Product Overview
Model: P1388-LE
Who This Is For
When precise optical framing across a wide zoom range is the priority - and the camera also needs to classify what it sees without relying on a server - the AXIS P1388-LE is built for that brief. This is an 8MP outdoor box camera with a motorised varifocal 3.9-10mm lens, designed for installers specifying fixed-position cameras on building facades, traffic corridors, perimeter fences, and commercial entry points where the scene distance changes between projects. The motorised lens means focal length is dialled in remotely after mounting, removing ladder returns for optical adjustments. The onboard deep learning processor runs AXIS Object Analytics locally - classifying humans and vehicles at the edge without depending on NVR processing capacity. It suits security integrators, facilities managers, and councils specifying permanent outdoor surveillance where image quality, analytics precision, and all-weather resilience are non-negotiable.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP Outdoor Imaging
Eight megapixels delivers frame-level detail that lower-resolution cameras cannot match - number plates, facial detail, and clothing colour are retained even when cropping a small region of the full frame for post-event review. Critical for scenes requiring evidential-grade still exports.
Motorised Varifocal Lens (3.9-10mm)
The 3.9-10mm motorised varifocal lens lets installers adjust focal length and focus remotely through the camera's web interface after the camera is physically mounted and cabled - no manual ring adjustments, no ladder returns, no second technician holding position.
Edge Deep Learning Analytics
AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera's dedicated deep learning processing unit, classifying humans and vehicles at the edge. Alerts are generated by object class, not pixel movement - dramatically reducing false triggers from wind, shadows, and environmental motion.
OptimizedIR Illumination
Built-in OptimizedIR adjusts IR intensity and beam angle to match the set focal length, preventing the overexposed centre wash typical of fixed IR on varifocal cameras. Night-time image quality stays consistent across the lens range without manual IR adjustment.
Forensic WDR
Forensic Capture WDR handles high-contrast scenes - vehicle headlights against a dark approach, bright doorways with shaded interiors - by preserving detail in both the brightest and darkest areas of the frame simultaneously rather than selecting one exposure.
IP66/IK10 All-Weather Housing
The P1388-LE carries IP66 dust and weather sealing alongside an IK10 impact resistance rating, making it suitable for exposed outdoor installations where the housing will face rain, humidity, and potential physical contact from equipment or deliberate interference.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Multi-Site Contracts: The motorised varifocal lens means one camera model covers varied mounting distances across different sites without ordering different fixed-lens variants for each job.
- Council and Government Infrastructure Teams: Edge deep learning analytics with human and vehicle classification reduces the operator load on monitoring centres - alerts arrive by object type, not by every motion event the camera detects.
- Commercial Property and Facilities Managers: Installers specifying permanent cameras on building entries, car parks, and loading zones where 8MP resolution supports post-incident detail retrieval and the IK10 housing survives contact from vehicles and equipment.
- Industrial Site Security Teams: Sites with perimeter fencing and long approach corridors where the varifocal range allows the camera to be set for the specific detection distance required - tighter frame for a pedestrian gate, wider for a full vehicle lane.
Honest Assessment
The P1388-LE does two things genuinely well. First, the combination of 8MP resolution and a motorised varifocal lens produces sharp, precisely framed images from a single housing - the remote lens adjustment removes a practical installation cost that adds up across multi-camera projects. Second, the onboard deep learning processor means AXIS Object Analytics runs without consuming NVR CPU cycles, which matters on larger systems where server-side analytics can create processing bottlenecks. The OptimizedIR adapts to the set focal length, keeping night-time image quality usable across the lens range rather than just at one setting. Where this camera will not serve well: it is a fixed-position box camera, so it cannot track movement, follow a subject, or cover a wide area with a single unit the way a PTZ or panoramic camera can. If wide-area sweep coverage or active tracking is the requirement, those camera types available through Security Australia would be a more direct fit. The P1388-LE is a precision fixed-point camera - it performs when the scene is defined and the framing is intentional.
Before You Buy
Mounting and Lens Setup: The P1388-LE is a box camera - it requires a compatible wall bracket, pendant mount, or pole mount purchased separately. The motorised varifocal lens is adjusted through the web interface post-installation, so confirm network access to the camera is available from the point of commissioning before the installer leaves site. If you are running the camera at the longer end of the 3.9-10mm range and mounting at height, confirm the IR range is appropriate for the actual subject distance at that focal length rather than the maximum IR figure alone.
PoE Power Budget: Confirm your PoE switch or injector meets the power draw requirements for this camera. The P1388-LE's feature set - including the onboard deep learning processor and OptimizedIR - has a higher power draw than a standard fixed-lens camera. Check the switch port budget before assuming any spare PoE port will carry it without issue.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are specifying a fixed outdoor position - a building entry, vehicle lane, or perimeter gate - where 8MP resolution and remotely adjustable focal length will be set once and left, and you need onboard analytics to classify objects without server-side processing load.
- Good match if: The installation environment is exposed to weather and potential physical contact, and the IP66/IK10 rating is a specification requirement rather than a nice-to-have - particularly on industrial sites, car parks, or public infrastructure.
- You may need a different model if: The requirement is active area coverage - tracking subjects across a wide scene, following movement, or covering multiple approach directions from a single camera position. A PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera type would serve that use case more directly.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 8MP fixed-position outdoor coverage with a remotely adjustable focal length and onboard deep learning analytics that runs without server-side processing - particularly where the scene is defined and the framing will be set and left.
- You may need a different model if: The requirement is active tracking or wide-area sweep coverage from a single mounting point - a PTZ camera type handles those scenarios with optical zoom, pan, tilt, and auto-tracking that a fixed box camera cannot provide regardless of resolution.
- Pairs well with: A compatible AXIS NVR or VMS-capable recorder with AXIS Object Analytics integration, and a PoE switch with sufficient per-port power budget for IEEE 802.3at cameras.
Common Questions
-
Does the P1388-LE need a server to run its analytics?
No. The P1388-LE runs AXIS Object Analytics on its own dedicated deep learning processing unit (DLPU) built into the camera. Object classification - human or vehicle - is processed at the edge, meaning analytics alerts are generated by the camera itself without consuming CPU resources on your NVR or VMS server. This matters on larger installations where server-side analytics across multiple cameras creates processing load issues. -
How does the motorised varifocal lens actually work during installation?
Once the camera is physically mounted and connected via PoE, the focal length and focus are adjusted through the camera's web interface - no manual lens ring access, no physical contact with the housing after mounting. The technician adjusts the 3.9-10mm zoom range remotely from a laptop or tablet connected to the same network, confirms the field of view on screen, locks the setting, and the lens holds position. This removes the need for a second person at the camera during commissioning. -
Will this camera work for night-time coverage of an outdoor car park?
Yes, with important context. The P1388-LE's OptimizedIR automatically adjusts IR intensity and beam angle to match the set focal length, so night-time coverage stays usable across the zoom range rather than washing out at close range or falling short at longer distances. Forensic Capture WDR also handles the contrast between headlights and surrounding darkness. For scenes with no ambient light at all, the IR illumination range should be matched against the actual subject distance at your set focal length before finalising the camera position. -
What PoE standard does the P1388-LE require?
The P1388-LE requires IEEE 802.3at PoE (PoE+), not the standard 802.3af. Standard PoE switches delivering 15.4W per port will not provide sufficient power for this camera. Confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3at (up to 30W per port) before purchasing. This is a common oversight on installs where older switches are being reused - check the per-port power specification on the switch datasheet, not just that PoE is supported. -
Does the AXIS Object Analytics on this camera detect both people and vehicles?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics on the P1388-LE classifies detected objects as humans or vehicles, and rules can be configured around each object class independently. For example, a vehicle detected in a pedestrian-only zone after hours triggers a different alert to a person detected in the same zone. This object-class logic is configured through the camera's application interface and does not require additional software licences for the base analytics functionality. -
Is a mounting bracket included with the P1388-LE?
No. The P1388-LE is a box camera and does not include a wall bracket, pendant mount, or pole mount in the box. A compatible Axis mounting accessory needs to be selected based on your installation surface and camera orientation. This is standard for the box camera format - the mounting method is specified separately to suit the site. The team at Security Australia can advise on compatible Axis mounting accessories for specific installation types. -
Will this camera work with non-Axis NVR systems?
Yes, for basic recording. The P1388-LE uses standard ONVIF and RTSP protocols, which are compatible with most modern NVR and VMS platforms. However, full AXIS Object Analytics integration - including receiving classified object alerts directly in the VMS interface - typically requires a platform with native Axis or ACAP application support, such as AXIS Camera Station or a VMS that explicitly supports Axis analytics. Basic H.265 video recording will work across ONVIF-compatible recorders; analytics event handling depends on the VMS capability.
