Quick Buying Summary

When long-range outdoor surveillance with precision optics is the requirement, the Axis Q1805-LE delivers HDTV 1080p imaging across an exceptional 4.3-137mm motorised varifocal range, making it suited to perimeter monitoring, car parks, and wide-area installations where flexibility and detail matter. It replaces the Q1785-LE and requires a PoE-capable switch or injector for power.

Why This Model

  • 80m IR night vision: Long-throw infrared illumination means targets at the edge of a wide perimeter remain clearly visible after dark without supplementary lighting.
  • 4.3-137mm motorised zoom: An extreme optical range lets installers dial in the exact field of view from ground level - from broad area coverage to tight facial or plate detail - without physically repositioning the camera.
  • Axis Zipstream with WDR: Zipstream cuts storage and bandwidth demands on long-run deployments, while Wide Dynamic Range keeps detail readable in high-contrast scenes such as entry points with bright backlight.

Product Overview

Model: Q1805-LE

Who This Is For

When long-distance identification across a wide zoom range is the defining requirement, the Axis Q1805-LE is built for that brief. Its 4.3-137mm motorised lens covers everything from a broad scene overview down to a tightly framed subject at extreme distance - all from a single fixed mounting point. Designed as the replacement for the Q1785-LE, this outdoor bullet camera suits security integrators specifying perimeter protection at critical infrastructure sites, ports, power facilities, border crossings, and large industrial compounds where the camera position cannot move but the viewing angle must. The 80m IR range extends usefulness into complete darkness, and Zipstream compression reduces storage and bandwidth load without sacrificing image integrity. If your project demands one camera that can survey a wide approach and then zoom to licence-plate or face-level detail on demand, this is the model to evaluate.

What This Camera Actually Does

32x Motorised Zoom Lens

The 4.3-137mm lens provides approximately 32x optical zoom, remotely adjustable from a VMS or browser. Operators can widen to survey a full perimeter gate or narrow to fill the frame with a face or vehicle plate hundreds of metres away - from the same fixed housing, without touching the camera.

80m Infrared Illumination

Built-in IR reaches 80 metres in total darkness. For remote sites with no ambient lighting - unmanned substations, rural fencing lines, dark loading yards - the camera continues producing usable 1080p footage without any external lighting infrastructure.

Wide Dynamic Range

WDR handles scenes with extreme contrast - a vehicle emerging from a dark tunnel into full sunlight, or a gate entry with direct backlight. Both bright and shadowed areas remain visible in a single frame, preventing the overexposed or silhouetted images that standard sensors produce in those conditions.

Zipstream Compression

Axis Zipstream analyses each frame and reduces bitrate in areas with no activity, then restores full detail when motion occurs. On a long-focal deployment where most of the frame is static background, Zipstream can cut storage consumption substantially without reducing recorded evidence quality.

Single-Cable PoE Installation

Power over Ethernet means one Cat5e or Cat6 cable delivers both network connectivity and power to the camera. For rooftop or elevated pole installations where running a separate mains power circuit is expensive or impractical, PoE simplifies the install and removes an additional point of failure.

Who Buys This Model

  • Critical Infrastructure Security Teams: Power stations, water treatment facilities, and utility compounds specifying perimeter cameras that must identify individuals at long range from a fixed mast or rooftop position.
  • Port and Logistics Operators: Waterfront facilities and freight yards needing to cover long wharf approaches or container rows where a single elevated camera with a 32x zoom range replaces multiple fixed focal-length units.
  • Security Integrators on Upgrade Projects: Installers replacing legacy Q1785-LE units who need a direct successor with the same lens range and outdoor housing without redesigning cable runs or mounting brackets.
  • Remote Site Managers: Mining, agricultural, or rural industrial sites with no ambient lighting and limited bandwidth budgets, where 80m IR and Zipstream compression address both challenges from a single device.

Honest Assessment

The Q1805-LE does one thing exceptionally well: it gives a fixed installation point the visual reach of a much longer camera run. The 4.3-137mm motorised lens is the defining specification - operators can shift between wide-area overview and tight-zoom identification without moving the camera or adding hardware. WDR handles the high-contrast lighting conditions common at entry points and perimeter boundaries, and Zipstream meaningfully reduces the storage cost of continuous recording at long focal lengths where frame content changes slowly. The 80m IR makes it a practical choice for unlit outdoor sites. Where it will not serve you well: if you need continuous 360-degree or wide-area coverage across multiple directions, a PTZ with pan-and-tilt or a multi-sensor panoramic camera is a more appropriate tool. This is a purpose-specific long-range unit, not a general-area camera. The Q1805-LE is available through Security Australia for integrators and end users working to this specification.

Before You Buy

PoE Budget: Confirm your switch or injector PoE class before ordering. At maximum zoom the motorised lens and IR draw more power than a standard fixed camera - verify your PoE budget per port supports the Q1805-LE's power draw to avoid the camera throttling IR or lens functions under load.

Zoom and IR Coverage: At 137mm focal length the IR cone narrows significantly to match the tight field of view. If your primary use case is identification at maximum zoom distance, plan your IR coverage area accordingly and assess whether supplementary IR illuminators are required for wider-angle patrol views on the same scene.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You need to cover a long approach road, wharf, or perimeter fence line where the camera mounting point is fixed but operators need remote zoom control to identify people or vehicles at varying distances up to several hundred metres.
  • Good match if: You are replacing an existing Q1785-LE installation and need a like-for-like successor with the same 4.3-137mm zoom range and outdoor-rated bullet housing without modifying your existing cable infrastructure.
  • You may need a different model if: Your site requires continuous pan-and-tilt patrol across multiple directions or 180-360 degree coverage - a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera from the Security Australia range will serve that application better than this fixed-position zoom unit.

Real-World Scenarios

Port Entry Checkpoint

A single Q1805-LE mounted on a wharf entry pylon can open wide to monitor the full vehicle queue, then zoom to 137mm to capture driver detail or container placards at the weighbridge without any operator leaving the control room.

Remote Substation Perimeter

An unmanned electrical substation in a rural area uses the Q1805-LE on a pole at the fence line. The 80m IR covers the approach track in darkness, and Zipstream reduces the bandwidth required over a cellular or point-to-point wireless backhaul link.

Q1785-LE Technology Refresh

An integrator upgrading an ageing Axis Q1785-LE deployment swaps in Q1805-LE units to the same brackets and cable terminations. The matched 4.3-137mm zoom range means camera presets and zone configurations require minimal rework in the existing VMS.

Backlit Gate Entry

An industrial compound gate facing east produces severe morning backlight that blinds standard cameras. WDR on the Q1805-LE maintains visible detail in both the bright sky and the shadowed vehicle cabin in the same recorded frame.

Mining Site Access Road

A remote mine site mounts the Q1805-LE on a communications tower overlooking a 300m access road. Operators zoom in on approaching vehicles well before they reach the gatehouse, giving security staff identification time before physical contact.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: Your installation point is fixed and you need remote-controllable zoom from 4.3mm wide-angle through to 137mm telephoto - a zoom range that no standard fixed-lens bullet camera can provide from one housing.
  • You may need a different model if: Your monitoring task requires continuous automated pan-and-tilt patrol across a wide horizontal arc - a full PTZ camera from the Security Australia range delivers motorised directional movement that this fixed-housing zoom unit cannot replicate.
  • Pairs well with: A video management system (VMS) with preset zone support to take full advantage of the motorised zoom, and a PoE+ managed switch that provides sufficient per-port power budget for this camera's requirements.

Common Questions

  1. Does the Q1805-LE directly replace the Q1785-LE without changing cabling or mounts?

Yes, in most cases. Axis has positioned the Q1805-LE as the designated successor to the Q1785-LE, sharing the same 4.3-137mm zoom lens range and the same outdoor bullet form factor. Existing wall or pole brackets and Cat5e/Cat6 PoE cable runs should remain compatible, though you should verify your specific bracket model against Axis mounting documentation before completing the order.
  2. Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch port?

It depends on the power class your switch supports. The Q1805-LE uses PoE, but with a motorised zoom lens and built-in IR the power draw is higher than a basic fixed-lens camera. Confirm your switch's per-port PoE budget against the camera's published power consumption before deploying - some standard 802.3af ports may be marginal, and a PoE+ capable switch or injector is the safer choice for consistent performance.
  3. What does the 4.3-137mm lens range actually mean for how far away I can identify someone?

At 137mm focal length on a 1080p sensor, the camera can resolve detail at significantly greater distances than a standard 2.8mm or 4mm fixed lens. Practical identification range depends on subject size and lighting conditions, but this lens is used in critical infrastructure and border security contexts precisely because it delivers usable facial and vehicle detail at distances where a standard camera would show only a moving shape.
  4. Does Zipstream affect the quality of recorded footage when something actually happens?

No. Zipstream is designed to reduce bitrate in low-activity areas and periods while preserving full image quality when motion or relevant content is detected. The compression reduction targets background pixels and idle frames - when the system detects activity, it records at full quality. This behaviour is particularly beneficial for long-focal deployments where most of the frame is static background for extended periods.
  5. Does the IR on the Q1805-LE stay effective at maximum zoom?

Partially. The built-in IR illuminator on the Q1805-LE is rated to 80m, but the effective IR cone narrows as focal length increases - this is a physical characteristic of how IR illuminators work with zoom lenses. At the widest angle (4.3mm) you get the full broad IR spread; at 137mm you get a tighter, longer-reaching beam aligned with the field of view. For deployments where you need both maximum zoom and wide-area IR simultaneously from one unit, supplementary external IR illuminators should be assessed as part of your lighting plan. The team at Security Australia can assist with pairing recommendations.
  6. Can the zoom be controlled remotely, or does it require physical access to the camera?

Remote control only - that is the point of a motorised varifocal lens in this form factor. Zoom and focus are adjustable through Axis Camera Management, a compatible VMS, or the camera's own web interface over the network. No physical access to the camera housing is required to change the zoom level, which is a practical necessity when the camera is mounted on a rooftop, communications tower, or restricted-access perimeter structure.
