Product Overview
Model: DS-7608NI-I2-8P-NOHDD
Who This Is For
When keeping cabling clean and the install straightforward is the priority, the DS-7608NI-I2/8P is built for exactly that. This 8-channel PoE NVR suits installers and integrators deploying IP camera systems across small commercial sites, offices, retail premises, warehouses, and residential properties where all 8 cameras run back to a single central recorder. The 8 built-in PoE ports mean each camera needs only one Cat5e or Cat6 cable - no separate PoE switches, no extra power supplies at each camera point. Support for resolutions up to 12 MP gives the system headroom to run 4K cameras now or in the future, while dual SATA bays accept up to 8 TB per drive, giving the installer flexibility to size storage around retention requirements. This listing is the NVR only with no hard drives included, so the buyer selects drives to match their footage retention and budget. It suits buyers who already have drives on hand or want to spec storage independently.
What This NVR Actually Does
8 Built-In PoE Ports
Each of the 8 ports supplies power and data over a single cable, removing the need for a separate PoE switch. Cameras connect directly to the NVR, which simplifies the rack or cabinet layout and cuts the total component count on most installs.
4K HDMI Output at 60Hz
The HDMI output runs at 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz, so live view on a 4K monitor is sharp and fluid. A separate VGA output at 1080p runs simultaneously, allowing a second display - useful at monitoring stations where operators need both a desk screen and a wall monitor.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ reduces storage demand significantly compared to H.264, which directly extends how many days of footage the installed drives can hold. For an 8-camera system running continuously, this difference in retention can be the deciding factor between 14 days and 30 days on the same drive capacity.
Up to 12 MP Recording
The NVR handles incoming streams up to 12 MP, with decoding rated at 2 channels at 12 MP (20 fps) or 4 channels at 8 MP (25 fps). This gives the system genuine compatibility with high-resolution IP cameras including 4K and above, without artificially downscaling recorded footage.
8-Channel Synchronous Playback
All 8 channels can be reviewed simultaneously during playback, so an incident can be cross-referenced across camera angles in one view without toggling between feeds. This is relevant for post-event review at retail sites or when providing footage to insurers or police.
Remote Access via Hik-Connect
Hik-Connect and DDNS support enables remote viewing from a mobile app or PC client. Web access runs without a browser plug-in, which matters for modern Chrome or Edge setups where legacy ActiveX or NPAPI plug-ins are no longer supported.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Installers: Running structured cabling to a central rack or comms cabinet and wanting to avoid a separate PoE switch - the 8 integrated PoE ports handle both power and data for every camera from the one device.
- Retail and Hospitality Operators: Specifying a self-contained 8-camera system for a single site where 4K footage and multi-week retention are required for insurance and incident management purposes.
- Small Commercial Property Managers: Deploying a recorder across offices, warehouses, or strata-managed buildings where a 1U rack unit fits neatly into an existing communications enclosure.
- IT and Facilities Teams: Adding IP surveillance to an existing network infrastructure and needing plug-in-free web access and TLS stream encryption for network security compliance.
- Buyers Sourcing Drives Separately: Purchasing the NVR alone because they already have compatible surveillance-grade HDDs on hand, or want to select drive capacity based on a specific retention calculation rather than a bundled default.
Honest Assessment
The DS-7608NI-I2/8P does the core job of an 8-channel PoE NVR well. The integrated PoE ports eliminate a switch from the BOM, H.265+ compression genuinely extends storage life compared to older codecs, and 4K HDMI output with simultaneous VGA gives flexibility at the monitoring point. Decoding up to 12 MP per channel means the recorder will not become a bottleneck if higher-resolution cameras are added later. The 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth is adequate for 8 channels of standard 4K at typical bit rates, but installers running 8 x 4K cameras at maximum bit rate should verify the total stream load stays within that ceiling. This unit ships without hard drives, so storage must be budgeted and purchased separately - surveillance-grade drives are strongly recommended over desktop drives for this application. It is available through Security Australia. If channel expansion beyond 8 is anticipated, a 16-channel model would be the better long-term choice.
Before You Buy
Storage Planning Note: This NVR ships with no HDD installed. The 2 SATA bays each support up to 8 TB, giving a maximum raw capacity of 16 TB. For continuous 8-channel 4K recording at typical bit rates with H.265+, plan on roughly 2-4 TB per channel per month depending on scene complexity and motion frequency. Calculate your target retention period before ordering drives, and specify surveillance-rated HDDs (such as those in the WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk range) rather than desktop drives - consumer drives are not rated for the continuous write cycles this NVR will generate.
PoE Budget Note: The NVR provides 8 PoE ports, but the total PoE power budget of the unit is shared across all ports. If connecting multiple high-draw cameras such as PTZ models or multi-sensor cameras, verify that the combined PoE draw of all connected devices does not exceed the NVR's total PoE budget. Cameras with PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) requirements may exceed what this NVR's ports supply - check the power class of each planned camera before finalising the design.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying exactly 8 IP cameras and want to power and connect all of them from a single device - the 8 integrated PoE ports remove the need for a separate switch and simplify the cabinet layout.
- Good match if: Your cameras are 4K or up to 12 MP and you need the recorder to handle that resolution without downscaling - the decoding specification supports up to 12 MP per channel with multi-channel 4K playback.
- You may need a different model if: You are planning for more than 8 cameras now or in the near future - a 16-channel NVR would be a better fit and avoids replacing the recorder when the site expands.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need exactly 8 PoE channels in a single 1U device and want the simplicity of connecting cameras directly to the recorder without a separate switch, while retaining 4K and 12 MP recording capability.
- You may need a different model if: Your camera count is likely to exceed 8 - a 16-channel NVR provides the expansion room without requiring a recorder swap, and avoids the cost of replacing infrastructure as the site grows.
- Pairs well with: Hikvision 4K or 8 MP turret or dome IP cameras with H.265+ encoding, and surveillance-grade SATA HDDs sized to your retention requirement.
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR come with hard drives included?
No. This listing is the NVR only with no HDDs installed. The unit has 2 SATA bays, each supporting drives up to 8 TB, giving a maximum raw capacity of 16 TB. Hard drives need to be purchased separately - surveillance-grade HDDs are strongly recommended for this application due to the continuous write cycles involved. -
Will this NVR work with non-Hikvision IP cameras?
Yes, with limitations. The DS-7608NI-I2/8P supports ONVIF-compatible IP cameras, but features such as VCA events, H.265+ compression, and Hik-Connect integration are only fully functional with Hikvision cameras. Third-party ONVIF cameras will typically record and display video, but advanced analytics and compression benefits may not apply. -
Does this NVR support 4K cameras on all 8 channels simultaneously?
Yes, up to the 80 Mbps incoming bandwidth limit. The decoding spec supports 8 channels at 4 MP at 30 fps, or a mix of higher-resolution channels at reduced frame counts - for example, 2 channels at 12 MP (20 fps) or 4 channels at 8 MP (25 fps). Running all 8 channels at maximum 4K bit rate approaches the 80 Mbps ceiling, so installers should verify total stream load during design. -
Do I need a separate PoE switch to connect cameras to this NVR?
No. The NVR has 8 independent PoE ports built in, so each camera connects directly to the NVR with a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carrying both data and power. A separate PoE switch is not required for a standard 8-camera install, which simplifies the cabinet and reduces the total component count. -
Can I access recorded footage remotely without being on the same network?
Yes. The NVR supports Hik-Connect for remote access via mobile app and PC client, and includes DDNS support for direct remote connectivity. Web access is plug-in-free, which means it works on current browser versions without requiring legacy ActiveX or NPAPI plug-ins. Security Australia stocks the full range of compatible Hikvision cameras and accessories to complement this recorder. -
Is this NVR rack-mountable?
Yes. The DS-7608NI-I2/8P uses a 1U rack-mount form factor, fitting a standard 19-inch server or comms rack. This makes it suitable for installations where the NVR is housed in a dedicated comms room or locked cabinet alongside networking equipment. -
How much storage do I need for 30 days of footage across all 8 cameras?
It depends on resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. As a rough guide using H.265+ at 4K and typical bit rates, plan for approximately 2-4 TB per camera per month for continuous recording. For 8 cameras over 30 days, that puts the estimate at 16-32 TB - more than the 16 TB maximum this NVR supports. Reducing bit rate, lowering frame rate, or using motion-triggered recording rather than continuous can bring storage requirements within the 16 TB ceiling. Use Hikvision's storage calculator to generate a more accurate figure for your specific camera and bit rate configuration.
