Product Overview

Model: DS-KH8520-WTE1

Who This Is For

For facilities managers, integrators, and residential developers who need a capable indoor room station with a large touch display and flexible network connectivity. The Hikvision DS-KH8520-WTE1 suits apartments, offices, schools, and aged-care facilities where residents or staff need to answer door calls, view linked cameras, and remotely release door locks from a fixed wall-mounted terminal. The 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen makes operation straightforward for all users, while Wi-Fi support alongside wired PoE gives installers options when a data cable to the exact wall position is impractical. The 8-channel alarm input capacity and dual relay outputs also make this station relevant to integrators building out more complex access control and intercom solutions rather than a simple door-answer point.

What This Station Actually Does

10.1-Inch Touch Display

The 1024 x 600 capacitive TFT LCD gives a clear, responsive viewing surface for incoming door calls, live camera feeds, and menu navigation. At 254 x 166 x 14.7 mm the unit sits flush and slim against a wall without the bulk of older intercom panels.

Two-Way Audio with Noise Suppression

A built-in omnidirectional microphone and built-in loudspeaker handle full duplex communication. G.711 U audio compression with active noise suppression and echo cancellation keeps conversations intelligible even in busy or reverberant indoor environments.

Wired PoE and Wi-Fi Connectivity

IEEE 802.3af PoE lets a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carry both power and data to the station. Where cable routing is difficult, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n provides an alternative. A 12 VDC/1A input is available if PoE infrastructure is not in place, and total power draw is rated at 6W or less.

Remote Unlock and Mobile App Access

Door release can be triggered directly from the touch screen, via the Hik-Connect mobile app, or through the Hikvision client software. This lets building occupants answer and release a visitor remotely when they are away from the station, without needing a separate video doorbell device.

8-Channel Alarm Inputs and Dual Relay Outputs

With 8 alarm input channels and 2 relay outputs, this station can integrate basic sensor zones and control 2 independent door locks or output devices. This is notably deeper I/O than entry-level indoor stations and suits installations requiring more than a single door point.

Local TF Card Storage

The station accepts a micro SD card up to 32GB (SD 2.0 or lower, sold separately) for storing captured visitor snapshots and messages locally. This provides a basic call history record even when no NVR or server is present on the network.

Who Buys This Model

  • Apartment Building Integrators: Installing a per-apartment indoor station that needs a large, easy-to-use display for residents of varying technical ability - the 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen with UI V2.0 reduces support calls.
  • Aged-Care and Healthcare Facilities: Where a large, clearly readable screen at the room entrance or nurse station makes it practical for staff and residents to identify and communicate with visitors before releasing a door.
  • Commercial Office Fit-Out Contractors: Specifying a room station that can control 2 door outputs and accept 8 alarm inputs, reducing the need for a separate controller in smaller zoned access deployments.
  • Installers Working in Retrofit Environments: Where running a new data cable to the exact mounting position is not feasible - Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n connectivity alongside PoE means the install can be completed without in-wall cabling work.

Honest Assessment

The DS-KH8520-WTE1 is a well-specified Gen2 indoor station for Hikvision video intercom systems. The 10.1-inch touch screen is genuinely larger than most competing indoor stations at this price point, and the combination of PoE, Wi-Fi, and 12 VDC power options gives installers real flexibility. The 8 alarm inputs and 2 relay outputs are a legitimate advantage for mixed access-and-intercom installations. Audio quality is aided by confirmed noise suppression and echo cancellation, which matters in open-plan or high-ambient-noise environments. What it will not do is function as a standalone unit - it requires a compatible Hikvision Gen2 door station and either a video intercom server or the Hik-Connect cloud platform to operate fully. The TF card slot accepts up to 32GB but the card is not included. It is not an outdoor-rated device. For installers and project managers comparing indoor station options, the DS-KH8520-WTE1 is available through Security Australia as part of the broader Hikvision Gen2 intercom range.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: The DS-KH8520-WTE1 runs on the Hikvision Gen2 video intercom platform - confirm your door station and any video intercom server (such as a DS-KIS702 or DS-KM8301 management centre) are also Gen2 compatible before ordering. Gen1 and Gen2 Hikvision intercom devices are not cross-compatible. If powering via PoE, your switch or injector must support IEEE 802.3af; the station draws 6W or less so standard 802.3af is sufficient without needing 802.3at (PoE+). The TF card slot takes SD 2.0 or lower specification - SD 3.0 (SDHC/SDXC) cards formatted beyond the SD 2.0 spec may not be recognised.

Mounting Note: At 14.7 mm deep the unit is designed to surface-mount or fit into a standard wall back-box. Confirm your back-box depth and cable entry point before installation - the slim profile leaves minimal depth for cable terminations behind the unit. The RJ-45 port and any alarm/relay wiring need to be managed within that space.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are building out a Hikvision Gen2 video intercom system and need an indoor station with a large touch screen, Wi-Fi fallback, and enough I/O (8 alarm inputs, 2 relays) to handle a more integrated installation.
  • Good match if: You are retrofitting an indoor station position where pulling a new Cat6 cable to the exact wall location is not practical - Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n connectivity means the station can operate wirelessly on the existing network.
  • You may need a different model if: Your project requires a compact or flush-in-wall indoor station with a smaller footprint - a 7-inch or smaller indoor station from the Hikvision Gen2 range will suit tighter wall positions better and may be available on the Security Australia site.

Real-World Scenarios

Apartment Complex - Per-Unit Station

Each apartment receives a DS-KH8520-WTE1 station powered via PoE from a floor switch. Residents use the 10.1-inch touch screen to view the lobby door station, speak with visitors, and release the entrance door without leaving the apartment.

Aged-Care Facility - Nurse Station Wall Point

Mounted at a nursing station, the large capacitive display lets staff clearly identify visitors at the secure entrance before triggering a relay output to release the door lock - no need to move to a separate access control panel.

Office Retrofit - Wi-Fi Installation

In a tenancy where cutting cable runs through finished walls is not practical, the station connects over Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. A nearby 12 VDC adaptor supplies power, allowing the station to be positioned at the required wall location without new in-wall cabling.

Remote Door Release via Mobile App

When a resident is away from the room station, an incoming call from the door station forwards to the Hik-Connect app. They answer, view the visitor on their phone, and release the door remotely - the indoor station acts as the registered device within the system.

Integrated Alarm and Intercom Point

Using the 8 alarm input channels and RS-485 port, an integrator connects PIR sensors and a door contact to the station for a consolidated entry-point solution - combining visitor communication, door release, and basic alarm monitoring at a single wall-mounted device.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need the largest standard indoor station display in the Hikvision Gen2 range combined with both PoE and Wi-Fi connectivity, and your installation requires more than a single door output - the 2 relay outputs and 8 alarm inputs set this apart from smaller indoor stations.
  • You may need a different model if: Your wall position or budget suits a smaller footprint - a 7-inch Gen2 indoor station will fit a tighter back-box and costs less while still supporting full video intercom functionality with the same door station and server platform.
  • Pairs well with: A Hikvision Gen2 IP door station (surface-mount or flush-mount), a Gen2 video intercom management centre or NVR with intercom capability, and a compatible PoE switch with IEEE 802.3af support.

Common Questions

  1. Does the DS-KH8520-WTE1 work with any video intercom door station?

No. This station is designed for the Hikvision Gen2 video intercom platform and must be paired with a compatible Gen2 door station. It will not register with Gen1 Hikvision intercom products or third-party SIP door stations in a managed Hikvision system configuration without specific SIP integration setup.
  2. Will this camera station work without a video intercom server or NVR?

Partially. The station can operate in a basic peer-to-peer or Hik-Connect cloud mode without a local server, supporting door calls and remote unlock via the mobile app. However, full multi-apartment management, call forwarding between rooms, and local event logging typically require a compatible Hikvision video intercom management centre or server in the same system.
  3. Does the DS-KH8520-WTE1 support two-way audio?

Yes. The station has both a built-in omnidirectional microphone and a built-in loudspeaker, confirming full duplex two-way audio. The audio path uses G.711 U compression at 64 Kbps with active noise suppression and echo cancellation, which reduces audio degradation in reverberant rooms or environments with background noise.
  4. What PoE standard does this station require?

IEEE 802.3af (standard PoE). The station draws 6W or less, which is well within the 15.4W budget of an 802.3af port. You do not need an 802.3at (PoE+) switch. A 12 VDC/1A power adaptor is also a valid alternative if your switch does not support PoE, and Wi-Fi can be used to handle the data path independently.
  5. Can I use any micro SD card in the TF card slot?

No. The TF card slot accepts micro SD cards to a maximum of 32GB and is compatible with SD 2.0 specification or lower only. Standard SDHC or SDXC cards formatted to SD 3.0 or higher spec may not be recognised. Use a confirmed SD 2.0 compatible card for message and snapshot storage. The card is not included with the station.
  6. How many doors or locks can this station control?

    2. The DS-KH8520-WTE1 has 2 relay outputs, meaning it can trigger up to 2 independent electric strikes, magnetic locks, or other output devices. This makes it suitable for installations where a single indoor station needs to manage both a main entry door and a secondary gate or car park barrier, for example.
  7. Can the station view cameras beyond the door station itself?

Yes. The DS-KH8520-WTE1 supports live video viewing of linked IP cameras through the Hikvision intercom platform, not only the paired door station. This allows a resident or staff member to check a courtyard camera or secondary entrance camera directly from the indoor station screen without switching to a separate NVR viewer or app. Configuration is managed through the Hikvision client software. This feature is confirmed by Security Australia as part of the Gen2 platform capability for this model.

Cabling Considerations

  • Cable Type: Cat5e or Cat6 UTP for wired PoE installations. Standard structured cabling terminating to an RJ-45 patch point or direct to a PoE switch port.
  • Max Cable Run: 100 m for standard Ethernet PoE runs. Runs beyond 80 m should be tested for signal integrity before finalising the installation.
  • PoE Notes: IEEE 802.3af only - no PoE+ required. Total draw is 6W or less. A mid-span PoE injector is a valid alternative to a PoE switch if only 1 or 2 stations are being installed.
  • Alarm and Relay Wiring: 8 alarm inputs and 2 relay outputs require separate low-voltage wiring runs to each sensor or lock. Plan cable pathways for these in parallel with the data cable before finalising the back-box position - the 14.7 mm depth behind the unit leaves limited space for multiple terminations.
  • Wi-Fi Option: If using Wi-Fi instead of wired PoE, the station still requires a 12 VDC/1A power supply via the DC input. Ensure the Wi-Fi access point covering the installation zone supports 802.11b/g/n (2.4 GHz) and has adequate signal at the mounting position before relying on wireless as the sole network path.
