Product Overview

Model: HIK-2XE6222FIS8

Who This Is For

For project engineers and industrial installers who need certified video surveillance in environments where conventional cameras cannot legally or safely operate, the Hikvision HIK-2XE6222FIS8 is purpose-built for exactly that brief. This is a 2MP explosion-proof bullet camera housed in 304 and 316L stainless steel, rated IP68 for total dust and water exclusion, and certified under both ATEX and IECEx schemes - the two globally recognised standards that determine whether a device is safe to operate in areas with combustible gases, vapours, or dust. The 8mm fixed lens suits defined corridors, process lines, and access points where the field of view is known in advance. With 30m IR range and Hikvision DarkFighter low-light imaging, it maintains usable footage through the dark, unlit conditions common in tanks, tunnels, and night-shift industrial facilities. If the installation zone carries an explosion risk classification, this camera is built to meet it.

What This Camera Actually Does

ATEX and IECEx Certification

Certified under both the European ATEX directive and the international IECEx scheme, this camera is legally recognised as safe for use in classified hazardous zones - including areas with flammable gases, vapours, mists, and combustible dust. These certifications are typically mandatory for oil, gas, and chemical installations.

316L Stainless Steel Housing

The enclosure uses both 304 and 316L stainless steel grades. Grade 316L provides superior resistance to chloride corrosion and chemical exposure, making it suitable for marine environments, chemical processing plants, and coastal industrial sites where standard aluminium housings degrade rapidly.

IP68 Ingress Protection

Rated IP68, this camera is fully sealed against dust ingress and rated for continuous submersion beyond 1 metre. In practical terms, it withstands high-pressure washdowns, flooding events, and the sustained moisture exposure found in marine hulls, mine shafts, and below-deck installations.

DarkFighter Low-Light Imaging

Hikvision's DarkFighter sensor technology is designed for ultra-low-light conditions, capturing usable colour detail at light levels where standard cameras produce grainy, unusable footage. Combined with 30m IR illumination, it operates effectively in unlit storage areas, tunnels, and night-shift industrial zones.

120dB Wide Dynamic Range

At 120dB, the WDR system handles extreme contrast between bright process lighting and deep shadow within the same frame. This is relevant where overhead work lights illuminate only part of a scene, or where an entry point transitions between a bright exterior and a dark interior space.

Who Buys This Model

  • Oil and Gas Facility Operators: Refineries, LNG terminals, and gas processing plants require ATEX and IECEx certified equipment in classified hazardous zones - this camera meets both schemes and is specified on that basis.
  • Chemical Plant Engineers: Process areas handling volatile or corrosive compounds need a camera enclosure that resists chemical attack. The 316L stainless steel construction is selected specifically for this type of exposure.
  • Marine and Offshore Vessel Operators: Below-deck engine rooms, pump rooms, and tank spaces combine explosive atmosphere risk with sustained saltwater exposure. IP68 and 316L stainless steel together address both hazards.
  • Underground Mining Operations: Deep mines with methane or combustible dust present require zone-rated cameras. The IECEx certification is widely accepted across Australian mining compliance frameworks.

Honest Assessment

The HIK-2XE6222FIS8 does something almost no other camera in the Hikvision range does - it carries dual ATEX and IECEx explosion-proof certification in a 316L stainless steel enclosure rated IP68. For the specific applications it targets, that combination is not optional: it is a compliance requirement. The DarkFighter sensor and 120dB WDR add genuine imaging capability rather than treating hazardous-zone compliance as a trade-off against image quality. H.265 encoding keeps storage bandwidth manageable across multi-camera industrial deployments. Available through Security Australia, this camera is a considered choice for any installer specifying into classified hazardous zones. Where it will not serve you: if your site does not carry an explosion risk classification, you are paying a significant premium for certifications you do not need. Standard IP67 or IP66 industrial bullet cameras will deliver comparable or higher resolution at a fraction of the cost. The 8mm fixed lens also means this camera suits defined, predictable coverage zones - it is not the right choice where flexible or wide-angle coverage is required.

Before You Buy

Zone Classification First: Before specifying this camera, confirm the hazardous area zone classification for the installation point (Zone 0/1/2 for gas, Zone 20/21/22 for dust under ATEX, or equivalent IECEx groupings). The camera's certification must match the zone designation documented in the site's hazardous area register. Installing an incorrectly rated device in a higher-risk zone is a compliance failure regardless of the camera's general explosion-proof construction.

Cable Entry and Gland Selection: The IP68 rating of the camera enclosure is only maintained when the cable entry gland is also correctly rated and installed to the same standard. In hazardous areas, the cable gland must itself carry appropriate ATEX or IECEx certification. A standard IP68 gland is not sufficient. Confirm gland selection with a certified hazardous area electrician before installation.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: Your installation point falls within a classified hazardous area zone and requires ATEX and IECEx certified equipment - this camera carries both certifications and is built to that compliance requirement.
  • Good match if: The site environment involves saltwater exposure, chemical splash, or sustained submersion risk - the 316L stainless steel housing and IP68 rating are purpose-matched to those conditions.
  • You may need a different model if: The installation site does not carry an explosion risk classification - a standard industrial-grade IP67 bullet or turret camera will deliver better resolution and more lens options at considerably lower cost. Real-World Scenarios

LNG Terminal Process Area

A liquefied natural gas terminal installs this camera at a compressor station entry point. The ATEX and IECEx certifications satisfy the site's hazardous area register requirements, and the 8mm lens covers the defined approach corridor to the compressor bay.

Offshore Vessel Pump Room

Below-deck pump rooms on oil tankers combine explosion risk with sustained saltwater humidity. The 316L stainless steel housing resists chloride corrosion, and IP68 handles condensation and occasional flooding without seal failure over the vessel's operational life.

Underground Coal Mine Tunnel

A mine operator installs this camera in a methane-classified tunnel section. The IECEx certification is accepted under Australian mining compliance requirements, and the 30m IR range and DarkFighter sensor deliver usable footage in the tunnel's near-total darkness without additional lighting.

Chemical Storage Facility

A chemical distributor monitors a solvent storage bay where vapour accumulation creates an ongoing explosion risk. The 120dB WDR manages the contrast between bright overhead safety lighting and shadowed drum storage areas, maintaining readable footage for incident review.

Oil Refinery Perimeter Access Point

A refinery security team deploys this camera at a classified-zone gate used by maintenance contractors. The fixed 8mm lens covers the access point and pedestrian lane, H.265 encoding reduces storage load across the multi-camera system, and DarkFighter maintains identification capability during night shifts.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your installation point sits within a formally classified hazardous area zone requiring ATEX and IECEx certified equipment, particularly where corrosive or marine exposure adds a second environmental challenge the 316L stainless housing addresses directly.
  • You may need a different model if: The site does not carry an explosion risk zone classification - a standard industrial bullet or turret camera rated IP67 will provide equivalent or higher resolution imaging at significantly lower cost. The full industrial camera range is at securityaustralia.com.au.
  • Pairs well with: An industrial-grade NVR with H.265 decoding support and sufficient channel count for the full hazardous area camera layout.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera actually have ATEX certification, or is it just marketed as explosion-proof?

Yes, it carries certification under both the ATEX directive and the IECEx scheme. These are the two primary internationally recognised certification systems for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. ATEX is the European framework; IECEx is the broader international scheme accepted in Australia, the Middle East, and most major industrial markets. Both require independent third-party testing - they are not self-declared ratings.
  2. Will this camera work in a mine classified under Australian hazardous area standards?

Yes, for sites where IECEx is the accepted certification scheme. IECEx is widely recognised within Australian mining compliance frameworks, particularly for underground operations with methane or combustible dust classifications. You should confirm the specific zone grouping and equipment category requirements with your site's hazardous area engineer before finalising the specification.
  3. What does the 316L stainless steel housing actually add over a standard housing?

Significantly better resistance to chloride-induced corrosion. Standard camera enclosures use aluminium or ABS plastic, which corrode or degrade quickly in saltwater, chemical splash, or marine environments. Grade 316L stainless steel contains molybdenum, which makes it resistant to pitting from chlorides - the primary failure mechanism in coastal and marine industrial applications. It also handles the surface cleaning regimes used in food-grade and chemical facilities without surface degradation.
  4. Does the IP68 rating cover high-pressure washdowns?

IP68 confirms protection against continuous submersion but does not specifically rate for high-pressure jet washing. IP69K is the rating that covers high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. For sites where regular pressure washdowns are part of the cleaning regime - such as food processing or certain chemical plants - confirm whether the washdown pressure and temperature fall within the camera's tested parameters by reviewing the specification sheet.
  5. Is the 8mm lens the right choice for my application?

It depends on the distance to the subject and the required field of view. An 8mm lens on a 2MP sensor produces a narrower field of view suited to defined corridors, access gates, and process lines where you know the coverage zone in advance. If you need a wider view of an open area or process floor, a shorter focal length lens would be more appropriate. Check whether other focal lengths are available in the HIK-2XE6222FIS series before committing to this variant.
  6. What NVR or recording system does this camera connect to?

This camera uses H.265 compression and connects to any NVR or VMS that supports Hikvision's protocol and H.265 decoding. For hazardous area deployments, the recording equipment is typically located in a safe area outside the classified zone and connected via approved conduit or cable entry systems. Confirm that the NVR has sufficient channel capacity and storage for the retention period required by the site's security plan. The team at Security Australia can assist with matching recorder specifications to this camera's output.
