Product Overview
Model: DS-2XM6522G1
Who This Is For
For fleet operators, transit authorities, and mobile surveillance integrators who need a camera that can survive constant vibration, pressure washing, and extreme temperature swings while mounted to the exterior of a vehicle. The Hikvision DS-2XM6522G1 is built specifically for outer vehicle applications - buses, trams, rail carriages, security vehicles, and utility trucks - where standard IP cameras simply will not last. With IP68/IP69K dual water and dust certification, it handles high-pressure wash-down cycles without failure. The IK10 vandal resistance rating covers impact from road debris and deliberate interference at stops and depots. A 2.8mm fixed lens gives a wide 105-degree horizontal view, useful for covering entry doors, platform edges, or vehicle surrounds, while 30m IR ensures usable night footage even in unlit yards and depots.
What This Camera Actually Does
IP68/IP69K Dual-Rated Sealing
IP68 covers continuous submersion; IP69K covers high-temperature, high-pressure water jets. For vehicle cameras, IP69K is the critical rating - it confirms the camera survives routine pressure wash-down of the vehicle exterior without water ingress damaging the unit.
120 dB True WDR
Vehicles move between bright sunlight, shaded bays, tunnels, and artificial lighting constantly. 120 dB true WDR compresses extreme contrast in a single frame, keeping detail in both the bright exterior and shaded interior zones simultaneously - important at doorways and platform edges.
30m Infrared Night Vision
With a minimum illumination of 0 Lux when IR is active, the camera continues capturing usable 1080p footage in completely unlit depot yards, loading areas, or overnight stops without needing external lighting on the vehicle or surrounds.
IK10 Impact Resistance
IK10 is the highest mechanical impact rating available. On vehicles operating in public environments, this matters - the camera housing resists direct impact from road debris at speed and deliberate interference at stops, without the dome cracking or optics shifting.
Wide Temperature Range
Rated for -40 degrees C to 70 degrees C, this camera is engineered for vehicles operating across climates - from alpine routes in winter to exposed outdoor yards in Australian summer heat. It will not cycle-fail due to thermal stress the way standard outdoor cameras can.
H.265+ Compression
Mobile NVRs and onboard recording systems have limited storage. H.265+ significantly reduces bitrate compared to H.264 at equivalent quality, extending onboard recording time and reducing the volume of data that needs to be offloaded or transmitted over cellular networks.
Who Buys This Model
- Public Transit Operators: Bus and tram fleets requiring exterior cameras at doors and vehicle corners that survive daily pressure washing without seal failure - the IP69K rating is the specification that clears procurement requirements here.
- Rail and Rolling Stock Integrators: System integrators mounting exterior cameras on rolling stock where the operating temperature envelope of -40 to 70 degrees C and IK10 impact resistance are required to meet rolling stock standards.
- Security Vehicle Operators: Organisations running patrol, cash-in-transit, or utility vehicles where exterior cameras need to resist both environmental exposure and deliberate interference, without requiring specialist maintenance.
- Fleet and Logistics Managers: Operators needing exterior vehicle footage for incident investigation - the wide 105-degree horizontal FOV from the 2.8mm lens covers loading dock approaches and vehicle surrounds from a single camera position.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2XM6522G1 does what very few cameras in its class can claim honestly: dual IP68/IP69K sealing combined with IK10 impact resistance and a -40 to 70 degree C operating range. For outer vehicle mounting, these three ratings together matter more than resolution or AI features. The 120 dB WDR handles the constant lighting transitions that vehicle cameras face, and H.265+ keeps storage requirements manageable on mobile NVR systems. The 2.8mm fixed lens gives a genuinely wide view, suited to door coverage and perimeter monitoring. What this camera will not do is provide optical zoom, AI-based classification, or two-way audio - there is no built-in microphone. It is not designed for static fixed infrastructure mounting where standard IP67 cameras serve well at lower cost. Buyers who need licence plate capture or long-distance recognition will need a different camera type. Available through Security Australia as part of the Hikvision mobile surveillance range.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: This camera supports both 12 VDC (with a 25% tolerance window) and IEEE 802.3af PoE. On vehicle installations, confirm whether your mobile NVR or onboard power system delivers stable 12 VDC within that tolerance range - vehicle electrical systems can produce voltage spikes and drops during engine start cycles that sit outside spec. If powering via PoE from a mobile switch, ensure the switch itself is rated for the vehicle's vibration and temperature environment, not just the camera.
Mounting Note: The 2.8mm fixed lens at 105 degrees horizontal is designed for wide close-range coverage - door areas, platform edges, and vehicle corners within approximately 5-8 metres. It is not suited to reading at distance. Position planning should prioritise coverage of the immediate vehicle exterior rather than long-range approaches, where a longer focal length would be required.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: Your vehicle is subject to regular pressure wash-down and you need confirmed IP69K sealing - this camera is rated for exactly that wash procedure and will not require resealing or replacement from routine cleaning.
- Good match if: You are operating in extreme climate conditions, from cold-climate alpine routes to hot outdoor yards, and need a camera that stays within specification across a -40 to 70 degree C operating range without thermal shutdown.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is licence plate recognition or long-distance identification - a varifocal or ANPR-specific camera type will serve that application better than this 2.8mm wide-angle outer vehicle camera.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a camera rated for both high-pressure wash-down (IP69K) and IK10 impact resistance on a vehicle exterior - standard outdoor IP67 cameras do not meet either requirement reliably in mobile applications.
- You may need a different model if: Your application requires licence plate recognition, optical zoom, or AI-based person and vehicle classification - a dedicated ANPR camera or a varifocal mobile camera type will serve that requirement where this fixed wide-angle unit cannot.
- Pairs well with: A mobile NVR with vehicle-rated power conditioning, capable of accepting IEEE 802.3af PoE or 12 VDC input, and designed to handle vehicle vibration and wide temperature ranges.
Common Questions
-
What is the difference between IP68 and IP69K, and does this camera have both?
Yes, this camera is rated for both IP68 and IP69K. IP68 covers continuous submersion in water beyond 1 metre depth. IP69K is the vehicle-specific standard - it confirms the camera withstands high-temperature (up to 80 degrees C water), high-pressure water jets directed at close range from any angle, which is what happens during a commercial vehicle wash. For outer vehicle mounting, IP69K is the rating that matters most, and this camera carries both. -
Will this camera work in temperatures below zero?
Yes. The DS-2XM6522G1 operates from -40 degrees C to 70 degrees C. This puts it well within the operating range for vehicles on cold-climate routes in Australia and New Zealand, including alpine and overnight environments where temperatures drop significantly and standard outdoor cameras may fail to start or maintain image quality. -
Does this camera support PoE, and what standard does it use?
Yes. The camera supports IEEE 802.3af PoE, which is standard PoE delivering up to 15.4W. It also accepts 12 VDC with a 25% tolerance window. On vehicle installations, confirm that your mobile NVR or onboard PoE switch is rated for the same environmental conditions as the camera - a vehicle-rated PoE switch is necessary to make full use of the PoE input in mobile deployments. -
Does this camera have audio or two-way communication?
No. The DS-2XM6522G1 does not have a built-in microphone or speaker. It is a video-only unit. Applications requiring audio recording or two-way communication at vehicle doors will need a separate audio device or a different camera model that includes integrated audio hardware. -
Will this camera capture usable footage at night without external lighting on the vehicle?
Yes. With IR active, minimum illumination drops to 0 Lux, meaning the camera captures footage in complete darkness using its built-in infrared at up to 30 metres. For depot yards, overnight stops, and unlit routes, this removes the need to keep vehicle exterior lights powered for camera operation. -
Is the 2.8mm lens appropriate for licence plate capture?
No. A 2.8mm fixed lens at 105 degrees horizontal gives a wide, short-range view suited to covering immediate vehicle surrounds - door areas, platform edges, and the immediate exterior zone within roughly 5-8 metres. Licence plate recognition requires a narrower, longer focal length to resolve plate characters at distance. Buyers with ANPR requirements should look at a dedicated ANPR camera type stocked by Security Australia rather than this outer vehicle wide-angle model. -
How does H.265+ affect storage when recording on a mobile NVR?
H.265+ significantly reduces the bitrate required at equivalent image quality compared to H.264. In practical terms, this extends the recording duration achievable on a mobile NVR's internal storage before footage needs to be overwritten or offloaded. For fleets where vehicles return to depot once per shift for data download, H.265+ reduces the storage capacity required to cover a full operational day at 1080p.
