Product Overview
Model: DS-7608NI-I2/8P-4tb
Who This Is For
For installers and property owners who need a dedicated 8-channel PoE NVR that ships ready to record without a separate hard drive purchase, the Hikvision DS-7608NI-I2/8P with 4TB pre-installed is a practical starting point. Eight built-in PoE ports mean cameras connect directly to the recorder over a single Cat cable per camera - no separate PoE switch required, and no additional power runs to each camera position. The 80Mbps incoming bandwidth handles a full load of high-resolution cameras without bottlenecking, and the dual HDD bay gives room to add a second drive later as footage retention needs grow. It suits small commercial sites, strata buildings, warehouses, and residential properties where an integrator is specifying a clean, cabled IP system around Hikvision cameras and wants the NVR to anchor the installation with room to scale.
What This NVR Actually Does
8 Built-In PoE Ports
Each of the 8 PoE ports powers and connects a camera over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable. There is no separate PoE switch to source, configure, or find rack space for. The recorder handles power delivery and video on the same run, which simplifies both the install and ongoing fault-finding.
4K Recording Output
The NVR supports 4K resolution recording and outputs to a 4K HDMI display. When paired with 4K cameras, you get the full resolution stored and viewable locally - useful where tight framing means a single camera is covering a wide area and detail extraction matters during a review.
80Mbps Incoming Bandwidth
With all 8 channels occupied, 80Mbps of incoming bandwidth gives each camera a healthy data budget - enough for high-resolution streams with H.265+ compression running simultaneously. You will not hit a bandwidth ceiling with a full load of 4K or 8MP cameras on this unit.
4TB Pre-Installed, Dual Bay Ready
A 4TB surveillance-grade hard drive comes fitted, so the unit records from the first camera connection. The second HDD bay is open, allowing a straightforward capacity upgrade later without touching the existing drive or reconfiguring the system from scratch.
AcuSense-Compatible Decoding
When paired with Hikvision AcuSense cameras, the NVR decodes and stores the AI-classified event data generated at the camera. Human and vehicle detection alerts work end-to-end through the system, reducing nuisance motion triggers from wind, animals, and lighting changes at the recording level.
Plug-and-Play Camera Discovery
Hikvision cameras plugged into the onboard PoE ports are detected and added automatically. For straightforward installs using Hikvision cameras throughout, this eliminates manual IP address assignment per channel and reduces the time between first camera connection and a live, recording system.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators: Specifying a clean Hikvision IP system for a small commercial site where all-in-one PoE and pre-fitted storage reduces van stock and install time.
- Strata and Body Corporate Managers: Installing or upgrading an 8-camera building system where a single-cabinet solution with no external switch simplifies maintenance and future service calls.
- Warehouse and Light Industrial Operators: Pairing with AcuSense cameras to get human and vehicle detection across loading areas and access points, with the NVR handling event-based recording.
- Retail and Hospitality Businesses: Running up to 8 cameras at up to 4K resolution across a single premises where the 4TB drive provides meaningful footage retention before overwrite.
- Residential Installers: Setting up a permanent cabled IP system at a larger home or acreage property where wireless cameras are not appropriate and a professional-grade recorder is preferred over a consumer DVR.
Honest Assessment
The DS-7608NI-I2/8P does the fundamentals of an 8-channel PoE NVR well. The onboard PoE ports, 80Mbps bandwidth, 4K support, and pre-installed 4TB drive make it a genuinely straightforward unit to deploy on a Hikvision camera system. The dual HDD bay means you are not locked into 4TB permanently - drop in a second drive when retention becomes the priority. AcuSense compatibility is a meaningful advantage when the camera selection supports it, giving the system smarter event handling without additional software.
Where this unit will not serve you: if your site needs more than 8 cameras now, or is likely to grow beyond 8 channels in the near term, you will need to look at a 16-channel model rather than trying to extend this recorder. It is also not designed for third-party ONVIF cameras where deep feature integration and AI decoding are required - it performs best in an all-Hikvision setup. The DS-7608NI-I2/8P is available through Security Australia as a storage-ready unit.
Before You Buy
PoE Power Budget: The DS-7608NI-I2/8P has a total onboard PoE budget of 120W across all 8 ports. If you are running multiple PTZ cameras or cameras with built-in heaters, check the individual power draw per camera and confirm the combined load stays within 120W. Exceeding the budget will cause cameras to drop power or fail to initialise. For PTZ-heavy installs, a separate PoE switch may be the better power source for those specific channels.
HDD Compatibility: The second HDD bay is empty. When adding a drive, use a surveillance-rated HDD (such as Seagate SkyHawk or Western Digital Purple series) rather than a desktop drive. Surveillance HDEs are rated for continuous 24/7 write cycles; desktop drives are not and will fail earlier in this application. Maximum supported single drive capacity per bay should be confirmed against Hikvision's current HDD compatibility list before purchase.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing up to 8 Hikvision IP cameras and want a single unit that handles PoE power delivery, recording, and storage without a separate switch - the 8 built-in PoE PnP ports manage all of this directly from the recorder.
- Good match if: The site uses or plans to use Hikvision AcuSense cameras, and you want human and vehicle detection events stored and managed end-to-end through a compatible NVR without additional software licences.
- You may need a different model if: Your camera count is at or close to 8 and the site is likely to expand - a 16-channel NVR gives you headroom without requiring a full system replacement, and Security Australia stocks suitable options in the same range.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a self-contained 8-channel PoE NVR that arrives ready to record, with all camera power and data handled through the unit itself and no external switching hardware required.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 8 camera positions now or is planning expansion within 2 years - a 16-channel NVR in the same Hikvision I-Series range will give you headroom without replacing the recorder mid-project.
- Pairs well with: Hikvision AcuSense turret or bullet cameras in the 4MP to 8MP range, where the AI classification at the camera level integrates directly with the NVR's event management without additional software or licences.
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR work with non-Hikvision cameras?
Yes, with limitations. The DS-7608NI-I2/8P supports ONVIF-compliant third-party cameras on the PoE ports, but AI features like AcuSense human and vehicle classification will not function end-to-end outside of Hikvision cameras. Plug-and-play auto-detection also applies to Hikvision cameras only. Third-party cameras may require manual IP assignment and channel configuration, and some advanced recording features may be unavailable. -
Will this NVR handle 8 x 4K cameras simultaneously?
Yes. The 80Mbps incoming bandwidth and 4K recording support are designed for a full 8-channel load at high resolution. With H.265+ compression enabled at the camera level, 8 channels of 4K footage runs well within the bandwidth ceiling. H.265+ reduces storage consumption significantly compared to H.264 without a meaningful quality trade-off, which is relevant for retention planning on the 4TB drive. -
How much footage does 4TB actually store?
It depends on camera resolution, frame rate, compression, and how much motion the scene contains. As a practical guide, 8 channels of 4MP AcuSense cameras recording continuously at H.265+ will typically yield 2 to 3 weeks of footage on 4TB before overwrite. Higher resolution cameras or H.264 compression will reduce that. Using motion or event-based recording rather than continuous recording extends retention considerably. The second HDD bay allows you to double capacity if your retention requirement exceeds what 4TB delivers. -
Does the DS-7608NI-I2/8P support remote viewing?
Yes. The NVR connects to your network via the onboard Gigabit Ethernet port and supports remote access through Hikvision's Hik-Connect platform and the iVMS-4200 desktop client. Live view, playback, and event notifications are accessible remotely. Port forwarding or Hik-Connect's P2P cloud connection are the 2 standard approaches - P2P avoids the need to open ports on the router for most residential and small business setups. -
What is the total PoE power budget, and does it matter for my camera selection?
Yes, it matters. The total PoE budget across all 8 ports is 120W. Standard dome and bullet cameras typically draw 6W to 12W each, so a full load of 8 cameras at 10W each uses 80W - within budget. Problems arise when multiple PTZ cameras, cameras with built-in heaters, or high-draw illuminators are specified. Add up the individual power draw from each camera's datasheet before finalising the camera selection. If the combined load is close to or over 120W, consider running higher-draw cameras from a separate PoE switch rather than the NVR's onboard ports. -
Can I connect this NVR to an existing network and access cameras remotely while also recording locally?
Yes. The NVR operates independently of internet connectivity for local recording - it records to the internal HDD regardless of whether it has a network connection. When connected to your LAN via the Gigabit port, remote access and notifications function through Hik-Connect or iVMS-4200. Local recording does not pause or degrade if the internet connection drops, which is an important distinction for sites with unreliable connectivity. The DS-7608NI-I2/8P is supplied by Security Australia and ships with the 4TB drive pre-installed and ready to configure on first power-up.
