Model: DS-7604NI-M1-4P-NOHDD

Who This Is For

When keeping the installation lean and the channel count deliberate is the priority, the DS-7604NI-M1-4P is the NVR to specify. Designed for 4-camera IP systems at small offices, retail shopfronts, childcare centres, and residential properties, it powers each camera directly over the same Cat cable that carries the video - no separate power runs required. The built-in 4-port PoE switch handles up to 40 Mbps incoming bandwidth and decodes all 4 channels at full 8 MP, so every camera in the system runs at its native resolution simultaneously. The HDMI output supports up to 8K for future display compatibility, and TLS encryption secures the video stream end to end. This unit ships without a hard drive, making it straightforward to pair with whatever capacity drive suits your intended retention period before installation.

What This NVR Actually Does

4-Port Built-In PoE Switch

Each of the 4 PoE ports delivers power and data over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable. There is no need for a separate PoE switch or injectors - cameras connect directly to the NVR, which simplifies the cabinet and reduces points of failure in the installation.

Full 8 MP Decoding Across All 4 Channels

The NVR decodes up to 4 channels simultaneously at 8 MP. Every camera in the system - whether 2 MP, 4 MP, or 8 MP - records and displays at its native resolution with no forced downscaling due to processing limits.

H.265+ Compression

H.265+ reduces the storage footprint compared to H.264 by analysing scene complexity frame by frame. For a 4-camera system running continuously, this directly extends how many days of footage a given hard drive will hold before overwriting begins.

8K HDMI Output

The HDMI port supports up to 8K resolution output for local display. A secondary VGA output runs simultaneously at up to 1080p, allowing the same NVR to drive a high-resolution main monitor and a separate secondary screen at the same time.

TLS Encrypted Transmission

TLS encryption secures the video stream between the NVR and remote access clients. This is particularly relevant for commercial installs where footage may contain sensitive areas, staff, or customer activity that requires protection from interception.

ANR - Automatic Network Replenishment

If the network connection between a camera and the NVR drops temporarily, ANR allows compatible cameras to buffer footage locally on an SD card, then automatically synchronise the missing recordings to the NVR once the connection is restored.

Who Buys This Model

  • Small business owners: Retail shops, cafes, and offices with 2 to 4 cameras who want a single-unit solution that powers and records all cameras without a separate switch.
  • Residential installers: Specifying a tidy 4-camera home system where running individual power cables to each camera is impractical, and where a compact NVR footprint matters.
  • Childcare and medical facility managers: Sites requiring encrypted transmission and full 8 MP recording to meet documentation and compliance standards for incident review.
  • Security integrators building staged systems: The no-HDD configuration allows installers to source a surveillance-grade drive to the required capacity separately and install it on-site, rather than replacing a bundled drive that may be undersized.

Honest Assessment

The DS-7604NI-M1-4P does its core job well: it consolidates power, data, and recording for a 4-camera IP system into a single device. The integrated PoE switch removes the need for external switching hardware, the 8 MP decoding ceiling means no resolution compromise for current-generation cameras, and H.265+ genuinely extends drive longevity compared to older compression formats. The dual HDMI and VGA outputs add real flexibility for sites that need two simultaneous displays.

Where this unit will not stretch: it is a 4-channel recorder, and there is no expansion path for additional cameras within this chassis. Sites likely to grow beyond 4 cameras in the near term should consider an 8-channel model from the outset. The single SATA bay also limits storage to one drive. For high-channel or multi-drive redundancy requirements, a rack-mount NVR is the more appropriate direction. Available through Security Australia with compatible Hikvision IP cameras to complete the system.

Before You Buy

HDD Selection Note: This unit ships with no hard drive installed. The single SATA bay accepts standard 3.5-inch surveillance-grade HDDs. For a 4-camera system recording at 8 MP with H.265+, a 4 TB to 6 TB surveillance drive typically covers 30 days of continuous footage depending on scene complexity and frame rate settings. Fit a surveillance-rated drive (not a desktop drive) to avoid premature failure from the continuous read-write workload of a 24/7 recording system.

PoE Budget: Confirm the combined power draw of your chosen cameras stays within the NVR's PoE power budget. Cameras with IR, heaters, or wiper accessories draw more current - check each camera's PoE class before finalising the channel layout to avoid under-powering individual ports.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are running 2 to 4 IP cameras and want to power them directly from the NVR over a single cable run per camera - no external PoE switch required.
  • Good match if: Your cameras are 4 MP or 8 MP and you need the NVR to decode and record all channels simultaneously at full resolution without performance compromise.
  • You may need a different model if: You are planning more than 4 cameras now or in the near future - an 8-channel or 16-channel NVR will serve the system better from the start, and Security Australia stocks a range of higher-channel options.

Real-World Scenarios

Small Retail Shopfront

A 3-camera layout covering entry, counter, and stockroom. The built-in PoE switch means cameras run off the NVR directly - no patch panel, no separate switch, no injectors. The whole system fits in a back-office cabinet with a single power point.

Residential Property - 4 Camera Install

4 cameras covering driveway, front door, side gate, and backyard. H.265+ compression on a 4 TB surveillance HDD gives approximately 30 days of continuous footage. The homeowner reviews incidents remotely via Hik-Connect on their phone.

Childcare Centre

Cameras at entry, indoor play area, outdoor yard, and sleep room - all recording at 8 MP. TLS encryption protects footage containing minors from interception. The dual HDMI and VGA outputs let staff view a monitor at reception and in the director's office simultaneously.

Installer Staging a System

An integrator sources this NVR without a drive, then fits a surveillance-grade HDD matched to the client's required retention period on-site. ANR-capable cameras buffer locally during any network disruption and sync the gap automatically once connectivity resumes.

Small Office with Two Displays

The HDMI port drives a high-resolution display at the reception desk, while the VGA output simultaneously runs a second monitor at the manager's workstation. Both screens show live or playback footage from the same NVR without additional hardware.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a compact 4-channel NVR with integrated PoE that powers and records all cameras from a single unit, with full 8 MP decoding on every channel simultaneously.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site has more than 4 cameras, or if you anticipate growth beyond 4 channels - an 8-channel or 16-channel NVR is the right step up and will cost less in the long run than replacing this unit early.
  • Pairs well with: Hikvision 4 MP or 8 MP IP turret, dome, or bullet cameras with PoE - particularly models supporting H.265+ and ANR for SD card buffering on compatible units.

Common Questions

  1. Does this NVR come with a hard drive included?

No. The DS-7604NI-M1-4P ships without a hard drive. It has a single SATA bay that accepts a standard 3.5-inch HDD. You will need to purchase and install a surveillance-grade drive separately. A desktop-class drive is not recommended for continuous recording duty - look for drives rated for 24/7 NVR use.
  2. Will this NVR work with non-Hikvision IP cameras?

Partially. The NVR supports ONVIF-compliant cameras from other brands, but full feature integration - including smart search, VCA event alerts, and ANR - works reliably with Hikvision cameras. Third-party ONVIF cameras will typically provide basic recording and live view, but advanced analytics and some remote management functions may not operate correctly.
  3. Can I connect cameras wirelessly - do all 4 cameras need to be wired?

All 4 camera connections on this NVR are wired PoE ports. There is no built-in Wi-Fi. All cameras in the system connect over Cat5e or Cat6 cable to the 4 PoE ports on the rear of the unit. Wireless cameras are not compatible with this NVR's direct-connect PoE ports.
  4. Does this NVR support remote viewing on a smartphone?

Yes. The DS-7604NI-M1-4P supports remote access via the Hik-Connect app, available on iOS and Android. You can view live footage, review playback, and adjust certain configuration settings remotely. The outgoing bandwidth of up to 80 Mbps supports smooth remote streaming across multiple streams simultaneously.
  5. What does H.265+ compression actually mean for storage on a 4-camera system?

H.265+ reduces storage consumption significantly compared to H.264 by encoding only areas of the frame where actual change occurs, rather than reprocessing static background pixels every frame. On a 4-camera system, a 4 TB drive running H.265+ at 8 MP typically retains around 20 to 30 days of continuous footage depending on scene activity levels and configured frame rate. H.264 on the same setup would retain considerably less.
  6. What happens to recording if the network goes down between a camera and the NVR?

ANR (Automatic Network Replenishment) handles this scenario provided the connected cameras support ANR and have an SD card installed locally. During a network outage, the camera records to its own SD card. Once the link to the NVR is restored, the gap in footage is automatically transferred and merged into the NVR's recording timeline. This is a confirmed feature of the DS-7604NI-M1-4P when used with compatible Hikvision cameras - check that your chosen camera model supports ANR before relying on this function. Speak with Security Australia if you need help confirming camera compatibility.
  7. Can this NVR be expanded to more than 4 cameras in the future?

No. The DS-7604NI-M1-4P is a fixed 4-channel recorder. There is no licence upgrade or expansion slot that allows additional cameras to be added to this chassis. If your camera count is likely to grow, selecting an 8-channel or 16-channel model from the outset is the more cost-effective approach.
