Product Overview
Model: AXIS P3268-SLVE
Who This Is For
Property managers specifying cameras for marine, food processing, or harsh-wash-down environments will find the AXIS P3268-SLVE built specifically for conditions that destroy standard surveillance hardware. The electropolished SS 316L stainless steel housing resists seawater corrosion and aggressive cleaning chemicals, while DNV certification and NSF/ANSI Standard 169 compliance open doors to vessel decks, fish processing lines, and abattoirs where hygiene regulations govern equipment selection. At 8MP with a 3-8mm motorised varifocal lens, this camera delivers forensic-grade detail across a wide field of view - useful when you cannot revisit footage to clarify an incident and need the image to hold up under scrutiny. The IK11 impact rating exceeds the more common IK10 standard, and IP66/67/68 plus NEMA 4X ratings handle pressure washing and temporary submersion. This is a camera specified when environmental conditions are the primary constraint, not just an afterthought.
What This Camera Actually Does
Marine-Grade SS 316L Housing
The electropolished stainless steel enclosure is DNV-certified and resists chloride corrosion from seawater and the caustic cleaning agents used in marine and food production environments. Standard aluminium dome cameras corrode and seize in these conditions within months.
8MP Forensic Detail at 30fps
4K resolution at 3840x2160 means you can digitally zoom into specific zones of a wide frame during post-incident review without losing subject detail. The 3-8mm varifocal lens adjusts field of view during commissioning to match the exact coverage shape of each mounting location.
Forensic WDR and Lightfinder 2.0
Forensic WDR handles up to 120 dB of dynamic range, keeping both shadowed holds and sun-lit decks readable in the same frame. Lightfinder 2.0 retains colour in near-darkness rather than switching prematurely to monochrome, which matters for identifying clothing colours at dusk.
OptimizedIR to 40m
Built-in IR illumination reaches 40 metres in complete darkness. OptimizedIR adjusts IR intensity to the zoom level of the varifocal lens, preventing overexposed foregrounds when the lens is set to a wider angle - a common failure point with fixed-IR dome cameras.
ARTPEC-8 with Deep Learning Processing
The onboard DLPU runs edge analytics without offloading processing to a server. ACAP version 4 support means third-party deep learning applications can be installed directly on the camera, allowing the platform to grow with your analytic requirements over time.
IK11, IP66/67/68, NEMA 4X
IK11 exceeds the standard IK10 impact resistance threshold, relevant on vessel decks and processing floors where equipment takes knocks from tools and machinery. IP68 covers temporary submersion and IP67 covers wash-down jets directed at any angle - NEMA 4X adds US market compliance for the same conditions.
Who Buys This Model
- Commercial Vessel Operators: DNV certification and SS 316L housing make this the camera of choice for passenger ferries, offshore supply vessels, and fishing vessels where salt air and sea spray are constant and standard cameras fail within a season.
- Food and Beverage Processing Facilities: NSF/ANSI 169 certification allows installation in food contact zones where regular high-pressure chemical wash-downs are required, and where regulatory compliance governs what equipment can be present.
- Port and Wharf Security Teams: The 8MP sensor and 3-8mm varifocal lens let operators dial in coverage across loading aprons and container marshalling areas, with 40m IR handling areas with no permanent lighting infrastructure.
- Cold-Chain and Freezer Facility Managers: Rated to -40°C, this camera operates inside blast freezers and cold storage environments where moisture and extreme temperature change eliminate most camera options.
- Security Integrators Specifying for Regulated Industries: The combination of ARTPEC-8, ACAP 4 support, and Axis Edge Vault provides a future-ready hardware platform for clients requiring edge analytics and hardware-based cybersecurity compliance.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P3268-SLVE does something very few cameras do: it holds up physically in environments that actively destroy surveillance equipment. The SS 316L enclosure, DNV certification, and NSF/ANSI 169 compliance are genuine differentiators - not marketing descriptions of weatherproofing that most outdoor cameras carry. Image quality is strong: Forensic WDR at 120 dB and 8MP at 30fps give investigators material they can actually use, and the ARTPEC-8 chip means this camera is not going to become analytically obsolete quickly. The 40m IR range and varifocal lens add practical installation flexibility in locations where you cannot always mount a camera at an ideal distance.
This camera is not the right choice for standard indoor or general outdoor installs - the SS 316L housing commands a price premium that only makes sense when the environment actually demands it. If your application is a standard external wall, eave, or carpark mounting, a conventional IP66-rated dome or turret camera available through Security Australia will do the same imaging job at a lower cost. This camera earns its specification in corrosive, chemically hostile, or regulated-hygiene environments.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P3268-SLVE draws up to 12.5W with IR and onboard analytics running, which exceeds the 15.4W IEEE 802.3af budget at full load on some switches. Confirm your PoE switch or injector supports IEEE 802.3at (PoE+, up to 30W) before cabling - this is especially relevant in marine installations where adding a second cable run later is costly. The varifocal 3-8mm lens is adjusted during commissioning; allow access to the camera dome for initial focus confirmation before final sealing in a marine enclosure.
Mounting Note: The stainless steel housing is heavier than a standard plastic dome and requires a rated marine-grade mounting surface and fixings. On vessel installations, verify the mounting bracket and fasteners are also corrosion-rated to match the SS 316L body - a stainless camera on a zinc-coated mild steel bracket will still corrode at the bracket interface through galvanic action.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: Your site requires cameras rated for regular high-pressure chemical wash-down and your application falls under NSF/ANSI 169 or DNV compliance requirements - this camera is certified for both.
- Good match if: You need 8MP forensic-grade footage in a location that operates between -40°C and 50°C, such as a blast freezer entry, cold storage loading dock, or vessel machinery space.
- You may need a different model if: Your installation is a standard outdoor carpark, building facade, or retail environment - a conventional full-colour turret or dome camera will provide equivalent image quality at significantly lower cost and without the marine-specific hardware overhead.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: Your site demands DNV certification, NSF/ANSI 169 food-grade compliance, or IP67/68 wash-down resistance in a dome form factor - no standard IP66 dome camera meets these thresholds.
- You may need a different model if: Your application is general outdoor surveillance on a building facade or carpark - a standard outdoor dome or turret camera will deliver equivalent 4K imaging at substantially lower cost and with simpler mounting options.
- Pairs well with: A PoE+ managed network switch with adequate per-port power budgets, and an ONVIF-compatible NVR or VMS platform that supports ACAP analytics passthrough for edge event data.
Common Questions
-
Will this camera survive a daily high-pressure chemical wash-down in a food processing facility?
Yes. The P3268-SLVE carries NSF/ANSI Standard 169 certification specifically for food processing environments, and IP67 sealing protects against pressurised water jets directed from any angle. The electropolished SS 316L housing also resists sodium hypochlorite, quaternary ammonium, and other common food-grade sanitisers that cause standard plastic or powder-coated aluminium domes to degrade over time. -
What does DNV certification actually mean for this camera?
DNV (Det Norske Veritas) certification means the camera has been independently tested and approved for use in marine environments. For vessel operators and offshore facility managers, it means the camera can be included in formal vessel surveys and classification audits without requiring a special exemption. It validates that the design meets established standards for vibration, humidity, temperature cycling, and salt atmosphere exposure on maritime installations. -
Does the varifocal 3-8mm lens adjust remotely or does it require physical access during installation?
Physical access to the camera is required for initial lens adjustment on the P3268-SLVE - the 3-8mm zoom is motorised and can be adjusted remotely via the camera's web interface after commissioning, but focus confirmation at the point of installation is recommended before final sealing. For marine installations where scaffold or elevated access may not be available after the camera is secured, plan the initial focus and zoom setting carefully during commissioning before the dome is fully secured to its mounting surface. -
What is the difference between Forensic WDR and standard WDR, and why does it matter here?
Forensic WDR processes multiple exposures in a way that retains detail in both the brightest and darkest parts of the frame simultaneously, up to 120 dB on the P3268-SLVE. Standard WDR in lower-grade cameras typically manages 60-90 dB and applies more aggressive tone-mapping that can smear moving subjects during frame blending. In marine environments where a subject might move from a bright deck into a dark hold entrance in a single frame, Forensic WDR keeps both zones usable rather than blowing out the bright area or crushing the shadow. -
What does ACAP version 4 support mean in practice for this camera?
ACAP (Axis Camera Application Platform) version 4 allows third-party analytics applications to be installed and run directly on the camera's ARTPEC-8 chip and DLPU - no separate server required. In practice this means applications like intrusion detection, crowd density analysis, or object classification can be added to the camera after installation as your operational needs evolve. The DLPU provides the processing headroom to run these applications without degrading streaming performance, which is not the case on older ARTPEC-7 or lower-generation cameras. -
Does this camera operate at full specification in -40°C environments?
Yes. The P3268-SLVE is rated for operation between -40°C and 50°C. This covers blast freezer interiors, cold room entries, and outdoor installations in sub-zero climates. At extreme cold, condensation management during camera warm-up is worth considering - if the camera is powered down and then powered on in a cold environment, allow time for the unit to stabilise before treating any initial image softness as a fault. Once at operating temperature the camera performs normally across the full specification range. The P3268-SLVE is stocked by Security Australia for applications where this temperature range is a firm requirement. -
Will a standard 802.3af PoE port power this camera at full load?
Not reliably at full operating load. IEEE 802.3af delivers up to 15.4W at the switch port (12.95W guaranteed at the device). With IR active and DLPU analytics running, the P3268-SLVE's power draw can approach or exceed the 802.3af budget. IEEE 802.3at PoE+ - which delivers up to 30W at the port - is the recommended standard to ensure the camera operates without power-throttling in any condition. Check your switch's per-port PoE budget, not just the total switch PoE capacity, before finalising your network infrastructure design.
