Product Overview
Model: DH-PFS3106-4ET-60
Who This Is For
For installers and integrators who need to power a small run of IP cameras without routing cables back to a central NVR or switch, the Dahua DH-PFS3106-4ET-60 is a compact unmanaged PoE switch built specifically for surveillance deployments. It suits scenarios where cameras are clustered in one area - a carpark entry, a loading dock, a building corner - and a local switch is more practical than long runs to the head-end. The 4 PoE ports handle standard IP cameras on IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at, while the orange Hi-PoE port delivers up to 60W for higher-draw devices such as PTZ cameras or PoE-powered access control hardware. The 250 m long-distance PoE mode extends reach well beyond the standard 100 m cable limit, useful on large properties where trench runs or building spans make short cabling impractical. Plug-and-play operation means no configuration is required on-site.
What This Switch Actually Does
Hi-PoE on Port 1
The orange port (Port 1) delivers up to 60W output, well above the 30W ceiling of standard IEEE 802.3at. This matters when powering PTZ cameras with integrated heaters, high-wattage IR illuminators, or access control panels that draw more than a standard camera.
250 m Long-Distance PoE
Long-distance mode extends PoE transmission to 250 m on Cat5e or Cat6 cable - more than double the standard 100 m limit. Speed drops to 10 Mbps in this mode, which is sufficient for standard IP camera streams but not suited to high-bitrate multi-sensor units.
PoE Watchdog
The watchdog function continuously monitors each PoE port. If a connected camera stops responding, the switch automatically cycles power on that port to restart it - avoiding a manual site visit to troubleshoot a frozen camera feed.
Intelligent Power Management
When total power draw approaches the 60W budget, the switch sheds load one port at a time starting from the highest-numbered port, rather than cutting all ports simultaneously. Priority devices on lower-numbered ports stay online while the overload is managed.
Wide Temperature Tolerance
Rated from -30 °C to +65 °C, this switch operates in conditions that would shut down standard office-grade networking hardware. It suits outdoor enclosures, unheated plant rooms, and rooftop cabinets where ambient temperature swings significantly.
SFP Uplink + Gigabit RJ-45 Uplink
Two uplink options are available: a Gigabit RJ-45 port (Port 5) for standard copper connection to an NVR or upstream switch, and an SFP optical port (Port 6) for fibre runs where copper distance limits apply or electrical isolation between buildings is needed.
Who Buys This Model
- CCTV installers on large properties: Where camera clusters are spread across a site and individual cable runs back to a head-end NVR would exceed 100 m, the 250 m long-distance PoE mode allows a local switch to bridge the gap without active extenders.
- Integrators installing PTZ cameras outdoors: The Hi-PoE port's 60W output supports PTZ cameras with integral heater/fan units that exceed the 30W ceiling of standard PoE+ switches.
- Site managers with unmanned camera locations: The PoE watchdog auto-restarts frozen cameras without requiring a technician call-out, reducing ongoing maintenance overhead at remote or unattended installations.
- Installers working in outdoor enclosures or harsh environments: The -30 °C to +65 °C operating range and metal housing make this switch viable in locations where standard unmanaged switches would fail due to temperature or electrical interference.
- Integrators connecting across separate buildings: The SFP optical uplink allows fibre connection to an upstream switch or NVR, removing ground loop risk and bypassing copper distance limits between structures.
Honest Assessment
The DH-PFS3106-4ET-60 does a specific job well: it powers a small cluster of surveillance cameras at extended cable distances, in harsh temperature conditions, with automatic port recovery built in. The 250 m long-distance PoE is genuinely useful on rural properties and large commercial sites where trenching longer cabling is the only alternative. The Hi-PoE port adds flexibility for a single high-draw device without needing a separate injector. The PoE watchdog addresses a real maintenance problem on unattended installations. Available through Security Australia, this switch is unmanaged - there is no VLAN configuration, no QoS priority setting, and no remote management interface. For installations requiring network segmentation, bandwidth prioritisation across multiple camera streams, or remote switch monitoring, a managed PoE switch is the more appropriate product type. The 60W total PoE budget also means all 4 ports cannot simultaneously run at maximum draw, so power budgeting across connected devices is important before installation.
Before You Buy
Power Budget Note: The total PoE budget is 60W across all 4 ports. If Port 1 is running a PTZ camera drawing 45W in Hi-PoE mode, only 15W remains across Ports 2-4 combined. Calculate the power draw of every connected device before committing to this switch - a PTZ plus 3 standard cameras at 8W each will exceed the budget. For higher combined loads, a switch with a larger PoE power budget is required.
Long-Distance Mode Bandwidth Limit: Beyond 100 m, the switch drops to 10 Mbps per port. For a single standard IP camera this is generally adequate, but high-resolution cameras with sub-streams, or cameras configured for high bitrates, may show latency or dropped frames at extended distances. Confirm the camera's configured bitrate is within the 10 Mbps ceiling before running cable beyond 100 m.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing 2-4 cameras in a location more than 100 m from the NVR and need to extend PoE reach without active extenders - the 250 m long-distance PoE mode is built for this scenario.
- Good match if: One device in your camera cluster is a PTZ or other high-draw unit requiring more than 30W - the Hi-PoE port on Port 1 handles up to 60W without a separate injector.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation requires VLAN segmentation, remote switch management, or per-port bandwidth control - an unmanaged switch cannot provide these features and a managed PoE switch would be the appropriate product type.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need long-distance PoE beyond 100 m, a Hi-PoE port for a single high-draw device, and wide temperature tolerance in a compact unmanaged switch - without paying for managed switch features you do not need.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation requires VLAN segmentation, per-port bandwidth management, or remote switch monitoring - a managed PoE switch is the appropriate product type for those requirements.
- Pairs well with: A PoE-compatible NVR as the upstream recording and management device, with this switch handling the local camera cluster and passing aggregated traffic back via the Gigabit or SFP uplink.
Common Questions
-
Will this switch power a PTZ camera that requires more than 30W?
Yes - but only on Port 1. Port 1 is the designated Hi-PoE port and supports up to 60W output, which covers PTZ cameras with heater/fan units or other high-draw devices that exceed the standard IEEE 802.3at ceiling of 30W. Ports 2-4 are standard PoE/PoE+ ports and should not be relied upon for devices drawing more than 30W. -
Does the 250 m long-distance PoE mode work with any cable type?
No - Dahua specifies Cat5e or Cat6 cable with a maximum DC resistance of less than 10 ohms per 100 m for long-distance mode. Older Cat5 (non-e), higher-resistance cable, or cable with damaged pairs may not sustain power delivery at extended distances. At 250 m, the transmission speed is limited to 10 Mbps, and load capacity drops to approximately 37-40W depending on the PoE standard in use. -
How does the PoE watchdog work and does it need to be configured?
No configuration is required. The watchdog function is built into the switch and runs automatically. It monitors each PoE port for communication failures and, if a connected device stops responding, the switch power-cycles that port to attempt a restart. This is particularly useful for IP cameras that can lock up and require a power reset to recover their network connection. -
What happens if the total power draw across all 4 ports exceeds 60W?
The intelligent power management feature steps in before a complete shutdown occurs. Rather than cutting all ports simultaneously, the switch reduces power one port at a time starting from the highest-numbered port (Port 4 first) until total consumption falls back within the 60W budget. Devices on lower-numbered ports - including the Hi-PoE port on Port 1 - are prioritised to remain online. -
Can this switch be used in an outdoor cabinet in Australian summer conditions?
Yes, provided the cabinet temperature stays within the -30 °C to +65 °C operating range. In direct-sun outdoor enclosures in northern Australia, cabinet internal temperatures can approach this ceiling on hot days. Adequate ventilation or a vented enclosure is advisable - the switch's fanless metal housing dissipates heat passively, so airflow around the unit matters in very high ambient temperatures. The stocked-by Security Australia version of this switch does not have an IP rating, so it should be housed in a suitable weatherproof enclosure rather than mounted in the open. -
Does this switch support VLANs or remote management?
No. The DH-PFS3106-4ET-60 is an unmanaged switch. It has no web interface, no VLAN support, no SNMP monitoring, and no remote management capability. It operates on a plug-and-play basis - connect power, connect cameras and uplink, and it functions immediately without any configuration. Installations requiring network segmentation or remote switch management need a managed PoE switch instead. -
What surge and lightning protection does this switch have?
The switch provides electrostatic discharge protection up to 15 kV (air discharge) and 8 kV (contact discharge), and lightning/surge protection of 4 kV in common mode and 2 kV in differential mode. This provides a meaningful level of protection against induced surges on cable runs but is not a substitute for a dedicated lightning protection system on installations in high-exposure locations such as elevated sites or open rural properties.
