Product Overview
Model: M4318-PLVE
Who This Is For
For security specifiers and installers who need a single camera to deliver complete 360-degree situational awareness without blind spots, the AXIS M4318-PLVE is a compact panoramic mini dome built around a 12MP sensor, built-in IR illumination, and on-board deep learning analytics. It suits indoor and outdoor locations where mounting multiple cameras to cover a wide area is impractical or cost-prohibitive - think open-plan retail floors, hotel lobbies, school courtyards, car park entry points, and covered outdoor walkways. The vandal-resistant mini dome housing keeps the install low-profile while the deep learning engine runs AXIS Object Analytics locally, reducing nuisance alerts driven by lighting changes, foliage, or small animals. Installers specifying single-camera-per-zone coverage plans for multi-site retail, aged care facilities, or commercial building managers consolidating legacy systems will find the M4318-PLVE a practical starting point for a cleaner, fewer-camera design.
What This Camera Actually Does
360-Degree Panoramic Coverage
The fisheye lens captures a complete 360-degree overview from a single ceiling mount. One camera replaces multiple fixed cameras in open spaces, reducing cabling runs, switch ports, and NVR channel count while eliminating the coverage gaps that exist between adjacent fixed-angle cameras.
12MP High-Resolution Sensor
At 12 megapixels, the sensor retains enough detail across the full panoramic frame that dewarped virtual PTZ views remain forensically useful. When a wide overview is viewed and an operator zooms digitally into a corner of the scene, subject detail is preserved rather than breaking into pixelation.
Built-In IR Illumination
Integrated infrared LEDs allow the camera to produce usable monochrome footage after dark without relying on ambient lighting. This is particularly practical for covered outdoor areas, stairwells, or internal corridors where supplemental lighting is unavailable or undesirable.
Deep Learning Analytics (AXIS Object Analytics)
The on-board deep learning processor runs AXIS Object Analytics, classifying detected objects as humans or vehicles rather than triggering on generic pixel changes. This reduces false alarms from wind, shadows, and lighting shifts, making event-based recording and push notifications more actionable.
Compact Vandal-Resistant Mini Dome
The low-profile mini dome housing sits flush to the ceiling, minimising visual intrusion in hospitality, retail, and aged care environments. The vandal-resistant construction resists opportunistic interference, making it suitable for semi-public spaces where camera tampering is a realistic risk.
Flexible Dewarping Views
The raw fisheye stream can be dewarped in AXIS Camera Station, AXIS Device Manager, or compatible third-party VMS platforms into panoramic, quad, or virtual PTZ views. Operators can define multiple virtual camera regions without adding hardware, covering different zones from the one installed unit.
Who Buys This Model
- Retail Loss Prevention Managers: Open-plan floor layouts with wide coverage requirements benefit from a single 360-degree camera positioned at ceiling height, reducing the number of channel licences and NVR ports required versus a multi-camera fixed arrangement.
- Commercial Building Managers: Lobby, lift lobby, and corridor monitoring where a ceiling-mounted unit needs to cover all traffic directions simultaneously without revealing a specific viewing angle to visitors.
- Aged Care and Education Facility Operators: The discreet mini dome profile and full-perimeter awareness suit duty-of-care monitoring applications where visible bulk hardware is undesirable but complete coverage of communal spaces is required.
- Security Integrators Reducing Camera Count: System designers consolidating legacy multi-camera installs benefit from the 12MP resolution, which preserves enough detail in digital zoom to justify replacing 3-4 standard fixed cameras with 1 panoramic unit at strategic ceiling positions.
- IT and Physical Security Teams at Multi-Site Organisations: Standardising on AXIS OS across a network means the M4318-PLVE integrates into existing AXIS Camera Station or AXIS Device Manager deployments without additional licensing complexity.
Honest Assessment
The M4318-PLVE does two things particularly well: it removes coverage blind spots in open-plan spaces, and its deep learning engine cuts the false alarm rate that makes generic motion detection impractical in busy environments. The 12MP resolution means dewarped views are genuinely usable for identifying individuals in a scene, not just detecting movement. The built-in IR removes dependency on ambient lighting for overnight coverage in indoor or covered locations. Available through Security Australia, it represents a well-considered option for single-camera-per-zone installs where cabling and channel count are constraints. Where this camera will not compete is in long-range outdoor perimeter surveillance - the fisheye optic is optimised for wide overview at relatively short distances, not linear approaches of 30 metres or more. For that application, a fixed bullet or optical zoom camera is the more appropriate choice. Similarly, if your VMS does not support fisheye dewarping natively, the raw stream output will be difficult to interpret without additional software configuration.
Before You Buy
Dewarping Compatibility: The M4318-PLVE outputs a native fisheye stream. Confirm your VMS supports fisheye dewarping before specifying. AXIS Camera Station handles this natively, but some third-party platforms require a plugin or specific licence tier to deliver corridor, panoramic, or virtual PTZ views. Installing this camera on an incompatible VMS and watching a raw fisheye image is a common post-installation issue on panoramic deployments - check VMS compatibility before the camera goes on the ceiling.
PoE Budget Planning: A 12MP sensor with built-in IR and on-board deep learning draws more power than a standard 2MP fixed camera. Verify your PoE switch port budget per port before finalising the cabling schedule. If you are running multiple M4318-PLVE units from a single switch, calculate the total draw against the switch's per-port and total power budget to avoid unexpected throughput throttling or camera resets under load.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need a single ceiling-mounted camera to cover a complete open-plan space - a retail floor, lobby, or courtyard - and your VMS supports fisheye dewarping, allowing operators to use virtual PTZ and panoramic views without additional hardware.
- Good match if: Your site has existing AXIS infrastructure running AXIS OS and AXIS Object Analytics, and you want on-board human/vehicle classification to drive event-based recording with minimal false alerts from a wide-area overview camera.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is covering a long outdoor approach, fence line, or perimeter corridor at extended range - a fixed bullet camera with long-range IR or an optical zoom camera will serve that application considerably better than a fisheye optic designed for close-in 360-degree overview.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your priority is eliminating coverage blind spots in an open-plan space from a single ceiling-mount position, and your VMS supports fisheye dewarping to make the 12MP panoramic stream operationally useful across multiple virtual views.
- You may need a different model if: Your monitoring requirement is a long outdoor perimeter, fence line, or extended approach corridor - a fixed bullet camera or optical zoom camera delivers better detection range and image detail at distance than any fisheye optic can provide.
- Pairs well with: A compatible PoE switch with sufficient per-port power budget (IEEE 802.3at), an NVR or VMS with native fisheye dewarping support, and a corridor-style fixed camera to supplement coverage of any specific long-range exit or entry point identified during the site survey.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera require special software to dewarp the fisheye image?
Yes. The M4318-PLVE outputs a native fisheye stream, and dewarping into panoramic, quad, or virtual PTZ views requires either AXIS Camera Station, AXIS Device Manager, or a third-party VMS with confirmed fisheye dewarping support. Without compatible software, the recorded and live images will display as a circular fisheye view. Confirm your VMS vendor's fisheye support before installing this unit. -
Will this camera work outdoors?
Yes. The M4318-PLVE carries an IP66 ingress protection rating, meaning it is rated against dust ingress and direct water jets. Combined with IK10 impact resistance, it is suitable for covered outdoor locations including eaves, soffits, covered walkways, and car park entries. It is not designed for fully exposed, rain-direct installations without additional housing consideration. -
What does AXIS Object Analytics actually classify, and does it reduce false alarms?
AXIS Object Analytics uses the on-board deep learning processor to classify detected objects as humans or vehicles rather than reacting to any pixel-level motion. In practice, this means events triggered by wind-blown foliage, passing shadows, lighting changes, or small animals are filtered before an alert or recording trigger is generated. The system allows you to define specific scenario triggers - such as humans crossing a line or entering a zone - tied to classified object types rather than raw motion. -
What are the realistic DORI distances for a fisheye panoramic camera at 12MP?
Detection, observation, recognition, and identification distances for a fisheye optic are considerably shorter than for a fixed lens camera of equivalent resolution. The 360-degree field of view distributes the 12MP sensor across the full panoramic scene, meaning resolution per linear metre of scene is lower than a narrow fixed camera. The M4318-PLVE is well suited to detection and observation tasks at typical indoor distances and short outdoor covered areas. For recognition and identification at distances beyond 10-15 metres, a fixed camera with a narrower field of view will produce more reliable results. Use this camera for wide-area situational awareness and supplement with fixed cameras at access points where identification-grade imagery is a requirement. -
How many virtual camera views can be configured from the one physical unit?
This depends on the VMS or management platform in use. Within AXIS Camera Station, the dewarped fisheye stream from the M4318-PLVE can be viewed as a full panoramic overview, a quad split view, or as multiple independent virtual PTZ windows - all from the single installed camera. The number of simultaneous dewarped streams is subject to your VMS licence configuration and the processing capability of your recording server rather than a hard limit in the camera itself. -
Does this camera support PoE, and what standard does it require?
Yes. The M4318-PLVE is PoE-powered via its RJ45 port. Given the 12MP sensor, built-in IR illumination, and on-board deep learning processor, the camera operates on IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), which delivers up to 30W per port. Standard 802.3af ports (15.4W) may not supply sufficient power. Confirm your switch port type before ordering to avoid installation delays. The team at Security Australia can assist with switch compatibility questions if needed. -
Does the M4318-PLVE support edge storage or does it require an NVR?
Edge storage via a microSD card is supported, allowing continuous or event-based local recording independent of an NVR or VMS. This is useful as a fallback recording layer if the network connection to the NVR is interrupted, or for standalone single-camera deployments where a full NVR is not warranted. For multi-camera deployments and centralised management, pairing with an AXIS-compatible NVR remains the recommended architecture.
