Product Overview
Model: AXIS S3016-16TB
Who This Is For
When a clean, cabled rack installation with no separate PoE switch is the priority, the AXIS S3016 16TB delivers exactly that. Designed for integrators and IT-managed deployments, this 1U rack recorder pairs a 16-channel NVR with an integrated PoE switch in a single chassis - removing the need for a separate network switch in the rack altogether. It suits medium-sized commercial sites: multi-tenancy offices, warehouses, schools, and retail environments where a structured rack room already exists or is being built. The 16TB surveillance-grade hard drive storage is included, so the system arrives ready to record without additional drive procurement. Installers specifying AXIS camera deployments will find the S3016 integrates directly into the AXIS ecosystem, keeping camera power, data, and recording on a unified, rack-mounted unit.

What This Recorder Actually Does
Integrated PoE Switch
The built-in PoE switch powers and connects up to 16 cameras over a single Cat cable each - eliminating the need for a separate network switch in the rack. This simplifies the infrastructure footprint and reduces rack space consumption on every install.
16-Channel Recording
Supports up to 16 IP camera channels, giving medium-sized sites full coverage capacity in a single recorder. Whether used across multiple entry points, corridors, or car parks, all 16 feeds are managed and stored from one box.
16TB Surveillance-Grade Storage
Ships with 16TB of pre-installed surveillance-grade hard drives - drives rated for continuous 24/7 write cycles. This removes the procurement and configuration step of sourcing compatible storage separately before the system can go live.
1U Rack Form Factor
The slim 1U rackmount profile fits into standard 19-inch rack enclosures alongside IT and networking equipment. This is the form factor suited to server rooms, comms racks, and structured cabling environments rather than desktop or wall-mount installs.
USB Video Export
A USB port allows recorded footage to be exported directly to a USB drive without requiring network access to the recorder. This is practical for incident evidence extraction, handover to authorities, or off-site archiving without additional software steps.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators: Installers deploying AXIS IP camera systems into commercial sites who need a single rack unit that handles both PoE camera power and 16-channel recording without extra switch hardware.
- IT Managers and Facilities Teams: Teams maintaining structured rack environments in schools, offices, or warehouses who want surveillance infrastructure that sits cleanly in the comms room alongside existing IT equipment.
- Retail and Hospitality Operators: Multi-camera retail or hospitality sites running up to 16 cameras across entry points, shopfloors, and back-of-house areas where a single managed recording unit simplifies ongoing maintenance.
- Body Corporate and Strata Managers: Strata and apartment complex managers specifying a professional rack-based surveillance infrastructure where storage, power, and recording are consolidated and lockable in a secure comms room.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS S3016 16TB does the consolidation job well. Having the PoE switch built into the same 1U chassis as the recorder genuinely reduces rack complexity - fewer power supplies, fewer points of failure, and a tidier cable environment. The 16TB surveillance-grade drives are a practical inclusion; they arrive ready to record and are specified for continuous operation, not the desktop drives that occasionally get dropped into budget recorders. The AXIS ecosystem compatibility is a real advantage for sites already running AXIS cameras.
What this unit will not do is scale beyond 16 channels without adding a second recorder, and its rack-only form factor means it is not suited to wall-mount comms enclosures or desktop placements. Sites needing 32 or more channels, or deployments without a structured rack room, should look at alternative recorder types available through Security Australia before committing to this model.
Before You Buy
Rack Space and Power: The S3016 occupies 1U in a standard 19-inch rack. Before ordering, confirm your rack has at least 1U of free space and that the rack PDU can supply adequate power for both the recorder and all PoE-powered cameras. The integrated PoE switch has a finite total PoE power budget - if you are connecting high-power cameras such as PTZ models with heaters or multi-sensor units, calculate your total PoE load against the switch's power budget before finalising the camera selection.
Camera Compatibility: The AXIS S3016 is designed to work within the AXIS ecosystem. While it will record standard ONVIF-compliant cameras from other manufacturers, full feature integration - including AXIS Camera Station management, deep analytics, and firmware coordination - applies to AXIS cameras. If your deployment mixes AXIS and non-AXIS cameras, confirm compatibility for each non-AXIS model before install.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing into a site with a structured comms rack and want to eliminate a separate PoE switch - the S3016's integrated switch handles both camera power and data from the one 1U unit.
- Good match if: Your site runs up to 16 AXIS IP cameras and you need 16TB of pre-installed surveillance-grade storage ready to record on day one without additional drive sourcing.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 16 camera channels, or you need a desktop or wall-mount recorder without a rack - a higher-channel or desktop-form NVR would be a better fit for those deployments.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a 16-channel recorder and PoE switch in a single 1U rack unit with pre-installed surveillance-grade storage - removing the need to source, configure, and rack a separate PoE switch.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires more than 16 channels, or you need a desktop or wall-mount recorder form factor - a higher-channel rack NVR or a compact desktop NVR would be better suited to those requirements.
- Pairs well with: AXIS IP dome, turret, or bullet cameras connected via Cat5e or Cat6 directly to the integrated PoE switch ports; rackmount UPS for power continuity protection.
Common Questions
-
Does the AXIS S3016 include a PoE switch, or do I need to buy one separately?
No, you do not need a separate PoE switch. The S3016 has an integrated PoE switch built into the same 1U chassis as the recorder. Each of the 16 camera channels has a corresponding PoE port, so cameras connect directly to the recorder unit via Cat5e or Cat6 cable for both data and power. This is one of the primary reasons integrators specify this model for rack deployments. -
Is the 16TB storage pre-installed, or do I need to fit drives before it will record?
The 16TB storage is pre-installed. The S3016 16TB ships with surveillance-grade hard drives already fitted and configured, so the unit can begin recording as soon as cameras are connected and the system is commissioned - no separate drive procurement or installation is required. -
Will this recorder work with non-AXIS cameras?
Yes, with limitations. The S3016 supports ONVIF-compliant cameras from other manufacturers for basic recording. However, full feature integration - including AXIS Camera Station management, deep analytics access, and coordinated firmware updates - applies specifically to AXIS cameras. For mixed deployments, confirm ONVIF compatibility for each non-AXIS camera before finalising the system design. -
Does this recorder fit into a standard 19-inch rack?
Yes. The AXIS S3016 is a 1U rackmount unit designed for standard 19-inch rack enclosures. It occupies just 1 rack unit of height, making it compatible with server racks, network cabinets, and comms room enclosures already in use for IT infrastructure. Confirm your rack has at least 1U of free space and sufficient PDU capacity before ordering. -
How do I export footage from the AXIS S3016 for an incident report or police handover?
Footage can be exported directly using the USB port on the unit. Connect a USB drive, navigate to the relevant footage through the recorder interface, and export the clip without requiring network access or remote software. This is the practical on-site method for extracting evidence for authorities or insurance purposes. The Security Australia team can advise on compatible USB drive formats if needed. -
What happens if I connect high-power cameras like PTZ units - will the integrated PoE switch handle them?
Not necessarily for all 16 ports simultaneously with high-draw devices. The integrated PoE switch has a total power budget shared across all 16 ports. Standard AXIS dome and turret cameras will typically stay well within this budget, but high-draw devices such as PTZ cameras with heaters, or multi-sensor units, consume significantly more power per port. Calculate your total PoE load across all connected cameras against the switch's total power budget before finalising your camera specification to avoid under-powering issues on a busy install.
