Product Overview
Model: AXIS Q3536-LVE
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying outdoor surveillance for high-value or high-risk sites will find the AXIS Q3536-LVE built for exactly that application. This is a 4 MP outdoor dome engineered for environments where image quality cannot be compromised - think transport hubs, critical infrastructure perimeters, large commercial properties, and correctional or government facilities. The motorized varifocal lens covering 11.3-29.4mm means installers can dial in the field of view precisely from ground level after mounting, rather than climbing back to the camera to adjust a fixed lens. Combined with ARTPEC-8 deep learning processing, IK10+ impact resistance, and a -50 to 60 degree Celsius operating range, this camera is specified where longevity, forensic-grade image detail, and on-camera intelligence are non-negotiable requirements. It suits integrators delivering enterprise-grade systems who need edge analytics without relying on server-side processing.
What This Camera Actually Does
Motorized Varifocal Lens (11.3-29.4mm)
The lens adjusts remotely via software, so installers set the exact field of view after the camera is physically mounted and secured. No tools, no re-climbing. Changing coverage zones later is equally straightforward without touching the hardware.
Lightfinder 2.0 with OptimizedIR
Lightfinder 2.0 retains colour at very low light levels rather than switching to monochrome early. When darkness is complete, OptimizedIR provides built-in infrared illumination, and the IR-shielded dome prevents IR light from reflecting back off rain and snow and washing out the image.
Forensic WDR at up to 120dB
High dynamic range scenes - like a vehicle entering a shadowed loading dock from bright daylight - are handled by capturing both extremes simultaneously. At 120dB, this avoids blown-out backgrounds or silhouetted subjects that render footage useless for identification.
ARTPEC-8 Deep Learning on the Edge
The dedicated deep learning processing unit (DLPU) runs AXIS Object Analytics directly on the camera. It classifies humans and vehicles - including vehicle type - without sending data to a server for processing. This reduces server load, latency, and infrastructure cost for large deployments.
IK10+ Impact Resistance and Cybersecurity
The metal casing is rated IK10+, the highest impact protection classification, plus intrusion and shock detection sensors alert the system if someone tampers with the unit. Axis Edge Vault with a FIPS 140-2 level 2 certified TPM protects credentials and prevents unauthorised access at the hardware level.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Enterprise Contracts: The ARTPEC-8 DLPU and ACAP v4 support mean the camera can run custom deep learning applications from Axis partners, making it suitable for clients with specific detection or classification requirements beyond standard motion triggers.
- Government and Critical Infrastructure Teams: FIPS 140-2 level 2 certified TPM and Axis Edge Vault are specified in environments with formal cybersecurity compliance requirements. The -50 to 60 degree Celsius rating covers exposed outdoor installations in extreme climates.
- Transport and Logistics Operators: Loading docks, rail corridors, and port perimeters involve high-contrast lighting and constant vehicle movement. Forensic WDR at up to 120dB combined with vehicle classification through AXIS Object Analytics handles both challenges without separate analytics hardware.
- Installers Managing Multi-Zone Perimeters: The motorized varifocal lens and multi-view streaming with up to 8 individually cropped view areas allow 1 camera to cover several monitored zones simultaneously, reducing camera count on large perimeter runs.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS Q3536-LVE does a small number of things at a level most cameras in the outdoor dome category do not reach. The IR-shielded dome solving the rain and snow IR reflection problem is a real engineering improvement that shows up directly in footage quality during weather events. Forensic WDR at up to 120dB, ARTPEC-8 edge analytics, and an IK10+ metal housing combine into a camera that justifies its position in a premium specification. The motorized varifocal lens covering 11.3-29.4mm gives installers genuine flexibility at commissioning and when site requirements change. Available through Security Australia, this model is suited to demanding outdoor applications where forensic image quality and on-camera intelligence are the primary brief. Where it is not the right tool: applications requiring active PTZ tracking across a wide horizontal arc should look at a proper PTZ camera instead. Budget-sensitive residential or small retail deployments will find better value in a fixed-lens outdoor turret from the same range.
Before You Buy
Power Requirements: The Q3536-LVE supports redundant power input, but confirm your switch or injector delivers sufficient PoE wattage before installation. The motorized lens and ARTPEC-8 processor draw more power than a standard fixed-lens dome, and undersized PoE budget is a common cause of intermittent restarts on higher-spec Axis cameras.
Audio Configuration: The Q3536-LVE supports two-way audio streaming but requires an external microphone connected via the audio input - there is no built-in microphone capsule inside the camera housing. If live audio monitoring is required at the installation point, plan for an external mic in your cable run and mounting design before the camera goes up.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are specifying outdoor coverage on a site with difficult lighting - vehicle entrances, covered walkways, or areas that transition between shade and direct sunlight - where Forensic WDR at up to 120dB will preserve usable image detail that a standard WDR camera would lose.
- Good match if: Your client requires on-camera classification of humans and vehicles without investing in a separate analytics server, and the installation involves an outdoor dome mounting position on an eave, soffit, or pole arm.
- You may need a different model if: Coverage requirements involve tracking subjects across a wide open area in real time - a motorized PTZ camera with auto-tracking capability will serve that scenario better. Security Australia stocks PTZ options suited to wide-area active monitoring.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a fixed-position outdoor dome with motorized varifocal flexibility, forensic-grade WDR, deep learning edge analytics, and enterprise cybersecurity compliance in a single unit.
- You may need a different model if: Active subject tracking across a wide open area is the primary requirement - a motorized PTZ camera with auto-tracking delivers that capability far more effectively than a fixed-dome with digital PTZ.
- Pairs well with: A PoE switch with sufficient per-port wattage budget, a network video recorder supporting H.265 and ONVIF Profile T, and an edge storage card for local redundancy during network interruptions.
Common Questions
-
Does the AXIS Q3536-LVE have a built-in microphone for two-way audio?
No. The Q3536-LVE supports two-way full duplex audio streaming but does not have a built-in microphone capsule. Audio input requires an external microphone connected via the balanced or unbalanced external mic input on the camera. If live audio monitoring or two-way communication is needed at the camera location, an external microphone must be included in the installation plan and cable run. -
Will this camera work with my existing VMS?
Yes, in most cases. The Q3536-LVE supports ONVIF Profile S, Profile T, Profile G, and Profile M, which covers the integration standards used by the majority of video management systems on the market. It also provides a VAPIX API for direct integration with Axis-native platforms. Check your VMS vendor's compatibility list for ARTPEC-8 camera support if you are running an older platform version. -
How does the motorized varifocal lens work, and can the focal length be adjusted after installation?
Yes, the focal length adjusts remotely via the camera's web interface or compatible VMS. The 11.3-29.4mm range covers the transition between a wider scene view and a longer, narrower coverage zone. This is done electronically after the camera is physically secured - no physical access to the camera is required. The change takes effect immediately, and the camera can be refocused and field-of-view adjusted at any time without an on-site visit. The built-in gyro sensor also assists with leveling and auto rotation at initial setup. -
What exactly does AXIS Object Analytics classify, and does it require a separate licence?
AXIS Object Analytics is preinstalled on the Q3536-LVE at no additional cost and runs entirely on the ARTPEC-8 DLPU. It classifies humans and vehicles, and within the vehicle category it distinguishes between vehicle types. Detection rules can be configured per zone - for example, triggering only on vehicles entering a specific polygon area rather than all movement. The ACAP v4 platform also supports additional third-party deep learning applications from Axis partners if more specialised classification is needed. -
Does this camera perform well in fog or heavy rain?
Yes, better than most outdoor domes in the same class. The electronic defogging feature processes the image to recover contrast lost in fog or haze. The IR-shielded dome specifically addresses the problem of IR light reflecting back off rain droplets on the dome surface, which is what causes the bright wash or "halo" effect seen on standard IR domes in wet conditions. Together these features maintain usable footage in weather conditions that would degrade image quality on cameras without these features. -
What does the FIPS 140-2 level 2 TPM certification mean for a security installation?
It means the camera stores its cryptographic credentials in a hardware-secured module that meets a formally audited US federal standard for cryptographic security. In practice, this prevents an attacker who physically obtains the camera from extracting credentials or cloning the device identity. For government, defence, utilities, and financial sector installations where procurement or compliance frameworks specify hardware-level credential protection, this certification satisfies that requirement. The Axis Edge Vault works alongside the TPM to further protect the secure boot chain and prevent unauthorised firmware or application execution. The Q3536-LVE is part of the Security Australia range for clients with these requirements.
