Product Overview
Model: DS-7732NI-M4/16P
Who This Is For
For integrators and facilities managers who need a single recorder to anchor a large-scale IP camera network, the Hikvision DS-7732NI-M4/16P delivers 32 channels, native 8K recording capability, and 16 built-in PoE ports in a 1.5RU chassis. This is the recorder specifiers reach for when a site outgrows 16-channel hardware but still needs clean rack installation - think multi-level commercial buildings, manufacturing floors, education campuses, or retail centres with 20 or more camera positions. The 16 PoE ports cover a significant portion of the camera count directly from the NVR, reducing switch infrastructure for smaller deployments, while the 4-bay storage design and 320 Mbps incoming bandwidth give headroom for high-resolution streams across the full channel count. The included 4TB pre-installed provides a working starting point, with room to expand storage across the remaining bays as the site grows.
What This NVR Actually Does
32-Channel 8K Recording
Records up to 32 MP resolution per channel, supporting the latest generation of ultra-high-definition IP cameras. When ultra HD mode is enabled, up to 8 channels can run at full 32 MP or 24 MP simultaneously, making it future-ready for high-detail coverage zones like entry points or cashier areas.
16 Built-In PoE Ports
Powers and connects up to 16 IP cameras directly from the NVR using a single Cat cable per camera. The 200W shared PoE budget means you can run a full row of standard cameras without a separate PoE switch, simplifying both the rack layout and ongoing maintenance.
Dual HDMI Outputs
HDMI 1 supports up to 8K (7680x4320) at 30Hz, while HDMI 2 supports up to 4K at 60Hz independently. This enables a large-format main display alongside a secondary operator monitor without splitting the signal externally. A VGA output adds a third display option for legacy monitors.
H.265+ Compression
H.265+ reduces storage and bandwidth consumption compared to standard H.264 while preserving recording quality. Across 32 channels of continuous high-resolution footage, the difference in storage footprint is significant - directly affecting how many days of footage fit across the 4 HDD bays before overwriting begins.
16-Channel Synchronous Playback
Review footage from up to 16 cameras simultaneously on a single timeline, which is practical for incident investigation where you need to correlate movement across multiple zones at once. This removes the need to scrub through individual channels one at a time when reconstructing an event.
VCA Analytics and Remote Access
Supports video content analytics including line crossing, intrusion detection, motion detection, and heat mapping at the recorder level. TLS encryption protects data in transit, and Hik-Connect integration provides remote live view and playback from mobile devices for authorised users across up to 128 remote connections.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial Integrators: Specifying a recorder for retail centres, commercial office buildings, or multi-tenancy sites where 20-32 camera positions are common and 8K-capable infrastructure is required to support next-generation camera upgrades.
- Education and Campus Facilities Teams: Schools and universities running centralised surveillance rooms who need 16-channel synchronous playback for incident review and a recorder that can handle high camera counts from a single 1.5RU unit.
- Industrial and Warehouse Operators: Sites with both indoor and outdoor camera runs where the 16 onboard PoE ports handle the core camera count and RS-485/RS-232 ports support additional peripheral integration such as PTZ cameras or access control devices.
- Security Consultants Planning Expandable Systems: The 4-bay HDD design with 4TB pre-installed allows a working day-one system with clear storage expansion planned around channel count and retention requirements as the site's camera count grows.
Honest Assessment
The DS-7732NI-M4/16P performs well as a high-channel-count recorder where bandwidth headroom matters. The 320 Mbps incoming bandwidth is genuinely sufficient for mixed-resolution deployments across all 32 channels without throttling, and the dual HDMI outputs with independent resolution options give installers real flexibility for multi-monitor control room layouts. The 16 PoE ports covering half the total channel count is a practical advantage for mid-size commercial sites where simplifying switch infrastructure reduces both cost and points of failure. H.265+ compression meaningfully extends usable retention across the 4-bay storage pool. Where this NVR reaches its limits: the 200W shared PoE budget requires careful planning if cameras with higher power draw - such as PTZ units or multi-sensor models - are included in the mix. The 4TB pre-installed is a starting point only; for 32 channels at high resolution with meaningful retention, additional drives should be budgeted at the time of installation. Available through Security Australia with full Hikvision warranty support.
Before You Buy
PoE Budget Planning: The DS-7732NI-M4/16P shares 200W across all 16 PoE ports. Standard IP dome and bullet cameras typically draw 7-13W each, so 16 cameras at average draw sits comfortably within budget. However, if any of your 16 PoE-connected cameras are PoE+ devices (PTZ cameras, multi-sensor units, or illuminated bullet cameras), verify their individual wattage against the 200W total before finalising your design. Cameras beyond the 16 PoE ports require an external PoE switch.
8K Output Constraint: When HDMI 1 is set to 8K output resolution, HDMI 2 is limited to a maximum of 1080p. If your control room requires 2 high-resolution displays running simultaneously, set HDMI 1 to 4K at 60Hz to allow HDMI 2 to also run at up to 4K. Confirm your monitor and cabling (HDMI 2.1 for 8K) before commissioning the display layout.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying 17-32 IP cameras on a commercial or industrial site and need a single rack-mount NVR with onboard PoE for at least half the camera count, supported by 320 Mbps incoming bandwidth to handle simultaneous high-resolution streams without degradation.
- Good match if: Your site requires a dual-display control room setup with one screen running 8K or 4K and a second independent monitor for operators, using the dual HDMI outputs with independent resolution settings.
- You may need a different model if: Your deployment is under 16 cameras - a 16-channel NVR will provide the same PoE port coverage at lower cost and with a smaller storage footprint; check the NVR range on securityaustralia.com.au for the right channel count.

Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a 32-channel recorder with native 8K output, 16 onboard PoE ports, and 4-bay expandable storage in a single 1.5RU rack unit - particularly where half or more of the camera count can connect directly to the NVR without an external switch.
- You may need a different model if: Your site exceeds 32 cameras or requires more than 16 PoE ports from a single unit - a higher-channel NVR or a dedicated PoE switch paired with a non-PoE recorder will give you more design flexibility; check the full NVR and switching range on securityaustralia.com.au.
- Pairs well with: 4K and 8MP IP dome or turret cameras on the PoE ports, a dedicated PTZ camera via RS-485 for wide-area coverage, and a rack-mount UPS to protect the NVR and PoE budget during power fluctuations.
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR support cameras from other brands, or only Hikvision?
It works with Hikvision cameras natively and also supports third-party ONVIF-compliant IP cameras, though advanced features such as VCA analytics and smart event triggers typically require Hikvision cameras to function fully. For installations mixing brands, confirm ONVIF Profile S compatibility with your camera supplier before finalising the design. -
Will all 32 channels record at 8K simultaneously?
No. When ultra HD resolution mode is enabled, the NVR supports up to 8 channels at 32 MP or 24 MP. Across the full 32 channels, the decoding capability is rated at 20-ch at 4 MP (30fps) or 40-ch at 1080p (30fps), so mixed-resolution deployments are the practical norm. Plan your highest-resolution camera positions - entry points, cashier areas, loading zones - to use those dedicated high-resolution decode slots. -
How much storage do I actually need beyond the included 4TB?
The 4TB pre-installed is a working baseline, but is not sufficient for a full 32-channel deployment at high resolution with extended retention. As a rough guide, 32 channels of 4 MP cameras recording continuously in H.265+ will consume approximately 3-4TB per day depending on scene complexity. The 4-bay design allows you to add up to 3 additional drives; the total usable storage capacity depends on the HDD sizes you install. Calculate your required retention period before purchase and budget additional drives accordingly. -
Can I connect a PTZ camera to this NVR and control it from the interface?
Yes. The DS-7732NI-M4/16P includes RS-485 and RS-232 ports for PTZ camera control, in addition to IP-based PTZ control via the network. PTZ cameras connected to the PoE ports or via network switch can be controlled directly through the NVR interface or via the Hik-Connect app. If the PTZ is a PoE+ device, verify its individual power draw against the 200W shared PoE budget. -
What does the 320 Mbps incoming bandwidth limit mean in practice?
It defines the maximum total data the NVR can receive across all camera streams simultaneously. At 320 Mbps, a 32-channel system running each camera at 10 Mbps per stream sits at the limit. In practice, H.265+ cameras at 4-8 MP resolution typically stream at 3-6 Mbps per camera in normal conditions, leaving adequate headroom for the full 32-channel count. Cameras with high motion scenes or set to high bitrate modes will consume more; monitor total incoming bandwidth during commissioning. -
Does this NVR support RAID or HDD redundancy?
The confirmed specification lists 4 HDD bays and supports dual-stream recording, but RAID configuration support is not confirmed in the available specification data. If HDD redundancy is a firm requirement for your site, verify RAID support directly with Security Australia before purchasing, or consider supplementing with a network-attached storage device for secondary backup. -
How does the 200W PoE budget work across 16 ports, and what happens if I exceed it?
The 200W is shared dynamically across all 16 ports. Each port can deliver up to the IEEE 802.3af/at standard depending on the NVR's PoE specification, but the total draw across all connected cameras cannot exceed 200W simultaneously. If the combined load approaches or exceeds the budget, the NVR will typically prioritise ports in order - lower-numbered ports receive priority - and cameras on higher-numbered ports may lose power. When designing the layout, leave a buffer of 15-20% below the 200W ceiling to account for camera startup surges.
