Product Overview
Model: DH-HAC-HDW2501TP-Z-A-DP-27135-S2
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying HDCVI upgrades where existing coaxial cabling is already in place will find the Dahua 5MP Starlight Pro VF HDCVI IR Eyeball a capable and cost-effective fit. This camera is built for sites that need to retain their coax infrastructure while stepping up to 5MP resolution and Starlight low-light performance - think car parks, retail back-of-house corridors, medium-sized warehouses, and external building perimeters where existing DVR systems are being upgraded rather than replaced. The motorized 2.7-13.5mm varifocal lens gives installers the flexibility to fine-tune field of view from the XVR menu without physically adjusting the lens barrel, which is a practical advantage when the camera is mounted at height. With 60m IR range, IP67 weather sealing, IK10 impact resistance, and both 12V DC and 24V AC power options, this model handles a variety of outdoor positions without requiring a network infrastructure change.
What This Camera Actually Does
Motorized Varifocal Lens
The 2.7-13.5mm motorized varifocal lens with autofocus lets installers adjust zoom and focus electronically via the connected XVR - no need to physically access the camera housing after mounting. This is particularly useful when the camera is installed at height or in awkward positions, saving time during commissioning and any future adjustments.
Starlight Low-Light Performance
With a minimum illumination of 0.001 Lux at F1.6, the Starlight sensor captures usable colour detail in near-darkness before switching to infrared. This matters in environments like underlit car parks or corridors where artificial lighting is minimal or inconsistent, and where standard cameras typically fall back to washed-out monochrome.
60m Smart IR Illumination
Two IR LEDs provide up to 60m of infrared illumination in complete darkness. Dahua's Smart IR technology automatically adjusts IR intensity as subjects move closer to the camera, preventing the overexposure that makes faces appear as white blobs in close-range shots.
120dB True WDR
True Wide Dynamic Range at 120dB handles scenes with extreme contrast - for example, a doorway where bright sunlight floods in from outside while the interior remains dark. The camera processes both bright and shadowed areas simultaneously so detail is retained across the full frame, not just one exposure zone.
HDCVI Coax Transmission
HDCVI technology transmits 5MP video, audio, data, and power over a single coaxial cable - up to 700m for 5MP HD video. This makes it suitable for sites where coax is already installed and a full IP network migration is not warranted, avoiding costly cabling replacement while still achieving high-definition output.
IK10 Vandal Resistance & IP67 Protection
The IK10 rating means the housing can withstand a 5kg impact dropped from 40cm - relevant for external mounting points that are accessible to the public. IP67 sealing ensures full dust ingress protection and resistance to water immersion up to 1 metre, making this camera suitable for exposed outdoor positions.
Who Buys This Model
- Security integrators upgrading analog DVR systems: Sites with existing RG59 or RG6 coaxial cable infrastructure that need a resolution bump to 5MP without replacing cabling or switching to IP - this camera drops in using the existing coax runs and connects to a compatible HDCVI XVR.
- Commercial property managers with varied mounting positions: The motorized varifocal lens makes this a practical choice for locations where the exact field of view cannot be confirmed until after the camera is mounted - warehouse aisles, retail stockrooms, and external loading areas where angles may need tuning post-installation.
- Installers specifying external building perimeter coverage: IP67 and IK10 ratings, 60m IR range, and 4kV lightning protection make this appropriate for exposed eave or external wall positions at commercial and light industrial sites where weathering and impact risk are both factors.
- Sites needing audio alongside video on coax: The built-in microphone transmits audio over the coaxial cable to the XVR - useful for reception desks, access points, or internal corridors where audio capture adds evidentiary value without requiring separate audio cabling.
Honest Assessment
The Dahua 5MP Starlight Pro VF HDCVI IR Eyeball does its core job well: 5MP resolution over coax, a motorized varifocal lens that removes the need to manually adjust focus at height, and Starlight low-light capability that outperforms standard HDCVI cameras in dimly lit environments. The 120dB WDR handles high-contrast entrances capably, and the IK10/IP67 rating gives it genuine durability credentials for external use. The HDCVI format is its defining advantage in upgrade scenarios - existing coax runs are preserved, which significantly reduces installation cost compared to a full IP network migration. What it will not do: this is not an IP camera, so it does not support onboard AI analytics, edge storage, remote access without a compatible XVR, or PoE switch connectivity. If your site has no existing coax and you are building a new system, an IP turret camera with network connectivity will give you more flexibility. Available through Security Australia as part of the Dahua HDCVI range.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: This camera requires a Dahua HDCVI-compatible XVR that supports 5MP HDCVI input - not all older XVRs do. Confirm your recorder supports 5MP HDCVI mode before ordering. The motorized varifocal lens is adjusted via the XVR OSD menu (using the coax data channel), not via a physical adjustment ring, so ensure your XVR supports lens control over coax for this model. Power input is 12V DC or 24V AC; the camera also supports PoC (Power over Coax) where the XVR provides PoC output - verify your XVR has this capability if you intend to use PoC rather than a local power supply.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are upgrading an existing HDCVI or analog DVR system with coaxial cable already in place and want 5MP resolution and low-light Starlight performance without rewiring the site.
- Good match if: You need to fine-tune field of view after mounting - the motorized 2.7-13.5mm varifocal with autofocus means angle and focus adjustments are made via the XVR, not by physically accessing the camera on the wall or ceiling.
- You may need a different model if: You are installing a new system from scratch with no existing coax - an IP turret or eyeball camera on a PoE network will give you greater flexibility for remote access, AI analytics, and future expansion without being tied to coaxial infrastructure.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You are working with an existing HDCVI DVR system and coaxial cable infrastructure, and want 5MP resolution, Starlight low-light performance, and a motorized varifocal lens without migrating to an IP network.
- You may need a different model if: You are designing a new-build system with no existing coax - a PoE IP turret or eyeball camera will provide greater flexibility for remote access, AI-based analytics, and future system expansion over a Cat6 network.
- Pairs well with: A Dahua HDCVI XVR supporting 5MP HDCVI input, PoC output, and motorized lens control over coax via OSD.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera work with my existing analog CCTV DVR?
Not necessarily. This camera outputs HDCVI (5MP) natively, and also supports AHD, TVI, and CVBS switchable modes. If your existing DVR accepts one of these formats and supports 5MP input, it may be compatible. However, most older analog DVRs only support CVBS at standard definition - in that mode you lose the 5MP resolution advantage. A Dahua HDCVI-compatible XVR supporting 5MP is strongly recommended to get full performance from this camera. -
How does the motorized varifocal lens work on this camera - do I need to adjust it manually?
No manual lens adjustment is required at the camera. The 2.7-13.5mm motorized varifocal lens is controlled remotely via the connected HDCVI XVR through the OSD (on-screen display) menu. The XVR sends control signals over the coaxial cable data channel to move the lens between wide (113° horizontal) and narrow (31.4° horizontal) positions and trigger autofocus. This means zoom and focus can be set after the camera is mounted and sealed, saving time on high or awkward installations. -
Does this camera support Power over Coax (PoC)?
Yes. In addition to 12V DC and 24V AC, this camera supports PoC (Power over Coax), which allows the connected XVR to supply power directly over the coaxial cable - eliminating the need for a separate power supply at each camera position. Your XVR must have PoC output ports to use this feature; not all XVRs do, so confirm PoC support on your recorder before relying on this power method. -
What is the maximum cable run I can use with this camera?
Up to 700m for 5MP HD video over a standard coaxial cable, and up to 300m using UTP cable. These figures are based on Dahua lab testing. Real-world performance may vary depending on cable quality, connectors, and interference. For runs approaching these limits, use good-quality RG59 or RG6 coax with correctly terminated BNC connectors to minimise signal degradation. -
Does this camera support two-way audio?
No. This camera has a built-in microphone for audio capture only - there is no built-in speaker. Audio is transmitted over the coaxial cable to the XVR for recording alongside video. If two-way audio communication is required at a camera position, a separate intercom device or a camera model with both a built-in speaker and microphone would be needed. -
What do the DORI distances mean for this camera in practice?
DORI stands for Detect, Observe, Recognise, Identify - four standardised distance thresholds for what a camera can usefully capture at a given focal length. At 2.7mm (widest), this camera can detect a person at 64m, observe at 25.6m, recognise at 12.8m, and identify at 6.4m. At 13.5mm (narrowest/most zoomed), those distances extend to 210m detect, 84m observe, 42m recognise, and 21m identify. For face identification in evidentiary footage, the camera needs to be deployed so the subject is within the identify distance for your chosen focal length. Stocked by Security Australia as part of the Dahua HDCVI camera range. -
Will this camera work in completely dark conditions?
Yes. The 2 x IR LEDs provide up to 60m of infrared illumination, and minimum illumination drops to 0 Lux with IR active. In complete darkness the camera switches to black-and-white infrared mode. Dahua's Smart IR adjusts LED intensity automatically as subjects move closer, preventing overexposure at short range - a common issue where faces appear as white silhouettes on lesser cameras.
