AXIS Q1808-LE 4K/10MP Outdoor Fixed, 12.48MM Vf Lens
The AXIS Q1808-LE delivers 4K/10MP outdoor surveillance for demanding long-range and wide-area monitoring applications where image detail at distance is non-negotiable. Built around a large 4/3" sensor with Lightfinder 2.0, it captures usable colour footage at near-zero lux, while the motorised varifocal 12-48mm lens allows precise remote zoom and focus without physically accessing the camera. Powered via PoE, with a PoE-out port to feed connected devices from a single cable run.
Why This Model
- Large-format 4/3" sensor: Compared to smaller 1/2" or 1/3" sensors, this larger chip collects significantly more light per pixel, producing cleaner, more detailed images at distance and in low-light without relying solely on IR.
- Remote zoom and focus via motorised varifocal lens: The 12-48mm lens adjusts remotely through software, so installers and operators can fine-tune the field of view from the head end - no ladder, no site revisit.
- PoE-out port: Allows a second device (such as an access reader or additional camera) to be powered directly from the Q1808-LE, reducing cabling runs and switch port requirements at the installation point.

Product Overview
Model: AXIS Q1808-LE
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying long-range outdoor surveillance where image detail at distance is non-negotiable will find the AXIS Q1808-LE built around exactly that requirement. Fitted with a 12-48mm varifocal lens on a large 4/3" sensor, it covers wide entry points at full 4K resolution - then zooms in remotely without anyone touching the housing. The ARTPEC-8 processor with a dedicated deep learning processing unit means on-camera analytics run without taxing your VMS, and Lightfinder 2.0 holds colour detail down to 0.02 lux. This is a camera for integrators commissioning critical infrastructure, transport hubs, logistics yards, or high-value commercial sites where standard 2MP or 4MP cameras simply cannot deliver the identification quality required. The PoE-out port also allows a second edge device to be powered from the camera itself, reducing cabling runs at awkward locations.
What This Product Actually Does
4K on a 4/3" Sensor
The 4/3" CMOS sensor is physically larger than sensors in most network cameras. That size captures significantly more light per pixel, producing 4K footage with far less noise at low illumination - particularly useful at long focal lengths where smaller sensors degrade quickly.
Remote Zoom and Focus - 12-48mm
The varifocal 12-48mm lens adjusts remotely via P-Iris control. Installers can set and refine the field of view and focus from the VMS interface after the camera is mounted - no ladder required for post-install tweaks. Horizontal coverage spans 90 degrees down to 21 degrees.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Performance
Colour imaging holds to 0.02 lux at F1.7, and black-and-white extends to 0.004 lux. Combined with the IR illumination that enables 0 lux operation, the camera maintains usable footage in near-total darkness without switching to washed-out infrared-only mode prematurely.
Forensic WDR up to 120 dB
Entrances and gatehouse positions with direct sunlight behind subjects are a known failure point for most cameras. Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB maintains detail simultaneously in the brightest and darkest areas of the frame - useful for vehicle and pedestrian ID at exposed entry points.
ARTPEC-8 with Deep Learning Processing Unit
The onboard DLPU runs analytics directly at the camera edge - offloading processing from your server. This matters in large deployments where dozens of cameras sending analytics events to a central server can create processing bottlenecks. Applications from the AXIS Camera Application Platform run natively on this hardware.
PoE-Out and Edge Vault
The PoE-out port lets the Q1808-LE power a second compatible device - an access point, intercom, or sensor - from the single cable feeding the camera. Axis Edge Vault provides hardware-based cryptographic storage, protecting device identity, credentials, and application integrity at the hardware level.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Critical Infrastructure: Airports, utilities, and data centres where the DLPU enables onboard analytics and Axis Edge Vault satisfies cybersecurity compliance requirements.
- Logistics and Freight Operators: Loading docks and yard perimeters where 4K at 60fps captures vehicle movement and identification detail across long approach distances with the 12-48mm lens dialled to tele end.
- Transport and Highways Departments: Fixed roadway positions where Forensic WDR at 120 dB handles direct headlight glare and the 4/3" sensor delivers identification-grade resolution at range.
- High-Security Commercial Sites: Corporate campuses and industrial facilities running AXIS Camera Station or third-party VMS where up to 20 concurrent streams and 8 cropped view areas from a single camera reduce total camera count.
Honest Assessment
The Q1808-LE does a small number of things at a level most network cameras cannot match: low-light colour retention at 0.02 lux with a large sensor, 4K at 60fps, remote lens adjustment across a 4x zoom range, and onboard deep learning running from dedicated silicon rather than shared CPU cycles. The PoE-out port genuinely reduces cabling complexity at remote mounting locations. These are measurable advantages in demanding outdoor environments where image quality at distance determines whether footage is usable in an investigation or not. Where this camera is not the right tool: if wide-area situational awareness rather than long-range identification is the requirement, a multi-sensor panoramic or fisheye camera covers more ground per unit. If budget is the primary constraint, this sits firmly in the professional-grade price tier - available through Security Australia - and should be specified where the application justifies it, not used as a general-purpose outdoor camera.
Before You Buy
PoE Budget: The Q1808-LE requires IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++) to power the camera and simultaneously supply power via the PoE-out port. Confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3bt before specifying. Standard 802.3af or 802.3at switches will power the camera but PoE-out to a downstream device will not be available.
Lens Variant Selection: This listing covers the 12-48mm varifocal. A separate 50-150mm tele lens variant exists for extreme long-distance applications. Confirm your target distance and required horizontal field of view before ordering - swapping lens variants after installation is not field-serviceable without returning the unit.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need identification-grade 4K at range in a mixed-light outdoor environment where Forensic WDR at 120 dB and Lightfinder 2.0 at 0.02 lux colour are required simultaneously.
- Good match if: Your deployment requires onboard deep learning analytics running independently of the server, and you need remote zoom and focus commissioning without physical access to the mounted housing.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is wide-area situational awareness across a large open space rather than long-range narrow-field identification - a multi-sensor panoramic camera covering 180 or 360 degrees would serve that scenario more effectively.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your application requires identification-grade 4K at range, onboard deep learning analytics, and remote lens commissioning in a single outdoor housing - particularly where cybersecurity compliance drives the Axis Edge Vault requirement.
- You may need a different model if: The requirement is wide-area coverage of a large open space from a single mounting point - a multi-sensor panoramic camera covering 180 or 360 degrees would provide more total coverage per cable run than this narrow-to-medium field unit.
- Pairs well with: A PoE++ managed switch with VLAN capability for network segmentation, and a high-channel NVR or VMS server with H.265 decoding to handle multiple 4K streams efficiently.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera record in 4K at full frame rate, or does resolution drop with higher frame rates?
Yes - the Q1808-LE records at full 3840x2160 (4K) at up to 60fps in 4K mode on both 50Hz and 60Hz systems. In 4:3 mode at 3712x2784 (10MP), the maximum frame rate is 30fps. You do not have to choose between full resolution and smooth motion in 4K. -
What PoE standard does this camera require, and will my existing switch work?
The camera requires IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++) to operate and simultaneously supply power via the PoE-out port. Standard 802.3af (15.4W) or 802.3at (30W) switches will power the camera in most configurations but the downstream PoE-out function will not be available. Confirm your switch's per-port power budget before deploying. -
Will this camera work for identifying faces and vehicle plates at distance in a single fixed position?
It depends on the distance and your required DORI level. The 4/3" sensor at 10MP with the 12-48mm lens at its tele end produces high pixel density per metre at range - but achieving recognition or identification distances requires careful planning against DORI standards for your specific scenario. For very long distances beyond 50 metres at identification level, the 50-150mm tele lens variant may be more appropriate. -
Does the deep learning processing unit run analytics independently, or does it require server-side processing?
Yes - the DLPU on the ARTPEC-8 chip runs analytics independently at the camera edge. AXIS Camera Application Platform applications execute directly on the camera without sending video to a server for processing. This reduces network bandwidth consumption and server load, and analytics events fire even if the VMS connection is temporarily interrupted. -
What does Axis Edge Vault actually do, and is it relevant for commercial deployments?
Yes, it is relevant wherever device identity and credential security matters. Edge Vault is a hardware-based cryptographic module that stores the camera's unique identity, certificates, and application keys in tamper-resistant silicon. This prevents credential extraction even if an attacker gains physical access to the unit - relevant for government, critical infrastructure, and any site with cybersecurity compliance requirements. The Q1808-LE stocked by Security Australia includes Edge Vault as a standard hardware feature, not a firmware option. -
How does Forensic WDR differ from standard WDR, and does it affect frame rate or resolution?
Forensic WDR processes exposures to maintain detail in both highlight and shadow areas simultaneously - up to 120 dB depending on scene conditions. Standard WDR implementations often reduce frame rate or apply artefacts to moving subjects. The Q1808-LE's shutter speed range with WDR active is 1/22000 s to 2 s in 4K mode, meaning fast-moving subjects are handled without the motion blur common in some WDR implementations. -
Can the camera stream different resolutions to different destinations simultaneously?
Yes. Up to 20 unique and configurable streams can run concurrently, and up to 8 individually cropped view areas can each be delivered as separate streams. A typical deployment might send a high-resolution H.265 stream to the NVR for recording, a lower-resolution stream to a monitoring dashboard, and additional cropped streams to specific operator workstations - all from the one camera with no external splitter or server-side transcoding.
