Product Overview

Model: AXIS S2224 Mk II

Who This Is For

When a single rack unit needs to carry the full surveillance workload for a mid-to-large site, the AXIS S2224 Mk II delivers it without piecing together separate components. This is a product for IT managers, integrators, and security consultants specifying enterprise-grade recording for commercial buildings, multi-tenancy facilities, logistics hubs, and campus environments. The appliance ships with 24 AXIS Camera Station Pro licences already assigned, an integrated 24-port PoE switch for direct camera connections, and 12TB of onboard storage ready to record from day one. Installers who need a documented, vendor-supported solution with a clean rack footprint will appreciate that power, switching, recording, and software arrive pre-integrated. Organisations running structured IT environments with rack infrastructure will find this fits their procurement and compliance workflows far better than consumer-grade NVR alternatives.

What This Product Actually Does

Integrated 24-Port PoE Switch

The built-in PoE switch eliminates the need for a separate network switch in the rack. Cameras connect directly to the appliance, reducing cabling complexity, cutting hardware costs, and keeping the camera network isolated from the corporate LAN if required.

AXIS Camera Station Pro - 24 Licences Included

All 24 camera licences are pre-assigned and ready to activate. AXIS Camera Station Pro is a full-featured VMS with intelligent search, access control integration, and multi-site management - removing a significant line item from system deployment budgets.

12TB Onboard Storage

12TB of installed storage supports extended retention across all 24 channels without additional configuration at commissioning. The actual retention period depends on resolution, frame rate, and scene activity, so installers should run a storage calculator before finalising camera settings.

Expandable Storage Capacity

Storage can be expanded beyond the 12TB baseline as retention requirements grow or additional cameras are added. This protects the initial capital investment and allows the system to scale alongside operational demands without replacing the core appliance.

Rack-Mount Form Factor

Designed for installation in a standard server rack, the S2224 Mk II fits cleanly into IT rooms and comms cabinets. This matters for sites where surveillance infrastructure must share physical space with corporate IT equipment and meet tidy cabling and audit standards.

Unified, Pre-Validated Platform

Hardware, software, switching, and storage are specified and tested together by Axis. This reduces integration risk for installers and gives end-customers a single vendor support path - relevant for organisations with IT governance requirements or service-level obligations.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial integrators: Deploying a turnkey recording solution for a 20-24 camera site where the client expects a single-vendor, rack-ready system with software included and no separate switch procurement.
  • IT managers at mid-size organisations: Responsible for both network infrastructure and physical security, who need the surveillance system to live in the server room and meet the same hardware standards as other rack equipment.
  • Facilities and property managers: Overseeing multi-building or campus sites who want a documented, licence-included platform with expandable storage rather than managing perpetual-licence renewals across disparate hardware.
  • Government and institutional procurement teams: Specifying Axis-branded end-to-end systems for compliance, audit, and warranty simplicity across a single vendor relationship.
  • Security consultants on design-and-construct projects: Nominating a single line item for recording, switching, storage, and VMS rather than speccing four separate components and managing compatibility across brands.

Honest Assessment

The AXIS S2224 Mk II does several things well: it consolidates recording hardware, PoE switching, VMS licensing, and storage into a single rack unit backed by a single vendor. For 24-channel deployments where rack space, support simplicity, and pre-validated integration matter, this removes a meaningful amount of commissioning risk. The included AXIS Camera Station Pro licences represent genuine value at this channel count, and the expandable storage path means the appliance does not become a bottleneck as retention requirements increase. Where it will not be the right fit is on smaller deployments - a 4 to 8 camera residential or small business install does not need rack infrastructure of this class, and a desktop or tower NVR will serve that use case more cost-effectively. Sites requiring more than 24 channels from a single appliance will also need to assess whether channel expansion or a multi-server architecture is more appropriate. The S2224 Mk II is stocked by Security Australia as part of the broader Axis enterprise product range.

Before You Buy

Storage Planning: 12TB across 24 channels at full resolution and continuous recording will yield shorter retention than many sites expect. Before commissioning, run the Axis storage calculator with your intended resolution, frame rate, and recording schedule for each camera. If your compliance or insurance requirements specify 30 or 90 days of retention, confirm the storage expansion path is costed into the project before installation begins.

PoE Budget: The integrated 24-port PoE switch has a finite total power budget shared across all ports. High-power cameras - including PTZ units, multi-sensor cameras, or models with integrated IR illuminators - draw more per port than standard fixed cameras. Calculate your total camera PoE draw before finalising the camera selection to ensure the switch budget is not exceeded across a full 24-port deployment.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are deploying up to 24 IP cameras on a site with a server room or comms cabinet, and need recording, PoE switching, storage, and VMS licensing consolidated into a single rack-mounted unit.
  • Good match if: Your client or procurement team requires a fully Axis-native system with included AXIS Camera Station Pro licences, vendor-backed hardware, and an expandable storage path for future retention growth.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site has fewer than 8 cameras or has no rack infrastructure - a desktop or compact NVR will deliver the same recording functionality at significantly lower cost and without the physical space requirements of rack deployment.

Real-World Scenarios

Commercial Office Building

A 10-storey commercial building with cameras across car parks, lobbies, lift lobbies, and rooftop access points. The integrator mounts the S2224 Mk II in the comms room, connects all 24 cameras directly to the integrated PoE switch, and activates the included Camera Station Pro licences on day one.

Logistics and Distribution Site

A warehouse and distribution centre with loading docks, internal aisles, and perimeter coverage across 22 cameras. The rack appliance sits in the on-site IT room alongside server infrastructure, giving the site's IT team a familiar management environment through the AXIS Camera Station Pro interface.

School or University Campus

An education facility with cameras across entry points, corridors, and outdoor walkways. The appliance meets the facility's requirement for rack-mounted infrastructure, and the expandable storage path supports extended retention as the institution's compliance obligations grow over time.

Retail Centre or Shopping Precinct

A retail precinct management company specifying a single recording platform across 20 cameras covering tenancy entrances, common areas, and back-of-house. The included VMS licences reduce the total cost of the system, and a single vendor support path simplifies the client's service agreement.

Government or Council Facility

A local council depot or civic administration building where procurement requires a fully documented, warranty-supported system from a named vendor. The S2224 Mk II's all-in-one configuration simplifies the asset register and audit trail compared to multi-brand component builds.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a 24-channel rack appliance where recording hardware, PoE switching, VMS licensing, and storage are consolidated into a single Axis-native unit with an expandable storage path and a single vendor support relationship.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site has fewer than 10 cameras or has no rack infrastructure - a compact desktop NVR will cover those deployments at significantly lower cost and without the physical footprint requirements of a rack appliance.
  • Pairs well with: Axis fixed dome, turret, bullet, and PTZ network cameras connected via the integrated PoE switch, along with Axis access control hardware managed through AXIS Camera Station Pro on the same platform.

Common Questions

  1. Does the AXIS S2224 Mk II include VMS software licences, or do I need to purchase them separately?

Yes. The S2224 Mk II ships with 24 AXIS Camera Station Pro licences included in the package. These cover all 24 channels and are ready to activate at commissioning. This is a meaningful cost difference compared to purchasing a bare NVR and then sourcing 24 individual VMS licences separately from the hardware.
  2. Does this appliance work with non-Axis cameras?

It can work with ONVIF-compatible third-party cameras, but the integrated platform is designed and validated around Axis cameras. Full feature support, AI analytics compatibility, and vendor-backed troubleshooting apply to Axis cameras. Third-party camera functionality through AXIS Camera Station Pro may be limited depending on the camera model and firmware.
  3. Will 12TB be enough storage for 24 cameras?

It depends entirely on your configuration. 12TB across 24 channels recording continuously at high resolution and full frame rate will yield a shorter retention window than the same storage used with motion-triggered recording, lower resolution streams, or a sub-stream recording strategy. Run the Axis storage calculator with your specific camera models, resolution targets, frame rates, and recording schedule before finalising the system design.
  4. Can the storage be expanded after installation?

Yes. The S2224 Mk II supports storage expansion beyond the 12TB factory configuration. This allows sites to increase retention capacity as camera counts grow, compliance requirements change, or operational needs evolve - without replacing the appliance itself. Confirm the specific expansion options available through Security Australia before finalising your storage planning.
  5. What does the integrated 24-port PoE switch actually do for an installation?

It eliminates the need for a separate managed PoE switch in the rack. Cameras connect directly to the appliance's switch ports, which carry both data and power over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable per camera. This reduces hardware costs, simplifies cabling, and creates a contained camera network that does not need to share switch infrastructure with corporate IT traffic unless you choose to configure it that way.
  6. Is AXIS Camera Station Pro different from standard AXIS Camera Station?

Yes. AXIS Camera Station Pro is the advanced tier of the Axis VMS platform. It includes expanded analytics support, more sophisticated intelligent search capabilities, access control integration, and multi-site management features not available in the base version. For a 24-channel commercial deployment, the Pro tier is the appropriate licence level, and having it included with the hardware removes a separate procurement step.
  7. Does this appliance require a rack cabinet, or can it be installed on a shelf?

The S2224 Mk II is a rack-mount appliance designed for installation in a standard 19-inch server rack with rack-mount rails. While physically it could be placed on a surface, proper installation uses rack rails to ensure airflow, physical security, and mechanical support. If your site has no rack infrastructure, a desktop NVR form factor is a more practical fit.
