Product Overview
Model: P3245-LV
Note: The AXIS P3245-LV has been superseded. The current replacement is the AXIS P3265-LVE, which carries updated analytics and outdoor-rated housing. If you are specifying a new installation, the P3265-LVE is the recommended path forward.
Who This Is For
For security integrators and facilities managers who need a ceiling-mounted dome that can be precisely dialled in after the cable is run, the AXIS P3245-LV is built for that workflow. Its 3.4-8.9mm varifocal lens adjusts remotely - no ladders back up after initial mount - making it practical for corridors, reception areas, open-plan offices, and retail floors where the exact framing requirement is only confirmed once the camera is in position. The IK10-rated housing handles exposed ceiling installations in semi-public spaces such as childcare centres, libraries, and medical waiting rooms where accidental or deliberate contact is a consideration. Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR up to 120 dB mean the camera handles the mixed artificial and natural lighting typical of commercial interiors without manual scene-by-scene adjustment. Zipstream on H.264 and H.265 reduces storage and bandwidth load without changing the recording workflow.
What This Camera Actually Does
Remote Zoom and Focus
The varifocal lens adjusts from 3.4mm to 8.9mm with remote zoom and focus through the camera interface. Once mounted, the installer frames and sharpens the shot from a laptop without physically handling the camera again. This is the feature that saves the second ladder trip on most installs.
Forensic WDR up to 120 dB
Wide dynamic range processing handles scenes where bright windows sit behind a dark interior. At up to 120 dB, the camera retains detail in both the bright and shadowed areas of the same frame - relevant for reception desks, entrance lobbies, and rooms with skylights.
Lightfinder 2.0 Low-Light Performance
Colour video down to 0.1 lux and black-and-white to 0.02 lux before the IR kicks in. In dimly lit corridors or car parks where only minimal emergency lighting is present, this keeps colour in the image rather than switching prematurely to monochrome.
OptimizedIR Night Vision
Built-in IR illumination takes over at 0 lux. OptimizedIR adjusts the IR intensity and distribution to match the current zoom setting, avoiding the overexposed hot-spot common with fixed IR emitters. Useful for longer indoor corridors where the field of view narrows at higher zoom.
Zipstream Bandwidth Reduction
Zipstream analyses each frame and reduces bitrate on static or low-complexity areas without affecting forensic detail in regions of interest. On H.264 and H.265, this translates directly into reduced NVR storage consumption and lower network load across multi-camera deployments.
IK10 Vandal-Resistant Housing
IK10 is the highest impact-protection rating on the IEC 62262 scale, rated to resist 20 joules of impact. This matters for low ceiling installations in schools, transit waiting areas, and retail stockrooms where the camera is within reach and physical interference is a realistic risk.
Who Buys This Model
- Security Integrators on Commercial Fit-Outs: Specifiers running multi-camera office or retail installations where remote zoom and focus reduces commissioning time per camera head.
- Facilities Managers in Education and Childcare: Operators specifying ceiling cameras in accessible spaces who need IK10 impact resistance as a procurement requirement.
- IT and Building Services Teams in Corporate Environments: Teams running PoE infrastructure who need a camera that drops onto an existing Cat5e or Cat6 network without a separate power run.
- Installers Working on Lobby and Reception Areas: Contractors dealing with mixed lighting - bright windows behind dark counters - where Forensic WDR up to 120 dB is the deciding specification.
Honest Assessment
The P3245-LV does a specific job well: high-quality 1080p ceiling surveillance in indoor commercial environments where lighting is unpredictable and physical camera access after installation is inconvenient. The remote varifocal lens, Forensic WDR, and Lightfinder 2.0 combination is a capable package for lobbies, corridors, open-plan offices, and retail floors. IK10 housing adds practical value in any installation where the camera sits at or near head height. Zipstream is a genuine storage saving across larger deployments, not marketing language.
What it will not do: two-way audio is not available from the built-in hardware alone - it requires the optional AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface accessory. This is not an outdoor camera; while IP66-rated, the housing and IR range are sized for indoor use. If the application involves long outdoor approaches, wide-area coverage across a car park, or active PTZ tracking, a motorised PTZ or multi-sensor model available through Security Australia will serve the brief better. The P3245-LV has also been superseded - the P3265-LVE is the current production model.
Before You Buy
Varifocal Setup: The remote zoom and focus function operates through the camera's web interface during initial setup. Confirm your commissioning workflow includes network access to the camera IP before the installer leaves the site - framing and focus are set electronically, not mechanically, and require a connected device to complete. The P-Iris lens control also needs to be confirmed active in image settings to achieve the full aperture and depth-of-field benefit at each zoom position.
Audio Wiring: If two-way audio is part of the brief, budget and plan for the AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface accessory with portcast technology. The P3245-LV has audio line input and output connectors, but there is no built-in microphone or speaker - the audio capability is not functional without the external interface unit, which requires its own cabling and mounting position.
Quick Fit Check
- Good match if: You are mounting to a ceiling in a commercial interior - office, retail, medical, or education - and need a varifocal lens that can be adjusted remotely after the camera is fixed in place, without returning to the mount.
- Good match if: The installation involves high-contrast lighting such as a lobby with exterior windows or a retail floor with mixed natural and artificial light, and Forensic WDR up to 120 dB is a specified requirement.
- You may need a different model if: The application involves active wide-area tracking, long outdoor approaches, or coverage of a large open space from a single camera position - a motorised PTZ or multi-sensor panoramic camera will cover those scenarios with fewer camera heads and more operational flexibility.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
Real-World Scenarios
How It Compares
- Choose this if: The installation is indoors with mixed or high-contrast lighting, ceiling mounting is required, IK10 impact resistance is specified, and remote varifocal setup will reduce commissioning time across multiple camera positions.
- You may need a different model if: The application requires AI-based object classification, active wide-area tracking, or outdoor long-range IR coverage - a motorised PTZ or an outdoor fixed camera with onboard analytics will address those use cases more directly.
- Pairs well with: An H.265-capable NVR with Zipstream support to maximise the storage savings the camera is already delivering, and a PoE switch sized to the channel count of the deployment.
Common Questions
-
Does the P3245-LV work on a standard PoE switch, or does it need PoE+?
Standard IEEE 802.3af PoE is sufficient. The P3245-LV draws power within the 802.3af budget, so it will run on any PoE switch or PoE injector rated to that standard. PoE+ (802.3at) is not required, which simplifies infrastructure planning in multi-camera deployments where switch port budget matters. -
How does the remote zoom and focus actually work - is it automated or manual?
It is remotely operated but manually controlled by the installer. After mounting, the installer accesses the camera via its web interface or AXIS IP Utility on a laptop connected to the same network, then uses on-screen controls to adjust zoom position across the 3.4-8.9mm range and confirm electronic focus. It is not motorised auto-focus triggered by scene content - it is operator-controlled adjustment that eliminates the need to physically manipulate the lens housing once the camera is fixed to the ceiling. -
Does this camera have built-in two-way audio?
No. The P3245-LV has audio line input and line output connectors, but there is no built-in microphone or speaker. Two-way audio functionality requires the optional AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interface accessory with portcast technology, which connects separately and requires its own cabling and mounting provision. If two-way audio is a firm requirement for the installation, confirm the T61 accessory is included in the project scope before finalising the camera specification. -
Will this camera record at 1080p 25fps with WDR active?
Yes. With Forensic WDR enabled, the P3245-LV records at 25fps at 50Hz power line frequency, or 30fps at 60Hz. WDR processing does impose a frame rate ceiling - the 50/60fps modes are only available when WDR is disabled. For most commercial surveillance applications in Australia (50Hz mains), 25fps with WDR active is the standard operating mode. -
What is the difference between the digital PTZ on this camera and a motorised PTZ camera?
Significant. The P3245-LV's PTZ is digital only - it crops and enlarges within the 1080p sensor, which reduces effective resolution as you zoom in digitally. There is no physical movement of the lens or housing. It supports preset positions and up to 2 individually cropped view areas at full frame rate, which is useful for creating sub-streams focused on specific areas within the captured frame. A motorised PTZ camera physically moves and uses optical zoom, maintaining full resolution across the zoom range and enabling active tracking across a scene. For any application requiring live operator-directed tracking or wide-area coverage from a single head, a motorised PTZ is the appropriate product category. The range is available through Security Australia if the brief calls for physical pan, tilt, and optical zoom. -
Does Zipstream actually reduce storage, and does it affect video quality for evidence purposes?
Yes, it reduces storage, and no, it does not degrade forensically relevant detail. Zipstream works by dynamically lowering the bitrate on static or uniform areas of the frame - empty background, static walls - while preserving full bitrate on regions of motion or complexity. The camera processes this in real time on H.264 and H.265 streams. The result is smaller file sizes on the NVR without stripping detail from the areas most relevant to incident review. The reduction is scene-dependent: a busy retail floor will see less saving than a quiet corridor, but in most commercial indoor environments the storage impact is meaningful across a multi-camera deployment. -
Can the P3245-LV be used outdoors given the IP66 rating?
Technically the IP66 rating means it is sealed against dust and high-pressure water jets, but this is not a camera designed or sized for outdoor deployment. The IR illumination range and lens selection are configured for indoor distances, and the housing lacks the sun shield and thermal management typically found on dedicated outdoor cameras. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 50°C is broad, but for an outdoor install with direct sun exposure, rain, and longer distances to cover, a weatherproof outdoor bullet or turret camera would be the more appropriate specification.
