Product Overview
Model: AXIS P3268-LVE
Who This Is For
For security integrators and facilities managers who need forensic-grade outdoor surveillance with onboard intelligence and minimal post-install adjustment, the AXIS P3268-LVE is a purpose-built 4K varifocal dome designed to handle real-world conditions. It suits large commercial car parks, campus perimeters, transport hubs, and critical infrastructure sites where image detail at distance matters and where false alerts from standard motion detection create operational noise. The 4.3-8.6mm motorised varifocal lens lets installers dial in the scene remotely without touching the camera head again, and the onboard DLPU runs AXIS Object Analytics locally - classifying humans, vehicles, and vehicle types without needing a server to do the processing. If your client needs evidence-quality footage, deep-learning edge analytics, and a camera housing rated to take a hit, this is the model to specify.
What This Camera Actually Does
4K Resolution at 30fps
The sensor captures at 3840x2160 continuously at 30 frames per second. That pixel density means you can crop into a recorded frame and still read a numberplate or identify a face - without needing a separate dedicated camera for that zone.
Remote Motorised Zoom and Autofocus
The 4.3-8.6mm varifocal lens adjusts remotely via the camera's web interface or management software. Installers set the field of view and trigger autofocus without climbing back up - genuinely useful on rooftops, elevated brackets, or restricted-access areas.
Edge Analytics with DLPU
The ARTPEC-8 chip includes a dedicated deep learning processing unit. AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the camera, classifying humans, vehicles, and vehicle types in real time - reducing server load and allowing alert rules to be configured without cloud dependency.
Lightfinder 2.0 and OptimizedIR
Lightfinder 2.0 maintains colour video in near-dark conditions, while OptimizedIR extends IR illumination to 40 metres and adjusts beam spread automatically as the varifocal lens zooms in or out - avoiding the washed-out centre that fixed IR creates at close range.
Forensic WDR at 120dB
Forensic WDR handles up to 120dB of dynamic range, maintaining usable detail in scenes with direct sun, bright headlights, or shadowed entries all in the same frame. Useful for gate entries, loading docks, and car parks where light conditions change constantly.
Zipstream Bandwidth Reduction
Axis Zipstream works with H.264 and H.265 to reduce bitrate on static scenes while preserving full detail on motion. At 4K, this makes a material difference to storage sizing - a key consideration when specifying NVR capacity or cloud storage allocation for a multi-camera system.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Government and Critical Infrastructure Projects: Axis Edge Vault, signed firmware, and secure boot satisfy cybersecurity procurement requirements that lower-tier cameras cannot meet.
- Facilities Managers at Large Commercial Sites: Onboard AXIS Object Analytics filters human and vehicle events without a dedicated analytics server - reducing both false alarms and ongoing software licensing costs.
- Transport and Logistics Operators: The 4K sensor and 40m IR range cover loading docks and yard approaches where identifying vehicle type and driver detail from a single camera position matters.
- Installers Specifying Hard-to-Access Mounting Positions: Remote motorised zoom and autofocus via the web interface means the lens can be dialled in from the ground after the camera is physically mounted - no return visit required.
- Enterprise IT and Physical Security Teams: ACAP v4 support allows custom deep-learning applications to be deployed directly on the camera, extending the platform without replacing hardware as requirements change.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P3268-LVE does several things genuinely well. The combination of 4K at 30fps, Forensic WDR at 120dB, and Lightfinder 2.0 gives it real performance in mixed and low-light outdoor environments - not just on spec sheets. The onboard DLPU running AXIS Object Analytics is a legitimate operational feature, not a marketing label: it classifies human and vehicle events on the camera itself, which reduces server dependency and keeps latency low on alert-triggered workflows. The IK10 and IP66 housing is confirmed and appropriate for exposed outdoor installation. Where this camera is not the right tool: it does not have a built-in speaker or microphone, so two-way audio requires external hardware connected to the audio I/O port. It is also not a PTZ - the varifocal adjusts during installation but does not pan or tilt under operator control. If your application needs live operator-driven camera movement, a PTZ model from the Security Australia range is the better specification.
Before You Buy
PoE Budget: The P3268-LVE requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ (up to 12.95W typical). Confirm your switch or injector supports 802.3at before installation - a standard 802.3af port will not supply sufficient power to run the camera at full capability. If your existing infrastructure is 802.3af only, factor in a PoE+ injector or switch upgrade into the bill of materials.
Lens Setup Sequence: When commissioning the motorised varifocal, set zoom position first via the web interface, then trigger autofocus. Reversing this order - focusing before finalising zoom - will require a second autofocus pass. Allow time during commissioning to preview the field of view live before locking in focus, particularly on elevated mounts where re-access is difficult.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You need forensic-detail outdoor coverage on a commercial or industrial site where the camera will be fixed on a defined zone - the 4K sensor, varifocal lens, and onboard AXIS Object Analytics deliver verified human and vehicle classification without additional server hardware.
- Good match if: Your project has cybersecurity compliance requirements - Axis Edge Vault, signed firmware, and secure boot are built-in features that satisfy procurement standards for government, critical infrastructure, and enterprise environments.
- You may need a different model if: Your monitoring requirement involves live operator-controlled camera movement across a wide area - a PTZ camera with optical zoom, continuous pan/tilt, and auto-tracking will serve that scenario more effectively than a fixed-position varifocal dome.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need outdoor 4K coverage from a fixed position with onboard deep-learning analytics, a vandal-resistant IK10 housing, and enterprise-grade cybersecurity features all in one unit - without relying on a separate analytics server.
- You may need a different model if: Your application requires live operator-controlled pan, tilt, and optical zoom to track moving subjects across a wide area - that use case is served by a dedicated PTZ camera, not a fixed varifocal dome.
- Pairs well with: A PoE+ managed switch with VLAN support for network segmentation, a compatible AXIS Camera Station or third-party VMS, and an Axis network speaker connected via the audio I/O port if on-camera audio output is required.
Common Questions
-
Does the P3268-LVE support true two-way audio out of the box?
No - not without an external speaker. The camera has an external microphone input and line input, and supports network speaker pairing via Axis edge-to-edge audio technology, but there is no built-in speaker in this housing. To enable two-way audio, you connect an Axis network speaker to the same network and pair it through the camera's web interface. The audio encoding side is comprehensive - AAC-LC, G.711, Opus, and 24-bit LPCM are all supported. -
Will this camera work on a standard PoE switch?
No. The P3268-LVE requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ to operate correctly. Standard 802.3af ports deliver a maximum of 15.4W, which is insufficient for this camera's full operating power. Check your switch specifications before installation - if your existing infrastructure is 802.3af only, a PoE+ injector or switch upgrade is required. This is a common oversight on retrofit projects where older switches are reused. -
How does the motorised varifocal lens work in practice - can operators adjust zoom during normal operation?
No. The 4.3-8.6mm motorised varifocal is a commissioning tool, not an operational one. It allows installers to set and lock the field of view remotely via the camera's web interface or AXIS Camera Station without physically handling the camera once mounted. Once the zoom and autofocus are set, the camera operates as a fixed-view camera at that focal length. If you need a lens that operators can adjust live to follow subjects or switch between wide and zoomed views, a PTZ with optical zoom is the appropriate camera type. The digital PTZ feature allows some digital zoom within the captured 4K frame, but this does not change the physical lens position. -
What exactly does AXIS Object Analytics classify, and does it require a separate licence?
AXIS Object Analytics classifies humans, vehicles, and vehicle types (such as distinguishing cars from trucks) and runs entirely on the camera's onboard DLPU - no external server or additional licence is required for the base application. It is pre-installed on ARTPEC-8 based cameras. Rules and zones are configured via the camera's web interface or a compatible VMS. If you need more specialised analytics beyond object detection - such as crowd density estimation or custom application development - those would use the ACAP v4 framework, which may involve third-party application licensing. -
Does the Zipstream compression make a meaningful difference at 4K?
Yes - at 4K resolution, the difference is significant. Without Zipstream, a continuous 4K H.265 stream at 30fps can produce substantial bitrates that challenge storage budgets. Zipstream dynamically lowers bitrate during low-activity periods while maintaining full detail whenever motion or defined analytics events are detected. In practice, this can reduce average bitrate and storage consumption considerably on scenes that are idle for portions of the day - such as car parks overnight. Available through Security Australia, this camera's Zipstream implementation covers both H.264 and H.265 streams simultaneously. -
Can the P3268-LVE stream 2 separate zones simultaneously from one physical camera?
Yes. Multi-view streaming allows up to 2 individually cropped view areas to be output at full frame rate simultaneously. This is useful when a single camera covers a wide scene but you need separate video feeds for different monitoring purposes - for example, one cropped stream focused on a pedestrian entry and a second focused on a vehicle approach, both delivered as independent streams to a VMS or display layout without any additional hardware. -
Is the IK10 rating confirmed for the outdoor dome housing?
Yes. The P3268-LVE carries confirmed IK10 vandal resistance alongside IP66 weather sealing. IK10 is the highest rating under the IEC 62262 standard, indicating the housing withstands 20 joules of impact energy. Combined with IP66, which certifies protection against powerful water jets from any direction, this housing is appropriate for exposed external mounting on commercial buildings, transport infrastructure, and industrial sites where deliberate interference or harsh weather is a risk.
