Product Overview

Model: HIK-HV1140D8MPIR

Who This Is For

For integrators and technical installers who need precise optical control on CS-mount Hikvision cameras deployed across varied or demanding environments. The HIK-HV1140D8MPIR is an 8MP motorized varifocal lens with an 11-40mm focal range and a wide F1.5 aperture - a combination suited to installations where the camera position is fixed but the field of view needs to be dialled in on-site, or where lighting conditions fluctuate significantly throughout the day or night. The 11-40mm range gives genuine flexibility: wide enough to cover a car park entrance, long enough to reach across a loading bay or corridor approach. The F1.5 aperture supports low-light capture without requiring high IR output from the camera body. This lens is a component-level purchase and assumes the buyer already has a compatible 8MP Hikvision body with a CS mount - it is not a complete camera solution.

What This Lens Actually Does

Motorized Varifocal Zoom

The 11-40mm focal range is adjusted via motorized control rather than a manual ring, meaning you can set and fine-tune the field of view from the camera's software interface without physically repositioning the lens or climbing back to the mounting point.

F1.5 Large Aperture

F1.5 is a wide aperture for a zoom lens. It allows more light to reach the sensor in low-light or transitional lighting conditions - dusk, dawn, underlit car parks - reducing reliance on IR illumination and supporting cleaner image output at night.

8MP Optical Compatibility

This lens is designed to resolve detail at up to 8MP on a 1/1.8" sensor format. Pairing it with a lower-resolution body wastes the optics; pairing with a matched 8MP body ensures the glass doesn't limit image sharpness at any zoom position.

Auto Iris Control

The auto iris automatically adjusts aperture in response to changing light levels. In outdoor or mixed-lighting environments this helps maintain consistent exposure without manual intervention - important for cameras covering areas that shift from bright daylight to low-light night conditions.

IR Support

The lens is specified with IR illumination support, meaning it is designed to minimise focus shift when the camera body switches between day and IR night modes. Without this, some lenses produce a soft or defocused image under IR illumination.

Operating Temperature Range

Rated to operate from -20 °C to +60 °C. This covers the full range of Australian climate conditions including sub-zero alpine winters and extreme summer heat in northern and inland regions, without optical or mechanical degradation.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security integrators upgrading existing camera bodies: Technicians replacing worn or mismatched optics on installed Hikvision CS-mount camera housings, where the body is serviceable but the original lens no longer resolves adequately for an 8MP sensor upgrade.
  • Installers working high-ceiling or hard-to-reach mounting positions: The motorized zoom means focal length can be adjusted via software after installation - no need to re-access a ceiling mount or roof bracket every time a scene change is needed.
  • Operators monitoring low-light outdoor areas: Facilities managers or integrators covering car parks, perimeter fencing, or loading docks where the F1.5 aperture and auto iris support night-time image quality without relying entirely on supplementary IR lighting.
  • Technical buyers specifying custom camera builds: Installers assembling box-camera configurations from separate body and lens components, where sensor format compatibility (1/1.8") and CS mount are required constraints in the specification.

Honest Assessment

The HIK-HV1140D8MPIR does what a well-specified motorized varifocal lens should: it gives the installer genuine on-site flexibility across an 11-40mm range, holds focus under IR illumination, and supports 8MP resolution on a 1/1.8" sensor without the glass becoming the bottleneck. The F1.5 aperture is a genuine advantage in low-light outdoor scenarios where most varifocal lenses sit at F1.6 or narrower. The motorized drive makes post-install adjustments practical without scaffold or ladder work every time a field-of-view change is needed.

This lens will not work with C-mount bodies without an adapter, and it is not a fit for sensors larger than 1/1.8". It does not include a camera body and is only relevant to buyers already working with a compatible Hikvision platform. If a complete camera unit is what you need, Security Australia stocks integrated varifocal motorized zoom cameras that ship ready to install.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: Confirm your camera body uses a CS mount, not a C mount - C-mount bodies have a longer flange distance and require an adapter ring that is not included. Also verify your camera body's sensor is 1/1.8" or smaller; using this lens on a larger sensor (such as 1/1.2") will result in image circle vignetting at wider focal lengths. The motorized zoom requires the camera body to support motorized lens control via its interface - check your specific Hikvision body's compatibility before ordering.

Weight and Housing Note: At approximately 500 g and 120 mm in length, this lens adds meaningful mass to a camera body. Ensure the camera housing and mounting bracket are rated to support the combined weight, particularly on ceiling-mounted or wall-arm installations where vibration or wind load may apply.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You have a Hikvision CS-mount box camera body with a 1/1.8" or smaller 8MP sensor and need a motorized varifocal lens that can be adjusted remotely without revisiting the mounting position.
  • Good match if: Your installation covers an area with variable lighting throughout the day - the F1.5 aperture combined with auto iris handles the transition between bright daylight and low-light night conditions without manual adjustment.
  • You may need a different model if: You are looking for a complete, ready-to-install camera unit - an integrated motorized varifocal camera with body, lens, and housing combined will be a more practical choice for most standard surveillance deployments.

Real-World Scenarios

High-Ceiling Industrial Bay

Mounted on a Hikvision box camera body at 8m height in a warehouse, the motorized zoom allows the focal length to be adjusted from 11mm to 40mm via software - covering either the full bay width or zooming to a specific aisle or dock door without a return site visit.

Car Park Perimeter at Night

In an underlit car park where supplementary IR lighting is limited, the F1.5 aperture and auto iris allow the camera body to capture usable night-time footage at longer focal lengths without the image degradation common on narrower-aperture varifocal lenses.

Lens Replacement on Existing Body

A site upgrades its camera bodies from 4MP to 8MP sensors while retaining the existing housing and cabling. The HIK-HV1140D8MPIR replaces the old optics to match the new sensor resolution, eliminating the lens as the image quality bottleneck without replacing the entire installation.

Outdoor Perimeter in Extreme Climate

Deployed on a box camera in a northern Australian industrial site where ambient temperatures regularly exceed 50 °C in direct sun, the lens operates within its rated +60 °C upper limit and the IP67 rating prevents dust ingress in the dry, high-particulate environment.

Custom Camera Build for Critical Infrastructure

A government or utility site specifying bespoke camera assemblies with matched body and lens components selects this lens for its confirmed 8MP resolution support and CS mount compatibility, assembling a camera unit with precisely controlled optical specifications.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a motorized varifocal lens with an F1.5 aperture on a CS-mount Hikvision body where the 11-40mm range and remote zoom adjustment are specific requirements - particularly in low-light or hard-to-access installations.
  • You may need a different model if: You require a complete surveillance solution ready to install - an integrated motorized varifocal camera with body, lens, housing, and IR illuminator combined will be faster to deploy and removes compatibility variables entirely.
  • Pairs well with: A compatible Hikvision CS-mount 8MP box camera body with motorized lens control support, housed in an appropriate outdoor enclosure rated for the installation environment.

Common Questions

  1. Does this lens work with any CS-mount camera, or only Hikvision bodies?

It is designed and specified for use with Hikvision CS-mount network cameras. The CS mount is a standard physical interface, so the lens will physically attach to other CS-mount bodies, but motorized zoom and auto iris control depend on the camera body's interface supporting those functions. Hikvision specifies this lens for use within their own platform to ensure full motorized control compatibility.
  2. Will this lens work with a 4MP or 5MP camera body, or does it require 8MP?

It will physically function on lower-resolution bodies, but the optics are engineered to resolve at 8MP on a 1/1.8" sensor. Using it with a lower-resolution body means you are not gaining any optical benefit beyond what a less specified lens would deliver. The lens is best matched to an 8MP body to justify the optical specification.
  3. Does this lens maintain focus when the camera switches to IR night mode?

Yes. The HIK-HV1140D8MPIR is specified with IR illumination support, which means it is designed to minimise focus shift at the point where the camera body switches between visible light and IR night modes. Standard lenses without this designation can produce softening or defocus under IR illumination due to the difference in focal point between visible and infrared wavelengths.
  4. How is the motorized zoom controlled - does it need special software?

Motorized zoom adjustment is controlled through the compatible Hikvision camera body's interface, typically via the camera's web browser interface, Hik-Connect, or iVMS-4200 software. There is no separate controller required for the lens itself. The camera body must support motorized lens control - confirm this in your specific body's documentation before purchasing, as not all Hikvision box camera bodies activate motorized lens functions.
  5. What does the F1.5 aperture actually mean for night-time image quality?

F1.5 means this lens allows significantly more light to reach the sensor than lenses rated at F1.8 or F2.0. In practical terms, the camera body can maintain a cleaner image at night with less reliance on IR illumination. The difference is most noticeable in transitional lighting conditions - dusk, dawn, and underlit outdoor areas - where a narrower aperture lens would force the sensor to compensate with gain, increasing noise in the image.
  6. Is this lens available through Security Australia as part of a complete camera package, or only as a standalone item?

The HIK-HV1140D8MPIR is stocked by Security Australia as a standalone lens component. If you need a complete camera solution including body and housing, the Security Australia range includes integrated Hikvision motorized varifocal cameras that ship as a complete unit - these may be a more practical option for standard installations where individual component selection is not a requirement.
  7. Will this lens handle outdoor conditions in Australian environments?

Yes, within specified limits. The lens is IP67-rated, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and temporary water immersion - suitable for outdoor mounting in rain and dusty conditions. The operating temperature range of -20 °C to +60 °C covers the full range of Australian climate conditions. Note that IP67 refers to the lens itself; the camera body and housing it is installed in must also be appropriately rated for the installation environment.
