Product Overview
Model: AE-MN5043(RJ45) with 4G WiFi
Who This Is For
For fleet operators, transport companies, and mobile security integrators who need a self-contained onboard recording solution that keeps working when vehicles are out of range of fixed infrastructure. The Hikvision AE-MN5043(RJ45) is a 4-channel mobile NVR built for in-vehicle installation, accepting up to 4 IP cameras via PoE and transmitting data back via pluggable 4G or Wi-Fi modules. Built-in GPS logs vehicle positions alongside footage, making it directly useful for logistics fleets, cash-in-transit operators, bus and coach operators, and construction site vehicles that move between locations. The wide 9-36 V DC input handles the voltage swings common in heavy vehicles, and the aluminium chassis is rated to operate from -20 °C to 70 °C - suited to Australian conditions from alpine routes to outback runs. Ships without a hard drive, so storage is specified to the job.
What This NVR Actually Does
4-Channel PoE Recording
4 built-in PoE ports power and connect IP cameras over a single cable each - no separate power runs to cameras inside the vehicle. Supports up to 5MP per channel with H.265 compression, keeping file sizes manageable across continuous recording shifts.
Pluggable 4G and Wi-Fi Modules
The 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity modules are pluggable rather than fixed, allowing the transmission method to be matched to the deployment. Vehicles that regularly return to a depot can sync footage over Wi-Fi; those on remote routes rely on 4G for live monitoring and remote access.
Built-In GPS Tracking
GPS is integrated into the unit, logging vehicle position and route data alongside camera footage. This ties video evidence directly to a geographic location and time stamp - useful for incident investigation, driver behaviour review, and fleet dispatch auditing.
Wide Voltage Input and Power Protection
Accepts 9-36 V DC, covering both 12 V and 24 V vehicle electrical systems. A built-in super-capacitor and shutdown delay protect against data corruption when vehicle power is cut suddenly - particularly relevant for trucks and heavy machinery.
Harsh-Environment Build
Aluminium chassis and aviation-grade connectors handle vibration, dust, and temperature extremes from -20 °C to 70 °C. This isn't a repackaged desktop NVR - the mechanical design is specific to mobile installations where a standard rack unit would fail.
Flexible Storage Configuration
Supports up to 2 HDDs or SSDs with a total capacity up to 2TB. No drive is included, allowing the installer to specify the right drive type - SSD for high-vibration applications, HDD where longer retention at lower cost is the priority.
Who Buys This Model
- Fleet and logistics operators: Need GPS-tagged footage across multiple vehicles to investigate incidents, manage driver behaviour, and maintain an audit trail that links video to route data.
- Cash-in-transit and security vehicle operators: Require onboard recording that continues to function independently of external network infrastructure, with remote monitoring available via 4G when vehicles are in transit.
- Bus, coach, and passenger transport operators: Deploying interior and exterior cameras across a fleet, with Wi-Fi depot sync to retrieve footage at end-of-shift without manual drive removal.
- Mobile security integrators: Building bespoke in-vehicle systems who need an NVR that accepts standard IP cameras via PoE, operates on 12 V or 24 V systems, and survives the mechanical stress of vehicle environments.
- Construction and mining site vehicle managers: Running cameras on plant, haul trucks, or site vehicles in remote locations where -20 °C to 70 °C operating range and vibration resistance are non-negotiable requirements.
Honest Assessment
The AE-MN5043(RJ45) does what a fixed-site NVR cannot: it handles the voltage swings, vibration, and temperature extremes of vehicle operation while keeping GPS position data tied to the video record. The pluggable 4G and Wi-Fi modules offer genuine flexibility across different fleet deployments, and H.265 compression makes a 2TB storage limit more practical than it sounds for continuous multi-camera recording. The wide 9-36 V DC input means one unit works across most commercial vehicle types without additional power conditioning.
It will not suit fixed-site installations - a standard NVR provides more channels, greater storage expansion, and lower cost per channel for any application that does not involve a moving vehicle. It also ships without a hard drive, so budget for a suitable HDD or SSD before commissioning. Available through Security Australia, the AE-MN5043(RJ45) is a specialist product for a specific application - if your installation is fixed to a building, look at the standard NVR range instead.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: This unit ships with no HDD installed. Before commissioning, select a drive rated for mobile or surveillance use - standard desktop drives are not designed for the continuous vibration of a vehicle environment and are likely to fail prematurely. SSD is the preferred choice for high-vibration applications such as mining trucks or off-road plant. Also confirm your 4G and Wi-Fi modules are sourced and fitted prior to installation, as these are pluggable accessories and are not included in the base unit.
Power Wiring Note: The 9-36 V DC input requires a clean, fused supply tapped from the vehicle's electrical system. Connect via a dedicated fused spur rather than tapping an existing accessory circuit - voltage spikes during engine start are common in diesel vehicles and can cause instability if the supply line is shared with high-draw accessories. The built-in super-capacitor provides shutdown protection but does not substitute for a stable supply.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing cameras across a fleet of commercial vehicles and need GPS-tagged footage, remote 4G access, and an NVR that tolerates -20 °C to 70 °C operating temperatures without modification.
- Good match if: Your vehicle runs on a 24 V electrical system - the 9-36 V DC wide-voltage input covers both 12 V and 24 V systems natively, eliminating the need for a DC-DC converter.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation is in a fixed building or site office - a standard PoE NVR will provide more channels, greater storage expansion options, and lower cost per channel for any non-mobile application.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your application requires an NVR that operates inside a moving vehicle, handles both 12 V and 24 V power supplies, includes GPS, and can transmit footage via 4G or Wi-Fi without any fixed network connection.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation is in a fixed building, office, or site compound - a standard PoE NVR will support more channels, larger storage capacity, and greater expansion flexibility at lower cost per channel.
- Pairs well with: Mobile-rated IP cameras designed for in-vehicle installation, with aviation or locking connectors to handle vibration - standard dome or turret cameras are generally not appropriate for vehicle mounting.
Common Questions
-
Will this NVR work on a 24 V truck electrical system?
Yes. The AE-MN5043(RJ45) accepts 9-36 V DC, which covers both 12 V light vehicle and 24 V heavy vehicle systems natively. No DC-DC converter or additional power conditioning is required. Connect via a fused, dedicated supply line rather than tapping an existing accessory circuit to avoid issues from voltage spikes during engine start on diesel vehicles. -
Does this NVR include 4G and Wi-Fi out of the box?
No. The 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity modules are pluggable accessories and are not included in the base unit. The NVR is designed to accept them, but they must be sourced and fitted separately. Confirm compatible module availability before planning your installation if remote monitoring or depot sync is a requirement. -
Does this NVR come with a hard drive?
No. The AE-MN5043(RJ45) ships without any storage drive. It supports up to 2 HDDs or SSDs with a total capacity of up to 2TB. For vehicle installations subject to vibration - particularly off-road or heavy vehicles - an SSD is strongly preferred over a mechanical HDD, which is not designed for continuous vibration. -
How many cameras can I connect, and what resolution do they support?
4 cameras maximum. The unit has 4 PoE RJ45 ports, each supporting IP cameras up to 5MP resolution. H.265 compression is supported, which reduces the storage and bandwidth demand of 5MP streams considerably compared to H.264 - relevant when you are limited to a 2TB storage ceiling or a constrained 4G data plan. -
Will this NVR protect recordings if the vehicle power is cut suddenly?
Yes. A built-in super-capacitor and shutdown delay are specifically designed to handle sudden power loss. When vehicle power is interrupted - such as when a truck is shut down at a delivery point - the shutdown delay allows the NVR to close files and write buffers to disk correctly before powering off, reducing the risk of corrupted recordings. -
Can I monitor vehicles remotely using this NVR?
Yes, provided a 4G module is fitted and active. The AE-MN5043(RJ45) supports remote access via web browser, allowing operators to view live footage from vehicles while they are in transit. Without the 4G module, remote access is only available when the vehicle is connected to a Wi-Fi network - such as at a depot. -
What does the built-in GPS actually record?
The GPS module logs vehicle position and route data and links it to the video recording. This produces a time-stamped location record alongside the footage from all 4 cameras - useful for incident investigation, driver behaviour review, route compliance auditing, and fleet management reporting. The GPS data is stored on the same drive as the video. The AE-MN5043(RJ45) is part of the Security Australia mobile NVR range and is suited to any application where location context is required alongside camera evidence. -
Is this NVR suitable for use in extreme heat, such as in outback Australia?
Yes. The operating temperature range is -20 °C to 70 °C. An aluminium chassis with aviation-grade connectors is used rather than a plastic enclosure, which assists heat dissipation in high-ambient-temperature environments. At 70 °C upper limit, the unit covers the internal temperature of a parked vehicle in direct sun in most Australian conditions, though confirming actual internal vehicle temperatures at your install location is advisable.
