Product Overview

Model: AXIS Q3546-LVE

Who This Is For

When outdoor coverage with precise framing and low-light performance is the priority, the AXIS Q3546-LVE is the camera installers reach for. Designed for demanding outdoor environments, this 4MP AI-powered dome suits commercial car parks, building perimeters, transport hubs, educational campuses, and retail exteriors where fixed cameras need to cover variable distances without being repositioned. The varifocal lens allows the angle of view to be set accurately at install time - useful when the exact standoff distance is only known on site. IK10 vandal resistance and IP66 weather sealing make it suitable for exposed mounting positions where tampering or weather exposure is a genuine concern. Lightfinder 2.0 keeps footage usable in low ambient light, while AXIS Object Analytics classifies humans and vehicles at the edge - reducing the false alarm load on operators and NVR storage alike.

What This Camera Actually Does

Varifocal Lens Flexibility

The motorised varifocal lens lets installers dial in the exact angle of view during commissioning rather than being locked to a fixed focal length. This means the same camera model works across a wide range of standoff distances without swapping lenses or ordering site-specific variants.

Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Imaging

Lightfinder 2.0 is Axis's second-generation low-light sensor technology. It produces colour footage in conditions where most cameras switch to black and white or show heavy grain - practically useful in car parks, covered walkways, and outdoor areas with minimal artificial lighting.

Forensic WDR

Forensic WDR handles scenes with extreme contrast - such as a brightly lit exit against a dark interior, or a camera facing morning sun across an entry point. Both the bright and shadowed areas of the frame remain usable simultaneously, preserving detail where standard WDR would blow out highlights or crush shadows.

OptimizedIR Illumination

OptimizedIR automatically adjusts infrared output to match the lens position, avoiding the overexposed centre and washed-out foreground that fixed IR arrays produce. As the varifocal lens zooms in or out, the IR pattern adjusts accordingly so footage stays evenly lit at any focal length.

AXIS Object Analytics (Edge AI)

AI-based human and vehicle classification runs directly on the camera - no server-side analytics licence required. This filters out irrelevant motion triggers such as trees, shadows, and animals, so operators receive notifications tied to actual people or vehicles rather than environmental noise.

Who Buys This Model

  • Commercial property managers: Specifying perimeter cameras on multi-tenant sites where a single camera model needs to cover varying distances across car parks, loading areas, and building entries without multiple lens variants.
  • Security integrators on education campuses: Installing across large outdoor areas where IK10 vandal resistance is a mandatory spec and coverage zones change between design and physical install.
  • Transport and logistics operators: Covering yard entrances, loading dock approaches, and gated access points where Forensic WDR handles headlight glare and Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour imagery through night shifts.
  • IT-managed security teams: Running Axis Camera Management or AXIS Camera Station deployments where AXIS Object Analytics runs natively on the camera without additional analytics server licensing.

Honest Assessment

The Q3546-LVE earns its place in commercial installations through the combination of a motorised varifocal lens, IK10 housing, and genuinely capable low-light imaging. Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR work together in a way that reduces the number of locations where supplemental lighting would otherwise be necessary. The edge-based AI classification is a practical differentiator - it runs without subscription fees or additional hardware and meaningfully reduces nuisance alerts in outdoor environments. Available through Security Australia, the Q3546-LVE is priced at the upper end of the fixed-dome segment. Where budget is the primary driver and the site doesn't require AI classification or the optical performance of Lightfinder 2.0, a standard 4MP outdoor dome will cover the basics at lower cost. For sites needing wide-area coverage from a single mounting point, a PTZ or multi-sensor camera will outperform any fixed dome at this price point.

Before You Buy

Lens Adjustment at Commissioning: The motorised varifocal lens is set remotely via the camera's web interface or VMS during commissioning - it is not a manual zoom ring. Confirm your VMS supports remote focus and zoom for the Q3546-LVE before install, and allow time during commissioning to frame each camera position individually. Rushing this step at height results in misaligned coverage zones that are difficult to correct later.

PoE Budget Check: Confirm your switch port can supply sufficient PoE before installing. The Q3546-LVE requires PoE power - verify your switch or injector delivers adequate wattage per port, particularly if the installation includes IR at full output in cold temperatures where power draw increases. Do not assume a basic unmanaged PoE switch provides consistent power across all ports under full load.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are covering an outdoor area where camera standoff distances are finalised on site - the motorised varifocal lens means the framing can be adjusted precisely during commissioning rather than requiring a return visit or lens swap.
  • Good match if: The site has exposed or accessible mounting positions and IK10 vandal resistance is a project requirement - the Q3546-LVE's rated housing meets that specification without needing an add-on guard or cage.
  • You may need a different model if: The primary requirement is covering a large outdoor area - a car park, oval, or wide yard - from a single mounting point. A PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera will deliver far broader coverage than any fixed varifocal dome at this focal length range.

Real-World Scenarios

Car Park Perimeter

Mounted at the entry boom gate where headlights hit the lens directly each morning. Forensic WDR keeps the driver's face and number plate readable without washing out the surrounding lane - footage holds evidentiary detail at the moments that matter most.

School Campus Exterior

Installed under the eave of a covered walkway facing an open oval. IK10 housing handles the exposed position. AXIS Object Analytics filters out ball movement and bird activity so the monitoring station only receives alerts tied to people - reducing operator fatigue across a multi-camera campus deployment.

Logistics Yard - Night Shift

Covering a loading dock approach that operates through the night with minimal lighting between truck bays. Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR maintain colour identification of personnel and vehicles without requiring the site to invest in supplemental lighting across the yard.

Retail Centre Exterior

Positioned at a service corridor exit where coverage distance was unknown until the fitout was complete. The motorised varifocal lens allowed the integrator to set the exact angle of view remotely during commissioning, without a return visit to swap lenses or reposition the mount.

Healthcare Facility Grounds

Covering an outdoor courtyard with a mix of shaded seating and direct sunlight. Forensic WDR manages the contrast between bright open areas and shadowed alcoves in a single frame, without the operator needing to switch between camera views to assess the full space.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: The site requires outdoor vandal-resistant coverage with AI classification running at the edge, variable standoff distances that need lens tuning at install, and strong low-light performance without supplemental lighting.
  • You may need a different model if: The priority is covering large open areas from a single camera position - a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera covers far more ground than a fixed varifocal dome and is better suited to wide-area outdoor monitoring requirements.
  • Pairs well with: An Axis-compatible NVR or VMS with AXIS Camera Management support, and a managed PoE switch with per-port power monitoring to maintain consistent performance across a multi-camera installation.

Common Questions

  1. Does the varifocal lens need to be adjusted manually on the camera body?

No. The Q3546-LVE uses a motorised varifocal lens that is adjusted remotely through the camera's web interface or a compatible VMS during commissioning. There is no manual zoom or focus ring to turn on the housing itself. This means an installer can fine-tune the angle of view and focus from ground level or a laptop without touching the camera again after mounting - a meaningful time saving on multi-camera projects.
  2. Will this camera work in a location with no external lighting at night?

Yes, within the IR illumination range. OptimizedIR provides infrared illumination that adjusts automatically to match the lens focal position, maintaining an even exposure across the scene rather than a bright centre with dark edges. Lightfinder 2.0 further extends colour imaging into very low ambient light conditions. For locations with no light at all beyond the camera's IR range, footage will be in black and white at distance - this is true of any IR camera regardless of sensor technology.
  3. What does IK10 actually mean for this camera?

IK10 is the highest rating in the IEC 62262 impact protection standard, indicating the housing can withstand an impact of 20 joules - roughly equivalent to a 5kg object dropped from 40cm. In practice, this means the dome is engineered to resist deliberate strike attempts with common hand tools and incidental impacts in exposed locations. It does not mean the camera is indestructible, but IK10 is the specification most commercial and government security projects require for exposed outdoor dome installations.
  4. Does AXIS Object Analytics require a separate licence or server to run?

No. AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the Q3546-LVE's onboard processor - no external analytics server or additional software licence is required for human and vehicle classification. The application is included with the camera and configured through the camera's web interface. This is one of the practical cost advantages of edge AI over server-based analytics platforms, which typically charge per-channel licensing fees that accumulate across a large deployment. Security Australia stocks the Q3546-LVE as a standalone unit with analytics included.
  5. Is this camera compatible with third-party VMS platforms?

Yes, in most cases. Axis cameras use ONVIF-compliant protocols and RTSP streaming, which are supported by the majority of enterprise and mid-market VMS platforms including Milestone, Genetec, Avigilon, and others. Native AXIS Camera Station integration offers the most complete feature access including remote lens control and analytics configuration. Confirm AXIS Object Analytics event outputs are supported by your specific VMS version if you intend to use classification-based alerts within a third-party platform.
  6. Does this camera require PoE+ or will standard PoE work?

Verify the specific power draw against your switch specification before purchasing. The Q3546-LVE is a PoE-powered camera, and while many Axis outdoor dome cameras operate within IEEE 802.3af (15.4W) limits, IR illumination at full output and motorised lens movement can increase momentary power demand. Check the Axis product datasheet for the confirmed maximum power consumption figure and match it to your switch's per-port budget - particularly on older or budget PoE switches where per-port output may be lower than the advertised total wattage suggests.
