Product Overview
Model: AXIS P3748-PLVE
Who This Is For
When eliminating blind spots across wide-open outdoor spaces is the core brief, the AXIS P3748-PLVE is the type of camera that replaces four separate installs with a single mounting point. Designed for security integrators and facilities managers working on large commercial sites - carparks, transport hubs, university campuses, logistics yards, and industrial perimeters - this 4-sensor panoramic camera delivers a continuous 360-degree view at 4K resolution from each of its 4 sensors simultaneously. The built-in IR illumination extends usable night-time coverage without relying on site lighting, while the onboard deep learning processing unit supports AXIS Object Analytics for edge-based human and vehicle classification. The result is a camera that supports serious coverage planning: fewer mounting positions, less cabling, and analytics that run at the edge without depending on server-side processing. It suits both new installations and retrofits where pole or parapet mounts are already in place.
What This Camera Actually Does
4-Sensor 360-Degree Coverage
4 independent sensors provide a seamless 360-degree horizontal panoramic view in a single camera unit. Each sensor captures at 4K resolution, so the combined image retains usable detail across the full scene - no stitching gaps, no blind corners in the coverage arc.
Built-In IR Illumination
OptimizedIR automatically adjusts IR intensity to match the scene, reducing overexposure on nearby subjects while maintaining useful illumination across the full coverage arc. This removes dependency on site lighting for after-hours monitoring in carparks, yards, and perimeters.
Onboard Deep Learning Analytics
A dedicated deep learning processing unit runs AXIS Object Analytics directly on the camera. Human and vehicle classification, line crossing, and area intrusion detection all process at the edge - reducing false alerts from trees, shadows, and animals without needing a server-side analytics engine.
Outdoor-Rated Housing
IP66, IP66K, and NEMA 4X ratings confirm dust-tight and weather-resistant performance in sustained rain and hose-down environments. IK10 impact resistance makes it appropriate for exposed pole mounts and elevated parapet installations where vandalism risk is a design consideration.
Wide Operating Temperature Range
Rated to operate from -40°C to 50°C, this camera functions through Australian summer heat and cold-climate overnight lows without heater kits or additional environmental enclosures - relevant for remote infrastructure, alpine sites, and northern industrial sites.
H.265 Compression
H.265 (High Efficiency Video Coding) reduces bandwidth and storage requirements compared to H.264 at equivalent quality. For a 4-sensor 4K camera running continuously, efficient compression is a practical necessity - it directly affects NVR storage capacity and network switch loading.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Commercial Campuses: Deploying panoramic cameras to reduce pole count and cabling across large open sites - universities, hospitals, and government facilities where single mounting positions need to cover full 360-degree arcs.
- Transport and Logistics Operators: Monitoring loading docks, truck marshalling yards, and entry/exit zones where vehicle and pedestrian classification via AXIS Object Analytics directly supports incident reporting and access audit requirements.
- Industrial Site Security Managers: Specifying cameras for outdoor perimeter coverage at mining, utilities, and manufacturing facilities where the -40°C to 50°C operating range and NEMA 4X housing meet site environment standards.
- Facilities Managers Retrofitting Existing Mounts: Replacing multiple single-sensor cameras on existing parapet or pole mounts with a single unit that delivers equivalent or greater coverage, reducing ongoing maintenance points.
- Councils and Public Space Operators: Covering town squares, open plazas, and transit nodes where 360-degree coverage with edge analytics reduces operator monitoring burden and supports evidence-grade footage retrieval.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P3748-PLVE does two things genuinely well: it delivers complete 360-degree 4K panoramic coverage from a single outdoor-rated housing with IR, and it runs meaningful deep learning analytics at the edge without requiring a separate analytics server. For any installation where cable routing to 3 or 4 separate camera positions is expensive or structurally impractical, the value case for this unit is straightforward. The IK10 and IP66K ratings back up the outdoor positioning claim rather than simply implying it. Where this camera is not the right fit: it will not provide optical zoom into a specific zone the way a PTZ does, and the IR range - while functional for a panoramic - will not match a dedicated long-range IR bullet on a 50-plus metre approach. If the brief includes close-in identification at distance rather than wide-area situational awareness, a different product type serves better. Available through Security Australia, it is positioned as an enterprise-grade solution and is priced accordingly.
Before You Buy
Power Requirement: The P3748-PLVE requires PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt Type 3) to power all 4 sensors simultaneously. Standard PoE (802.3af) and PoE+ (802.3at) switches will not supply sufficient power. Confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3bt before specifying cabling runs - this is the most common install mismatch with multi-sensor panoramic cameras. A dedicated PoE++ injector is a practical alternative if upgrading the switch is not feasible.
Storage Planning: Running 4 simultaneous 4K streams - even with H.265 compression - generates substantial data. Calculate storage requirements based on your target retention period before selecting NVR storage capacity. Enabling AXIS Object Analytics event-based recording (record on classified motion rather than continuous) is the most effective way to manage storage load without reducing coverage hours.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need 360-degree outdoor panoramic coverage from a single pole or parapet mount and your switch infrastructure supports PoE++ (802.3bt) - or you are willing to use a PoE++ injector.
- Good match if: Your site requires edge-based human and vehicle classification without a dedicated analytics server - the onboard DLPU handles AXIS Object Analytics locally, keeping that processing off your NVR.
- You may need a different model if: Your primary requirement is optical zoom into a specific distant zone or active PTZ tracking of moving subjects - a dedicated PTZ camera type will serve that use case better.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your brief requires full 360-degree outdoor panoramic coverage from a single mounting point, with built-in IR and onboard deep learning analytics, and your power infrastructure supports PoE++ (802.3bt).
- You may need a different model if: Active PTZ tracking, optical zoom into a specific distant zone, or long-range IR identification beyond the panoramic IR range is required - a dedicated PTZ camera type is built for that use case.
- Pairs well with: A PoE++ managed switch or midspan injector, a compatible ONVIF NVR with multi-stream display capability, and an AXIS S-series or compatible recording solution that handles H.265 from high-channel panoramic sources.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch?
No. The P3748-PLVE requires PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt Type 3) - standard PoE (802.3af, 15.4W) and PoE+ (802.3at, 30W) do not supply enough power to run all 4 sensors simultaneously. Confirm your network switch or injector specifies 802.3bt Type 3 (up to 60W) before purchasing. A dedicated PoE++ midspan injector is a cost-effective alternative if a full switch upgrade is not planned. -
Does this camera support AXIS Object Analytics out of the box?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics is included and runs on the onboard DLPU without additional licensing for the base human and vehicle classification scenarios. The deep learning processing unit handles classification at the edge, so detection events - line crossing, area intrusion, and object classification - are generated by the camera itself and pushed to your NVR or VMS rather than processed server-side. -
How does the 360-degree panoramic image work - is it a single fisheye lens or 4 separate sensors?
It is 4 independent sensors, not a fisheye lens. Each of the 4 sensors captures its own 4K image covering a segment of the full 360-degree arc. The camera combines these into a continuous panoramic view. This approach avoids the barrel distortion and centre-point resolution loss that is inherent in single-lens fisheye cameras, and each sensor retains full 4K detail in its segment rather than sharing resolution across the entire panoramic field. -
What are the DORI distances for this panoramic camera?
DORI performance (Detection, Observation, Recognition, Identification) varies by segment angle and lens configuration in multi-sensor panoramic cameras. For the P3748-PLVE, Detection and Observation distances - where humans and vehicles can be reliably detected and classified - are the primary operational use cases supported by the onboard DLPU and AXIS Object Analytics. Recognition and Identification distances (sufficient for facial or plate detail) are shorter than what a dedicated narrow-angle 4K camera would achieve over the same ground distance. This camera is optimised for wide-area situational awareness and detection-level analytics, not forensic close-up identification at range. Consult the AXIS DORI calculator with the specific lens configuration for site-specific planning. Part of the Security Australia range, this unit is suited to coverage-first deployments where DORI detection and observation thresholds are the design target. -
Is this camera compatible with third-party VMS platforms?
Yes. The P3748-PLVE is ONVIF Profile S, Profile G, and Profile T compliant, which provides broad compatibility with third-party video management systems that support ONVIF. Native AXIS Camera Station integration is also supported. Confirm multi-stream panoramic display capability with your specific VMS before finalising the system design, as handling 4 simultaneous 4K streams from a single camera device varies in implementation across different VMS platforms. -
Will this camera record to a local SD card if the network goes down?
Yes. The P3748-PLVE includes an SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot. When configured, the camera can record locally to the SD card - this is used for edge storage and as a failover recording path if network connectivity to the NVR is interrupted. SD card capacity and recording duration depend on stream settings, compression, and frame rate configuration. -
Does the deep learning analytics on this camera reduce false alarms compared to standard motion detection?
Yes, meaningfully so. Standard pixel-based motion detection triggers on any scene change - moving foliage, passing headlights, insects near the lens. The onboard DLPU in the P3748-PLVE classifies objects as humans or vehicles before generating an alert. This significantly reduces nuisance alerts in outdoor environments, particularly relevant for wide-area panoramic installs where a large field of view would otherwise generate continuous false motion events overnight. The practical result is that alerts reaching your monitoring station or NVR represent confirmed human or vehicle activity rather than environmental noise.
