AXIS Q1615 MK III Bullet Camera, 1080p, H.264, WDR, PoE, 2.8-8.5mm VF Lens
Built as a professional-grade fixed bullet camera for high-demand surveillance applications, the AXIS Q1615 Mk III delivers HDTV 1080p at up to 120 fps with Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR for clear imaging across extreme lighting conditions. An onboard ARTPEC-7 chip with a dedicated deep learning processing unit (DLPU) enables real-time AI analytics including AXIS Object Analytics pre-installed. Note: this is a camera-only unit requiring a separate NVR and PoE power source.
Why This Model
- 120 fps at 1080p: Capturing fast-moving subjects - vehicles, crowds, conveyor lines - at up to 120 frames per second means individual frames remain sharp enough for forensic review, even at speed.
- Onboard DLPU for AI analytics: The dedicated deep learning processor runs AXIS Object Analytics locally on the camera, classifying cars, bikes, buses and people without relying on server-side processing resources.
- IP66, IP67 and IK10 rated: Triple-certified for dust ingress, water jets, immersion, and physical impact, making this suitable for exposed outdoor installations where lesser cameras would fail.

Product Overview
Model: AXIS Q1615 Mk III
Who This Is For
For security integrators and infrastructure managers who need a camera that can handle forensic-grade video, on-board AI classification, and extreme environmental conditions in a single deployable unit. The AXIS Q1615 Mk III is built for sites where image quality under pressure matters - think airport terminals, traffic intersections, rail platforms, and critical infrastructure perimeters where lighting conditions swing wildly and footage must hold up as legal evidence. The 2.8-8.5mm varifocal i-CS lens with a 116 to 40 degree horizontal field of view gives installers genuine flexibility to lock in focal distance during commissioning without image shift. With Lightfinder 2.0 pushing usable colour down to 0.05 lux and Forensic WDR rated to 120 dB, this camera earns its place in high-stakes monitoring environments where no other fixed camera has delivered consistent results.
What This Camera Actually Does
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Colour
At 25/30 fps with Forensic WDR active, the Q1615 Mk III captures usable colour footage at 0.05 lux. That means recognisable detail in near-dark car parks, poorly lit corridors, or overnight outdoor approaches without switching to black and white or adding supplemental lighting.
Forensic WDR at 120 dB
Scenes with simultaneous bright sunlight and deep shadow - entrance lobbies, gate checkpoints, tunnel portals - are handled by Forensic WDR rated up to 120 dB. Detail is preserved across the full brightness range rather than being blown out or crushed at either end.
On-Board DLPU with AXIS Object Analytics
The ARTPEC-7 chip includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit. AXIS Object Analytics comes preinstalled and can classify vehicles (bikes, cars, buses, trucks) and people without sending video to a server. This reduces false alarms from wind-moved foliage, lighting changes, or animals.
Electronic Image Stabilisation
Cameras mounted on poles, gantries, or building facades in exposed locations suffer from vibration blur. The Q1615 Mk III applies electronic image stabilisation to compensate, keeping video sharp and reducing compression artefacts caused by constant micro-movement across the frame.
High Frame Rate at 1080p
When WDR is not required, the camera delivers up to 100/120 fps at full 1080p resolution. This is directly useful for traffic monitoring, fast-moving conveyor lines, or any scenario where motion blur at standard frame rates makes object identification unreliable.
Who Buys This Model
- Traffic and Transport Authorities: The 100/120 fps capability at 1080p and the traffic overview scene profile make this camera a logical fit for intersection monitoring, vehicle lane counting, and incident recording where motion clarity at speed is non-negotiable.
- Airport and Port Security Teams: IP66, IP67, and IK10 ratings combined with Forensic WDR handle the outdoor exposure and variable lighting found at aprons, cargo yards, and landside perimeters without image compromise during shift transitions between day and night.
- Enterprise Security Integrators: The preinstalled DLPU and support for third-party ACAP applications means this camera becomes an edge analytics node, not just a video source. Integrators specifying AXIS-based VMS platforms can deploy analytics without additional server load.
- Critical Infrastructure Operators: Power stations, water treatment facilities, and data centre campuses where cybersecurity is as important as physical security benefit from Axis Edge Vault device identity protection baked into the hardware, not added as a software layer.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS Q1615 Mk III does two things particularly well: it produces forensic-quality video in genuinely difficult lighting conditions, and it runs object classification analytics on-camera without outsourcing processing to a server. The i-CS varifocal lens, Lightfinder 2.0, and Forensic WDR at 120 dB are a practical combination for mixed indoor-outdoor environments. The IK10 rating adds physical durability for exposed or semi-public mounting positions. Where this camera will not serve you: it has no optical zoom or motorised pan-and-tilt movement, so if coverage tracking across a wide area or a long approach is the priority, a PTZ unit is a more appropriate choice. It also does not include built-in IR illumination, so night-time imaging relies entirely on available ambient light and Lightfinder 2.0 - adequate in most urban and industrial installations, but worth confirming for fully unlit rural sites. Available through Security Australia, this camera is positioned at the professional and integrator tier, not entry-level retail.
Before You Buy
Lens and Mounting: The Q1615 Mk III uses a CS-mount i-CS varifocal lens. If you are replacing an older C-mount lens or integrating a third-party optic, confirm CS-mount compatibility before ordering. The i-CS interface enables remote motorised zoom and focus adjustment via the AXIS camera interface, which significantly simplifies final focal length commissioning from ground level - particularly useful on elevated or gantry mounts.
No Built-In IR Illumination: Unlike many fixed outdoor cameras, this model does not have onboard IR LEDs. Night performance is entirely dependent on Lightfinder 2.0 and available ambient light. For genuinely unlit perimeters or rural installations with zero surrounding light, plan for supplemental external IR or white-light illuminators to be paired with this unit.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are deploying at a traffic intersection, airport checkpoint, or industrial entrance where scenes shift from bright daylight to headlight glare to shadow within the same frame - Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB handles that range without two separate camera positions.
- Good match if: Your VMS or analytics platform needs edge-processed object classification without server overhead - the on-board DLPU with preinstalled AXIS Object Analytics classifies people and vehicle types directly on the camera.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires active pan-and-tilt coverage across a large open area or the ability to optically zoom and follow subjects - a PTZ camera from the Security Australia range would be better suited for that use case.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need forensic-grade fixed-point coverage with on-board AI classification, extreme WDR, and hardware cybersecurity on a single camera - particularly for traffic, transport, or critical infrastructure deployments.
- You may need a different model if: Your site requires active area scanning, optical zoom into distant detail, or motorised pan-and-tilt tracking - a PTZ camera is the more appropriate product type for those requirements.
- Pairs well with: An AXIS-compatible NVR or VMS platform with ACAP support, allowing on-camera analytics events to trigger recording rules, alarms, or access control outputs without additional analytics licences.
Common Questions
-
Does the AXIS Q1615 Mk III have built-in IR illumination for complete darkness?
No. This camera has no onboard IR LEDs. Night performance relies on Lightfinder 2.0, which captures usable colour video at 0.05 lux and black and white video at 0.01 lux at 25/30 fps. For sites with some ambient light - streetlighting, signage, or facility perimeter lighting - this is typically adequate. For completely unlit outdoor environments, pair this camera with a dedicated external IR or white-light illuminator. -
Will this camera work with a standard PoE switch?
Yes, provided the switch delivers IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at PoE. A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the Q1615 Mk III, simplifying cable runs in gantry, pole, or building fascia installations. Confirm your switch port budget if running multiple high-performance cameras on the same switch. -
Does the i-CS lens allow remote zoom and focus adjustment after mounting?
Yes. The i-CS (intelligent CS-mount) interface allows motorised remote zoom and focus control directly through the camera's web interface or compatible VMS. This is particularly useful when the camera is mounted at height - an integrator can commission the exact focal length from a laptop at ground level after physical installation is complete, without needing to reaccess the mount. -
How does the DLPU handle object classification, and what types of objects does AXIS Object Analytics detect?
The ARTPEC-7 chip includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit that runs inference workloads separately from the main image processing pipeline. AXIS Object Analytics, which is preinstalled, classifies humans and vehicles - specifically differentiating between bikes, cars, buses, and trucks - directly on the camera. This means classification events are generated at the edge without streaming full video to a server for analysis. The DLPU also supports third-party ACAP applications, so custom models trained for specific scenarios can be deployed on the same hardware. Security Australia stocks this camera as part of its professional AXIS range for integrators building edge-analytics-capable systems. -
Does the frame rate drop when Forensic WDR is enabled?
Yes, there is a direct trade-off. With Forensic WDR active, the maximum frame rate at 1080p is 50/60 fps. Without WDR, the camera runs at up to 100/120 fps at full 1080p resolution. For most surveillance applications, 50/60 fps with WDR is more than adequate. The 100/120 fps mode is suited to scenarios like high-speed vehicle monitoring or fast conveyor lines where motion clarity takes priority over high-contrast scene handling. -
Does this camera support two-way audio?
Yes. The Q1615 Mk III supports two-way full duplex audio. It includes a built-in microphone and a line output, plus external microphone input and line input. Audio encoding options include AAC-LC, G.711, G.726, and Opus. This makes it suitable for installations where operator-to-site communication is required alongside video monitoring, such as gatehouse intercom integration or access control verification workflows. -
What does Axis Edge Vault actually protect, and does it require configuration?
Axis Edge Vault is a hardware-based secure element built into the ARTPEC-7 chip. It stores the camera's cryptographic device identity, protects the signed firmware chain, and secures sensitive credentials - preventing firmware tampering or identity spoofing at the network level. For most deployments, Edge Vault operates without manual configuration, but integrators working in high-security environments can use it alongside IEEE 802.1X network access control and HTTPS/TLS-enforced streams to meet strict endpoint security requirements.
