Product Overview

Model: IPC-B640H-Z

Who This Is For

For installers and property managers who need a single camera that can cover variable distances without committing to a fixed focal length at the time of installation. The HiLook IPC-B640H-Z pairs a 4MP sensor with a 2.8-12mm motorised varifocal lens, meaning the zoom angle can be adjusted remotely via software after the camera is mounted - no ladder required once it is on the bracket. That makes it well suited to driveways, car parks, loading areas, and building perimeters where the exact field of view is difficult to confirm until the camera is in position. With IP67 weatherproofing, TVS 2000V surge protection, and a -30 degrees C to 60 degrees C operating range, it handles Australian outdoor conditions across warehouse yards, rural properties, and coastal commercial sites. The 30m IR range and 120dB wide dynamic range add further flexibility for mixed lighting environments.

What This Camera Actually Does

Motorised Varifocal Zoom

The 2.8-12mm motorised lens adjusts focus and zoom angle remotely via the camera's web interface or VMS software. Once the camera is mounted, you can dial in the exact field of view from ground level - useful on high eaves, poles, or difficult roof mounts where re-positioning is impractical.

4MP Resolution at 2560x1440

The 1/3" progressive scan CMOS delivers 2560x1440 resolution, giving noticeably more detail than 1080p cameras - relevant when zoomed in to cover a longer approach or when reviewing footage to identify faces or number plates at distance.

120dB Wide Dynamic Range

120dB WDR handles high-contrast scenes where bright sunlight and deep shadow appear in the same frame - entry points facing the sun, boom gates backlit by sky, or covered loading bays with bright exterior areas visible at the same time.

30m IR Night Vision

850nm infrared LEDs provide up to 30m of night coverage in complete darkness. The IR cut filter switches automatically between day and night modes. Minimum illumination of 0.018 Lux at F1.6 means it retains detail in very low ambient light before the IR activates.

IP67 and TVS 2000V Protection

IP67 sealing keeps water and dust out of the housing in exposed outdoor positions. The TVS 2000V transient voltage suppression adds a layer of protection against lightning-induced surges on the cable run - relevant for exposed rural or rooftop installations.

H.265+ Compression with Edge Storage

H.265+ main stream compression reduces storage and bandwidth demand compared to standard H.264. A microSD slot supports up to 128GB for local edge recording, with ANR (automatic network replenishment) to backfill footage after network outages.

Who Buys This Model

  • Electrical and security installers: Working on commercial and industrial jobs where the exact field of view cannot be confirmed before the camera is on the wall - the motorised zoom allows on-site or remote fine-tuning after mounting without re-positioning the bracket.
  • Warehouse and logistics site managers: Covering loading docks, yard entries, and long driveway approaches where the adjustable 2.8-12mm range allows tighter framing at distance rather than a wide fixed angle that loses detail.
  • Rural and semi-rural property owners: Needing a camera that operates in -30 degrees C to 60 degrees C conditions with surge protection, for gate entries, sheds, and machinery storage areas that are exposed to weather and electrical storms.
  • Retail and commercial property owners upgrading from 1080p: Who want 4MP detail on a single approach camera without stepping up to a full PTZ, and need ONVIF compatibility to integrate with an existing NVR platform.

Honest Assessment

The IPC-B640H-Z does two things well: it gives installers genuine post-mount flexibility through its motorised varifocal lens, and it pairs that with a 4MP sensor and 120dB WDR that holds up in demanding outdoor lighting. The metal housing, IP67 rating, and TVS 2000V surge protection mean it is a legitimate outdoor option, not just a spec-sheet claim. H.265+ compression keeps storage requirements manageable at 4MP, and ONVIF Profile S and G compatibility means it will integrate with most NVR platforms already in the field. Where it has limits: the 30m IR range is moderate - longer approaches will need supplementary lighting or a different model. It has no built-in speaker or microphone, so two-way audio is not available. It also does not carry AI classification such as human and vehicle detection. Buyers needing active deterrence, longer IR, or smart event filtering should review other models available through Security Australia before deciding.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: The -Z variant uses motorised autofocus - after adjusting zoom remotely, trigger a one-touch focus from the web interface or VMS to lock the image sharp at the new focal length. If you are powering via PoE, confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3af Class 3 and can deliver up to 12.9W on this port - some budget switches throttle Class 3 ports under load. The BNC analogue output is a local monitoring convenience port, not a full analogue output for recorder connection; your primary connection is the RJ45 network port.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are mounting on a high wall, eave, or pole where re-positioning after cabling is difficult - the motorised 2.8-12mm lens lets you set the exact zoom and focus from software once the bracket is fixed.
  • Good match if: Your installation involves backlit entry points or bright outdoor areas alongside shadowed zones - the confirmed 120dB WDR will retain detail across both in the same frame.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires approaches longer than 30m covered in darkness, active deterrence with strobe or audio, or AI-based human and vehicle classification for smart event filtering - a higher-specification bullet or turret camera with extended IR and onboard analytics would be more suitable.

Real-World Scenarios

High Pole Mount - Car Park Entry

Mounted on a 5m pole at a car park boom gate, the motorised lens is zoomed in from the access point software after cabling - no scissor lift needed for re-positioning. The 120dB WDR manages the bright sky visible above the boom gate in daytime footage.

Warehouse Loading Dock

Installed under a roofline covering a 20m loading bay approach. The lens is dialled to 8mm to capture the full bay width at useful detail levels. The 30m IR provides overnight coverage of the dock area without external lighting, and the IP67 housing handles rain and wash-down spray.

Rural Property Gate Entry

Mounted on a fence post at a rural property driveway gate in a region with electrical storms. TVS 2000V surge protection reduces the risk of camera loss during lightning events on exposed cable runs. The -30 degrees C operating floor covers cold inland nights without performance loss.

Retail Rear Carpark with Existing NVR

Added to an existing ONVIF-compatible NVR system covering a retail rear carpark. ONVIF Profile S compatibility allows the camera to integrate with the existing recorder without manufacturer lock-in. A 128GB microSD card adds local edge redundancy in case of network interruption.

Apartment Complex Perimeter

Deployed along a perimeter fence line of a residential complex. The PoE 802.3af power delivery simplifies cable runs back to a central switch. H.265+ compression keeps bandwidth and NVR storage demand manageable across multiple cameras on the same NVR system.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a fixed-position outdoor bullet camera where the field of view cannot be confirmed before mounting, and the motorised 2.8-12mm lens gives you remote zoom and autofocus adjustment after installation without mechanical re-positioning.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires approaches longer than 30m covered in complete darkness, AI-based human and vehicle classification, active deterrence via strobe or siren, or continuous pan and tilt tracking - a higher-specification bullet with extended IR, a TiOC model, or a PTZ camera would serve those requirements better.
  • Pairs well with: An ONVIF-compatible NVR with PoE ports - the camera's 802.3af PoE and ONVIF Profile S and G support make it straightforward to add to an existing PoE NVR system without additional power cabling.

Common Questions

  1. Does the motorised lens on the IPC-B640H-Z actually adjust remotely after mounting, or do I need to physically set the zoom on the camera?

Yes - the -Z variant adjusts zoom and triggers autofocus entirely via software after the camera is mounted. Using the camera's web interface or a compatible VMS, you can change the focal length anywhere in the 2.8-12mm range and then initiate a one-touch autofocus to lock sharpness at the new zoom position. This is the key practical difference between the -Z (motorised autofocus) and -V (manual focus) variants of this model.
  2. What field of view does the IPC-B640H-Z cover at wide and at full zoom?

At the widest setting (2.8mm), the horizontal field of view is 98 degrees - comparable to a wide-angle fixed lens. At full zoom (12mm), the horizontal field of view narrows to 28 degrees, which is suitable for covering a longer driveway or approach at useful subject size. The diagonal FOV spans 115 degrees wide to 32 degrees tele, giving approximately a 4.3x optical zoom ratio across the full range.
  3. Will this camera work with my existing NVR if it is not a HiLook or Hikvision recorder?

Yes, provided your NVR supports ONVIF Profile S. The IPC-B640H-Z is confirmed ONVIF Profile S and Profile G compliant, which allows it to stream video to any ONVIF-compatible recorder from other manufacturers. Profile G also supports remote playback of recordings stored on the camera's microSD card from an ONVIF Profile G NVR. If your recorder uses a proprietary protocol only, integration may be limited to basic video stream without full event or recording management.
  4. Does the IPC-B640H-Z support PoE, and what class of PoE does it require?

Yes. The IPC-B640H-Z supports IEEE 802.3af PoE at Class 3, drawing up to 12.9W on the PoE port. A standard 802.3af PoE switch or injector with a Class 3 port will power this camera over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable run up to 100m. It also accepts 12VDC via a 5.5mm coaxial power plug if PoE is not available. Note that because the -Z motorised variant draws more power than the -V manual variant, confirm your switch port budget covers the 12.9W maximum before deployment.
  5. What does the 120dB Wide Dynamic Range actually mean in practice for an outdoor installation?

It means the camera can retain usable detail in both bright and dark areas of the same frame simultaneously. In practical terms: a camera mounted at a covered entry facing an open, sunlit area will not blow out the bright exterior or crush the shaded foreground - both regions remain visible in the same recorded image. 120dB is a confirmed specification for this model, representing a meaningful improvement over cameras rated at 100-110dB in high-contrast conditions.
  6. Can the IPC-B640H-Z record locally without an NVR?

Yes. The camera supports a microSD card up to 128GB for local edge recording, and also supports NAS recording via NFS or SMB/CIFS network shares. ANR (automatic network replenishment) is also supported, which means if the NVR connection drops, the camera continues recording to the microSD card and then automatically backfills the NVR once the network connection is restored. This makes the local storage slot a useful backup rather than just a standalone option, and is particularly relevant for the rural and remote installs this camera suits. The IPC-B640H-Z is stocked by Security Australia as part of the HiLook IP camera range.
  7. Does this camera have built-in AI detection for people or vehicles?

No. The IPC-B640H-Z does not include AI-based human and vehicle classification. The smart feature set confirmed in the specifications is limited to region of interest encoding (1 fixed region on main stream) and standard motion detection with alarm triggers including video tampering and network disconnection alerts. Buyers needing AI event filtering to reduce false motion alerts from trees, animals, or lighting changes should look at a higher-specification model with confirmed AcuSense or equivalent AI classification.
