Product Overview
Model: DS-7608NI-M2/8P-6TB
Who This Is For
When managing bandwidth across a full 8-camera IP system is the priority, the Hikvision DS-7608NI-M2/8P is the recorder to plan around. Installers specifying systems for small commercial sites, warehouses, medical practices, or multi-tenancy buildings will find the 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth, 8 built-in PoE ports, and dual HDD bays give them the headroom to run high-resolution cameras without a separate PoE switch. The included 6TB hard drive means the system is ready to record from day one, with space for a second drive if retention needs grow. Support for cameras up to 32 MP resolution, H.265+ compression, and an HDMI output capable of 8K means this NVR is not just a current-generation install - it has room to grow as camera technology advances. Integrators who want a clean, single-cable PoE run to each camera and a recorder that handles the network stack internally will get exactly that here.
What This NVR Actually Does
8-Port Built-In PoE
Each of the 8 network ports supplies power and data over a single Cat cable - no separate PoE switch required. The total PoE budget is 120W, which comfortably supports a full complement of standard IP cameras without needing to calculate per-port budgets on most builds.
Up to 32 MP Camera Support
The NVR accepts IP cameras up to 32 MP resolution in ultra HD mode, making it compatible with current high-resolution Hikvision models. This means the recorder will not be the bottleneck when upgrading cameras over the life of the system.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ reduces storage consumption compared to standard H.264, meaning the included 6TB drive stores more footage per camera. On a full 8-camera system running 24/7, this directly affects how many days of recording you retain before the drive loops.
8K HDMI Monitor Output
The HDMI output supports up to 8K (7680 x 4320) at 30Hz and 4K at 60Hz, so connecting a high-resolution display gives a sharp multi-camera live view. The independent VGA output runs at 1920 x 1080, allowing a second monitor to be connected simultaneously.
Dual HDD Bays, 6TB Included
This bundle ships with a 6TB drive already installed. The second SATA bay accepts an additional drive up to 14TB, so the system can be expanded to 20TB total without any other hardware changes - useful when retention requirements change after installation.
TLS Stream Encryption and Access Controls
Stream over TLS encrypts video in transit, reducing exposure on networked installations. The double verification requirement for playback and downloads adds a second authentication layer, which matters on sites where footage may be required for insurance or legal review.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial installers on small-to-medium builds: The 8 built-in PoE ports eliminate the need for a separate managed switch, reducing rack space and cabling complexity on 8-camera commercial jobs such as retail fit-outs, medical suites, and professional offices.
- Property managers specifying warehouse or logistics sites: The 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth and 32 MP camera compatibility allow a mix of high-resolution cameras at key points - entry gates, loading docks - without the recorder throttling quality.
- Integrators future-proofing a client's system: The dual HDD bays, 8K HDMI output, and 32 MP input support mean this NVR will not need replacing when the client upgrades to higher-resolution cameras or adds a second display position.
- Sites with compliance or evidentiary footage requirements: TLS stream encryption and double verification on playback and downloads make this NVR suitable for environments where chain-of-custody and access logs matter - strata buildings, child care facilities, and healthcare.
Honest Assessment
The DS-7608NI-M2/8P does its best work on clean PoE builds where keeping the infrastructure simple matters. Eight ports, 120W PoE budget, H.265+ compression, and a ready-to-run 6TB drive make it genuinely capable as a self-contained 8-camera recorder. The 8K HDMI output and 32 MP input support are not marketing numbers - they reflect real headroom for higher-resolution cameras already in the Hikvision range. TLS encryption and dual-verification playback are worthwhile additions on any networked install. Where this NVR reaches its ceiling: it handles exactly 8 cameras and does not support channel expansion. If a site is likely to grow beyond 8 cameras within the next few years, specifying a 16-channel recorder from the outset is the more cost-effective path. Available through Security Australia, this model is well-suited for builds where the channel count is fixed and the priority is getting the most performance within that 8-camera ceiling.
Before You Buy
HDD and PoE Budget Note: The 6TB drive is pre-installed in bay 1. Bay 2 accepts a second SATA surveillance-grade drive up to 14TB - standard desktop HDDs are not recommended in NVRs running 24/7. On the PoE side, the total 120W budget is shared across all 8 ports. If you plan to connect cameras with IR heaters, or PTZ cameras drawing higher wattage, calculate per-camera draw before finalising the camera selection to confirm the budget is not exceeded.
Ultra HD Mode Requirement: Full 32 MP input support requires ultra HD resolution mode to be enabled in the NVR settings. In standard mode, maximum input resolution is lower. If you are specifying 12 MP or higher cameras for any channel, confirm ultra HD mode is active during setup to avoid the recorder downscaling the incoming stream.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing exactly 8 IP cameras and want a single-box solution with no external PoE switch - the 8 built-in PoE ports and 120W budget handle a full camera complement from the recorder itself.
- Good match if: The site needs footage retained with controlled access - TLS stream encryption and dual-verification playback satisfy environments where footage security and audit trails are a documented requirement.
- You may need a different model if: The site has more than 8 cameras now, or is planned to expand beyond 8 in the near term - a 16-channel or 32-channel NVR will serve that requirement without replacing this unit mid-project. Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your build is fixed at 8 cameras, you want to avoid a separate PoE switch, and you need a recorder capable of accepting high-resolution Hikvision cameras now and into the future.
- You may need a different model if: The site has more than 8 cameras or has firm plans to expand - a 16-channel or 32-channel NVR will accommodate growth without a recorder replacement mid-contract.
- Pairs well with: Hikvision IP turret, dome, or bullet cameras with PoE - particularly 4 MP to 8 MP models where the H.265+ compression and 128 Mbps bandwidth deliver the best balance of image quality and storage efficiency on this channel count.
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR need a separate PoE switch to power the cameras?
No. The DS-7608NI-M2/8P has 8 built-in PoE ports and a 120W shared power budget, so cameras connect directly to the recorder with a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable each. A separate PoE switch is not required for a standard 8-camera installation, which keeps cabinet space and cabling complexity to a minimum. -
Will this NVR work with 8 MP or 12 MP cameras?
Yes. The NVR supports cameras up to 32 MP per channel, and handles 8-channel decoding at 8 MP natively. For 12 MP and higher inputs, ultra HD resolution mode must be enabled in the NVR settings before the full resolution is processed - leaving it in default mode will limit the incoming stream. -
How much footage will the included 6TB drive store?
It depends on camera resolution, frame rate, and scene activity. H.265+ compression significantly reduces file sizes compared to H.264, which is the most direct factor in extending retention. For a practical estimate, run the camera specifications through Hikvision's storage calculator - the NVR's dual HDD bays allow a second drive up to 14TB to be added if the required retention period exceeds what 6TB provides. -
Can multiple people access this NVR remotely at the same time?
Yes. The DS-7608NI-M2/8P supports up to 128 simultaneous remote users via Hik-Connect or direct network access. This is sufficient for multi-stakeholder setups - for example, a strata manager, security contractor, and building supervisor each maintaining independent logins and accessing live or recorded footage concurrently. -
Does this NVR encrypt the video stream?
Yes. Stream over TLS is supported, which encrypts the video data in transit across the network. Combined with double verification for playback and downloads - requiring a second authentication step before footage can be reviewed or exported - this provides meaningful access controls on sites where footage security is a documented requirement. -
Can I connect two monitors at the same time?
Yes. The NVR has independent HDMI and VGA outputs that operate simultaneously. The HDMI output supports up to 8K resolution, while the VGA output runs at 1920 x 1080. A common use case is connecting a high-resolution display via HDMI for the main monitoring position and a secondary screen via VGA at a different desk or room. -
Will this NVR expand beyond 8 cameras if the site grows?
No. The DS-7608NI-M2/8P is fixed at 8 channels and does not support licence-based channel expansion. If the site is likely to require more than 8 cameras, specifying a higher-channel NVR from the outset is the more practical approach. The full Hikvision NVR range, including 16-channel and 32-channel models, is stocked by Security Australia.
