Product Overview

Model: DS-2CD2386G2-I

Who This Is For

When false alarm fatigue is the priority problem to solve, the Hikvision DS-2CD2386G2-I is the turret camera most installers reach for. Built around Hikvision's AcuSense deep learning engine, it distinguishes human and vehicle targets from general motion - animals, foliage, weather - so NVR alerts and push notifications only trigger when they should. The 8MP 4K sensor resolves fine detail across wide outdoor angles, and the DarkFighter-class minimum illumination of 0.003 Lux means usable colour images before the IR even kicks in. At 30 m of IR range, this is a compact-site camera: residential eaves, small business carparks, school entry points, and strata common areas where you need genuine identification quality without overshooting the scene. The pan/tilt/rotate mount adjustment gives installers full 360-degree repositioning flexibility after the housing is fixed, which cuts rework on awkward soffit and corner positions.

What This Camera Actually Does

AcuSense Human & Vehicle Classification

Deep learning runs on-camera to separate human and vehicle movement from irrelevant motion sources. The NVR only logs and alerts on classified targets, which directly reduces the number of events an operator or homeowner needs to review each day.

8MP 4K Resolution

3840 x 2160 pixels on a 1/1.8" progressive scan CMOS sensor means a single camera covers a wider area without losing face or plate detail. Useful for entries and carparks where you cannot position multiple cameras across the same zone.

DarkFighter Low-Light Performance

Minimum illumination of 0.003 Lux at F1.6 delivers colour images in near-dark conditions before switching to IR monochrome. For driveways with minimal external lighting, this extends usable colour detail well into the evening without adding supplementary lights.

120 dB Wide Dynamic Range

120 dB WDR handles strong backlighting - morning sun behind a front door, a vehicle's headlights facing the camera - without washing out faces or shadow detail. Critical for entries that face east or sit opposite reflective surfaces.

H.265+ Compression

H.265+ reduces bitrate at 4K resolution substantially compared to H.264, which matters when calculating NVR storage for multi-camera systems. Longer continuous recording or smaller HDDs become achievable without dropping stream quality.

Full Pan/Tilt/Rotate Adjustment

360-degree pan, 75-degree tilt, and 360-degree rotation allow the lens to be aimed precisely after the housing is fixed. Installers can correct sight lines on corner mounts or sloped soffits without repositioning the junction box or back plate.

Who Buys This Model

  • Residential Installers: Fitting eave and soffit cameras at homes where the client has complained about constant motion alerts from passing cars or neighbourhood pets - AcuSense filters those out at the camera level.
  • Small Business Owners: Monitoring a carpark, shopfront, or rear loading area where 4K resolution provides the identification detail needed for incident review, and the IP67 rating handles year-round outdoor exposure.
  • Strata and Property Managers: Specifying cameras for common area entries and walkways where a clean turret profile, minimal false alarms, and broad operating temperature range (-40°C to 65°C) reduce ongoing maintenance calls.
  • Security Integrators Building Multi-Camera Systems: Selecting a 4K AcuSense turret as the standard outdoor camera across a site, knowing H.265+ compression keeps NVR storage requirements manageable across 8 or more channels.

Honest Assessment

The DS-2CD2386G2-I does two things well in combination: it delivers genuine 4K detail on a compact turret housing, and it keeps false alarm rates low through on-camera AcuSense classification. The 120 dB WDR and 0.003 Lux low-light performance are above average for this camera class, and the wide operating temperature range makes it suitable for installations across most Australian climates including extreme inland heat and alpine cold. H.265+ keeps storage costs in check at 4K, which is a practical advantage in multi-camera systems available through Security Australia. Where this camera has limits: the 30 m IR range suits close-to-mid-range monitoring but is not designed for long approaches, large perimeters, or wide open areas where a bullet camera with extended IR would serve better. There is no built-in microphone, so audio capture or two-way communication requires a separate device or audio-capable NVR input.

Before You Buy

Installer Note: This camera ships in both 2.8 mm and 4 mm fixed lens variants - confirm the correct lens before ordering. The 2.8 mm gives a 111-degree horizontal field of view, suited to wide entries and carparks; the 4 mm gives 87 degrees and is better for corridors or focused approaches. The IR range is rated to 30 m on either lens, but real-world effective illumination will be lower in areas with high ambient light wash. PoE 802.3af is supported, so standard PoE switches and NVR PoE ports will power this camera without requiring PoE+.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are mounting to an eave or soffit covering a driveway, entry path, or small carpark out to roughly 20-25 m, and the client needs AcuSense-filtered alerts to reduce notification fatigue.
  • Good match if: The installation faces a backlit scene - east-facing entries, garage doors, or areas with vehicle headlights - where the 120 dB WDR will prevent the exposure problems that standard cameras struggle with in those conditions.
  • You may need a different model if: The monitored area is a long open driveway, a large perimeter fence line, or an industrial approach beyond 40 m - a bullet camera with extended IR range would provide better illumination depth and visible deterrence for those environments.

Real-World Scenarios

Residential Front Entry

Mounted under an eave above a front door, the 2.8 mm lens covers the full driveway width and pathway. AcuSense sends alerts only when a person or vehicle is detected - passing cats or swaying trees no longer generate notifications at 2 am.

Retail Carpark Entry Lane

A 4 mm lens version mounted on a carpark entry canopy captures the full vehicle and driver at the boom gate. The 120 dB WDR handles headlights from vehicles entering at night without blowing out faces or plates in the frame.

Strata Common Area Corridor

Installed on a covered external walkway between apartment buildings, the IP67-rated housing handles rain exposure from open sides. The 4K resolution gives the body corporate committee identifiable footage of individuals in a zone that is difficult to light consistently.

School Entry and Drop-Off Zone

Mounted on a covered outdoor walkway near the main gate, 4K resolution allows staff to zoom in on recorded footage and clearly identify individuals without a second camera. AcuSense vehicle classification logs every car arrival and departure automatically.

Small Business After-Hours Monitoring

A cafe or retail shop with a rear laneway mounts this camera on the back wall covering the service entry. DarkFighter low-light performance captures usable colour footage in the poorly lit laneway, with IR taking over in complete darkness without any supplementary lighting cost.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need 4K resolution and AcuSense human/vehicle filtering in a compact turret housing for eave, soffit, or wall mounting at ranges up to 30 m.
  • You may need a different model if: The monitored zone extends beyond 40 m, runs along a fence line, or is a wide open industrial perimeter - a bullet-style camera with a longer IR range and visible deterrence profile would be more appropriate for those environments.
  • Pairs well with: A Hikvision AcuSense-compatible NVR that processes the camera's human/vehicle metadata for smart search and AI event recording - this unlocks filtered playback and reduces manual review time significantly.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera support PoE, or does it need a separate power supply?

Yes. The DS-2CD2386G2-I supports IEEE 802.3af PoE, so a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera. Standard PoE switches and most PoE NVR ports will run it without requiring PoE+ (802.3at). A 12 VDC supply is also supported if PoE is not available at the installation point.
  2. Will this camera work for two-way audio or intercom-style communication?

No. This model does not include a built-in microphone or speaker. There is no two-way audio capability on this unit. If audio capture or remote communication is required, a separate audio input device connected to a compatible NVR, or a different camera model with built-in audio hardware, would be needed.
  3. How does AcuSense actually reduce false alarms - what does it detect and what does it ignore?

AcuSense uses a deep learning algorithm running on the camera's processor to classify motion events into human, vehicle, or other categories in real time. Events classified as "other" - which includes animals, vegetation movement, rain, and insects near the lens - can be filtered out of alerts and NVR event logs entirely. Only human and vehicle detections trigger configured notifications. The classification happens on-camera before data is sent to the NVR, so it does not depend on the recorder's processing power. To get the most from this feature, AcuSense-compatible NVRs should be used so the classification metadata is stored and searchable in recorded footage.
  4. What is the practical difference between the 2.8 mm and 4 mm lens variants for an outdoor installation?

The 2.8 mm lens gives a 111-degree horizontal field of view - wide enough to cover a full driveway, carpark bay row, or building entry from a corner position. The 4 mm lens narrows to 87 degrees horizontal, which suits a more focused approach corridor, gate entry, or pedestrian path where you want more detail at the centre of the frame and less wide-angle distortion at the edges. Both lenses have the same 30 m IR range and identical image sensor. The choice comes down to how wide the scene is and how much detail you need at the far end.
  5. Does this camera work in extreme Australian heat?

Yes. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 65°C, which covers extreme inland summer temperatures including roof-level installations in Queensland and Western Australia where surface temperatures regularly exceed ambient air temperature. The IP67 housing also protects against dust ingress, which matters in dry regional environments. Security Australia stocks this model for installations across all Australian climate zones.
  6. How does 120 dB WDR affect image quality in real installations?

120 dB Wide Dynamic Range means the camera simultaneously exposes for both the bright and dark areas of the frame. In practice, this prevents two common problems: a face appearing as a silhouette when the person is standing in front of a bright window or doorway, and a scene going completely white when a vehicle headlight faces the camera at night. Standard cameras with WDR below 100 dB will typically fail in one of these two scenarios depending on the exposure setting chosen.
  7. How much storage does a 4K camera at H.265+ require on an NVR?

At 4K resolution with H.265+ compression, typical bitrate for this camera in a normal outdoor scene runs between 4 Mbps and 8 Mbps depending on scene complexity and configured quality settings. At 6 Mbps average, a single camera recording continuously for 24 hours uses roughly 65 GB per day. An 8-camera system at similar settings would consume approximately 520 GB per day, meaning a 4 TB HDD provides around 7-8 days of continuous recording before overwriting. Using AcuSense event-only recording instead of continuous recording reduces storage use substantially.
