Product Overview

Model: DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ

Who This Is For

When managing a large-scale surveillance deployment across a commercial campus, multi-building facility, or critical infrastructure site is the priority, the DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ is built to handle the workload. This 64-channel WizSense NVR supports up to 8 HDDs with RAID redundancy, 384 Mbps of total bandwidth, and on-board AI processing for face detection and recognition, perimeter protection, and Smart Motion Detection - without relying entirely on camera-side processing. It is targeted at security integrators and IT managers who need a rack-mounted recorder that can accept AI data streams from up to 16 camera channels simultaneously while also running recorder-level AI on an additional pool of cameras. The 2U form factor fits standard 19-inch rack enclosures, making it practical for server room deployments where space and cable management matter. This is a recorder for professionals specifying enterprise-grade systems, not a unit for small or single-site installations.

What This NVR Actually Does

Dual-Mode AI Processing

The NVR runs AI both at the recorder level and by passthrough from AI-capable cameras. Face detection runs on 2 channels by recorder and up to 16 channels by camera, letting you mix standard and AI cameras across the same system without losing analytics coverage.

Face Recognition with Database Management

Stores up to 20,000 face images across 20 separate databases with a 2.5 GB total capacity. Each record supports name, gender, date of birth, address, credential type, and country fields - making it usable for access audit trails, watchlist matching, and staff verification scenarios.

Perimeter Protection with False Alarm Filtering

Processes 4 channels of perimeter protection at the recorder level with up to 10 IVS rules per channel. Secondary target classification filters alarms caused by animals, foliage movement, and lighting changes before they reach the operator, reducing nuisance events in outdoor zones.

SMD Plus Motion Classification

Runs Smart Motion Detection Plus across 8 channels at the recorder level - classifying motion events as human or motor vehicle rather than triggering on any movement. This directly reduces alarm fatigue on systems covering large open areas, car parks, and perimeter fencing.

RAID Storage with 8-HDD Capacity

Supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 configurations across up to 8 installed HDDs. RAID 5 or 6 protects recorded footage against single or dual drive failures - a mandatory consideration for enterprise deployments where footage continuity and chain-of-evidence integrity are required.

384 Mbps Total Bandwidth

The 384 Mbps incoming, recording, and outgoing bandwidth ceiling supports high-resolution streams from 64 cameras simultaneously. At 4K resolution with H.265+ compression, this headroom is sufficient for mixed deployments combining 4K, 1080p, and lower-resolution channels without bottlenecking.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Integrators on Enterprise Contracts: Specifying a 64-channel rack recorder with RAID and on-board AI for commercial campuses, government facilities, or multi-tenancy buildings where a single NVR needs to manage a high camera count with analytics across mixed camera types.
  • Facilities Managers at Manufacturing or Logistics Sites: Using the ANPR and vehicle metadata passthrough from AI cameras to log vehicle movements at entry and exit points, supplemented by perimeter protection rules on fencing and loading dock approaches.
  • Retail Loss Prevention Managers: Deploying the face recognition database alongside existing access control to identify repeat offenders or flag watchlisted individuals across multi-store networks feeding into a centralised server room installation.
  • IT and Physical Security Teams at Institutional Sites: Schools, hospitals, and aged care facilities requiring people counting, crowd distribution data, and heat map analytics - all processed through camera-side AI and aggregated at the recorder for reporting and compliance.
  • System Designers Specifying Scalable Infrastructure: Planners who need a recorder that handles both AI-by-recorder channels and AI-by-camera passthrough within the same system, allowing the camera mix to evolve over time without replacing the head-end.

Honest Assessment

The DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ handles a genuinely large channel count - 64 cameras - with meaningful on-board AI rather than marketing-only analytics. The face recognition database at 20,000 images, combined with RAID 5 and 6 support, positions this as a unit suited to environments where both forensic retrieval and storage resilience are operational requirements. The 384 Mbps bandwidth ceiling and H.265+ compression keep large deployments manageable without requiring exotic networking infrastructure. Available through Security Australia, this recorder is well-suited to integrators who are already specifying Dahua WizSense cameras, since the AI-by-camera passthrough reaches its full potential only with compatible camera hardware. It will not function as a standalone analytics appliance - the recorder-level AI channels are limited to 2 for face detection and 4 for perimeter protection, meaning heavy AI workloads above those thresholds depend on the cameras themselves. For deployments requiring more than 64 channels or centralised multi-site management at scale, a higher-tier or server-based VMS approach would be more appropriate.

Before You Buy

AI Channel Allocation: The recorder-level AI is not unlimited - face detection by recorder covers only 2 channels and perimeter protection by recorder covers only 4 channels. If your design requires AI analytics on more channels than these limits, the additional cameras must be WizSense or AI-capable models that handle processing on-device and pass the metadata stream to the NVR. Plan your camera selection against these channel caps before finalising the bill of materials, especially on larger multi-zone deployments.

RAID Configuration and HDD Selection: This unit supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 across up to 8 HDDs, but HDDs are not included. For RAID 5 or 6, you need a minimum of 3 or 4 drives respectively, and all drives should be matched surveillance-grade models. Mismatched HDD capacities or consumer-grade drives can affect RAID rebuild times and long-term reliability in continuous-write environments. Confirm your HDD specification matches the RAID mode you intend to configure before installation.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are specifying a 64-channel rack-mount system where some cameras are standard IP models and others are AI-capable WizSense units - the dual AI mode (by recorder and by camera) handles both within the same system without requiring two separate recorders.
  • Good match if: The site requires storage redundancy through RAID and you need face recognition capability with a structured database - the 20,000-image face database with RAID 5 or 6 protection meets both requirements in a single 2U unit.
  • You may need a different model if: Your deployment exceeds 64 channels or requires centralised management across multiple geographically separate sites - a server-based VMS platform or higher-channel NVR series would be more appropriate, and Security Australia's NVR range includes options worth reviewing at those scales.

Real-World Scenarios

Hospital Campus - Mixed Camera Fleet

A large hospital runs 40 standard IP cameras and 24 WizSense AI cameras. The NVR handles SMD Plus and perimeter protection on recorder-level channels for the standard cameras, while AI-capable cameras pass face detection and people counting metadata through their own channels - all managed from one 2U unit.

Retail Chain - Watchlist Management

A retail loss prevention team loads 500 flagged face images into the recognition database, split across 3 watchlist databases. When a listed individual enters through a camera zone, the NVR triggers an alert within seconds using the 16-face-images-per-second recognition throughput from AI-by-camera channels.

Logistics Facility - Vehicle and Perimeter Monitoring

An interstate freight depot uses ANPR cameras at 3 gates, with vehicle metadata passed through the NVR's AI-by-camera channels. The perimeter fence line uses 4 recorder-level perimeter protection channels with tripwire and intrusion rules, covering the full boundary without requiring AI cameras throughout.

Education Campus - Storage Continuity

A university installs 6 x matched surveillance HDDs in RAID 6 configuration, allowing 2 simultaneous drive failures without data loss. Combined with people counting and crowd distribution analytics from AI cameras across multiple buildings, this provides both recording resilience and occupancy data for facility management.

Government Building - Forensic Search

Following a security incident, investigators use the WizSense intelligent search functions to query recorded footage by face attributes - age group, gender, or mask status - across the 64-channel archive. Rather than reviewing hours of footage, targeted retrieval isolates relevant clips within minutes using the on-board metadata index.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a 64-channel rack recorder with on-board face recognition, RAID storage redundancy, and the ability to process AI analytics from both standard and AI-capable cameras within the same system - without requiring a server-based VMS.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 64 channels, multi-site centralised management, or AI analytics on a significantly larger channel pool than the recorder-level limits allow - a server-based or higher-tier NVR platform would serve those requirements better.
  • Pairs well with: Dahua WizSense IP cameras (for AI-by-camera passthrough analytics), surveillance-grade matched HDDs in the required quantity for your chosen RAID configuration, and a managed PoE switch suited to 64-channel network loads.

Common Questions

  1. Does the DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ require all 64 cameras to be AI-capable for the analytics to work?

No. The NVR runs AI analytics in 2 distinct modes, so AI cameras are not required across the board. Recorder-level AI covers 2 channels for face detection, 4 channels for perimeter protection, and 8 channels for SMD Plus - these work with any compatible IP camera. AI-capable WizSense cameras add up to 16 additional channels of analytics by processing on-device and passing the metadata stream to the recorder. A mixed fleet of standard and AI cameras is a supported and common deployment approach.
  2. How does the face recognition database work on this NVR and what information can be stored?

The face recognition database holds up to 20,000 images across 20 separate databases with a total 2.5 GB capacity. Each face record can include name, gender, date of birth, address, credential type, credential number, country, and region fields. Recognition performance depends on processing mode: using 16 AI-by-camera channels processing face detection on-device delivers up to 16 face images per second to the recorder for matching; using 2 recorder-level channels for both detection and recognition delivers up to 12 face images per second. Face attributes captured include gender, age group, glasses, expressions, face mask, and beard.
  3. Will this NVR work with ANPR cameras for vehicle number plate recognition?

Yes, but only when paired with compatible ANPR-capable cameras. The DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ supports ANPR as an AI-by-camera function, meaning the camera performs the number plate recognition on-device and passes the data to the NVR for logging, search, and blocklist or allowlist matching. The recorder itself does not perform ANPR processing - the camera hardware and lens specification determine ANPR range and accuracy. Confirm that any ANPR cameras selected are Dahua WizSense compatible and configured for the required approach speed and lane setup.
  4. What RAID modes are supported and how many HDDs are needed for each?

RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 are all supported across the 8 HDD bays. RAID 1 requires 2 matched drives and mirrors data for single-drive failure protection. RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives and tolerates 1 drive failure. RAID 6 requires a minimum of 4 drives and tolerates 2 simultaneous drive failures - the recommended mode for sites with chain-of-evidence or compliance recording requirements. RAID 10 requires a minimum of 4 drives in matched pairs. HDDs are not included and should be matched surveillance-grade models. Security Australia can advise on compatible HDD specifications for the RAID mode you intend to configure.
  5. What is the maximum bandwidth and does it support 4K recording across all 64 channels?

The maximum bandwidth is 384 Mbps across incoming, recording, and outgoing streams combined. Whether 4K recording is sustained across all 64 channels simultaneously depends on the bitrate per camera. With H.265+ compression, a typical 4K camera stream runs at roughly 4-8 Mbps per channel. At 64 channels, that places total incoming load at 256-512 Mbps - meaning 4K on all 64 channels simultaneously may approach or exceed the bandwidth ceiling depending on compression settings. In practice, mixed deployments combining 4K on critical positions and 1080p elsewhere will comfortably stay within the 384 Mbps limit.
  6. How does the AI-by-recorder perimeter protection differ from perimeter protection handled by the camera?

The 2 modes have different channel limits and processing locations. AI-by-recorder perimeter protection covers 4 channels, with each channel supporting up to 10 IVS rules - this works with any compatible IP camera regardless of whether it has on-board AI. The recorder performs secondary target classification to filter false alarms caused by animals, foliage, and lighting changes. AI-by-camera perimeter protection covers up to 16 channels and requires WizSense or equivalent AI cameras that process the classification on-device. Camera-side processing reduces the data and processing load on the recorder, making it more scalable for larger deployments, but it requires the upfront investment in AI-capable camera hardware.
  7. Does this NVR support remote access and how is it managed?

Yes. The DHI-NVR5864-AI/ANZ supports remote access and management through a web interface in addition to local GUI operation at the unit. Network management functions allow configuration, live view, and playback remotely. The unit operates on Embedded Linux with Security Baseline 2.3, which includes cybersecurity protections against unauthorised access. For installations requiring secure remote access, network segmentation and VPN access to the NVR's network interface are recommended practices rather than direct port forwarding.
