Product Overview
Model: DS-2CD2955FWD-I
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying ceiling coverage for lobbies, reception areas, open-plan offices, or childcare rooms will find the DS-2CD2955FWD-I a practical single-camera solution for spaces where a standard camera would require multiple units. Mounted flush to the ceiling, the 1.6mm fixed fisheye lens delivers a full 180-degree field of view from a single install point, capturing the entire room in one feed. With 5MP resolution, 120dB true WDR, and EXIR 2.0 IR out to 10m, the camera handles mixed lighting conditions common in retail and commercial interiors without losing detail in shadows or washed-out highlights. H.265+ compression keeps storage demands manageable on existing NVR infrastructure. The compact dome housing at 120mm diameter sits discreetly on ceiling surfaces, and the IP42 rated indoor design suits controlled interior environments from small meeting rooms through to medium-sized open spaces.
What This Camera Actually Does
180-Degree Fisheye Coverage
The 1.6mm fixed fisheye lens captures a full 180-degree panoramic field from a single ceiling mount point. One camera can cover an entire small-to-medium room, eliminating blind spots and reducing the number of camera positions needed across a floor plan.
5MP Detail Across the Full Frame
The 5MP progressive scan CMOS sensor records at up to 30fps, spreading resolution across the wide fisheye frame. Even after dewarping the panoramic image into virtual PTZ or quad views, individual regions retain enough detail for useful identification at typical indoor distances.
120dB True Wide Dynamic Range
In rooms where natural light through windows conflicts with dimmer interior lighting, 120dB true WDR balances the exposure across both zones simultaneously. Bright doorways or windows no longer blow out the image, and shadowed areas stay visible in the same frame.
EXIR 2.0 Night Illumination
Built-in EXIR 2.0 infrared illuminators provide coverage up to 10m in complete darkness, dropping minimum illumination to 0 Lux with IR active. The even IR distribution reduces the hot-spot effect common on standard IR cameras, maintaining consistent image quality across the full fisheye frame at night.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ smart compression significantly reduces bitrate compared to H.264 at the same 5MP resolution. For sites recording multiple cameras continuously, this translates directly to smaller storage requirements and reduced NVR load without dropping frame rate or resolution.
3D DNR Noise Reduction
3D Digital Noise Reduction processes both spatial and temporal noise from the sensor, keeping the image clean in low-light conditions where noise typically degrades detail. In environments where lighting dims after hours, this prevents the grainy, unclear footage that standard 2D DNR produces.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial fit-out installers: Specifying a single ceiling camera to cover an entire reception or waiting room without running multiple cable drops, using the 180-degree fisheye to simplify the installation layout.
- Childcare and education operators: Needing full-room ceiling coverage where a single mount point captures all corners of a classroom or indoor play area, with 24-hour IR operation for low-light monitoring.
- Retail loss prevention managers: Deploying ceiling fisheye cameras above POS counters or stockrooms where 120dB WDR handles the contrast between interior display lighting and window glare in a single frame.
- Body corporate and strata managers: Installing in lift lobbies, mailroom areas, or common rooms where one discreet 120mm dome camera covers the full space without the visual clutter of multiple cameras.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CD2955FWD-I does what a ceiling fisheye should - it eliminates blind spots in contained indoor spaces with a single cable run and a compact, low-profile housing. The combination of 5MP resolution, true 120dB WDR, and H.265+ compression makes it a genuinely capable choice for small-to-medium rooms where coverage breadth matters more than long-range identification. EXIR 2.0 IR at 10m is appropriate for the room sizes this lens is designed to cover. What it will not do is replace a long-range corridor camera, an outdoor dome, or an AI-capable model with person and vehicle classification. The fisheye projection also means dewarped regions lose resolution compared to a dedicated fixed camera aimed at the same zone - if face identification at 8m or more is the primary requirement, a higher-megapixel turret or varifocal dome will serve that need better. Available through Security Australia, this model suits buyers who understand the fisheye trade-off and are installing it for the right application.
Before You Buy
Power Input: This camera runs on 12V DC only - it does not support PoE. Confirm your installation has a 12V DC power supply at the mounting point before cabling. If your NVR infrastructure is PoE-based, you will need a separate local 12V DC adaptor at the ceiling for this camera, which adds to the installation cost and complexity.
Dewarping Software: The fisheye image output is a circular projection. To make use of virtual PTZ, panoramic, or quad-view dewarping modes, your NVR or VMS must support fisheye dewarping for this camera. Confirm your recording platform's compatibility before specifying this unit. Not all entry-level NVRs include fisheye dewarping as a standard feature.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are covering a single contained indoor room - reception, waiting area, or small retail floor - where one ceiling mount with a 180-degree field of view replaces 2 or 3 individual cameras.
- Good match if: Your site has mixed ambient and natural lighting creating contrast problems, and 120dB true WDR is required to keep both bright and dark zones visible in the same frame.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary goal is long-range identification in a corridor, car park, or outdoor approach - a varifocal turret or motorised zoom camera will deliver better identification distance and can be aimed precisely at the target zone.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need full-room indoor coverage from a single ceiling mount point and want to reduce the number of camera positions and cable runs in the project.
- You may need a different model if: Your application requires identification of individuals at distances beyond 8-10m, or you need outdoor installation - a varifocal turret or motorised zoom camera with a higher IP rating will serve those requirements better.
- Pairs well with: A Hikvision-compatible NVR with fisheye dewarping support, which unlocks virtual PTZ, panoramic strip, and quad-view display modes from the single 5MP fisheye stream.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera support PoE?
No. The DS-2CD2955FWD-I runs on 12V DC only and does not support Power over Ethernet. You will need a dedicated 12V DC power supply at or near the ceiling mount point. If your existing infrastructure is PoE-based, factor in the cost of a local 12V DC adaptor at each camera position before specifying this model. -
Does this camera work outdoors?
No. The DS-2CD2955FWD-I is rated IP42, which provides basic protection against solid particles but is not weatherproof. It is designed strictly for controlled indoor environments. For outdoor fisheye applications, a camera with a minimum IP66 rating and a housing built for external temperature extremes is required. -
Will this camera dewarp the fisheye image automatically?
Not on its own. The camera outputs a raw circular fisheye projection. Dewarping into panoramic, virtual PTZ, or quad-view display modes must be performed by your NVR or VMS software. Hikvision NVRs with fisheye dewarping support can process the stream in real time, but you need to confirm your specific NVR model supports fisheye dewarping before purchasing this camera. -
What are the DORI distances for this fisheye camera?
Fisheye lenses do not have conventional DORI ratings in the same way as fixed or varifocal cameras. The 1.6mm lens produces a 180-degree circular image that is mathematically dewarped - pixel density across the image drops significantly toward the edges of the frame. For practical planning: detection of a person entering the covered area is achievable across the full room, but face-level identification quality at distances beyond 5-6m on a dewarped region should not be assumed. If identification at longer range is a requirement, a dedicated fixed lens camera aimed at that zone will produce better results. -
How does 120dB WDR actually help in an indoor space?
It processes the exposure across high-contrast zones simultaneously in a single frame. In a reception area where a bright window sits behind a dim-lit counter, a camera without true WDR will either expose for the window and silhouette the person, or expose for the interior and blow out the window. At 120dB, both zones are rendered in usable detail in the same image at the same time. -
How much storage does 5MP H.265+ recording consume?
Significantly less than H.264 at the same resolution. H.265+ smart compression typically reduces bitrate by 50-75% compared to H.264, depending on scene complexity and motion levels. For continuous 24-hour 5MP recording, most sites find 1-2TB per camera per week at moderate bitrate settings, though actual usage varies. Confirm your NVR storage calculation using Hikvision's bandwidth and storage calculator before finalising hard drive capacity. The team at Security Australia can assist with storage planning if required. -
Will this camera work in a room larger than 10m across?
The fisheye lens will capture the full 180-degree field regardless of room size, but the 10m IR range is the limit for useful night vision coverage. In a room larger than 10m, areas beyond the IR range will be dark after hours unless ambient lighting is present. During daylight or with artificial lighting active, the camera will still capture the full room - IR range only applies when recording in near-zero light conditions.
