Product Overview
Model: DS-2CD2387G2H-LIU
Who This Is For
When getting usable colour footage at night without leaving floodlights running constantly is the priority, the DS-2CD2387G2H-LIU is the camera most installers reach for. It suits residential properties, small commercial premises, and light industrial sites where eave, soffit, or wall mounting is practical and the owner wants full-colour detail on people and vehicles the moment something triggers. The Smart Hybrid Light system runs on infrared by default - preserving a low-profile nighttime presence - then switches to white light only when the deep-learning engine detects a human or vehicle. Combined with an F1.0 Super Aperture lens and 8MP 4K resolution, the result is footage where faces, clothing, and number plates carry genuine investigative detail rather than a washed-out silhouette. Available in 2.8mm and 4mm lens options to suit different coverage widths and standoff distances.
What This Camera Actually Does
Smart Hybrid Light
The camera runs on infrared illumination as its default night mode. The moment the deep-learning engine classifies a human or vehicle in frame, white light activates automatically to produce vivid colour detail. When the subject leaves, it reverts to infrared. You get colour when it counts without permanently lit floodlight behaviour.
F1.0 Super Aperture + Super Confocal Lens
The large-aperture F1.0 lens pulls in significantly more light than a standard camera lens, directly improving low-light sensitivity. The Super Confocal design maintains equally sharp focus whether operating in infrared or visible white light - so there is no soft-focus switching between modes.
8MP 4K Resolution
At 8 megapixels, the sensor produces frames with enough pixel density to digitally zoom into a recorded scene and still read a number plate or identify a face. The 2.8mm lens reaches a recognition distance of 17 metres; the 4mm lens extends that to 21 metres, per published DORI figures.
130 dB Wide Dynamic Range
A 130 dB WDR rating handles scenes with extreme contrast - a doorway with bright sunlight behind a subject, a car park with dark corners and bright entry lighting. The camera manages the exposure difference so both the bright and shadowed areas remain visible in the same frame simultaneously.
Human and Vehicle Classification
Deep-learning AI distinguishes between humans and vehicles and other motion triggers such as animals or wind-blown foliage. This reduces nuisance alerts significantly and means the white light activation and any push notifications are tied to relevant intrusion events rather than every movement in frame.
Built-in Microphone
The -LIU variant includes a built-in microphone, capturing on-site audio alongside video. This is useful for entry points, reception areas, and small retail environments where ambient sound context - raised voices, breaking glass - adds investigative value to the video record.
Who Buys This Model
- Residential installers: Specifying a single camera for a driveway, side access gate, or rear yard where the owner wants colour footage of nighttime intruders without a permanent white spotlight effect disturbing neighbours or the household.
- Small retail and hospitality operators: Mounting at entry/exit points or outdoor dining areas where the 130 dB WDR manages glass frontage backlight and the built-in microphone adds audio context to incident records.
- Light industrial and warehouse sites: Installing at pedestrian entry points or goods receipt areas where human and vehicle classification filters out conveyor or plant movement and only flags relevant access events.
- Property managers on multi-tenancy sites: Deploying across eave and soffit mounting positions at residential complexes where consistent full-colour night coverage is required without high-wattage permanent lighting infrastructure.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CD2387G2H-LIU does two things particularly well: it produces sharp, colour-accurate night footage by combining an F1.0 aperture lens with event-triggered white light, and the AI classification engine makes that trigger intelligent enough to be genuinely useful rather than a constant annoyance. The 8MP resolution means even the 2.8mm wide-angle version holds enough detail to crop into a recorded scene. The IP67 weatherproof rating makes it appropriate for fully exposed outdoor positions without additional housing. The built-in microphone is a practical addition for entry-point installs where audio context matters. What this camera will not do is provide meaningful coverage beyond approximately 20-40 metres at recognition level - for long driveways, large car parks, or perimeter fencing, a bullet camera with extended IR range or a PTZ with optical zoom will serve better. It also does not carry confirmed thermal imaging or licence plate recognition capabilities. Both the 2.8mm and 4mm variants are available through Security Australia.
Before You Buy
Lens Selection: The 2.8mm lens gives a wider field of view suited to mounting positions 2.5-4 metres high covering a shorter approach or open area. The 4mm lens narrows the angle and is better suited to longer, narrower approaches such as a driveway corridor or alley. Check your mounting height and the distance to the area of interest against the published DORI figures before ordering - recognition distance is 17 metres on the 2.8mm and 21 metres on the 4mm. If you need to cover both width and depth simultaneously, consider pairing two cameras rather than relying on a single unit to compromise on both.
Smart Mode Behaviour: In Smart mode the camera's white light activates only on a detected human or vehicle classification event. If your NVR or VMS does not support Hikvision's AI event streams, you will still get the colour image when light triggers, but the smart classification alerts will not reach the monitoring platform. Confirm your recorder supports Hikvision AcuSense or H.265+ AI event metadata before installing if push notifications and filtered event searches are part of the brief.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need full-colour night footage at a residential entry, retail frontage, or small commercial site and want the white light to activate only on a confirmed human or vehicle detection rather than running continuously.
- Good match if: Your install position is on an eave, soffit, or wall at a height where the 8MP resolution and 17-21 metre recognition range (depending on lens choice) cover the required zone, and IP67 weatherproofing is needed for an exposed outdoor location.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is covering a long perimeter, extended driveway, or car park beyond 40 metres - a bullet camera with dedicated long-range IR or a PTZ camera with optical zoom will provide substantially better coverage at those distances.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 8MP colour night footage at a close to mid-range outdoor position and want the white light to activate intelligently on human or vehicle classification rather than any motion trigger - and the turret form factor suits eave, soffit, or wall mounting.
- You may need a different model if: Your coverage requirement exceeds 40-50 metres or involves a long perimeter fence line, extended car park, or open yard - in those situations a bullet camera with purpose-built long-range IR or a PTZ with optical zoom will perform substantially better at distance.
- Pairs well with: A Hikvision NVR with AcuSense or deep-learning support, which allows the AI classification events from this camera to drive filtered playback searches and push notifications by event type rather than reviewing continuous recording.
Common Questions
-
Does the white light stay on all night or only when something is detected?
It depends on which mode you select. In Smart mode, the camera operates on infrared by default and only activates white light when the deep-learning engine detects a human or vehicle. When the subject leaves, it reverts to infrared. If you prefer 24/7 colour, you can set it to full-colour mode where the white light stays on continuously. IR-only mode (black and white) is also available if you do not want any white light at all. -
Will this camera work for a driveway that is around 15 metres long?
Yes. A 15-metre driveway falls comfortably within the recognition range of both lens variants. The 2.8mm lens achieves recognition at 17 metres and identification at 8 metres per published DORI data; the 4mm extends recognition to 21 metres. For a standard residential driveway, either lens provides sufficient resolution to identify a person's face or read a vehicle's number plate within the usable zone. -
Does the built-in microphone record audio continuously or only on events?
The built-in microphone captures audio continuously alongside video, not only on detection events. Recording behaviour - whether audio is stored continuously or only on alarm - is determined by the NVR or VMS recording schedule settings, not the camera itself. Confirm your recorder supports audio input from network cameras and that local recording laws regarding audio surveillance apply to your intended install location. -
What does the Super Confocal Lens actually fix compared to a standard camera?
It solves a specific focus-shift problem. Standard cameras with large apertures often shift focus slightly when switching between IR and visible white light because the different wavelengths have different focal lengths. The Super Confocal Lens is engineered at the micron level to maintain the same sharp focal point in both IR and white light modes, so footage does not go briefly soft when the camera switches between illumination types at night. -
Does the AI classification work without a Hikvision NVR?
The classification processing happens on-camera - it does not require a Hikvision NVR to detect and classify humans and vehicles. However, to receive filtered event alerts by classification type and to search recorded footage by event category, your NVR or VMS needs to support Hikvision's AI event metadata streams. If connected to a third-party recorder that only supports basic motion detection, the camera will still produce colour footage on detection, but the classification-based alert filtering and smart search will not be available on that platform. -
Is the DS-2CD2387G2H-LIU rated for fully exposed outdoor installation?
Yes. The IP67 rating confirms complete protection against dust ingress and resistance to sustained water immersion - it is suitable for fully exposed eave, soffit, and wall positions without any additional weatherproof housing. IP67 covers rain, wash-down, and condensation. The camera is part of the Security Australia range and is stocked ready for standard residential and commercial outdoor installs. -
How much storage does 8MP 4K footage require compared to a 4MP camera?
8MP footage at full resolution uses roughly twice the bitrate of a 4MP stream at equivalent quality settings before compression. H.265+ compression substantially reduces this - Hikvision's H.265+ is designed to lower bitrate compared to standard H.265 by encoding static background areas at a much lower rate and reserving detail for moving subjects. For storage planning, calculate your expected bitrate at your chosen H.265+ quality setting and multiply by your required retention days and number of cameras to size your NVR storage correctly.
