Product Overview
Model: DHI-NVR4216-16P-4KS2
Who This Is For
For installers and integrators who need a straightforward 16-channel PoE NVR that handles 4K recording without the complexity or cost of a full enterprise unit, the Dahua NVR4216-16P-4KS2 is built around that brief. It ships with 16 built-in PoE ports, which means a single unit can power and connect a full camera deployment using only Cat5e or Cat6 cable runs - no separate PoE switch required. The 1U rack-mountable form factor fits standard comms cabinets, and the H.265 codec keeps storage requirements manageable across all 16 channels. This unit suits small-to-medium commercial sites, multi-tenancy buildings, schools, and light industrial premises where a self-contained, all-in-one recording solution is the practical choice over a PC-based VMS setup.
What This NVR Actually Does
16 Built-In PoE Ports
Each of the 16 camera channels has a dedicated PoE port on the back of the unit. You run a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable per camera - no external switch, no separate power injectors. This cuts installation time and reduces the number of components in the cabinet significantly.
4K Recording and Playback
The NVR handles up to 8MP resolution on incoming streams and can decode up to 2 channels at 4K simultaneously. The HDMI output drives a 4K monitor at 3840x2160, so forensic review of high-resolution footage stays sharp on screen without downsampling.
H.265 Compression
H.265 encoding roughly halves the storage footprint compared to H.264 at equivalent quality. Across a 16-camera system running continuously, this makes a measurable difference to how far back your recordings go before the drives cycle over - directly affecting retention period without upgrading storage.
IVS Metadata Recording
When paired with IVS-capable Dahua cameras, the NVR records tripwire, intrusion, and abandoned object event metadata alongside the video. This means you can search and filter footage by event type rather than scrubbing manually through hours of recorded footage.
ANR - Automatic Network Replenishment
If a network link drops between a camera and the NVR, footage is stored locally on the camera's SD card. When the connection is restored, the NVR automatically retrieves and fills in the missing footage - closing the gap in the recorded timeline without manual intervention.
ONVIF 2.4 and Third-Party Compatibility
The NVR supports ONVIF 2.4 protocol and is compatible with third-party IP cameras including Axis, Sony, and Panasonic. This makes it a viable central recorder for mixed-brand sites or upgrades where existing cameras from other manufacturers need to be retained.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Installers on Commercial Projects: Fitting out retail premises, offices, or small industrial sites where a 16-channel all-in-one PoE recorder avoids the cost and cabinet space of a separate managed PoE switch.
- School and Campus Facility Managers: Deploying a self-contained recording unit with remote access via the Easy4ip app, allowing after-hours incident review without attending site or calling the installer.
- Multi-Tenancy Building Managers: Needing a single 1U unit that handles the full camera count in a standard comms rack, with HDMI 4K output for a dedicated monitoring screen at a reception or security desk.
- Integrators Inheriting Mixed-Brand Systems: Using the ONVIF 2.4 compatibility to bring existing third-party IP cameras onto a new recording platform without replacing functional hardware.
- IT Administrators Managing Bandwidth Budgets: Deploying H.265 cameras across a 16-channel system to keep the 200Mbps incoming bandwidth ceiling manageable and reduce NAS or HDD storage expenditure over a multi-year period.
Honest Assessment
The NVR4216-16P-4KS2 does the core job of a 16-channel PoE recorder well. The built-in PoE ports genuinely simplify installations - one cable per camera from cabinet to mounting point is a meaningful time saver on a 16-camera job. H.265 support keeps storage costs down, the 4K HDMI output is useful for sites that want a sharp monitoring display, and ONVIF compatibility is a practical plus for mixed-brand environments. ANR is a feature that gets overlooked until a network fault happens - having it built in matters for sites where continuous recording integrity is a requirement.
Where this unit reaches its limits: simultaneous 4K decoding is capped at 2 channels, so sites that need full 4K live view across all positions will need to step up to a higher-spec recorder. It is also a recording platform, not a VMS replacement - advanced analytics, cross-site management, or enterprise access control integration will need additional software. Available through Security Australia, this NVR suits straightforward 16-camera deployments where simplicity and PoE consolidation are the priorities.
Before You Buy
Storage Planning: The NVR4216-16P-4KS2 supports internal HDD installation but ships without drives - you will need to factor in HDD capacity based on your channel count, resolution, frame rate, and retention period. At 8MP across all 16 channels with H.265 encoding, storage requirements add up quickly. Use a storage calculator before specifying drives to avoid under-provisioning at commissioning. Also confirm total PoE power budget against your camera selection, as higher-spec cameras with heaters or IR illuminators draw more power per port.
Decoding Ceiling: The unit decodes up to 2 channels at 4K and up to 8 channels at 1080p simultaneously during live view. If your monitoring station requires more than 2 simultaneous 4K streams on screen at once - for example a 16-up display wall at full resolution - this recorder's decoding capability will be the limiting factor. Plan your live view layout around this ceiling before installation.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying 16 IP cameras and want to eliminate the need for a separate PoE switch - the 16 built-in PoE ports handle power and data for every channel from a single 1U unit in the rack.
- Good match if: Your site has existing third-party ONVIF 2.4 cameras that need to be retained - this NVR connects to Axis, Sony, Panasonic, and other ONVIF-compliant devices without replacing functional hardware.
- You may need a different model if: You require simultaneous 4K decoding across more than 2 channels in live view, or need enterprise-grade VMS features such as multi-site management, deep analytics, or access control integration - a higher-tier NVR or dedicated VMS server platform would be more suitable.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need all 16 PoE connections in a single 1U unit with 4K recording capability and H.265 storage efficiency - and your live view requirement stays within 2 simultaneous 4K streams.
- You may need a different model if: Your monitoring station requires more than 2 simultaneous 4K streams in live view, or you need more than 16 channels - a higher-channel or higher-decoding-spec NVR would serve that requirement better.
- Pairs well with: Dahua IVS-capable IP cameras (to activate tripwire, intrusion, and event search features), and cameras with onboard SD card slots (to take full advantage of ANR).
Common Questions
-
Does this NVR come with hard drives included?
No. The NVR4216-16P-4KS2 ships without HDDs. You will need to purchase and install compatible surveillance-grade hard drives separately. Capacity planning should account for the number of channels, recording resolution, frame rate, and your required retention period. H.265 encoding helps reduce storage demand compared to H.264, but at 8MP across multiple channels storage requirements are substantial - confirm your HDD capacity before ordering. -
Will this NVR work with my existing non-Dahua IP cameras?
Yes, in most cases. The NVR supports ONVIF 2.4 protocol and is confirmed compatible with Axis, Sony, and Panasonic IP cameras. Most modern IP cameras from reputable brands support ONVIF, so integration is generally straightforward. Note that advanced features like IVS event search and ANR typically require Dahua cameras with those functions enabled - third-party cameras will record standard video but may not pass event metadata through to the NVR. -
How many cameras can I view at 4K resolution at the same time?
2 channels simultaneously at 4K. The NVR decodes up to 2 streams at 4K (8MP) and up to 8 streams at 1080p at the same time during live view. If you configure a 16-camera grid view, not all streams will display at their native 4K resolution concurrently - the NVR will manage stream quality based on available decoding headroom. For full 4K live view on more than 2 channels simultaneously, a higher-spec recorder with greater decoding capacity would be required. -
What is the maximum incoming bandwidth and will it handle 16 high-resolution cameras?
The confirmed maximum incoming bandwidth is 200Mbps. Whether this is sufficient depends on the bitrate settings of your cameras. At H.265 with 8MP cameras, typical bitrates per camera range from roughly 4-8Mbps depending on scene complexity and frame rate settings. Across 16 channels that sits comfortably within the 200Mbps ceiling under normal conditions, but it is worth calculating your expected total bitrate during camera commissioning to confirm headroom - particularly if cameras are set to high frame rates or CBR encoding. -
Can I access live footage and recordings remotely on my phone?
Yes. The NVR4216-16P-4KS2 supports remote access via the Easy4ip app, available on both iOS and Android. The app allows live view, event notifications, and recorded footage search from a smartphone or tablet. Remote access requires the NVR to have an active internet connection and appropriate port forwarding or P2P cloud connection configured during setup. -
Does ANR require special cameras or is it built into the NVR?
ANR requires compatible cameras with SD card slots installed. The feature is built into the NVR's firmware, but it only activates when the connected camera supports ANR and has a formatted SD card present. When the network link between camera and NVR drops, the camera records locally to its SD card. Once the connection is re-established, the NVR automatically pulls the stored footage and inserts it into the correct position in the timeline. The team at Security Australia can advise which Dahua camera models in the current range support ANR if you are specifying a new system. -
Does this NVR support IVS analytics on its own, or do the cameras need to do the processing?
The cameras do the processing. IVS analytics such as tripwire detection, intrusion detection, and abandoned object detection are computed at the camera level - the NVR receives and records the event metadata alongside the video stream. This means you need IVS-capable Dahua IP cameras connected to this recorder to use event-based search and filtering. The NVR also supports recording of business analytics data including people counting and heat mapping from cameras equipped with those functions.
