Product Overview
Model: DS-7616NI-M2/16P
Who This Is For
When consolidating a full 16-camera IP system into a single, capable recorder is the priority, the Hikvision DS-7616NI-M2/16P is built for that brief. Installers specifying medium-to-large commercial sites - warehouses, multi-tenancy buildings, school campuses, or retail complexes - will find this Ultra Series NVR handles the channel count, bandwidth load, and display demands those environments generate. All 16 PoE ports are built in, removing the need for a separate PoE switch and keeping rack space tight. The included 4TB HDD gets the system recording on day one, with a second SATA bay free for immediate expansion. With 160 Mbps incoming bandwidth, H.265+ compression, and HDMI output supporting up to 8K-rated resolution, this NVR suits deployments where high-resolution cameras are already specified or planned. It is also the right fit for integrators who want ANR, TLS-encrypted streaming, and Hik-Connect remote access without sourcing a separate licensing tier.
What This NVR Actually Does
16-Port Built-In PoE
All 16 RJ-45 PoE ports are self-adaptive and built directly into the unit. Each camera connects with a single Cat5e or Cat6 run carrying both power and data, removing the need for a separate PoE switch and reducing the number of active network devices in the rack.
160 Mbps Bandwidth Headroom
Both incoming and outgoing bandwidth sit at 160 Mbps. That capacity supports high-resolution streams across all 16 channels simultaneously without throttling, making it viable for 4MP, 6MP, or 8MP camera mixes that would saturate a lower-tier NVR.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ reduces file sizes compared to standard H.264 without degrading recorded image quality. On a 16-channel system, that difference compounds quickly - stretching the 4TB HDD's retention window significantly before additional storage is needed.
ANR - Automatic Network Replenishment
If the network connection between a camera and the NVR drops, ANR keeps recording locally on the camera's SD card. Once connectivity is restored, footage recorded during the outage is automatically transferred back to the NVR, closing gaps in the recorded timeline.
TLS-Encrypted Streaming
Video transmission between cameras and the NVR can be secured via TLS encryption. For sites with compliance requirements - healthcare, finance, government facilities - this protects recorded footage from interception on the local network without requiring a separate encryption appliance.
Independent HDMI and VGA Outputs
HDMI and VGA outputs operate independently, allowing 2 monitors to run simultaneously - for example, a high-resolution HDMI display at a security desk alongside a legacy VGA monitor at a secondary station. HDMI supports up to 8K-rated output; VGA runs at up to 1920x1080 at 60Hz.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial Installers: Integrators fitting out warehouses, retail centres, or office buildings who need all 16 PoE ports built in and 160 Mbps bandwidth to run high-resolution cameras across every channel without an external switch.
- School and Campus Facilities Teams: Facilities managers specifying a centralised recorder for multi-building or multi-zone camera layouts where ANR protects against footage loss during any network disruption between buildings.
- Security Consultants on Compliance Sites: Consultants working on healthcare, finance, or government installations where TLS-encrypted video transmission and double-verification playback access are required by site security policy.
- System Upgrade Projects: IT or security teams replacing an ageing DVR or lower-tier NVR who want to retain existing Cat cabling while stepping up to full IP resolution and H.265+ storage efficiency on a 16-channel backbone.
Honest Assessment
The DS-7616NI-M2/16P handles the core demands of a 16-channel high-resolution IP system well. The built-in PoE ports, 160 Mbps bandwidth ceiling, and H.265+ compression make it a practical choice for commercial sites where camera counts are fixed at 16 and resolution requirements are high. ANR and TLS encryption lift it above entry-level NVRs for installers who need documented network security and recording continuity. The 4TB HDD included through Security Australia means the unit is ready to record immediately without a separate drive order.
Where this NVR has limits: 2 SATA bays cap raw storage expansion at a maximum of 2 drives, which may fall short on very high-resolution, long-retention sites. It does not expand beyond 16 channels natively, so sites likely to grow past that count should be specced on a higher-channel platform from the outset. Third-party IP camera compatibility is also narrower than open-ONVIF recorders - it is optimised for Hikvision cameras and best deployed within that ecosystem.
Before You Buy
Storage Planning: This unit ships with a 4TB HDD installed and one empty SATA bay. Maximum raw storage is 2 drives (up to 6TB per drive = 12TB total). Before commissioning, calculate your retention requirement against channel count, resolution, and recording mode - continuous recording across 16 channels at high resolution will fill 4TB faster than motion-triggered or H.265+ optimised streams. If your site requires more than 12TB, plan for a separate NAS or RAID-capable recorder rather than expecting further internal expansion.
ANR Requires Camera-Side SD Cards: ANR functionality depends on the connected IP cameras having SD cards installed. The NVR enables the feature at the system level, but if cameras are not fitted with SD cards, footage recorded during a network outage will be lost regardless of NVR settings. Confirm SD card support on your camera models before relying on ANR as a continuity measure in your design.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying exactly 16 Hikvision IP cameras and want built-in PoE on every port without budgeting for a separate managed PoE switch - all 16 self-adaptive RJ-45 ports are on-board.
- Good match if: Your site operates on a network with compliance requirements and needs TLS-encrypted video transmission and double-verification playback access as standard, not as an add-on.
- You may need a different model if: Your camera count is likely to exceed 16, or your retention requirements demand more than 2 internal drives - a 32-channel or higher-bay NVR from the Hikvision range available on securityaustralia.com.au would be a better starting point for that brief.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need all 16 PoE ports on-board, 160 Mbps bandwidth for high-resolution camera mixes, and network security features like TLS encryption and ANR in a single rackmount unit without sourcing additional switching hardware.
- You may need a different model if: Your site will grow beyond 16 cameras or requires more than 2 internal drives for long-term retention - a 32-channel or higher-bay NVR would be the more appropriate platform for that brief.
- Pairs well with: Hikvision 4MP, 6MP, or 8MP PoE IP dome, turret, or bullet cameras - particularly models with SD card slots to take full advantage of the ANR functionality built into this NVR.
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR need a separate PoE switch to power the cameras?
No. All 16 PoE ports are built directly into the DS-7616NI-M2/16P. Each port is self-adaptive, meaning a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable from each camera carries both data and power back to the NVR. There is no requirement for a separate managed or unmanaged PoE switch in the installation. -
How much storage does this NVR support in total?
Up to 12TB across 2 internal drives. The unit ships with a 4TB HDD already installed, leaving one SATA bay free. Each bay supports drives up to 6TB, bringing maximum internal raw storage to 12TB. There is no NAS or eSATA expansion port on this model, so sites requiring greater retention capacity should plan for a higher-bay NVR. -
Will this NVR work with non-Hikvision cameras?
Partially, but with limitations. The DS-7616NI-M2/16P is optimised for Hikvision IP cameras and supports the full feature set - including ANR, TLS encryption, and H.265+ - only with Hikvision-native cameras. Third-party ONVIF cameras may connect for basic streaming and recording, but advanced features are not guaranteed to function and are not supported by Hikvision for mixed-brand configurations. -
Does ANR work automatically, or does it need to be configured?
ANR requires initial configuration on both the NVR and each camera. The feature must be enabled per channel in the NVR settings, and each connected camera must have a formatted SD card installed. Once configured, the system handles replenishment automatically - footage recorded on the camera's SD card during any network outage is pulled back to the NVR without manual intervention once the connection restores. -
Can multiple users access live and recorded footage at the same time?
Yes. The DS-7616NI-M2/16P supports up to 128 simultaneous remote connections via Hik-Connect or DDNS. This makes it suitable for monitoring centres, multi-user business environments, or sites where a property owner and a third-party monitoring company both require concurrent remote access. User permissions and access levels are configurable per account. The unit is stocked by Security Australia ready to connect to the Hik-Connect platform. -
What does TLS encryption actually protect on this NVR?
TLS (Transport Layer Security) encrypts the video stream between each IP camera and the NVR as it travels across the local network. Without it, video data on the network is readable to anyone with access to that network segment. With TLS enabled, the stream is encrypted in transit, which is relevant for sites where video data is classified, where the network is shared with other systems, or where a compliance framework requires encrypted transmission of surveillance footage. -
Will this NVR fit in a standard rack cabinet?
Yes. At 445 x 400 x 71 mm and approximately 5kg without the HDD, the DS-7616NI-M2/16P is dimensioned for standard 19-inch rackmount installation. The 71mm height corresponds to a 2U rack profile. Confirm your rack's depth is sufficient for the 400mm unit depth plus cable management clearance at the rear before installation.
