Product Overview

Model: IPC-D640H-Z

Who This Is For

When adjusting focal length at height without a ladder return trip is the priority, the HiLook IPC-D640H-Z delivers a practical solution for installers dealing with variable coverage demands across a single camera position. The 2.8-12mm motorised lens with autofocus lets you dial in the exact field of view remotely after mounting - a real advantage when covering a retail entrance that also needs to reach a rear stockroom corridor, or a carpark entry that doubles as a pedestrian access point. Rated IP67 and IK10 with TVS 2000V surge protection, this is a dome built for exposed positions where both weather and physical interference are realistic concerns. The 4MP 2560x1440 resolution gives useful detail over the zoom range, and 120dB wide dynamic range handles mixed lighting at entry points. A solid fit for commercial installers, facilities managers, and integrators specifying flexible single-camera positions.

What This Camera Actually Does

Motorised Autofocus Lens

The 2.8-12mm motorised lens adjusts zoom and focuses automatically via software or web browser - no manual adjustment at the camera head needed. Once mounted, you can change the framing remotely, which matters when a camera is ceiling-recessed or installed 6 metres up a wall.

120dB Wide Dynamic Range

120dB WDR balances bright exterior light against shadowed interior areas in the same frame. At a building entry or loading dock roller door, this means you can read a face or registration detail even when half the image is in direct sunlight and the other half is in shade.

IK10 Vandal-Resistant Housing

IK10 is the highest impact resistance rating for camera enclosures - confirmed here alongside IP67 weatherproofing. The metal and plastic construction is designed to withstand deliberate physical attack, making it appropriate for stairwells, car parks, and external building corners where tampering is a genuine risk.

30m IR Night Vision

850nm IR illuminators extend visibility to 30 metres in complete darkness. Combined with a 0.01 lux colour sensitivity rating and slow shutter support, the camera transitions smoothly between ambient-light colour and IR monochrome without manual switching.

H.265+ Compression with Edge Storage

H.265+ reduces bitrate significantly compared to standard H.264, cutting NVR storage demands and network load. The onboard microSD slot (up to 128GB) also supports ANR - so if the network drops, the camera buffers locally and syncs back to the NVR when connectivity is restored.

TVS 2000V Surge Protection

Built-in TVS 2000V lightning and surge protection guards the camera electronics against voltage spikes on the network cable - relevant for outdoor or semi-exposed installations in Queensland, Northern Territory, and other high-lightning regions where transient events on long cable runs are common.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial Installers: Specifying cameras at entries or intersections where the exact required framing won't be confirmed until after rough-in - the motorised autofocus lens lets them finalise the shot remotely without revisiting the install.
  • Facilities Managers: Managing multi-site retail or hospitality properties where outdoor-rated, vandal-resistant cameras are needed at carpark entries, stairwells, and service corridors with variable lighting conditions.
  • Security Integrators: Building mixed-environment systems where a single camera model needs to handle both indoor ceiling mount and exposed external soffit positions - IP67 and IK10 cover both use cases.
  • School and Childcare Facility Administrators: Specifying cameras at playground perimeters or covered walkways where IK10 resistance matters and the motorised lens allows precise framing of narrow entry corridors without disturbing ceiling surfaces post-installation.

Honest Assessment

The IPC-D640H-Z does the motorised varifocal job well within its category. The 2.8-12mm range covers wide lobby shots through to a narrower corridor or gate approach from the same mounting position, and the autofocus removes the single biggest frustration of manual varifocal domes - returning to site to sharpen the image after repositioning. IK10, IP67, and TVS surge protection make this a legitimate outdoor option, not just a rated-for-marketing claim. H.265+ and ANR edge buffering are practical inclusions for bandwidth-managed installations. Where this camera reaches its limits: it has no AI-based person or vehicle detection - it uses standard motion detection only. If perimeter intrusion analytics, line-crossing classification, or active deterrence (strobe/audio) are required, a Hikvision AcuSense or TiOC model would be more appropriate. The IR range of 30 metres also means it won't suit large open carparks or long-range approaches without supplementary lighting. Available through Security Australia.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: This camera draws up to 12W over PoE (802.3af, Class 3) when the motorised lens is actively adjusting. Confirm your switch or injector port is rated for Class 3 - budget 8-port switches sometimes derate individual ports under load. Also note the lens autofocus is triggered on zoom change; allow 5-10 seconds for focus to settle after each adjustment before evaluating image sharpness in the browser or VMS.

Mounting Note: The pan (0-355°), tilt (0-70°), and rotation (0-360°) adjustment ranges are for physical head positioning after mounting - this is not a PTZ camera and does not move remotely. Once the head is locked off, framing is fixed unless you physically reposition it. Plan your ceiling or soffit mount position accordingly before cabling.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need to cover a variable-depth space - such as an entry foyer that also includes a reception desk 12 metres back - and want to confirm the exact zoom setting after the camera is physically mounted rather than before.
  • Good match if: The installation is in an exposed or semi-exposed position where IP67 weatherproofing, IK10 impact resistance, and TVS 2000V surge protection are all required in a single dome unit.
  • You may need a different model if: Your brief includes AI-based intrusion detection, person/vehicle classification, or active deterrence - a TiOC or AcuSense turret camera from the Security Australia range would be better suited to those analytics requirements.

Real-World Scenarios

Retail Entry with Deep Floor Plan

A camera covering both the entry door and a service counter 10 metres back. The motorised lens is zoomed in remotely after mounting to frame the counter, with 120dB WDR handling the backlit entry without washing out the interior.

Exposed Carpark Stairwell

Mounted in an open-air stairwell subject to rain ingress, vibration from vehicle movement, and occasional deliberate interference. IP67 and IK10 ratings address weatherproofing and impact, while TVS 2000V protection guards against voltage spikes on the network cable run.

School Covered Walkway After Hours

Covering a long covered walkway with no ambient lighting at night. The 30m IR range and 0.01 lux sensitivity handle darkness, and a 128GB microSD card buffers overnight footage locally via ANR if the school's network is interrupted outside business hours.

Remote Site with Limited Bandwidth

On a rural or regional site with an LTE-connected NVR, H.265+ compression reduces the sustained bitrate significantly versus H.264 at the same resolution - cutting data costs while maintaining 4MP recording quality for incident review.

Post-Install Framing Adjustment

A client requests a tighter shot on a specific zone two weeks after installation. The installer logs into the camera web interface or VMS, adjusts the motorised zoom, and autofocus sharpens the image - no return visit to the mounting position required.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a motorised varifocal dome with confirmed IK10 and IP67 ratings in a single unit, where the ability to adjust framing remotely after installation is more important than AI analytics.
  • You may need a different model if: Your project requires smart motion detection with person/vehicle classification or active deterrence - a TiOC or AcuSense category dome camera would deliver those analytics capabilities.
  • Pairs well with: A HiLook or Hikvision PoE NVR with ONVIF Profile G support, enabling remote lens control, ANR synchronisation, and H.265+ storage optimisation from within the same VMS interface.

Common Questions

  1. Will this camera work with a standard PoE switch or injector?

Yes. The IPC-D640H-Z supports IEEE 802.3af PoE at Class 3, drawing a maximum of 12W. Most managed and unmanaged PoE switches rated for 802.3af per port will power it correctly. The one thing to verify is that your switch does not derate individual ports when multiple ports are under load simultaneously - cheaper 8-port switches sometimes do this, which can cause the camera to reboot during lens adjustments.
  2. Does this camera work with third-party NVRs, or is it locked to HiLook/Hikvision systems?

No, it is not locked to HiLook or Hikvision systems. The IPC-D640H-Z supports ONVIF Profile S and Profile G, which means it will integrate with any ONVIF-compliant NVR or VMS. Note that motorised lens control (zoom and focus via software) is typically available through HiLook/Hikvision-native clients (iVMS-4200, iVMS-5200) and may not be accessible through all third-party VMS platforms depending on their ONVIF implementation depth.
  3. How does the motorised zoom work - is this a PTZ camera?

No. This is not a PTZ camera and does not move remotely during live operation. The motorised lens adjusts zoom and focus via software at setup time - you log into the camera's web interface or a compatible VMS, use the zoom/focus controls to set the desired framing, and the lens motor holds that position. Pan, tilt, and rotation are physical bracket adjustments made by hand during installation, not remote-controlled movements. If you need continuous pan/tilt/zoom during live monitoring, a PTZ camera is required.
  4. What zoom ratio does the 2.8-12mm motorised lens provide, and how does this affect coverage distance?

The 2.8-12mm range gives an approximate 4.3x optical zoom ratio. At 2.8mm, the horizontal field of view is 98 degrees - suitable for wide-area coverage of an entry foyer or carpark lane. At 12mm, the horizontal field of view narrows to 28 degrees, concentrating the 4MP resolution onto a tighter target area such as a specific door, counter, or gate at greater distance. At 12mm the camera resolves detail at considerably longer range than at 2.8mm, making the motorised adjustment genuinely useful for matching focal length to the actual recognition distance required for each specific site.
  5. Does this camera have onboard storage, and what happens to recordings if the network goes down?

Yes. The IPC-D640H-Z has a built-in microSD/SDXC slot supporting cards up to 128GB. It also supports ANR (Automatic Network Replenishment) - when network connectivity is lost, the camera records locally to the SD card and automatically syncs the buffered footage back to the NVR once the connection is restored. This makes it suitable for sites with unreliable network infrastructure or long cable runs where occasional packet loss occurs.
  6. Is this camera suitable for outdoor installation in Australian conditions?

Yes. The IP67 rating confirms dust-tight and submersion-resistant sealing, which covers rain, hose-down cleaning, and coastal humidity. The operating temperature range of -30°C to 50°C covers Australian summers including roof-mounted positions in inland Queensland and Western Australia. TVS 2000V surge protection is relevant for outdoor cable runs in high-lightning areas. The IK10 rating also addresses physical interference at exposed positions. The unit is stocked by Security Australia and ships ready for direct outdoor mounting without additional enclosures.
  7. Will this camera perform at full 4MP resolution, or does the frame rate drop at maximum resolution?

At maximum 2560x1440 (4MP), the frame rate is 20fps on a 50Hz system. For smoother motion playback at full resolution, this is a known trade-off at this price point - 25fps is available by dropping to 2304x1296 or 1920x1080. For most commercial and retail applications where incident review is the primary use case, 20fps at full 4MP resolution is sufficient. If smooth 25fps motion at full resolution is a hard requirement, confirm NVR compatibility and consider whether the slightly lower resolution sub-stream meets your motion clarity needs.
