Product Overview

Model: AXIS P3265-LV

Who This Is For

Property managers specifying indoor surveillance for commercial buildings, professional offices, or multi-tenancy environments will find the Axis P3265-LV well suited to spaces where image precision and discreet ceiling integration both matter. The 3.4-8.9mm varifocal lens lets installers dial in the exact field of view remotely after mounting, which saves significant time in corridors, reception areas, and open-plan floors where the ideal angle is not always obvious until the camera is in position. Built-in IR handles low-light scenarios in car parks, stairwells, and back-of-house areas without secondary lighting. AXIS Object Analytics adds on-camera classification of people and vehicles, reducing false alerts from environmental triggers. IK10-rated vandal resistance makes this suitable for semi-public areas where the housing is exposed to incidental contact. This is a purpose-built professional indoor dome for IT managers, security integrators, and facilities teams who are specifying a managed Axis ecosystem rather than a consumer-grade system.

What This Camera Actually Does

Varifocal Lens with Remote Adjustment

The 3.4-8.9mm motorised varifocal lens allows zoom and focus to be adjusted through the camera's web interface after the dome is fixed to the ceiling. No ladder revisit, no manual lens ring - particularly useful in high ceilings or already-furnished commercial interiors.

AXIS Object Analytics On-Camera

Processing happens inside the camera, not on a server. The analytics engine classifies detected objects as people or vehicles, triggering alerts only on relevant events. This cuts down alarm fatigue significantly in busy indoor environments where standard motion detection would fire constantly.

Built-In IR Illumination

Integrated IR lets the P3265-LV maintain usable image quality in unlit or dimly lit indoor spaces - after-hours corridors, stairwells, and storage areas - without requiring separate lighting infrastructure. The IR adjusts automatically based on scene conditions.

Wide Dynamic Range

WDR handles scenes with mixed lighting - an entry lobby with bright outdoor light through glass doors and a shaded interior, for example. Both the bright and dark areas of the frame remain legible simultaneously, rather than one being washed out or underexposed.

IK10 Vandal-Resistant Housing

The dome housing is rated IK10, meaning it withstands significant physical impact. For semi-public indoor areas - stairwells, car park entry points, lift lobbies - this adds meaningful protection without requiring a separate armoured enclosure.

H.265 Compression and Edge Storage

H.265 encoding significantly reduces the bandwidth and storage footprint of continuous 1080p recording compared to H.264. A microSD/SDXC card slot supports local edge storage for recording during network outages - relevant for managed sites that require failover continuity.

Who Buys This Model

  • Security Integrators on Commercial Fitouts: Specifying a managed Axis ecosystem across office floors where remote lens adjustment after ceiling fixing saves significant rework time on large-scale deployments.
  • IT and Facilities Managers in Multi-Tenancy Buildings: Needing ONVIF-compatible cameras that integrate with existing VMS platforms and support on-camera analytics without adding server-side processing load.
  • Retail and Hospitality Operators: Covering customer-facing areas where WDR handles mixed natural and artificial light near large windows, and object analytics reduces nuisance alerts from environmental motion like air conditioning vents.
  • Healthcare and Education Facility Managers: Installing in corridors, reception areas, and common spaces where IK10 housing provides durability without a bulky external enclosure, and edge storage ensures recordings survive a network drop.

Honest Assessment

The P3265-LV does several things genuinely well. The remotely adjustable varifocal lens is a real operational advantage on commercial installations where ceiling access becomes inconvenient once a space is occupied. On-camera AXIS Object Analytics means meaningful alert filtering without additional server licensing, and IK10 housing gives durability that most indoor domes at this category do not offer. H.265 keeps storage and bandwidth manageable across multi-camera deployments. Where this camera is not the right tool: it is an indoor-rated dome and is not appropriate for exposed outdoor mounting. It also covers a single fixed angle - if a wide open area needs comprehensive coverage from one mounting point, a fisheye or multi-sensor camera would serve that need better. The P3265-LV is part of the Security Australia range and is suited to integrators and managed commercial accounts rather than entry-level standalone installs where a simpler fixed-lens camera would be adequate.

Before You Buy

Lens Adjustment: While the 3.4-8.9mm varifocal range can be adjusted remotely via the web interface, initial physical installation still requires the camera to be mounted and connected before the view can be confirmed. Plan your cable run to allow the camera to be powered and live during the ceiling commissioning step - attempting to pre-set the lens without a live image in the actual space will almost always result in a second-visit correction.

PoE Requirement: The P3265-LV is powered via IEEE 802.3af PoE. Confirm your switch or NVR ports are 802.3af-capable before ordering. Standard PoE (802.3af) is sufficient - PoE+ is not required - but passive injectors or non-standard power delivery will not power this camera correctly.

Quick Fit Check

  • Good match if: You are specifying a ceiling-mounted indoor dome for a commercial office, corridor, or retail space and need the lens angle confirmed remotely after mounting without revisiting the ceiling.
  • Good match if: Your VMS or NVR platform requires ONVIF compatibility and your site generates nuisance alerts that on-camera object classification - people and vehicle filtering via AXIS Object Analytics - would meaningfully reduce.
  • You may need a different model if: The mounting location is outdoors or in a wet area - this camera is rated IP42 and is intended for dry indoor environments only. A weatherproof turret or bullet camera rated IP66 or IP67 would be the appropriate product type for exposed or semi-exposed outdoor positions.

Real-World Scenarios

High-Ceiling Office Lobby

A commercial lobby with 4-metre ceilings and large glazed frontage. WDR manages the contrast between bright exterior light and the shaded interior, while the remote varifocal lens is tightened on the entry point after installation without scaffolding being re-erected.

After-Hours Corridor Coverage

A corridor where lighting is on motion-sensor timers and frequently unlit after hours. Built-in IR maintains usable image quality when the corridor lights are off, without requiring permanent lighting infrastructure to be installed alongside the camera.

Managed Alert Environment

A security operations team monitoring 40-plus cameras across a campus who have configured AXIS Object Analytics to alert only on confirmed person detection. Air conditioning vents, plant movement, and ambient light shifts no longer generate alarm calls during overnight monitoring shifts.

Lift Lobby and Stairwell

Semi-public transitional spaces in a multi-tenancy building where IK10 housing resists incidental contact from moving equipment or people. The compact ceiling dome profile keeps the unit out of reach and avoids the visual profile of a surface-mounted bullet in a tenant-facing area.

Network Outage Continuity

A site with a managed recording requirement where network interruptions must not result in recording gaps. A microSD card fitted to the P3265-LV allows edge recording to continue locally during outages, with footage synchronised back to the NVR once the connection is restored.

How It Compares

  • Choose this if: You need a professional indoor dome with remotely adjustable varifocal lens, on-camera object analytics, and IK10 housing in a single ceiling-mount unit - primarily for managed commercial or institutional environments running a VMS or Axis ecosystem.
  • You may need a different model if: Your priority is wide-area coverage from a single mounting point - a fisheye or multi-sensor panoramic camera would provide 180-degree or 360-degree coverage that a single-lens dome cannot replicate, and would reduce the number of positions needed on large open floors.
  • Pairs well with: A managed PoE switch with VLAN capability for camera network segmentation, an ONVIF-compatible NVR or enterprise VMS for centralised recording, and a UPS or PoE switch with battery backup to maintain power continuity to the camera during outages.

Common Questions

  1. Can the lens be adjusted after the camera is mounted to the ceiling?

Yes. The 3.4-8.9mm varifocal lens on the P3265-LV supports remote zoom and focus adjustment through the camera's web interface once it is powered and connected. This means the field of view can be confirmed and refined from ground level after the dome is fixed in position - no physical access to the ceiling is required for lens adjustment after initial installation.
  2. Does this camera work with non-Axis NVRs and VMS platforms?

Yes. The P3265-LV supports ONVIF Profile S, G, and T, which means it is compatible with most third-party NVR and VMS platforms that accept ONVIF streams. Full analytics integration, including AXIS Object Analytics event triggers, will typically require an Axis-compatible VMS or AXIS Camera Station for end-to-end functionality - basic video recording works on any ONVIF-compatible system.
  3. Will this camera work in a corridor or room that has no lighting overnight?

Yes. The built-in IR illumination allows the P3265-LV to capture usable images in complete darkness. The automatic IR cut filter switches the sensor to monochrome IR mode when ambient light drops below the threshold, then returns to colour when light is available. No secondary lighting infrastructure is required for after-hours coverage.
  4. What does AXIS Object Analytics actually filter, and does it need a separate server licence?

No separate server licence is required. AXIS Object Analytics runs directly on the camera's built-in processor. It classifies detected motion as either a person or a vehicle, and can trigger alerts or recording rules based on those classifications. Environmental motion - air movement, lighting changes, minor vibration - does not meet the classification threshold, which substantially reduces nuisance alerts compared to standard pixel-based motion detection.
  5. Is this camera rated for outdoor use?

No. The P3265-LV carries an IP42 ingress protection rating, which means it is suitable for indoor dry environments only. It is not rated for outdoor mounting, rain exposure, or wash-down environments. For outdoor positions, a camera rated IP66 or IP67 in a weatherproof turret, dome, or bullet housing would be the appropriate product type available through Security Australia.
  6. Does H.265 compression make a noticeable difference to storage requirements?

Yes. H.265 (HEVC) typically reduces file size by approximately 50% compared to H.264 at equivalent image quality settings. Across a multi-camera deployment running continuous 1080p recording, this difference is meaningful for NVR storage planning - sites that would need 8TB under H.264 may manage the same retention period with 4TB under H.265, assuming the NVR and playback software also support H.265 decoding.
  7. What PoE standard does this camera require?

Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient. The P3265-LV does not require PoE+ (802.3at). A single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to the camera. Verify that each port on your switch or NVR is genuinely 802.3af-compliant - passive PoE injectors or non-standard power delivery may not reliably power this camera.
