Product Overview
Model: Q1806-LE
Who This Is For
For security integrators and site managers who need a single camera to cover long distances with genuine optical detail, the AXIS Q1806-LE is built around a 4.3-137mm varifocal lens delivering 32x optical zoom. That range is unusual in a fixed bullet housing - it positions this camera for perimeter fencing, large car parks, ports, and industrial yards where the subject of interest could be anywhere from 10 metres to several hundred metres away. Because the zoom is optical rather than digital, 4MP resolution is maintained across the entire focal range. The bullet housing suits pole-top, parapet, and external wall mounting at sites where a discreet dome would lack the reach required. Installers specifying long-range outdoor positions for critical infrastructure, logistics hubs, or large commercial properties will find the Q1806-LE the most direct answer to the problem of distance without sacrificing image resolution.
What This Camera Actually Does
32x Optical Zoom
The 4.3-137mm lens range means you can frame a wide perimeter scene or zoom tightly into a gate, vehicle, or individual from the same fixed mount. Resolution stays at 4MP throughout because the zoom is optical - no digital enlargement artefacts at any focal length.
Remote Focus and Zoom
Both focus and zoom are motor-driven and fully adjustable from the Axis management software after installation. No ladder return or manual adjustment is required when the scene changes or a lens position needs fine-tuning during commissioning.
AXIS Lightfinder
Axis Lightfinder technology is optimised to produce colour-accurate images in low ambient light without switching to black-and-white mode. In practical terms this means outdoor scenes lit only by low streetlighting or vehicle headlights still retain colour detail useful for identification.
Forensic WDR
Wide Dynamic Range in forensic mode is designed to handle scenes where a dark subject appears against a bright background - vehicle entry points, gate exits facing sky, or loading docks with mixed artificial and natural light - without blowing out or crushing either zone.
AXIS Object Analytics
On-camera analytics classify moving objects as human or vehicle without a separate server. Triggers can be set for line crossing or area entry, reducing the volume of motion alerts caused by foliage, lighting changes, or animals at a long-range outdoor position.
IP66/67, IK10 and NEMA 4X Rated
The housing is rated against dust ingress, sustained water ingress, and impact to IK10, with NEMA 4X corrosion resistance. These ratings are suited to coastal industrial sites, open yards, and exposed pole-top positions where weather and physical interference are genuine concerns.
Who Buys This Model
- Port and Logistics Operators: Facilities needing one camera to cover a wide berth or yard at a wide angle, then zoom optically to a vessel name, container number, or vehicle plate without repositioning the mount.
- Mining and Industrial Site Managers: Sites with long fence lines or access roads where a single high-mounted position must serve both wide-area monitoring and zoomed detail of an approaching vehicle or individual.
- Large Commercial Property Integrators: Installers specifying perimeter coverage for shopping centres, stadiums, or business parks who need to reduce camera positions while maintaining identification-quality zoom at distance.
- Critical Infrastructure Security Teams: Utilities, water treatment, and energy facilities where the combination of IK10 impact rating, NEMA 4X corrosion resistance, and remote lens management reduces maintenance visits at difficult-to-access positions.
- Security Consultants Designing Evidence-Grade Systems: Specifications requiring 4MP detail maintained across the full zoom range, with Forensic WDR for mixed-light entry points, where post-incident review quality is a documented requirement.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS Q1806-LE does its best work when the installation brief explicitly includes long-range zoom at a fixed outdoor position. The 32x optical zoom maintaining 4MP resolution, the AXIS Lightfinder low-light performance, and the on-camera AXIS Object Analytics are a genuine combination for perimeter and approach coverage at industrial or critical infrastructure scale. The remote focus and zoom capability means commissioning and scene changes do not require return visits to the physical mount, which matters when the camera is pole-top or on a parapet at height. What this camera will not do is pan or tilt - it is a fixed-mount bullet and the lens points where the housing points. If your brief requires following moving subjects across a wide arc without installing multiple cameras, a PTZ unit available through Security Australia will serve that requirement. For sites where the approach axis is defined and consistent, the Q1806-LE is the more practical and cost-efficient answer.
Before You Buy
Power Requirement: The Q1806-LE requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) due to the power draw of the motorised 32x zoom lens and housing heater. Standard 802.3af PoE switches will not supply sufficient power. Confirm your switch or midspan injector supports 802.3at before ordering, particularly on existing switch infrastructure where PoE budget per port may already be allocated.
Lens Positioning at Commissioning: At the telephoto end of the 4.3-137mm range, even small angular misalignment of the housing at install time shifts the zoomed frame considerably. Mount the housing so the intended subject sits near the centre of the wide-angle field of view before using remote zoom to fine-tune. This avoids discovering at commissioning that the zoom target falls outside the physical aiming arc of the bullet body.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: Your site has a defined long-range approach - a driveway, fence line, or access corridor - and you need 4MP detail at that distance without installing multiple cameras along the run.
- Good match if: Your camera position is difficult to access after installation and you need to adjust focal length or fine-tune focus remotely after commissioning without a return visit to the mount.
- You may need a different model if: Your monitoring requirement involves tracking subjects across a wide horizontal arc rather than a fixed approach line - a PTZ camera with pan and tilt will cover that use case more effectively.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your site has a defined approach axis and you need 32x optical zoom with 4MP resolution maintained at a fixed outdoor position, particularly where the mount is difficult to access after installation.
- You may need a different model if: Your monitoring requirement involves tracking subjects across a wide horizontal arc or responding to events across multiple directions from a single position - a PTZ camera with full pan and tilt range will be more appropriate for that use case.
- Pairs well with: A PoE+ managed switch to ensure sufficient per-port power budget, and an Axis-compatible NVR or VMS platform that supports AXIS Object Analytics event triggers for automated alerting.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch?
No. The Q1806-LE requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), not standard 802.3af PoE. The motorised zoom lens and built-in housing heater draw more power than 802.3af can supply. Before deploying, confirm each port on your switch or injector is rated 802.3at and that the total PoE budget across all ports accommodates the camera's draw without throttling. -
Does the 32x optical zoom maintain full 4MP resolution at the telephoto end?
Yes. Because the zoom is entirely optical, the 4MP sensor resolution is maintained across the full 4.3-137mm focal range. Digital zoom applied beyond the optical maximum would degrade image quality, but the Q1806-LE's 32x optical range does not require digital zoom to reach its maximum telephoto position. -
Can I adjust the zoom and focus after the camera is physically installed?
Yes. Both focus and zoom are fully motorised and remotely adjustable through Axis camera management software. This means scene changes, commissioning fine-tuning, or re-aiming within the housing's physical arc can all be done from the control room without returning to the mount - which is particularly valuable at height or in restricted-access areas. -
Does this camera pan and tilt?
No. The Q1806-LE is a fixed bullet camera - it does not pan, tilt, or rotate under software control. The 32x optical zoom is a focal length adjustment only. The camera points wherever the housing is physically aimed at installation. If your requirement includes motorised pan and tilt to follow subjects or sweep an area on command, a PTZ model is the appropriate product type. The range available through Security Australia includes PTZ options suited to outdoor perimeter use. -
Will this camera work in extreme temperatures found at Australian industrial sites?
Yes. The Q1806-LE operates from -40°C to 50°C, which covers both extreme cold at elevated or exposed positions and the high ambient temperatures found in northern Australian industrial environments in summer. The built-in housing heater activates at low temperatures to maintain lens and sensor performance. -
How does AXIS Object Analytics reduce false alarm rates at a long-range position?
AXIS Object Analytics classifies detected movement as human or vehicle on-camera, before any alert is sent. At long range, standard motion detection triggers on anything that moves - foliage, shadows, small animals, lighting changes. By filtering to human and vehicle classifications only, and combining that with configurable line crossing or zone entry rules, the volume of irrelevant alerts is substantially reduced without requiring a separate analytics server. -
Is the housing suitable for coastal or corrosive environments?
Yes. The Q1806-LE carries a NEMA 4X rating, which specifically addresses corrosion resistance from salt air, chemical exposure, and hose-down conditions. Combined with IP66 and IP67 dust and water ingress ratings, the housing is appropriate for coastal industrial sites, marine facilities, and chemical processing environments where standard outdoor housings deteriorate quickly.
