Product Overview
Model: DH-HAC-HFW2501TUP-Z-A-DP-27135-S2
Who This Is For
When getting the field of view right without physically repositioning the camera is the priority, the Dahua HAC-HFW2501TUP-Z-A-DP-27135-S2 is the camera installers reach for. The 2.7mm-13.5mm motorised varifocal lens with autofocus lets you dial in coverage from a wide 113° horizontal angle down to a tight 31.4° from the XVR menu - no ladder required after commissioning. This suits sites where coaxial infrastructure is already in place: warehouses, logistics yards, industrial perimeters, and commercial properties upgrading from analogue without rewiring. The 5MP Starlight sensor pulls usable colour detail at 0.001 Lux, the 80m Smart IR covers long approaches in complete darkness, and the HDCVI signal runs up to 700m over existing RG59 or RG6 coax. For installers and property managers who need flexible framing, high-resolution coverage, and long-distance coaxial transmission in a single outdoor bullet, this is a direct and practical fit.
What This Camera Actually Does
Motorised Varifocal Lens with Autofocus
The 2.7mm-13.5mm motorised lens adjusts zoom and focus remotely via the XVR interface. No manual lens adjustment on the camera body. Once the zoom position is set, autofocus locks sharpness in automatically - useful when a camera is mounted high or in a difficult-access position.
Starlight Low-Light Colour Imaging
The Starlight sensor captures usable colour images at 0.001 Lux with the F1.6 aperture. In near-darkness - lit car parks, poorly lit yards, loading areas with minimal ambient light - the camera holds colour before switching to IR monochrome, giving more context for identification.
80m Smart IR Illumination
4 IR LEDs cover up to 80m in total darkness. Smart IR adjusts LED intensity based on subject distance - subjects close to the camera won't blow out to white, while subjects at range stay illuminated. Operates down to 0 Lux with IR active.
HDCVI Multi-Format over Coax
A DIP switch selects CVI, TVI, AHD, or CVBS output from a single BNC port. HDCVI transmits 5MP video, audio, and data over one coaxial cable up to 700m. For sites with existing coax infrastructure, this avoids complete rewiring when upgrading from older analogue systems.
120dB True Wide Dynamic Range
120dB WDR handles high-contrast scenes - entry gates with bright sky behind, loading docks with artificial light and shadowed areas - processing bright and dark zones simultaneously so neither is crushed or blown out. Backed by BLC, HLC, and HLC-Pro modes as alternatives.
IP67 and 4kV Lightning Protection
Full metal casing with IP67 ingress protection handles sustained rain and dust. The 4kV lightning rating protects the camera and connected recorder in outdoor exposed locations - relevant for perimeter cameras on poles or industrial sites in storm-prone areas.
Who Buys This Model
- Industrial facility managers upgrading existing coax: Sites with RG59 or RG6 already run to camera positions can replace old analogue heads with this camera and get 5MP HDCVI at up to 700m transmission - no new cabling required.
- Installers covering long outdoor approaches: The 80m Smart IR and 13.5mm tight end of the zoom range pushes identification distances to 21m and observation to 84m - suited to driveways, perimeter fences, and loading dock approaches where subjects need to be readable at range.
- Commercial property owners with high-contrast entry points: Retail car parks, gated entries, and warehouse gate systems where morning and afternoon sun creates extreme lighting variation are handled by 120dB WDR without needing manual mode changes.
- Security integrators specifying flexible framing: The motorised lens allows field of view to be set or adjusted post-installation from the XVR without physical access to the camera - valuable in commercial fit-outs where camera positioning gets finalised late in the project.
Honest Assessment
The HAC-HFW2501TUP-Z-A-DP-27135-S2 does three things well: it gives installers remote zoom and autofocus control on an HDCVI bullet, it combines Starlight low-light colour with 80m IR for genuine 24-hour outdoor performance, and it runs 5MP HD video over coaxial cable infrastructure that would otherwise need to be replaced. The 120dB WDR and full metal IP67 housing make it a practical outdoor perimeter camera for industrial and commercial applications. Available through Security Australia, it suits analogue-to-HDCVI upgrade projects where rewiring is not on the table. Where it will not be the right choice: if the site has no coaxial infrastructure and Cat5e/Cat6 is being installed fresh, an IP network camera will give broader compatibility, cloud access, and AI analytics that this analogue-format camera does not offer. Similarly, if wide-area coverage from a single camera position is required, a PTZ or multi-sensor camera covers more ground.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: This camera outputs via a single BNC port with the format selected by DIP switch - CVI, TVI, AHD, or CVBS. At 5MP resolution, you must select CVI mode; TVI and AHD are limited to 4MP on this model, and CVBS drops to 960H. Confirm your XVR supports 5MP HDCVI input before commissioning. Power is 12V DC or 24V AC - verify your distribution matches, as the camera draws up to 12.5W with IR fully active. The motorised zoom is controlled via the XVR's camera menu using the data channel over coax, so a compatible Dahua XVR with UTC (Up the Coax) control is required for remote lens adjustment.
Cable Run Note: The 700m coaxial transmission distance for 5MP HDCVI applies to quality RG59 or RG6 cable. UTP transmission via a balun is rated to 300m for this resolution. If runs approach these limits, test signal quality before final commissioning. For runs exceeding these distances, a signal repeater or moving to IP infrastructure will be required.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You have existing coaxial cabling and need to upgrade to 5MP resolution - the HDCVI format runs 5MP video over the same RG59 or RG6 cable up to 700m, and the DIP switch lets you select the format that matches your recorder.
- Good match if: The camera will be mounted at height or in a difficult-access location where adjusting the field of view after installation needs to happen from the XVR - the motorised varifocal with autofocus handles zoom and focus adjustment remotely without revisiting the camera.
- You may need a different model if: The installation involves new Cat5e or Cat6 cabling with no existing coax - an IP network camera will offer more flexibility, onboard analytics, and recorder compatibility in that scenario. Browse IP bullet cameras on securityaustralia.com.au for alternatives.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Existing coaxial infrastructure is in place and the site needs 5MP resolution, remote lens adjustment, and 80m IR without re-running cable.
- You may need a different model if: New Cat5e or Cat6 is being installed and onboard AI analytics, cloud access, or PoE simplicity are priorities - an IP network bullet camera with varifocal lens will be a stronger fit in that scenario.
- Pairs well with: A compatible Dahua XVR with 5MP HDCVI input and UTC (Up the Coax) control for remote lens management, and a 12V DC or 24V AC power distribution unit rated for the 12.5W draw with IR active.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera work with my existing coaxial cabling?
Yes, provided the cable is RG59 or RG6 in reasonable condition. HDCVI transmits 5MP video, audio, and control data over a single coaxial cable up to 700m. If your existing runs are shorter than that and the cable is intact, this camera replaces the old analogue head at the camera end - the XVR at the recorder end needs to support 5MP HDCVI input. -
How does the motorised zoom actually work - do I need to be at the camera to adjust it?
No. The zoom and autofocus are controlled remotely via the XVR's camera menu using the data channel sent Up the Coax (UTC). After physical mounting and connecting the BNC cable, you adjust the focal length and the camera autofocuses at that zoom position from the recorder interface. A compatible Dahua XVR with UTC support is required - you cannot adjust the motorised lens from the camera body itself. -
What is the optical zoom ratio on the 2.7mm-13.5mm lens?
The zoom ratio is 5x (13.5mm divided by 2.7mm). This is an optical zoom range controlled by the motorised mechanism - not digital zoom. The confirmed 4x digital zoom is separate and applies additional enlargement on top of the optical position. For most outdoor installs, staying within the optical range preserves the full 5MP resolution at the chosen field of view. -
Does this camera record audio?
Yes, it has a built-in microphone that transmits audio over the coaxial cable via HDCVI to the recorder. There is no built-in speaker, so there is no two-way audio capability. Audio recording must be enabled on the connected XVR, which also needs to support audio input from HDCVI channels. -
Will this camera work on a TVI or AHD recorder I already have?
Yes, within resolution limits. The output format is selectable by DIP switch on the camera body - choose TVI or AHD and connect to your existing recorder. At TVI and AHD, the maximum resolution on this camera is 4MP (2560x1440), not 5MP. If you need 5MP output, the camera must be set to CVI mode and connected to a 5MP HDCVI-capable recorder. -
How far can this camera identify a person at the 13.5mm zoom setting?
The confirmed DORI identification distance at 13.5mm is 21m. At that distance, the image contains enough detail to identify the individual. Observation (enough detail to describe clothing and build) reaches 84m, and detection (presence of a person) extends to 210m. At the wide 2.7mm setting, identification drops to 6.4m and detection to 64m, reflecting the wider field of view. -
Is this camera suitable for outdoor use in extreme Australian conditions?
Yes. The IP67 rating prevents dust and sustained water ingress, the full metal casing handles physical durability, and the operating temperature range of -30°C to +60°C covers both alpine cold and extreme summer heat. The 4kV lightning protection is particularly relevant for exposed outdoor perimeter positions on poles or buildings in storm-prone regions. The ±25% AC and ±10% DC input voltage tolerance also accommodates power fluctuations common on rural and industrial sites.
