Built as a professional outdoor PTZ camera for wide-area surveillance, the Axis P5655-E delivers HDTV 1080p at up to 60 fps with a 32x optical zoom and 4.3-137.6mm varifocal lens. Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR (up to 120 dB) keep images sharp across challenging lighting conditions, while IP66, NEMA 4X, and IK10 ratings ensure reliable operation in harsh outdoor environments. Note: two-way audio requires an external microphone and speaker via optional Axis accessory cable (not included).

Why This Model

  • 32x optical zoom with EIS: A 4.3-137.6mm varifocal range lets operators zoom in on fine detail across large sites - such as car parks or industrial yards - while electronic image stabilisation keeps footage usable even in windy or high-vibration environments.
  • Forensic WDR up to 120 dB: Scenes with extreme contrast - entrances, loading docks, sunlit carparks - stay legible in a single frame, reducing the need to review multiple camera angles for a clear identification.
  • H.265 Zipstream with focus recall: Bandwidth and storage costs drop significantly without sacrificing forensic detail, and focus recall restores sharp focus instantly when revisiting a preset position in low or shifting light.

Model: AXIS-01681-001

Who This Is For

For security integrators and facilities managers who need a single camera to cover large, unpredictable outdoor areas without sacrificing image detail at range, the Axis P5655-E PTZ Network Camera is a serious tool. With 32x optical zoom and a 4.3-137.6mm variable focal lens, it can monitor a wide car park perimeter in wide angle and snap to a licence plate or face in seconds - all within the one unit. The IK10, IP66, and NEMA 4X ratings make it a genuine all-weather option rated down to -30°C, suited to rooftop mounts, coastal facilities, and exposed industrial sites where lesser housings fail. Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR up to 120 dB handle the difficult lighting transitions common at entry gates, loading bays, and mixed indoor-outdoor zones where glare and shadow exist in the same frame.

What This Camera Actually Does

32x Optical Zoom with Focus Recall

The 4.3-137.6mm lens delivers 32x optical zoom with focus recall - meaning when the camera returns to a preset position after tracking an event, it locks focus instantly rather than hunting. In practice, presets covering entry points and loading zones are sharp the moment the camera arrives.

Forensic WDR at Up to 120 dB

Forensic WDR processes up to 120 dB of dynamic range, retaining usable detail in both the bright sky and shadowed ground level simultaneously. This is particularly important at gated entries and covered loading docks where standard WDR cameras lose either the foreground or the background.

Lightfinder 2.0 for Low-Light Colour

Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour imaging in low ambient light with reduced noise and sharper rendering of moving subjects. For outdoor perimeter monitoring after dark - where colour matters for clothing description and vehicle identification - this keeps footage forensically useful without switching to black and white.

Electronic Image Stabilisation

EIS compensates for wind-induced vibration and structural movement - common at rooftop or pole-mounted positions. At full 32x zoom, even minor vibration produces unusable footage without stabilisation. EIS keeps the image steady enough to read detail at range under real-world conditions.

Zipstream in H.264 and H.265

Axis Zipstream dynamically reduces bitrate in static or low-activity frames while preserving full detail around motion events. On a site with long quiet periods - overnight industrial monitoring, for example - this meaningfully reduces storage consumption without lowering quality on the footage that actually matters.

Hardened Housing: IP66, NEMA 4X, IK10

The triple-rated enclosure handles sustained water jets (IP66), corrosive environments including coastal and chemical sites (NEMA 4X), and impact up to IK10. Rated from -30°C to 50°C, this is a camera that does not need a protective enclosure added around it in Australian outdoor conditions.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Integrators on Large Commercial Sites: Specifying a single PTZ to cover a wide car park or open yard that would otherwise need 4-6 fixed cameras, using preset positions with focus recall to lock onto key zones on demand.
  • Port and Industrial Facility Operators: Requiring NEMA 4X and IK10 ratings for exposure to salt air, wash-down areas, or environments where impact from equipment or vehicles is a real risk.
  • Corrections and Critical Infrastructure Teams: Needing signed firmware and secure boot to meet cybersecurity compliance requirements alongside full perimeter coverage from a single camera position.
  • Transport Hubs and Logistics Centres: Using the traffic scene profile and 32x optical zoom to monitor vehicle movements across long approach roads or staging areas where a fixed lens cannot reach useful identification distance.
  • Council and Public Space Managers: Deploying on exposed poles or elevated mounts in coastal or alpine locations where the -30°C to 50°C temperature rating and EIS address environmental conditions fixed cameras cannot reliably handle.

Honest Assessment

The P5655-E does the things a demanding outdoor PTZ should do well: Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB genuinely handles the high-contrast conditions that defeat simpler cameras, Lightfinder 2.0 keeps colour footage useful after dark, and the IK10-rated housing means this camera survives environments where vandalism or accidental impact is a real risk. Zipstream storage savings are tangible on long-retention deployments, and the four scene profiles reduce the commissioning time spent manually tuning image settings per zone. Where this camera is not the right answer: it delivers 1080p, not 4K - installers who need to crop and zoom into recorded footage for forensic review across a very wide field of view may find a multi-sensor panoramic camera or a higher-resolution fixed lens option more effective. Two-way audio is supported but requires the separately purchased Axis connector accessory - it is not a plug-and-go feature. This is a product available through Security Australia suited to professional specification projects rather than small standalone installs.

Before You Buy

PoE+ Requirement: The P5655-E requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) - not standard PoE (802.3af). Confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3at before ordering. A standard PoE switch will not power this camera. Alternatively, the camera supports 24V AC/DC if a local power supply is preferred at the mount point.

Audio Accessories Not Included: Two-way audio is supported but requires either the Axis 10-pin Push-pull System Connector or the Axis Multicable C I/O Audio Power (1 m or 5 m). Neither is included in the box. If audio functionality is part of your specification, budget for the appropriate Axis accessory cable separately.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need to monitor a large open area - car park, yard, or perimeter - from a single elevated position, and require optical zoom to pull in identification-quality detail at distance without installing multiple fixed cameras.
  • Good match if: Your site is exposed to coastal salt, harsh weather, or physical impact risk and you need an IP66, NEMA 4X, IK10-rated housing without sourcing a separate protective enclosure.
  • You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is 360-degree situational awareness with no blind spots during PTZ movement - a multi-sensor panoramic camera type will cover all directions simultaneously, which a PTZ camera cannot do while tracking an event.

Real-World Scenarios

Port Entry Gate

A single P5655-E mounted on a gantry covers both the wide approach lane in overview and pulls in to read a container number or driver face at the barrier - using preset positions with focus recall to switch between views instantly without refocusing delay.

Coastal Infrastructure

Mounted on a water treatment or desalination facility exposed to salt-laden air, the NEMA 4X rating prevents internal corrosion failure that would affect a standard IP66-only PTZ within months. No additional protective enclosure required.

Large Car Park Perimeter

With 32x optical zoom, 1 camera positioned at a corner can patrol the full perimeter with programmed tour presets, then lock on to a specific bay or pedestrian on alert. Forensic WDR handles the bright headlight glare against dark surroundings at night-time entries.

Cold-Climate Outdoor Site

Mining or alpine infrastructure sites reaching -30°C overnight can run the P5655-E without a heated enclosure. The rated operating range covers Australian alpine conditions and cold-store exterior monitoring where standard outdoor PTZ cameras require additional heating accessories.

Elevated Pole Mount in Wind

At 10+ metres on an exposed pole, camera sway at 32x zoom renders footage unusable without stabilisation. EIS keeps the image steady enough to read vehicle movement and direction in the frame, making rooftop and tall pole positions viable rather than impractical.

High-Retention Storage Sites

Sites requiring 90-day or longer retention - government facilities, courts, transport operators - benefit from H.265 Zipstream reducing storage consumption during overnight quiet periods while retaining full bitrate on motion events, cutting NVR storage costs over long retention cycles.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a single outdoor camera to cover both wide-area patrol and close-range identification at 32x optical zoom, with a hardened IK10, IP66, NEMA 4X housing that handles impact and corrosive environments without an additional protective shell.
  • You may need a different model if: Complete 360-degree continuous coverage with no blind spots is the priority - a multi-sensor panoramic camera type captures all directions simultaneously and does not lose coverage while the PTZ is tracking an event in one direction.
  • Pairs well with: A PoE+ managed switch with sufficient per-port power budget, an Axis-compatible NVR or VMS platform with PTZ control support, and fixed wide-angle cameras at entry points where the PTZ would otherwise need to remain stationary.

Common Questions

  1. Does the P5655-E work with a standard PoE switch?

No. The P5655-E requires PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), which delivers up to 30W per port. A standard IEEE 802.3af PoE switch provides only 15.4W and will not power this camera. Before installation, confirm your switch or midspan injector specifically supports 802.3at on the port you plan to use. The camera also accepts 24V AC/DC as an alternative if a local power supply is easier to run to the mount point.
  2. Will this camera work in an outdoor coastal or industrial environment without an additional protective enclosure?

Yes. The P5655-E carries IP66 (sustained water jets), NEMA 4X (corrosive and wash-down environments), and IK10 (impact resistance) ratings as part of its standard housing. It does not require an aftermarket enclosure for coastal salt air, high-pressure wash-down areas, or sites at risk of physical contact. The operating temperature range of -30°C to 50°C covers Australian conditions from alpine to tropical without supplementary heating or cooling.
  3. What pan/tilt range does the P5655-E cover, and how does auto-tracking behave?

The P5655-E supports 360-degree continuous pan and 220-degree tilt range. It supports preset positions with focus recall - when the camera is directed to return to a saved preset after tracking an event, it restores focus to that position immediately rather than hunting through the zoom range. For auto-tracking behaviour and patrol tour configuration, this is managed through Axis' VAPIX API or compatible VMS. Note that while the camera is actively tracking a subject in one direction, other areas of the site are not being monitored - pairing with fixed cameras at key points addresses this gap.
  4. How does Forensic WDR at 120 dB differ from standard WDR in practice?

Forensic WDR processes a wider dynamic range - up to 120 dB - than most standard WDR implementations (typically 60-90 dB), and is specifically tuned to retain detail in both extremes of a high-contrast scene simultaneously. In practical terms, at a gated entry where a vehicle's headlights are bright and the surrounding area is dark, Forensic WDR maintains detail in the driver's face and the licence plate at the same time. Standard WDR cameras in the same scene typically retain one or the other but not both at usable detail levels.
  5. Does the P5655-E have built-in two-way audio?

Not as a plug-and-play feature. Two-way full-duplex audio is supported, but requires either the Axis 10-pin Push-pull System Connector or the Axis Multicable C I/O Audio Power (available in 1 m or 5 m), neither of which is included in the box. If two-way audio is part of your specification - for example, for operator challenge and response at a gate - budget for the appropriate Axis accessory cable and confirm your VMS supports audio streaming from this model. The team at Security Australia can advise on compatible accessories for specific configurations.
  6. Does Axis Zipstream work differently in H.264 versus H.265 on this camera?

No, the Zipstream algorithm operates in both H.264 and H.265 on the P5655-E. Both codecs use dynamic bitrate adjustment - preserving full detail on motion events and reducing bitrate in static scenes. H.265 itself is already more efficient than H.264 at the same visual quality level, so combining H.265 with Zipstream delivers the greatest storage reduction for long-retention deployments. H.264 with Zipstream remains available for sites where older NVR or VMS platforms do not support H.265 decoding.
  7. What do signed firmware and secure boot actually protect against on this camera?

Signed firmware verifies that the firmware running on the camera has not been altered since it left Axis - any modified or unauthorised firmware will be rejected at installation. Secure boot ensures that each time the camera starts, it only loads verified, Axis-authorised software. If a factory default is performed, secure boot guarantees the camera restarts completely free of any previously installed malware. Together these features address two of the most common attack vectors on network cameras: firmware replacement attacks and persistent malware that survives standard resets. For deployments on government, critical infrastructure, or compliance-bound networks, these are features worth documenting in your specification.
