The AXIS Q1798-LE delivers 10MP bullet camera performance for operators who need long-range identification across large open areas. Its Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens with 4x optical zoom, paired with Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR illumination, captures forensic-grade detail from colour down to 0.03 lux. Requires a PoE switch and external microphone for audio capture.

Why This Model

  • Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens: The 4x optical zoom gives installers the flexibility to tune field of view from a broad 90° down to 21°, making it practical for everything from wide carpark coverage to long-distance identification at a single mounting point.
  • Lightfinder 2.0 at 0.03 lux: Retains true colour in near-total darkness, reducing reliance on IR and delivering footage that holds up under forensic review rather than reverting to grainy greyscale.
  • Axis Zipstream with H.265: Reduces bandwidth and storage demands significantly compared to standard H.264 streams, which matters when archiving high-resolution 10MP footage over extended retention periods.

Model: AXIS Q1798-LE

Who This Is For

When capturing fine detail across long approaches is the priority - perimeter fencing, entry roads, loading dock aprons, or open yards where licence plates, faces, and cargo markings all need to be resolved at distance - the AXIS Q1798-LE is built for that brief. The Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens pairs with a large 4/3-inch back-illuminated sensor to deliver 10 megapixels of resolution, giving integrators the pixel density needed for forensic-quality identification rather than just general-area awareness. With Axis Lightfinder 2.0 pushing colour visibility down to 0.03 lux and OptimizedIR covering total darkness, this camera holds usable image quality across a full 24-hour cycle. It suits critical infrastructure sites, industrial estates, ports, correctional facilities, and any installation where a single camera position needs to deliver both wide situational context and zoomed-in detail without compromise.

What This Camera Actually Does

10MP Resolution on a 4/3" Sensor

The back-illuminated 4/3-inch CMOS sensor captures up to 3712x2784 at 10 megapixels, producing high pixel density across wide scenes. At 4x optical zoom this translates to 1036 px/m at 10 metres and 207 px/m at 50 metres - enough for identification-grade detail at distance without cropping in post.

Canon 12-48mm Varifocal Lens

The Canon-manufactured F1.7-4.0 lens provides 4x optical zoom with a horizontal field of view ranging from 90 degrees at wide to 20 degrees when zoomed. This range covers everything from broad yard overviews to tightly framed approaches down a single lane or corridor, set once at install time.

Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR

Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour imaging at 0.03 lux - conditions most cameras render as near-black. When light disappears entirely, OptimizedIR switches to infrared illumination and the automatic IR-cut filter removes to deliver 0 lux monochrome footage. The transition is automatic and continuous.

Forensic WDR at 120dB

Forensic WDR up to 120dB handles scenes with extreme contrast - entry gates where headlights face the camera, covered loading bays with bright outdoor surrounds, or any situation where shadow and sunlight fall in the same frame. Detail is preserved in both regions simultaneously.

Zipstream with H.264 and H.265

Axis Zipstream actively reduces bitrate during low-activity periods while preserving full quality around motion events. Combined with H.265 compression, this directly reduces storage requirements on NVRs handling multi-channel 10MP streams - a practical consideration when running several cameras at this resolution.

Electronic Image Stabilisation and Corridor Format

Built-in electronic image stabilisation compensates for pole or mast vibration common on industrial sites. Auto-rotation including 90-degree Corridor Format lets installers orient the frame to match a driveway, fence line, or walkway without wasting resolution on irrelevant horizontal area either side of the subject zone.

Who Buys This Model

  • Critical Infrastructure Integrators: Specifying cameras for substations, water treatment sites, and transport hubs where identification-grade pixel density at distance is a compliance requirement rather than a preference.
  • Port and Logistics Security Teams: Monitoring long container yard approaches, vehicle marshalling lanes, and perimeter fence lines where 10MP resolution and the Canon varifocal lens allow a single camera position to cover extended distances with forensic detail.
  • Industrial Estate and Manufacturing Site Managers: Installing on perimeter poles or building fascias where vibration from plant equipment makes electronic image stabilisation a practical requirement for consistently sharp footage.
  • Corrections and High-Security Facility Installers: Deploying at external perimeters and vehicle access control points where 0.03 lux colour performance and 0 lux IR coverage maintain operational visibility through every lighting condition across a 24-hour cycle.
  • Enterprise Security Consultants: Designing Axis-native VMS environments where ARTPEC-8 processing, Zipstream, and the existing Axis analytics ecosystem need to integrate without middleware or compatibility workarounds.

Honest Assessment

The AXIS Q1798-LE does two things genuinely well: it resolves fine detail at range through the combination of 10MP resolution and the Canon 12-48mm optical zoom lens, and it maintains usable colour imagery in near-darkness through Lightfinder 2.0. For any site where a single fixed camera position needs to deliver both broad situational coverage and zoomed identification capability without mechanical pan or tilt, this is a strong specification. The 120dB Forensic WDR performance is also a meaningful advantage at vehicle entry points with high-contrast lighting. Where this camera reaches its limits: it carries no built-in speaker, so two-way audio is not available from this unit alone. It is also a fixed bullet - pan coverage requires additional camera positions. Sites needing active PTZ tracking or 180-degree panoramic coverage should look at different camera types available through Security Australia. Storage planning deserves attention at 10MP resolution even with Zipstream - H.265 and adequate NVR capacity should be confirmed before specifying.

Before You Buy

Lens and Zoom Setting: The Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens is set manually at installation - this is not a PTZ camera and the zoom position does not change remotely during operation. Set the zoom level to match your primary target distance during commissioning. At wide (12mm), the 90-degree horizontal field of view suits broad yard coverage; at 48mm, the 20-degree field is appropriate for narrow lane or choke-point monitoring. Confirm your target distance against the pixel density figures (1036 px/m at 10m, 207 px/m at 50m at 4x zoom) before locking the lens position.

PoE Class and NVR Compatibility: Confirm that your switch or NVR PoE port supplies sufficient wattage for this camera before installation. Also verify your NVR or VMS can handle 10MP streams - not all entry-level recorders support the AXIS Q1798-LE's maximum resolution and frame rate simultaneously across multiple channels. H.265 decoding capability on your recording platform will directly affect how many channels you can run without dropping frame rate.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are covering a long vehicle approach, perimeter fence line, or access lane where the Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens can be set to frame a specific zone and 10MP pixel density at range is required for identification-grade footage.
  • Good match if: Your site operates across a full lighting range from daylight through to complete darkness and you need colour performance at 0.03 lux plus OptimizedIR for zero-light coverage without running separate lighting infrastructure.
  • You may need a different model if: Your application requires active operator-controlled pan and tilt to follow moving subjects across a wide area - a PTZ camera is the appropriate product type for that use case.

Real-World Scenarios

Container Yard Entry Lane

Mounted on a pole at a port entry boom gate, the Q1798-LE is zoomed to 48mm to frame the lane. At 10MP, the pixel density at the licence plate position allows review footage to be used as a forensic record of every vehicle entering or exiting the facility.

Industrial Perimeter Fence Line

Installed on a steel pole mount along a factory perimeter, Corridor Format rotates the image 90 degrees to align with the fence run. Electronic image stabilisation keeps footage sharp despite vibration from nearby plant equipment or wind loading on the mount.

Covered Loading Dock

A covered bay with bright daylight outside and deep shadow inside creates a high-contrast scene that crushes detail in standard cameras. Forensic WDR at up to 120dB retains readable imagery in both the shaded dock interior and the brightly lit apron simultaneously.

Unlit Outdoor Yard - Overnight Monitoring

At a materials storage yard with no artificial lighting, Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour footage down to 0.03 lux during twilight and dusk. As light drops to zero, OptimizedIR takes over automatically. The site has continuous coverage without any supplemental lighting costs.

Correctional Facility External Perimeter

IK08 impact resistance and IP67 weatherproofing support deployment in exposed and potentially high-risk positions. Shock detection alerts operators to physical interference with the unit, while the ARTPEC-8 processor enables analytics without requiring additional server-side processing for basic event triggers.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need 10MP fixed identification coverage at a specific zone - vehicle lane, entry point, or fence segment - where a Canon varifocal lens set at install delivers the pixel density required and the scene does not change over time.
  • You may need a different model if: Your operation requires an operator to actively redirect the camera to follow subjects across a wide area - a PTZ camera with motorised pan, tilt, and optical zoom is the appropriate product type for active tracking requirements.
  • Pairs well with: A compatible Axis-native NVR or VMS platform with H.265 decoding capability and sufficient PoE budget, and a PoE switch with adequate per-port wattage for this camera class.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera work in complete darkness without adding external lighting?

Yes. The Q1798-LE reaches 0 lux with OptimizedIR illumination active. Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour footage down to 0.03 lux, and the automatic IR-cut filter switches to the 800-900nm infrared band-pass filter when light drops further. The transition between colour and IR modes is handled automatically - no manual intervention or external lighting is required for overnight monitoring.
  2. Can I adjust the zoom remotely after installation?

No. The Canon 12-48mm varifocal lens on the Q1798-LE is set manually at installation - this is not a motorised or PTZ lens. The 4x optical zoom position is locked during commissioning. If your application requires remote zoom adjustment or active repositioning during operation, a motorised varifocal or PTZ camera is the appropriate product type.
  3. What pixel density does this camera deliver at 25 and 50 metres?

At 4x optical zoom, the Q1798-LE delivers 414 px/m at 25 metres and 207 px/m at 50 metres. At 10 metres, this increases to 1036 px/m. These figures are drawn from Axis's published specification for this model. The appropriate zoom setting and mounting distance should be matched to your target zone during site planning to ensure the required identification standard is met at the actual subject distance.
  4. Does this camera support two-way audio?

No. The Q1798-LE has an audio input - supporting external microphone, line input, and balanced microphone connections - but no built-in speaker. Audio streaming is simplex (one direction only: from the camera). Two-way communication requires an external speaker connected via the audio output circuit and is not a built-in self-contained capability of this unit.
  5. Will this camera work with my existing NVR or VMS?

It depends on your recording platform. The Q1798-LE streams H.265, H.264, and Motion JPEG over standard ONVIF-compatible protocols. However, 10MP at 20fps generates a significant bitrate even with Zipstream active in H.265. Confirm that your NVR or VMS supports 10MP stream decoding and has adequate channel bandwidth before deployment. The camera integrates natively with Axis VMS platforms without additional configuration. Security Australia can assist with compatibility queries for specific recording platforms.
  6. How does Forensic WDR at 120dB affect storage compared to standard WDR?

Forensic WDR processes multiple exposures to retain detail in both bright and dark areas of the same frame, which increases computational load and can increase bitrate compared to footage with uniform lighting. In practice, Axis Zipstream partially offsets this by reducing bitrate during low-motion periods. The combination of H.265 compression and Zipstream is the recommended configuration for managing storage when Forensic WDR is active on this camera.
  7. Is the Q1798-LE rated for outdoor installation in exposed Australian conditions?

Yes. The Q1798-LE carries an IP67 ingress protection rating, meaning it is fully sealed against dust and can withstand water immersion at 1 metre for 30 minutes. The IK08 impact rating confirms resistance to 5 joule mechanical impacts. These ratings make the unit suitable for exposed outdoor positions including coastal environments, industrial sites, and locations subject to direct weather exposure.
