Product Overview
Model: Q3548-LVE
Who This Is For
For security managers and installers who need a high-resolution outdoor dome that can do more than just record, the AXIS Q3548-LVE is built around that brief. This is an 8MP AI-powered outdoor dome with Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR, suited to environments where image detail under variable or challenging lighting is non-negotiable - think covered carparks, building entries, retail forecourts, and transport hubs. The built-in AXIS Object Analytics DLPU means classification between people and vehicles runs on the camera itself, reducing false alerts without relying on server-side processing. The motorised varifocal lens and IK10 vandal-resistant housing make it a sensible specification for installations where access post-commission is difficult or where tampering is a realistic concern. If your brief requires 4K detail, AI-driven scene analytics, and a camera that performs after dark without supplementary lighting, this model is worth a close look.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP 4K Resolution
At 3840x2160, the Q3548-LVE captures enough detail to read signage, identify clothing, or extract faces from a wide field of view without needing to zoom in during recording. This matters most in open scenes like forecourts and lobby entries where you need broad coverage and usable detail simultaneously.
AXIS Lightfinder 2.0
Lightfinder 2.0 is Axis's low-light sensor optimisation, producing colour images in scenes that would push lesser cameras into grainy monochrome. For poorly lit external areas - covered carparks, rear entries, stairwells - this means usable colour footage without relying on supplementary lighting.
Forensic WDR
Forensic WDR manages extreme contrast within the same frame - bright outdoor glare alongside shaded interior zones. Building entrances with glass facades are the classic problem this solves: the camera holds both the bright exterior and the darker interior legible at the same time.
On-Camera AI Analytics
AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera's dedicated deep learning processing unit. The camera classifies objects as people or vehicles at the edge, triggering alerts only on relevant detections. This offloads processing from your VMS server and reduces the alert noise that comes with standard motion detection.
Motorised Varifocal Lens
The motorised varifocal lens allows remote zoom and focus adjustment without physical access to the camera after mounting. On a multi-storey building or a location where ladder access is disruptive, this means fine-tuning coverage from the VMS rather than returning to site with a lift.
IK10 Vandal Resistance
IK10 is the highest standard impact rating for camera housings, meaning the dome can withstand a significant direct blow without disabling the optics. For public-facing installations at eye level or low-ceiling environments, this rating is the threshold most commercial specifications require.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial property managers: Specifying cameras for covered carparks and building entries where Forensic WDR handles the contrast between bright outdoor light and shaded internal zones.
- Retail and shopping centre security teams: Needing 8MP detail across wide floor areas to identify individuals and read signage without tightly cropped camera angles.
- Transport and logistics operators: Running AXIS Object Analytics to separate vehicle movement from pedestrian alerts at loading docks and yard entries, reducing alarm fatigue on monitoring stations.
- Institutional facilities managers: Deploying IK10-rated cameras in schools, hospitals, and government buildings where physical resilience and long service life are written into the specification.
- Integrators on AXIS ecosystem projects: Building out AXIS Camera Station or third-party ONVIF VMS environments where on-camera analytics reduces the processing load across a large camera count.
Honest Assessment
The Q3548-LVE does several things genuinely well: 8MP resolution with Lightfinder 2.0 produces consistently usable images in low ambient light, Forensic WDR handles the high-contrast scenes that catch most cameras out, and on-camera AXIS Object Analytics is a practical advantage on any site where VMS server resources are finite or where alert quality matters more than alert volume. The IK10 rating and IP66 weatherproofing position this as a camera built for permanent outdoor deployment rather than a general-purpose model pressed into service outdoors. What it will not do is provide wide-area or 360-degree coverage - if your brief requires a single camera to monitor a large open yard or multi-direction intersection, a panoramic or multi-sensor model available through Security Australia would be a more efficient approach. This is a precision outdoor dome, and it performs best when the installation brief calls for exactly that.
Before You Buy
Lens Commissioning: The motorised varifocal lens gives you remote zoom and focus adjustment, but take the time to confirm your field of view at rough zoom setting before the camera is fully secured to the mount. At 8MP, small changes in horizontal field of view significantly affect how much of the scene is covered - verify coverage against your site plan before final tightening and cable dressing.
Analytics Configuration: AXIS Object Analytics requires initial configuration through the camera's web interface or AXIS Camera Station. Line crossing and area rules are not pre-configured out of the box - allow commissioning time to define zones, set object classifications, and test trigger thresholds before handover. Skipping this step results in the analytics running in default mode, which does not reflect the intelligence the camera is capable of.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing at a building entry or covered carpark where the camera needs to handle simultaneous bright outdoor light and shaded interior zones - Forensic WDR and 8MP resolution are the confirmed capabilities that address this directly.
- Good match if: Your site has limited VMS server capacity and you need analytics running at the edge - AXIS Object Analytics on the camera's dedicated DLPU handles person and vehicle classification without server-side processing overhead.
- You may need a different model if: Your requirement is wide-area outdoor coverage from a single camera position - a panoramic or multi-sensor dome type would give broader simultaneous coverage than a single-lens varifocal dome.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a single outdoor dome that combines 8MP 4K resolution, Forensic WDR, Lightfinder 2.0, and on-camera AI analytics in an IK10-rated IP66 housing - all confirmed capabilities in this model.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation requires monitoring a large open area or multiple approach directions from one camera point - a panoramic or multi-sensor dome type provides simultaneous wide-area coverage that a single-lens dome cannot match.
- Pairs well with: An AXIS-compatible NVR or VMS with ONVIF support, and a managed PoE switch with sufficient power budget per port to support the camera's PoE draw reliably across multiple camera positions.
Common Questions
-
Does the Q3548-LVE work with third-party VMS platforms or is it locked to AXIS Camera Station?
No, it is not locked to AXIS Camera Station. The Q3548-LVE is ONVIF Profile S, G, and T compliant, meaning it integrates with any VMS that supports ONVIF - including Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, and Hikvision iVMS platforms. Full AXIS Object Analytics event data is most accessible through AXIS Camera Station or AXIS-native integrations, but basic streaming and recording work across any ONVIF-compliant system. -
Will this camera produce colour footage at night without floodlights?
Yes, in many low-light conditions. Lightfinder 2.0 is designed to maintain colour imaging at significantly lower lux levels than standard sensors, making it effective in carparks, covered entries, and areas with ambient street or safety lighting. In near-total darkness the camera will switch to monochrome IR mode using OptimizedIR illumination - colour performance depends on some ambient light being present. -
Does the Q3548-LVE require PoE+ or does standard PoE work?
Standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) is supported. The Q3548-LVE operates within the PoE Class 3 power budget, meaning a standard 802.3af-compliant switch port is sufficient - you do not need a PoE+ (802.3at) switch unless you are using additional accessories that draw extra power. Confirm your switch's per-port power budget if you are running at maximum port density. -
How does AXIS Object Analytics differ from standard motion detection on this camera?
It is substantially more specific. Standard motion detection triggers on any pixel change in a defined zone - wind, lighting shifts, or moving shadows. AXIS Object Analytics, running on the camera's dedicated deep learning processing unit, classifies detected objects as either people or vehicles before triggering an alert. This means you define rules based on object type - for example, a person crossing a line after hours - rather than any movement, which significantly reduces false alerts at busy outdoor sites. -
Is the lens adjustment on the Q3548-LVE genuinely remote, or does it still require physical access?
Genuinely remote. The motorised varifocal lens on the Q3548-LVE allows zoom and focus to be adjusted through the camera's web interface or via AXIS Camera Station without touching the camera. This is particularly useful during commissioning on elevated mounts, or when coverage needs to be refined after installation as part of a site review. Physical access to the camera is not required for lens adjustments after initial mounting. The team at Security Australia can advise on recommended zoom ranges for specific installation depths if needed. -
Does the Q3548-LVE handle coastal or harsh outdoor environments reliably?
Yes, within the scope of its IP66 and NEMA 4X ratings. IP66 confirms full dust ingress protection and resistance to powerful water jets, making it appropriate for exposed outdoor installation in Australian coastal, industrial, and wash-down environments. The housing is not rated for submersion. For sites with elevated salt-air corrosion risk, confirm mounting hardware and conduit fittings are appropriately rated for the environment alongside the camera. -
Does the Q3548-LVE support electronic image stabilisation, and when does it actually matter?
Yes, electronic image stabilisation (EIS) is a confirmed feature. It matters most when the camera is mounted on a surface subject to vibration - near HVAC equipment, on a pole exposed to wind, or on a building wall with mechanical plant nearby. EIS compensates for micro-vibrations that would otherwise cause the image to appear unsteady, which becomes more noticeable at higher zoom settings where small movement is magnified.
