Product Overview
Model: AXIS S3008 Mk II
Who This Is For
When a compact, all-in-one recording solution for a small-to-medium Axis camera deployment is the priority, the AXIS S3008 Mk II sits in a category of its own. It is built for installers and IT-aware end users who want a tidy, single-unit setup - combining an 8-port PoE switch, surveillance-grade 4TB hard drive, and AXIS Companion VMS integration into a 180 x 180 x 53 mm enclosure that sits on a desk, mounts on a wall, or slots into a rack with optional accessories. This is the recorder specified by small business owners, retail site managers, and multi-site operators who need a dependable AXIS-native system without the complexity of a full server-based deployment. It suits environments running up to 8 Axis network cameras with firmware 5.50 or later, and is equally at home as a standalone site recorder or as a network storage expansion node within a larger existing system.

What This NVR Actually Does
8-Port PoE Switch Built In
All 8 rear RJ45 ports deliver PoE to connected Axis cameras, with a combined power budget of 124 W. A single cable per camera carries both power and data, eliminating the need for a separate PoE switch in small deployments and keeping rack space and cabling to a minimum.
4TB Surveillance-Grade Storage
Fitted with a surveillance-rated hard drive sized for continuous write workloads. 4TB provides substantial retention capacity across 8 cameras, and the drive is matched to the recorder's operating environment rather than a repurposed desktop drive.
AXIS Companion VMS Included
Ships ready to run AXIS Companion software, giving operators live viewing, recorded playback, and mobile app access without separate licensing costs. The system is also compatible with AXIS Camera Station for sites that need to scale into a more feature-rich management platform later.
Gigabit Uplink for High-Resolution Streams
A single gigabit RJ45 uplink port connects the recorder to the wider network or internet. This provides sufficient throughput for multi-camera high-definition streams reaching the VMS and for remote viewing over a local network or VPN without bottlenecking at the recorder.
Compact, Flexible Form Factor
At 180 x 180 x 53 mm and approximately 1.35 kg, the unit fits in a back-of-house cabinet, on a shelf, or mounts via the optional AXIS TS3001 Recorder Mount or AXIS TW8100 Rack Mount. The side-mounted USB 3.0 port adds external backup or export capability without opening the unit.
5-Year Warranty
Axis backs the S3008 Mk II with a 5-year warranty, which is notably longer than the standard 2-3 year cover common on competing compact recorders. For site owners who cannot afford system downtime, this reduces the total cost of ownership over the deployment life.
Who Buys This Model
- Small Business Operators: Retail stores, cafes, and medical practices running up to 8 Axis cameras who want a single-unit system that includes PoE switching, storage, and VMS without deploying a separate server.
- Axis-Certified Installers: Integrators specifying a clean, AXIS-native solution for single-site clients where AXIS Companion is the target VMS and the install needs to be reproducible and supportable under a 5-year warranty.
- Multi-Site Operators: Organisations managing several small locations independently, where each site runs its own S3008 Mk II and footage is accessed centrally via the AXIS Companion mobile app or remote login.
- IT Managers Expanding Existing Systems: Sites with an established Axis infrastructure that need to add recording capacity or extend the PoE network to a secondary area without rewiring back to a central NVR.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS S3008 Mk II delivers a genuinely tidy installation story for small Axis deployments. The built-in 124 W PoE budget, surveillance-grade 4TB drive, Companion VMS compatibility, and gigabit uplink are all integrated into a unit small enough to mount behind a panel door. The 5-year warranty is a standout for a recorder in this class, and dual VMS compatibility with both AXIS Companion and AXIS Camera Station gives the system a credible upgrade path. Supplied through Security Australia, it ships with a mains adapter, power cable, and OAK key ready to go.
Where the S3008 Mk II has clear limits: it is strictly an Axis-ecosystem device. Third-party cameras and AXIS Companion mini cameras are not supported, so it is not suitable for mixed-brand sites. Channel count is fixed at 8, meaning any site expecting to grow beyond 8 cameras should be scoped against a rackmount NVR from the outset. The PoE output is also Class 3 maximum per port, which will not power PoE+ cameras requiring Class 4 or higher.
Before You Buy
Compatibility Note: The S3008 Mk II requires Axis devices running firmware 5.50 or later. AXIS Companion mini cameras and all third-party cameras are explicitly unsupported. Before specifying this recorder, confirm each camera model's firmware version and Companion compatibility on the Axis product page. If the site includes cameras from other brands, a different recording platform will be required.
PoE Budget Planning: The total PoE power budget is 124 W across all 8 ports, and each port supports up to Class 3 (15.4 W maximum per device). If you are running high-power Axis cameras, heaters, or wipers that draw more than Class 3, the S3008 Mk II's PoE output will not be sufficient and a PoE+ switch will be needed alongside a separate NVR.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying up to 8 Axis network cameras (firmware 5.50 or later) and want a single compact unit that combines PoE switching, 4TB storage, and AXIS Companion VMS in one enclosure.
- Good match if: You need to add localised recording and PoE connectivity to a secondary area of a larger Axis site without running cables back to a central NVR - the gigabit uplink keeps it connected to the main network.
- You may need a different model if: Your site runs more than 8 cameras, includes any third-party or Companion mini cameras, or requires PoE+ power per port - a dedicated rackmount NVR with a separate managed PoE switch will serve those requirements better.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your site runs exclusively Axis cameras (firmware 5.50 or later), you need up to 8 channels, and a single compact unit combining PoE switching, 4TB storage, and Companion VMS is the cleanest solution.
- You may need a different model if: Your deployment exceeds 8 cameras, includes cameras from multiple brands, or requires PoE+ (Class 4) power per port - a rackmount NVR paired with a managed PoE+ switch will handle those requirements at scale.
- Pairs well with: Axis dome or turret network cameras, and optionally a rack enclosure or wall mount bracket for clean physical installation.
Common Questions
-
Does the AXIS S3008 Mk II work with cameras from other brands?
No. The S3008 Mk II is compatible only with Axis devices running firmware 5.50 or later. Third-party cameras are explicitly not supported, and neither are AXIS Companion mini cameras. If your site includes any non-Axis cameras, a different recording platform that supports ONVIF or open integration will be required. -
Will this recorder power PoE+ cameras that draw more than 15.4 W?
No. The built-in PoE ports support IEEE 802.3af/802.3at Type 1, which covers Class 0 through Class 3 devices - up to 15.4 W per port. Cameras or devices requiring PoE+ (Class 4, up to 30 W) will not receive sufficient power from the S3008 Mk II and will need to be connected via a separate PoE+ switch. -
How many cameras can I connect, and what is the total power available?
You can connect up to 8 Axis cameras via the rear PoE ports, with a total shared power budget of 124 W across all 8 ports. If every port is loaded with Class 3 devices at maximum draw, you would be running close to that budget, so confirming individual camera power consumption before specifying the full 8 cameras is recommended. -
Does this recorder require a separate VMS licence?
No, not for AXIS Companion. The S3008 Mk II is designed around AXIS Companion software, which does not carry per-camera licensing fees. It also supports AXIS Camera Station for operators who need a more advanced feature set, though Camera Station licensing terms should be confirmed separately through Security Australia or an Axis partner. -
Can I access recorded footage remotely from my phone?
Yes. AXIS Companion includes a mobile app for both iOS and Android, allowing live viewing and recorded playback from anywhere with an internet connection. Remote access is managed through the AXIS Companion ecosystem and does not require port-forwarding through your router when using the cloud-assisted connection method. -
What is included in the box?
The unit ships with the AXIS S3008 Mk II Recorder, the AXIS Mains Adapter 48 V DC 180 W with power cable, an installation guide, and an OAK key. Rack and wall mounting accessories are sold separately as the AXIS TS3001 Recorder Mount or AXIS TW8100 Rack Mount. -
Is the 4TB drive the only storage option available?
No. The S3008 Mk II is also available in 2TB and 8TB configurations, with weights varying between approximately 1.31 kg (2TB) and 1.45 kg (8TB). The 4TB variant listed here suits most small-to-medium deployments, but if longer retention periods or higher-resolution cameras are planned, the 8TB version may be worth considering. -
Can I use this recorder as additional storage within an existing larger Axis system?
Yes. The S3008 Mk II is explicitly suited for expanding storage and network connectivity in existing Axis systems. It connects to the wider network via its gigabit uplink port and can operate as a localised recording node in a secondary zone, running independently or alongside a larger AXIS Camera Station deployment at the same site.
