Product Overview
Model: AXIS-02326-001
Who This Is For
For security integrators and facility managers who need a discreet indoor dome camera that goes well beyond basic video capture, the AXIS P3265-V is built around deep learning analytics and forensic-grade imaging in a single ceiling-mounted unit. This is a camera specced for environments where footage must hold up under scrutiny - retail floors with mixed lighting, corporate reception areas, educational buildings, and healthcare facilities where staff need to classify motion events accurately rather than just record them. The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens means the field of view can be dialled in remotely after installation, removing the need to reposition the camera for fine adjustments. The IK10 vandal rating adds a layer of physical durability appropriate for publicly accessible spaces. Installers working on projects that require edge-based human and vehicle classification without adding a separate analytics server will find the AXIS P3265-V a strong candidate for the shortlist.
What This Camera Actually Does
Forensic WDR up to 120 dB
In lobbies and retail spaces where large windows create extreme contrast between bright outdoor light and shaded interiors, Forensic WDR maintains usable detail in both zones simultaneously. At up to 120 dB, this is a step above standard WDR implementations that often sacrifice shadow detail or blow out bright areas.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Performance
Lightfinder 2.0 keeps colour video usable in low-light conditions without switching to black and white or relying on IR illumination. For areas that remain partially lit after hours - warehouses, corridors, or carparks - this means colour detail is retained for identification purposes without additional lighting infrastructure.
On-Camera Deep Learning Analytics
Powered by the ARTPEC-8 chip and its dedicated deep learning processing unit, AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the camera - no server required. It classifies humans and vehicles (including vehicle type) in the scene, which means alerts are tied to object class rather than raw pixel change, significantly cutting false alarm rates.
Motorised Varifocal Lens with Remote Focus
The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens allows zoom and focus adjustments from the camera's web interface after mounting. This removes the need to physically reposition or access the camera during commissioning, which matters in ceiling installations where ladder access is time-consuming or disruptive to building operations.
Zipstream Bandwidth and Storage Savings
Axis Zipstream in H.264 and H.265 reduces bitrate dynamically by focusing encoding detail on areas of interest - faces, moving objects - while compressing static background at a higher ratio. For multi-camera deployments, this can meaningfully reduce NVR storage requirements without dropping resolution on the footage that matters.
Edge Vault Cybersecurity
Axis Edge Vault is a hardware-based secure element that stores the camera's cryptographic device ID, making it harder to spoof or substitute on the network. For enterprise installations or government-adjacent facilities with strict network security requirements, this is a meaningful differentiator over cameras that rely solely on software-level credentials.
Who Buys This Model
- Security integrators on enterprise fitouts: Specifying ceiling-mounted cameras across multi-floor corporate or government buildings where edge analytics reduce server load and IK10 durability meets facility management requirements.
- Retail loss prevention teams: Using AXIS Object Analytics to classify human movement in aisles and at exits, generating reliable alerts without the volume of false triggers common with basic motion detection.
- Education facilities managers: Installing cameras in corridors, canteens, and entry foyers where a discreet low-profile dome blends into the ceiling and the motorised lens allows commissioning without disrupting daily operations.
- Healthcare and aged care operators: Requiring cameras in areas with variable lighting - from bright clinical zones to dimly lit corridors - where Forensic WDR and Lightfinder 2.0 maintain image quality across those conditions.
- IT and physical security convergence teams: Deploying cameras on managed networks where Edge Vault device authentication and ACAP v4 application support align with broader network access control and zero-trust policies.
Honest Assessment
The AXIS P3265-V is one of the more capable 2MP indoor dome cameras available through Security Australia, and its strengths are concentrated in two areas: imaging quality under difficult light and on-camera analytics that actually classify objects rather than just detect motion. Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB is not a marketing number - it performs in mixed-light environments where cheaper cameras return blown-out or crushed footage. The ARTPEC-8 DLPU means analytics run locally without any additional licensing server, which simplifies deployment and ongoing cost. The motorised varifocal lens is a genuine installation efficiency gain on ceiling-mounted projects.
Where it will not serve: this is a 2MP fixed indoor dome with no built-in IR illumination, so it is not the right tool for completely dark environments or outdoor applications. If wide-area coverage across a large open space is the priority, a PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera will cover more ground from a single mounting point. The price point reflects its professional-grade components, so budget-constrained projects with straightforward monitoring needs may find simpler 2MP options more appropriate.
Before You Buy
Installer Note: The P3265-V has external audio I/O connections (microphone input and line output) rather than built-in mic and speaker. If two-way audio is a project requirement, budget for a compatible external microphone and speaker and plan your cabling route accordingly before mounting. Also confirm your switch port supplies sufficient PoE budget - check the camera's power consumption spec against your switch's per-port output, particularly if you are also powering I/O peripherals from the same circuit.
ACAP Applications: The ARTPEC-8 chip supports ACAP version 4 applications, which opens up a library of third-party deep learning apps beyond the included AXIS Object Analytics. If your project requires specialised analytics - crowd density, queue management, or specific object classification - confirm your chosen ACAP app is v4 compatible before purchasing, as older ACAP v3 apps will not run on this platform.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are installing in a high-contrast environment such as a foyer, retail floor, or reception area and need Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB to maintain usable footage across bright and shadowed zones in the same frame.
- Good match if: Your project requires edge-based object classification - detecting and categorising humans versus vehicles - without adding analytics server hardware, and you want a camera certified to IK10 for publicly accessible ceiling locations.
- You may need a different model if: The installation is outdoors, in a fully dark environment without ambient lighting, or requires coverage of a wide open area from a single mount point - in those cases, look at outdoor dome cameras with integrated IR illumination, or a PTZ/multi-sensor panoramic model from the range.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: You need a 2MP IK10 indoor dome with on-camera deep learning analytics, Forensic WDR at up to 120 dB, and a motorised varifocal lens that can be adjusted remotely after ceiling installation without revisiting the mount.
- You may need a different model if: Coverage of a large open indoor space - warehouse floor, airport terminal, or open-plan office - from a single mount point is the priority. In those cases, a panoramic multi-sensor or fisheye camera covering 180 or 360 degrees will reduce total camera count and cabling cost more effectively than a single directional dome.
- Pairs well with: A compatible Axis or ONVIF-compliant NVR with AXIS Camera Station integration, allowing AXIS Object Analytics events to be recorded and acted on within the same management platform without third-party middleware.
Common Questions
-
Does this camera work in low-light conditions without IR illumination?
Yes. The AXIS P3265-V uses Lightfinder 2.0 to maintain colour video in very low ambient light without switching to black and white or requiring supplementary IR lighting. This suits environments that retain some ambient illumination after hours - corridors with emergency lighting, retail spaces with display lighting, or parking areas with overhead fluorescents on reduced power. For completely dark environments with zero ambient light, a camera with integrated IR illumination would be more appropriate. -
Will this camera classify people versus vehicles in the scene?
Yes. AXIS Object Analytics runs on the camera's ARTPEC-8 deep learning processing unit and classifies detected objects as humans or vehicles, including vehicle type. Detection rules can be configured for specific zones within the frame - for example, triggering an alert only when a person enters a defined area, rather than when a vehicle passes through it. No additional analytics server is required; processing is handled on the camera itself. -
How does the motorised varifocal lens affect installation time?
It reduces it significantly for ceiling installations. The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens is adjusted via the camera's web interface - zoom and autofocus are set remotely after mounting is complete. Installers do not need to re-access the camera, remove a dome cover, or physically reposition the unit to fine-tune the field of view. This matters on projects with many cameras or where ceiling access requires scaffolding or disruptive ladder work. -
Does this camera support ACAP third-party applications, and what version does it require?
Yes. The AXIS P3265-V supports ACAP version 4, which is the current Axis Camera Application Platform generation tied to the ARTPEC-8 chip. ACAP v4 applications include deep learning-based apps from Axis and third-party developers - crowd density estimation, queue detection, specialised object classifiers, and others. Important note for existing deployments: ACAP v3 applications are not compatible with ACAP v4, so any existing custom applications from older Axis cameras will need updated v4 versions before deploying on this model. Confirm application compatibility with your software vendor before specifying the camera for a project that relies on a specific third-party ACAP app. -
What is Forensic WDR and how does 120 dB compare to standard WDR?
Forensic WDR captures and combines multiple exposures per frame to retain detail in both the brightest and darkest parts of the scene simultaneously, with the P3265-V rated up to 120 dB depending on scene conditions. Standard WDR implementations on entry-level cameras typically operate in the 80-100 dB range and often compress or lose detail in the shadow regions. At 120 dB, the P3265-V handles more extreme contrast ratios - such as a sun-lit window frame in the same shot as a dim interior - while maintaining forensically useful image data throughout the frame rather than exposing for an average. -
Does the digital PTZ reduce the effective resolution of the video stream?
Yes, it does. The AXIS P3265-V offers digital PTZ with preset positions, which works by cropping and enlarging a portion of the full 1920x1080 sensor frame. As you zoom in digitally, the displayed area covers fewer sensor pixels, reducing effective resolution in the zoomed view. The camera also supports up to 2 individually cropped multi-view streams at full frame rate, which allows fixed crop zones to be set - useful for simultaneously monitoring 2 sub-regions of a wide field of view. For projects requiring optical zoom-and-track capability with no resolution loss, a motorised optical PTZ camera is the appropriate product type. The digital PTZ on this camera is best used for post-installation field-of-view adjustments and fixed preset zones rather than active operator-controlled zooming. -
What does Axis Edge Vault actually do on this camera?
Edge Vault is a hardware-based secure enclave built into the ARTPEC-8 chip that stores the camera's cryptographic device identity and keys in tamper-resistant hardware rather than software. In practice, this means each AXIS P3265-V has a verifiable, hardware-anchored device ID that can be authenticated on the network - making it significantly harder for an attacker to substitute a rogue device or spoof the camera's identity on a managed network segment. For IT security teams applying zero-trust or network access control policies to physical security infrastructure, Edge Vault is a meaningful differentiator. Standard cameras without a hardware secure element rely solely on software credentials, which are more vulnerable to credential theft or firmware manipulation. You can confirm device authenticity using Axis Device Manager, available through Security Australia's partner ecosystem alongside the camera.
