive or covert-style monitoring, where a full-colour turret or dome with a less visible profile may be a better fit.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need colour footage after dark at a residential driveway, car park, or outdoor entry where the 30m white LED illuminator covers the full scene and the 2.8mm wide-angle lens suits your mounting distance.
- Good match if: You are adding a standalone coverage point where network storage is not available and the onboard microSD slot (up to 256GB) allows local recording without a dedicated NVR connection.
- You may need a different model if: Your target area is a long approach, fence line, or extended perimeter where identification at distance is the priority - a varifocal bullet or longer fixed-lens outdoor camera with IR will give you more effective reach for those positions.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Colour identification at night is more important than long-range reach - the F1.0 lens and white LED deliver genuine colour imaging in complete darkness where a standard IR bullet shows only greyscale.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation requires monitoring a long driveway, access road, or perimeter fence line at distance - a varifocal bullet with IR illumination will provide better subject identification at range than a 2.8mm fixed lens can achieve.
- Pairs well with: A Hikvision PoE NVR with H.265+ support for centralised recording, or a PoE switch for multi-camera deployments where the onboard microSD provides per-camera redundancy storage.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera actually record colour footage at night, or does it switch to black and white?
Yes. The DS-2CD2047G1-L records colour footage continuously, including at night. The F1.0 super-aperture lens draws in significantly more light than a standard F1.4 or F1.6 lens, and the built-in white LED illuminator fills in the remaining light requirement. The camera does not switch to an IR greyscale mode - colour imaging is maintained at 0 Lux with the supplemental white light active. -
Will the white LED be visible to people in the area?
Yes. Unlike infrared illuminators, the white LED on this camera emits visible warm white light. People in the coverage area will see it. This works well as a deterrent in some applications but may not suit installations where unobtrusive or discreet camera placement is a priority. Factor this into your camera position planning. -
Does this camera work without an NVR connected?
Yes. The built-in microSD slot supports cards up to 256GB, allowing the camera to record locally without being connected to a network video recorder. This makes it suitable as a standalone coverage point or for locations where running cable back to a central recorder is not practical. Footage can be accessed via the Hik-Connect app remotely. -
What does the 120dB Wide Dynamic Range rating mean in a real installation?
It means the camera can handle scenes with significant brightness contrast in the same frame without losing detail. At 120dB, a subject standing in front of a bright window, lit doorway, or vehicle headlights will remain visible in the image rather than silhouetting. Cameras with lower WDR ratings - typically 90dB to 100dB - will clip or crush in the same conditions, losing either shadow or highlight detail. -
How far does the 2.8mm lens actually cover at a standard mounting height?
At a mounting height of around 3m, the 2.8mm lens provides a wide horizontal field of view suited to covering driveways, entries, and open outdoor areas within approximately 8-12m effectively for identification purposes. Beyond that range, subjects will appear smaller in frame. If your primary coverage target is further away, a 4mm or 6mm fixed lens on a compatible model will deliver better identification distance from the same mounting point. -
Will this camera work with my existing Hikvision NVR?
In most cases, yes. The DS-2CD2047G1-L uses the standard Hikvision ONVIF-compatible protocol and H.265+/H.264 compression. It is compatible with Hikvision NVRs that support 4MP channels. Confirm your NVR's maximum channel resolution and total bandwidth capacity before adding this camera to an existing system, particularly if other cameras are already consuming a significant portion of the recorder's available bandwidth. The stocked range of compatible NVRs is listed on the Security Australia website. -
Is the IP67 rating sufficient for Australian outdoor conditions?
Yes. IP67 confirms complete protection against dust ingress and protection against temporary water immersion. For typical outdoor mounting on eaves, walls, and fascias in Australian conditions - including coastal humidity, rain, and dust - IP67 is the standard rating for outdoor cameras and is adequate for these applications. It does not require an additional weatherproof enclosure for normal outdoor installation.
