Dahua DH-IPC-HDW2531EMP-AS-0280B-S2-AUS 5MP Starlight IP 30m IR Turret Camera
The Dahua HDW2531EMP-AS delivers 5MP Starlight performance for homeowners and small business operators who need reliable around-the-clock surveillance in a compact turret form. Featuring a 2.8mm fixed lens with a 103° horizontal field of view, it covers wide entry points such as driveways, shopfronts, and doorways without the need for adjustment after installation. Built-in Smart IR reaches up to 30m, automatically adjusting LED intensity to prevent washout on close subjects while maintaining detail further away. A built-in microphone adds audio recording capability, and onboard MicroSD support up to 256GB provides a local backup option independent of network storage.
Why This Model
- Starlight low-light sensor: The 1/2.7" sensor with F1.6 aperture pulls in usable colour detail at 0.008 lux, meaning the camera continues to produce clear footage in dimly lit car parks or poorly lit corridors where standard 5MP sensors produce noise or switch to black-and-white early.
- IVS tripwire and intrusion detection: On-camera intelligent video analysis triggers alerts when a defined line or zone boundary is crossed, reducing the false alarm rate compared to basic pixel-change motion detection.
- PoE and MicroSD combined: Single-cable PoE installation keeps cabling tidy, while the local MicroSD slot up to 256GB means footage is retained even if the network recorder goes offline or loses connection.

Product Overview
Model: DH-IPC-HDW2531EMP-AS-0280B-S2-AUS
Who This Is For
When low-light performance on a fixed outdoor position is the priority, the Dahua DH-IPC-HDW2531EMP-AS-0280B-S2-AUS delivers genuine Starlight capability in a compact turret housing. This 5MP camera is configured from the factory with a 2.8mm lens, giving a 103-degree horizontal field of view - wide enough for a single camera to cover a driveway entry, carport, rear yard, or shopfront without needing a second unit. The turret form factor suits eave, soffit, and wall mounting equally well, with a full 360-degree pan and 78-degree tilt adjustment available after install. IP67 protection means weather exposure is not a concern. Installers specifying cost-effective 5MP Lite series cameras for small commercial premises, rental properties, or residential installs where night colour is not essential but IR quality absolutely is will find this model straightforward to justify and easy to deploy.
What This Camera Actually Does
Starlight Low-Light Sensitivity
The 1/2.7-inch sensor with F1.6 aperture reaches 0.008 Lux minimum illumination. In practice, this means usable monochrome detail in near-total darkness before the IR even activates - useful for dimly lit lanes, car parks, and entries with inconsistent artificial lighting.
30m Smart IR Illumination
2 IR LEDs with auto-intensity adjustment prevent the washout effect common on cheaper cameras when a subject moves close to the lens. The IR output adjusts dynamically so the image stays usable whether a person is 2 metres or 25 metres from the camera.
5MP Resolution with Smart H.265+
Maximum output of 2592x1944 at 20fps or 2688x1520 at 25/30fps. Smart H.265+ compression uses scene-adaptive rate control, which can significantly cut storage consumption compared to fixed-bitrate H.265 - important when running multiple cameras on a shared NVR.
120dB Wide Dynamic Range
True WDR at 120dB handles scenes where a bright sky or strong overhead light sits behind the subject. Entry points facing east in the morning or west in the afternoon - common problem positions - benefit from this rather than producing a silhouetted figure against blown-out background.
IVS Tripwire and Intrusion Detection
Onboard Intelligent Video System supports configurable tripwire lines and intrusion zones. These generate targeted alerts rather than blanket motion events, reducing false triggers from trees or passing vehicles while flagging genuine boundary crossings.
Who Buys This Model
- Residential installers: Specifying 5MP cameras for single dwellings and townhouses where the 2.8mm wide-angle covers a full driveway or backyard without needing to split coverage across 2 cameras.
- Property managers and landlords: Deploying PoE-based systems across rental properties, where single-cable installation reduces labour time and the IP67 rating handles Queensland or coastal environments without additional housing.
- Small retail and hospitality operators: Mounting above service entries, beer gardens, or car parks where the wide FOV, IR range, and IVS intrusion alerts provide both recording and real-time notification without a complex AI camera tier.
- Strata and body corporate committees: Adding coverage to shared access points, bin stores, and lobby approaches where a discreet turret profile and local Micro SD recording up to 256GB provide a failsafe if NVR connectivity drops.
Honest Assessment
The DH-IPC-HDW2531EMP-AS-0280B-S2-AUS does its core job well: 5MP detail, 30m IR with adaptive intensity, a genuinely wide 103-degree field of view, and Starlight sensor sensitivity that outperforms standard Lite-series cameras in dim conditions. The Smart H.265+ codec keeps storage requirements manageable across multi-camera installs. IP67 and wide-voltage tolerance mean it handles outdoor placement without fuss. Available through Security Australia, this model sits in the Lite series, which means it does not carry perimeter protection AI (human and vehicle classification), full-colour night imaging, or active deterrence - those functions require stepping up to the Dahua Smart Dual Light or TiOC range. It also has a built-in microphone for audio capture but no built-in speaker, so two-way audio is not supported. If the install requires active audio warnings or colour night vision without IR, a different camera type is the better fit.
Before You Buy
Lens and DORI Note: This variant is fixed at 2.8mm. At that focal length, the DORI recognition distance is 11.2m and identification distance is 5.6m. If you need facial identification beyond 6 metres - such as at a wide driveway entry where people approach from distance - the 3.6mm variant or a supplementary closer-mounted camera should be considered. Do not assume 30m IR range equals 30m identification range; these are separate specifications.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need 5MP resolution, a wide 103-degree field of view, Starlight low-light performance, and IVS detection in a compact IP67-rated turret at a Lite series price point.
- You may need a different model if: Colour night vision without IR is required, or you need active deterrence such as a siren or strobe light - in those cases a full-colour dual-light or TiOC turret is the more appropriate product type.
- Pairs well with: A Dahua PoE NVR with Smart H.265+ decoding support, ensuring the compression efficiency of this camera is fully utilised and reducing overall storage requirements across a multi-camera system.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work with a standard PoE switch or does it need PoE+?
Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient. This camera operates on 12V DC or standard PoE, so any compliant PoE switch or PoE NVR port running 802.3af will power it without needing a PoE+ (802.3at) port. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera, which simplifies cable runs considerably on multi-camera installs. -
Will this camera identify a person's face at 20 metres?
No. At 2.8mm, the confirmed DORI identification distance is 5.6 metres. At 20 metres this camera reaches well into detect range (56m) and observe range (22.4m), meaning you can confirm a person is present and track general movement - but forensic facial identification requires the subject to be within approximately 5 to 6 metres of the lens. If identification at greater distances is a requirement, a 3.6mm lens variant or a narrower fixed-lens camera positioned closer to the subject should be considered. -
What does Starlight actually mean in this camera's context - will it show colour at night?
No, Starlight on this model means enhanced monochrome sensitivity in very low light, not colour night vision. The 0.008 Lux minimum illumination and F1.6 aperture allow the sensor to produce a usable greyscale image at light levels where a standard camera would show noise or black. Once the IR LEDs activate, the image is also monochrome. Full-colour night imaging requires a dual-light or full-colour camera with warm-light LEDs - a different product category. -
Does this camera support two-way audio?
No. This model has a built-in microphone for audio recording only. There is no built-in speaker, so two-way communication through the camera itself is not supported. If two-way audio is needed at an entry point, a camera with both a built-in speaker and microphone confirmed in the specification, or a separate intercom device, is required. -
How does the IVS tripwire differ from standard motion detection on this camera?
IVS tripwire is directional and zone-specific, while motion detection responds to any pixel change in the frame. With tripwire, you define a line in the scene and set which crossing direction triggers an alert - useful for a gate where you only want to be notified of someone entering, not exiting. Standard motion detection triggers on wind-blown vegetation, lighting changes, and insects near the lens. The IVS function produces substantially fewer nuisance alerts in outdoor environments, and is confirmed available on this model alongside intrusion zone detection. -
What is the difference between detect, observe, recognise, and identify in the DORI spec, and why does it matter for placement?
DORI is the European standard for defining what a camera can actually show at a given distance - it directly affects where you mount the camera for a specific purpose. Detect (56m at 2.8mm) means you can confirm something is in frame. Observe (22.4m) means you can describe general features - clothing colour, movement. Recognise (11.2m) means you can identify a previously known person. Identify (5.6m) means sufficient detail for forensic or evidentiary purposes such as confirming a face. For an installer, this means if evidence-quality footage is the objective, the camera needs to be physically positioned so the subject passes within 5.6 metres of the lens - not just within IR range. Security Australia stocks this model specifically in the 2.8mm variant under this SKU; if a longer recognise or identify range is needed at the same position, the 3.6mm variant extends those distances to 16m and 8m respectively.
