Product Overview

Model: Q1615-LE

Who This Is For

For integrators and security managers who need a high-performance bullet camera capable of carrying onboard AI analytics without relying on a server to do the heavy lifting. The AXIS Q1615-LE Mk III is built around the ARTPEC-7 chipset with a dedicated deep learning processing unit, making it a strong fit for sites where vehicle and object classification needs to happen at the edge - loading docks, industrial yards, commercial car parks, and critical infrastructure perimeters. The varifocal 2.8-8.5mm lens lets you dial in the field of view during commissioning rather than committing to a fixed angle, and the IP67 and IK10 ratings mean it can handle both harsh weather and deliberate interference. Lightfinder technology brings the minimum illumination down to 0.05 lux in colour, which matters on sites where lighting is inconsistent or minimal.

What This Camera Actually Does

Edge AI Object Classification

The ARTPEC-7 chip includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit that runs AXIS Object Analytics directly on the camera. It classifies vehicles by type - cars, buses, trucks - and distinguishes humans from other motion sources, reducing nuisance alerts without needing a separate analytics server.

Lightfinder Low-Light Performance

With a minimum illumination of 0.05 lux in colour and 0.01 lux in black-and-white at 25/30fps with Forensic WDR active, this camera retains usable colour detail in conditions where most 1080p bullet cameras have already switched to monochrome or degraded significantly.

High Frame Rate Mode

The camera supports up to 100fps at 1080p resolution (without WDR active). For sites monitoring fast-moving vehicles or needing smooth motion capture for evidentiary purposes, that frame rate reduces motion blur and gives investigators more usable frames per event.

Forensic WDR

Axis Forensic WDR processes wide dynamic range scenes to retain detail in both bright and dark areas simultaneously. At entrances or gates where headlights and shadows create difficult contrast, this keeps the scene legible without washing out key detail in either zone.

Zipstream Bandwidth Compression

Axis Zipstream works inside H.264 and H.265 streams to reduce bitrate in static or low-activity sections of the image while preserving full detail around forensically relevant objects. In practice this cuts storage and bandwidth demands significantly compared to standard H.265 alone.

Varifocal CS-Mount Lens

The 2.8-8.5mm F1.2 varifocal lens covers a horizontal field of view from 102 degrees down to 40 degrees. Installers can adjust focal length on site to match the specific coverage distance, whether covering a wide gate entrance or a narrower approach lane further out.

Who Buys This Model

  • Industrial site security teams: Facilities with vehicle movements across large yards or loading areas where edge AI classification of trucks, cars, and people reduces false alarm call-outs without a dedicated analytics server.
  • Critical infrastructure operators: Power, water, and utilities sites that require IK10 vandal resistance and IP67 weatherproofing alongside deep learning analytics for perimeter monitoring in exposed outdoor locations.
  • Commercial car park operators: Installations where the varifocal lens allows the integrator to frame lanes and bays precisely and Forensic WDR handles the contrast problems caused by headlights at night or direct sunlight during the day.
  • Axis VAPIX ecosystem integrators: Professionals building large Axis VMS deployments who need a bullet camera that slots into existing VAPIX and third-party integrations without additional middleware for object analytics.
  • High-security commercial perimeters: Retail distribution centres, data centres, or gated compounds where the 100fps high frame rate mode produces smooth, motion-blur-free footage of fast-moving vehicles for evidentiary review.

Honest Assessment

The Q1615-LE Mk III does several things well that matter on serious commercial and industrial deployments. The ARTPEC-7 chip with its dedicated deep learning unit means object classification runs on the camera itself, which reduces VMS server load and keeps analytics functional even during network interruptions. Forensic WDR and Lightfinder together make it genuinely capable in difficult mixed-lighting environments. The varifocal lens at F1.2 gives installers real flexibility without sacrificing light-gathering ability. Zipstream keeps storage requirements manageable across multi-camera deployments. Where this camera is not the right fit: if you need wide-area coverage from a single unit, a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera covers more ground. If you need active deterrence with strobe lighting or audio warnings built in, a TiOC-style camera serves that purpose better. Available through Security Australia, this is a professional-grade bullet camera aimed at integrators and enterprise buyers rather than straightforward residential or small retail installs.

Before You Buy

Lens Adjustment: The 2.8-8.5mm varifocal lens is manually adjusted - confirm your required coverage distance and object size at that distance before mounting, as the CS-mount lens will need physical adjustment and refocusing on site. At 8.5mm the 40-degree horizontal field of view is well suited to longer approaches; at 2.8mm the 102-degree view is more appropriate for shorter, wider zones. Factor focus adjustment time into your commissioning schedule.

High Frame Rate Mode Limitation: The 100/120fps mode operates without WDR active. If your installation environment has strong contrast between light and dark areas - such as a gate with direct sunlight on one side - you will need to choose between high frame rate and Forensic WDR. For most perimeter and approach monitoring at 25/30fps with WDR active, the performance tradeoff is straightforward, but confirm your priority before configuring the stream.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are installing on an industrial or commercial site where onboard AI classification of vehicles and people is required and you want analytics running at the edge without a dedicated server - the ARTPEC-7 DLPU handles this natively.
  • Good match if: Your site has variable or low-level ambient lighting and you need colour detail retained well below 0.1 lux - Lightfinder with the F1.2 varifocal lens delivers colour imagery at 0.05 lux with Forensic WDR active at 25/30fps.
  • You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is wide-area scene coverage from a single camera position - a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera from the Security Australia range will cover more ground per unit and provide operator-controlled or auto-tracking pan and tilt capability.

Real-World Scenarios

Industrial Yard Vehicle Monitoring

Mounted on a pole covering a logistics yard entry, AXIS Object Analytics classifies trucks, vans, and cars as they move through. Alerts are triggered by vehicle type rather than any motion, eliminating overnight false alarms from wind-blown debris or wildlife.

Poorly Lit Perimeter Fence Line

A water treatment facility with minimal external lighting installs the Q1615-LE Mk III along the fence line. Lightfinder at 0.05 lux colour keeps the image in colour through most of the night, with the auto IR-cut filter switching to monochrome only in truly dark conditions.

Car Park Entry with Headlight Glare

Covering a boom gate with vehicles approaching at night, Forensic WDR balances the bright headlights against the shadowed driver and number plate areas. The varifocal lens is set to narrow the field of view and increase detail at the point of interest.

Multi-Camera Axis VMS Deployment

An integrator building a 40-camera Axis deployment uses the Q1615-LE Mk III for all outdoor approaches. Zipstream across the fleet reduces the NVR storage footprint substantially. VAPIX integration means all cameras are managed natively in the VMS without additional configuration layers.

Fast Vehicle Approach Lane

On a site where vehicles pass at speed through an access lane, the camera is configured at 100fps. This produces smooth, motion-blur-free footage that gives investigators clear frames for review, rather than smeared images from a standard 25fps stream.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need onboard deep learning analytics, high frame rate capability, and forensic-grade low-light performance in a ruggedised outdoor bullet form with varifocal flexibility - the ARTPEC-7 DLPU and Lightfinder combination is the core differentiator here.
  • You may need a different model if: Your priority is wide-area or 180/360-degree coverage from a single mount point - a multi-sensor panoramic or fisheye camera type will cover significantly more ground per camera position and reduce the number of units required on large open sites.
  • Pairs well with: An Axis-compatible NVR or VMS platform that supports VAPIX and can manage Zipstream bitrate control natively, along with edge storage for local redundancy on remote or bandwidth-constrained sites.

Common Questions

  1. Does this camera classify vehicle types without a separate analytics server?

Yes. The ARTPEC-7 chip includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit that runs AXIS Object Analytics directly on the camera. It distinguishes between vehicle types including cars, buses, and trucks, as well as people and other objects. No external analytics server or additional software licence is required for this base classification capability.
  2. Will this camera maintain colour video in very low light without switching to black-and-white?

Yes, down to 0.05 lux in colour at 25/30fps with Forensic WDR and Lightfinder active. Below that threshold, the automatically removable infrared-cut filter switches the sensor to monochrome mode for maximum sensitivity. In practice, most outdoor environments with any ambient street or security lighting will remain in colour through the night.
  3. Can I run this camera at 100fps and have WDR active at the same time?

No. The 100/120fps mode operates without Forensic WDR active. When WDR is enabled, the maximum frame rate is 50/60fps. At 25/30fps with WDR on, the camera achieves its best low-light figures. You need to decide during configuration which is the priority for your specific scene - high frame rate for fast-moving subjects, or WDR for high-contrast lighting environments.
  4. Is the lens adjustable on site or is the focal length fixed?

The lens is manually adjustable on site. The 2.8-8.5mm varifocal range gives a horizontal field of view from 102 degrees at the wide end down to 40 degrees at the telephoto end. Physical adjustment and refocusing is done during installation. Plan time for this during commissioning, particularly on pole or elevated mounts where repositioning to readjust is inconvenient.
  5. How does Zipstream affect storage compared to standard H.265?

Zipstream works on top of H.264 or H.265 by dynamically reducing bitrate in areas of the frame with no forensically relevant activity - such as sky, static background, or empty ground - while preserving full detail around detected objects. In deployments with significant static background in the frame, Zipstream delivers meaningful additional storage savings on top of what H.265 alone achieves. The exact saving depends on scene complexity and activity level.
  6. Is this camera suitable for installation in harsh outdoor Australian conditions?

Yes. IP67 certification confirms full dust ingress protection and protection against water immersion, handling exposure to heavy rain and hosing. IK10 is the highest impact rating in the IEC standard, confirming the housing withstands significant deliberate mechanical impact. The stocked by Security Australia version is the same internationally rated hardware, suitable for coastal, tropical, and industrial outdoor environments.
  7. What third-party applications can run on the ARTPEC-7 chip?

The ARTPEC-7 supports Axis Camera Application Platform (ACAP), which allows certified third-party deep learning applications to run directly on the camera. Beyond the preinstalled AXIS Object Analytics, integrators can deploy compatible ACAP applications for specialised detection tasks. The VAPIX API also enables integration with a wide range of third-party VMS platforms without proprietary lock-in.
