Hikvision DS-2CD2385G1-I 8MP Black Shadow Outdoor Turret CCTV Camera, H.265+, 30m IR ft Darkfighter Technology
Built as an 8MP outdoor turret camera for demanding surveillance applications, the DS-2CD2385G1-I pairs Hikvision's Darkfighter technology with a 1/2.5" progressive scan sensor to deliver usable colour footage down to 0.008 Lux - well below what standard cameras can resolve. H.265+ compression keeps storage and bandwidth requirements low without sacrificing 4K-level detail. Available in 2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm, and 12mm fixed lens variants to suit different fields of view.
Why This Model
- Darkfighter low-light performance: The sensor captures colour detail down to 0.008 Lux, meaning car parks, laneways, and poorly lit entries stay visible in colour rather than switching to washed-out greyscale.
- 120dB true WDR: High-contrast scenes like entrances with bright daylight behind subjects are balanced automatically, so faces and number plates remain readable rather than blown out.
- AI human and vehicle classification: On-board analytics filter motion alerts by target type, cutting nuisance alarms from trees, animals, and shadows so response effort stays focused on actual intrusions.

Product Overview
Model: DS-2CD2385G1-I
Who This Is For
For installers and property owners who need a high-resolution outdoor turret that handles mixed lighting without a visible bullet housing, the Hikvision DS-2CD2385G1-I delivers 8MP at 3840 x 2160 in a compact, eave-friendly form factor. The "Black Shadow" finish keeps the install discreet against dark soffits or painted fascia, while Darkfighter technology and a 0.008 Lux minimum illumination rating mean the camera continues to produce usable colour detail well into low-light conditions before switching to IR. The 30m EXIR 2.0 infrared range covers driveways, side paths, carpark bays, and yard perimeters where most residential and small commercial incidents occur. Available in 2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm, and 12mm fixed lens variants, the DS-2CD2385G1-I suits buyers who know their coverage angle before purchasing and want a camera that fits neatly into an NVR-based H.265+ system without overcomplicating the spec sheet.
What This Camera Actually Does
8MP True 4K Detail
At 3840 x 2160, footage contains enough pixel density to digitally zoom into a face or plate number during review without losing legible detail. For a fixed turret, this removes the need to deploy additional cameras for close-up identification at medium distances.
Darkfighter Low-Light Colour
A minimum illumination of 0.008 Lux means this camera holds colour image information in conditions where standard sensors have already switched to greyscale IR. Dusk, poorly lit carparks, and streetlit paths are handled without the detail loss typical of older sensors.
120dB Wide Dynamic Range
True 120dB WDR manages scenes where bright sunlight and deep shadow exist in the same frame - building entrances facing the sun, garage openings, or gates with backlit sky. Both the bright and shadow zones render with usable detail rather than one washing out the other.
EXIR 2.0 Night Coverage
The integrated EXIR 2.0 IR illuminator reaches up to 30m, using smart IR technology to adjust intensity automatically and avoid centre overexposure. At close range subjects remain clearly lit; at the edge of the zone detail is still legible rather than fading into noise.
AI Human and Vehicle Classification
On-board analytics distinguish between human and vehicle targets before triggering alerts. This reduces notification fatigue caused by passing animals, blowing debris, or shifting shadows - events that trip standard motion detection without being security-relevant.
H.265+ Compression and Local Storage
H.265+ reduces bandwidth and NVR storage demand considerably compared to H.264 at equivalent resolution. On-board microSD support up to 128GB also allows standalone edge recording, useful as a fallback when network storage is unavailable or as a standalone deployment without an NVR.
Who Buys This Model
- Home installers upgrading from 2MP or 4MP systems: The 8MP sensor provides a significant step up in digital zoom capability and detail retention during post-event review, without moving to a more complex camera platform.
- Small business owners covering shopfronts and carparks: The 120dB WDR and Darkfighter combination handles the high-contrast outdoor lighting common at commercial premises, and AI classification keeps alerts focused on actual people and vehicles.
- Installers specifying Hikvision H.265+ NVR systems: The DS-2CD2385G1-I integrates natively with Hikvision NVRs, with AI event data passed through cleanly for smart search and alert filtering at the recorder level.
- Property managers with eave or soffit mount positions: The compact turret housing mounts cleanly overhead without protruding hardware, keeping the install tidy on residential facades and strata-managed buildings where aesthetics matter.
Honest Assessment
The DS-2CD2385G1-I does the core job of an outdoor turret very well. The 8MP sensor paired with Darkfighter and 120dB WDR delivers strong image quality across a wide range of lighting conditions, and the AI classification genuinely reduces alert noise compared to pixel-based motion detection. H.265+ keeps storage overhead reasonable for a camera at this resolution, and the IP67 housing is properly suited to permanent outdoor exposure. The 30m IR range is appropriate for most residential and small commercial positions - driveways, entries, and yard coverage fit comfortably within that envelope. Where this camera is not the right tool: IR range beyond 30m, such as long paddock approaches or industrial site perimeters, calls for a dedicated bullet camera with extended illumination. Pan-tilt-zoom coverage of wide open areas is outside the fixed-lens scope of this model entirely. The lens variant must also be selected correctly before purchase as the fixed focal length cannot be adjusted post-install. Available through Security Australia in 2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm, and 12mm configurations.
Before You Buy
Lens Selection: The DS-2CD2385G1-I is available in 4 fixed focal lengths - 2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm, and 12mm - and the lens cannot be swapped after purchase. At 8MP, the 2.8mm covers wide entry areas but pixelates detail at distance; the 12mm tightens the field significantly and suits longer identification distances such as a driveway 15-20m from the mount point. Confirm your coverage distance and required field of view before ordering. If you are unsure, the 4mm is the most common general-purpose choice for residential eave positions at 5-10m subject distance.
PoE Standard: This camera requires IEEE 802.3af PoE - a standard output supported by most current Hikvision PoE NVRs and managed PoE switches. Verify that your switch or NVR port outputs 802.3af rather than passive PoE before deploying, as passive 24V PoE (common in some older or budget equipment) is not compatible and can damage the camera.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need an eave or soffit-mounted outdoor camera covering a driveway, entry, or yard area up to 30m and want 8MP detail for post-event review - the turret housing and EXIR 2.0 range are built exactly for this position.
- Good match if: Your install environment has mixed or challenging lighting - sunrise glare on a front entry, or a carpark with both lit and shadowed zones - where 120dB WDR and Darkfighter low-light capability are needed to maintain consistent image quality.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires IR coverage beyond 30m, visibility along long outdoor approaches, or a camera form factor with stronger physical deterrence - a bullet or long-range IR model from the Security Australia outdoor range would be more appropriate in those cases.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 8MP outdoor resolution with Darkfighter low-light performance and AI human/vehicle classification in a compact turret form factor suited to eave, soffit, or wall mounting at distances up to 30m.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires IR illumination beyond 30m, long-range coverage of open outdoor approaches, or a highly visible deterrent housing - an outdoor bullet or long-range IR camera type would suit those needs better and is available in the Security Australia range.
- Pairs well with: A Hikvision PoE NVR with matching H.265+ support and AI event filtering, which enables smart search by human or vehicle target type and passes full classification data through from the camera analytics.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work with a standard PoE switch or NVR?
Yes. The DS-2CD2385G1-I supports IEEE 802.3af PoE, which is the standard output on most current PoE NVRs and managed switches. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera. Confirm that your switch or NVR port is 802.3af compliant rather than passive PoE, as passive 24V systems are not compatible with this camera. -
Will this camera record in colour at night or does it switch to black and white?
It depends on available light. Darkfighter technology allows the DS-2CD2385G1-I to retain colour imaging down to 0.008 Lux, which covers dusk, streetlit environments, and partially lit outdoor spaces. In conditions below that threshold the camera transitions to greyscale IR mode using the EXIR 2.0 illuminator, which extends to 30m. Full colour night vision without any IR requires a separate full-colour camera type. -
What does the AI human and vehicle classification actually do - is it the same as standard motion detection?
No. Standard motion detection triggers on any pixel change in the frame - wind-blown branches, passing headlights, insects near the lens. The AI classification on this camera analyses the shape and movement pattern of a detected object and categorises it as a human, a vehicle, or neither before raising an alert. The practical result is a significant reduction in false notifications for outdoor positions where environmental movement is constant. -
What is the maximum recording resolution and frame rate?
The DS-2CD2385G1-I records at a maximum of 8MP (3840 x 2160) at 20fps. This is the top stream. H.265+ compression is available at this resolution, which reduces the storage and bandwidth requirement compared to H.264 at the same output. A sub-stream at reduced resolution can also run simultaneously for remote viewing over lower-bandwidth connections. -
Can I use a microSD card instead of an NVR with this camera?
Yes. The camera supports microSD, SDHC, and SDXC cards up to 128GB for local edge recording. This allows standalone deployment without a network recorder, or as a recording fallback if the NVR goes offline. For continuous recording at 8MP with H.265+, a 128GB card provides a useful buffer period before overwriting, though exact duration depends on scene complexity and bitrate settings. -
Does this camera have two-way audio?
No. The DS-2CD2385G1-I does not have a confirmed built-in microphone or speaker. It does not support two-way audio. If on-site audio capability or remote announcements are required, a camera model with confirmed integrated audio hardware would be needed. -
How do I choose between the 2.8mm, 4mm, 6mm, and 12mm lens options?
The right lens depends on your camera-to-subject distance and the field of view you need to cover. The 2.8mm provides a wide angle suited to covering a broad area at close range, such as a full carpark bay layout from a corner position. The 4mm is a common general-purpose choice for driveway and entry positions at 5-10m subject distance. The 6mm and 12mm progressively narrow the field of view, making them better suited to longer identification distances - a fence line or gate 15-25m away. The lens cannot be changed post-purchase, so confirm your coverage requirements before ordering. Security Australia stocks all 4 variants.
