Product Overview

Model: DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ

Who This Is For

For installers and security managers who need a single camera to perform across wildly different lighting conditions - think a loading dock that swings from floodlit at shift change to near-black at 3am - the Hikvision DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ is built for exactly that demand. The combination of DarkFighter low-light sensitivity (0.007 Lux in colour mode) and Lightfighter 120dB true WDR means this camera handles both extremes without manual adjustment or image compromise. The motorised varifocal lens (2.8-12mm) makes it practical for sites where the exact mounting position is not confirmed until installation day, letting the commissioning tech dial in the field of view from ground level rather than repositioning the camera head. At 8MP resolution with EXIR 2.0 IR reaching 50 metres, this is a camera suited to critical infrastructure, industrial perimeters, car parks, and commercial sites where image detail at distance is non-negotiable.

What This Camera Actually Does

DarkFighter Low-Light Imaging

With a minimum illumination of 0.007 Lux in colour mode on a large 1/1.8" sensor, the DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ maintains usable colour video in near-darkness - the kind of low ambient light found in poorly lit car parks, back lanes, or unlit perimeter zones at night.

Lightfighter 120dB True WDR

True 120dB WDR manages scenes where direct sunlight and deep shadow exist in the same frame simultaneously - entry gates, roller door openings, or outdoor retail frontages where glare would wash out a standard camera's image entirely.

Motorised Varifocal Lens (2.8-12mm)

The motorised zoom lens adjusts focus and field of view via software rather than physical lens rotation. On-site commissioning changes - a mounting point moved two metres, a sight line partially blocked - can be corrected from the VMS or local menu without touching the camera housing.

8MP 4K Resolution

At 3840 x 2160 pixels, the DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ captures enough detail that a single camera position can cover a wide zone while still allowing digital zoom into specific areas during review - useful for number plate reads or facial identification at moderate distances.

EXIR 2.0 Night Vision to 50m

EXIR 2.0 distributes infrared illumination more evenly across the frame compared to standard IR arrays, reducing the bright hotspot at the centre of the image. At 50 metres effective range, it covers long driveway approaches, warehouse aisle ends, and outdoor perimeter corridors.

Line Crossing and Intrusion Detection

Built-in video analytics trigger alerts when subjects cross a defined virtual line or enter a marked zone. This reduces reliance on continuous operator monitoring and allows the camera to drive alarm outputs or VMS notifications automatically based on movement behaviour rather than raw motion detection.

Who Buys This Model

  • Industrial Site Security Managers: Facilities with mixed lighting environments - floodlit loading bays adjacent to unlit external perimeters - who need one camera that handles both conditions reliably without swapping between day and night configurations.
  • Electrical Contractors and Integrators: Installers working on commercial projects where final camera placement is confirmed late in the build process benefit from the motorised varifocal lens, avoiding costly remounting when sight lines shift.
  • Car Park and Transport Infrastructure Operators: The 8MP resolution combined with 120dB WDR suits entry and exit points where vehicle headlights create severe contrast problems for standard cameras.
  • Critical Infrastructure and Utilities: The -40°C to +60°C operating range and IP66 plus IK10 ratings make this appropriate for exposed outdoor installations in harsh climates where camera housings face both temperature extremes and physical risk.

Honest Assessment

The DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ does two things genuinely well: it recovers detail in scenes that defeat most cameras - deep shadow, glare, near-darkness - and the motorised lens makes commissioning adjustments practical on complex sites. The 1/1.8" sensor is larger than what most bullet cameras in this class carry, and that size advantage is real in low-light performance. H.265+ compression keeps storage demand manageable for a 4K stream on constrained NVR setups. Available through Security Australia, this is a camera that earns its position on technically demanding installations. Where it will not replace a different product type: if your priority is actively tracking subjects across a large open area, a PTZ with auto-tracking will outperform a fixed-lens bullet regardless of resolution. Similarly, if covert installation is required, the bullet form factor is inherently visible - a dome or turret profile would be a better fit for discreet ceiling mounting.

Before You Buy

PoE+ Required: This camera is powered via 802.3at PoE+ (not standard 802.3af). Confirm your NVR's PoE ports or mid-span injectors support 802.3at before ordering - standard 802.3af switches will not supply sufficient power and the camera will not initialise correctly. If your existing NVR only provides 802.3af per port, a separate 802.3at injector will be needed per camera run.

Lens Variant Confirmation: The DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ is available in both 2.8-12mm and 8-32mm lens variants. Confirm which variant is listed before purchase. The 2.8-12mm suits wide-to-medium range coverage; the 8-32mm suits long-approach corridors or perimeter lines where distance reach is the priority. The IR range of 50 metres applies to both variants.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: Your site has lighting extremes - bright artificial light at entry points and unlit zones beyond - and you need a single camera to handle both without manual switching. The 120dB true WDR and DarkFighter sensor address both ends of that range simultaneously.
  • Good match if: You are commissioning a commercial or industrial site where final camera positioning is subject to change during installation. The motorised 2.8-12mm varifocal lens lets the installer lock in the field of view after mounting rather than before, saving time and avoiding remounting costs.
  • You may need a different model if: Your application requires active subject tracking across a large open area such as a car park or sports facility - a PTZ camera with auto-tracking capability is a more appropriate product type for that requirement and Security Australia carries PTZ options suited to that use case.

Real-World Scenarios

Loading Dock - Shift Transition

A distribution centre loading dock is flooded with artificial light during day shifts and drops to near-darkness between runs. The DarkFighter sensor and 120dB WDR handle both ends of that swing in the same camera position, without operator intervention or profile switching.

Car Park Entry with Headlight Glare

Vehicle headlights at entry barriers create severe contrast that washes out standard cameras. The 120dB true WDR recovers both the licence plate and the driver's face in the same frame, giving security staff usable footage for incident review.

Industrial Perimeter - Late-Stage Install

On a large industrial site where final cable routes shifted the mounting position two metres from the original plan, the motorised varifocal lens lets the installing technician re-establish the required field of view from the ground during commissioning without remounting the camera bracket.

Unlit External Perimeter Fence Line

With 0 Lux minimum illumination using IR and EXIR 2.0 reach to 50 metres, this camera covers a fence line or access corridor in complete darkness. The intrusion detection analytics trigger an alert when a subject enters the defined zone, reducing dependence on continuous live monitoring.

Cold Climate Outdoor Infrastructure

At a utilities or telecommunications site in a high-altitude or cold-climate region, the -40°C lower operating limit and IP66 weather sealing mean the camera remains operational through frost, condensation, and temperature swings that would disable lesser-rated units.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your installation requires genuine low-light colour imaging and strong WDR performance in the same camera, particularly on sites where lighting conditions shift significantly across the day. The 1/1.8" DarkFighter sensor and 120dB true WDR are confirmed hardware advantages over standard outdoor bullet cameras at this price tier.
  • You may need a different model if: Your priority is actively following a moving subject across a wide open area - a PTZ camera with optical zoom and auto-tracking is the appropriate product type for that application, delivering real-time repositioning that a fixed bullet cannot replicate.
  • Pairs well with: A Hikvision PoE+ NVR with H.265+ decoding support to take full advantage of the 4K stream and H.265+ compression savings, and a video management system with analytics alarm input handling to act on the line crossing and intrusion detection outputs.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera require PoE+ or will a standard PoE switch work?

This camera requires 802.3at PoE+ - standard 802.3af PoE will not supply sufficient power. Confirm that your NVR's PoE ports or any mid-span switch you are using is rated 802.3at before purchasing. If your existing infrastructure is 802.3af only, you will need a dedicated 802.3at injector for each camera cable run. Alternatively, the camera can be powered via 12V DC if a local power supply is available at the mounting point.
  2. Will this camera maintain colour video at night without additional lighting?

Yes, in scenes with at least 0.007 Lux of ambient light - the equivalent of distant street lighting or reflected moonlight - the DarkFighter sensor produces colour video. Below that threshold, the IR cut filter switches and the camera produces monochrome IR footage using the EXIR 2.0 emitters to 50 metres. If full-colour night vision with no IR is a requirement, a separate full-colour camera type (such as a Hikvision ColorVu model) would be more appropriate.
  3. What does the motorised lens actually mean for installation?

It means zoom and focus are adjusted electronically via the camera's web interface, VMS software, or NVR menu rather than by rotating the lens barrel manually. In practice, once the camera is mounted and cabled, the commissioning technician can fine-tune the field of view from a laptop or tablet without needing a second person on a ladder at the camera. This is particularly useful when mounting positions shift late in construction, or when the required coverage angle changes after the initial design review.
  4. Does the DS-2CD5A85G0-IZ work with non-Hikvision NVRs?

Yes, with ONVIF-compatible NVRs, basic live view and recording will function. However, the H.265+ compression format and video analytics features (line crossing, intrusion detection) are typically only fully accessible through Hikvision's own NVRs or iVMS-4200 software. On third-party systems you may be limited to H.264 streams, which increases the storage footprint significantly at 8MP resolution. Confirm ONVIF profile compatibility and H.265 decoding support with your NVR manufacturer before deploying on a mixed-brand system.
  5. Is the IK10 rating sufficient for a publicly accessible outdoor location?

IK10 is the highest impact resistance rating in the IK standard, equivalent to withstanding a 20-joule impact. Combined with the IP66 weather sealing, this housing is suited to exposed outdoor positions including those with public access risk. The bullet form factor also serves as a visible deterrent at perimeter positions. For ceiling-mounted indoor applications where aesthetics and vandal resistance are both priorities, a dome-format camera with the same IK10 rating provides a lower-profile alternative available through Security Australia.
  6. What frame rate does this camera record at 4K resolution?

The confirmed maximum frame rate is 60fps at 1080p resolution. At full 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, frame rate is lower - check your NVR's decoding specification for the maximum 4K frame rate it supports, as the limiting factor in most installations will be the NVR's processing capacity rather than the camera itself. For forensic detail capture such as car park or entry point monitoring, 15-20fps at 4K is typically sufficient and keeps storage requirements manageable alongside H.265+ compression.
  7. How does the line crossing detection work and does it generate false alarms?

Line crossing detection triggers an alert when a moving subject crosses a user-defined virtual line in a specified direction or both directions. The camera's processing evaluates movement trajectories rather than simple pixel change, which reduces false triggers from lighting shifts, shadows, or stationary objects compared to basic motion detection. However, environmental factors - swaying vegetation, rain, insects close to the lens - can still cause false triggers. Configuring an appropriate sensitivity level and placing the virtual line away from high-movement background elements during commissioning will improve accuracy significantly.
